really? i saw this exact same comment on the part 1 video but there are two cars here - part 1 used a Disco 3 with the registration BX04 CKP and this one is BX04 CKN. seems like the land rover reliability myth has well and truly been busted.
This is one of my favourite Top Gear challenges ever, as much as I love the bigger scale new stuff, there's something beautiful about this one. Just Clarkson driving up a mountain in a Land Rover, and it has such an impact. What really made it for me was using Jupiter on the soundtrack. Love this challenge so much.
Fun fact: Jeremy had to go home after the shoot, and accidentally left the keys in his pocket. The crew couldn't drive it back down the mountain that evening, so it stayed up there for the evening.
Norway would be absolutely fantastic! beautiful people, land, waters, culture... The list of cool things about Norway is endless. Top Gear should definitely revisit a hill climb challenge by doing it properly -and in Norway. I'd love that. great idea! cheers!
Realizing that, it still has the air-ride suspension that I've seen give LR3/4's problems time after time. IMO swapng to actual steel springs helps in a "real" overland vehicle. Honestly my Diesel 4Runner would walk through this track like nothing, but it is, as usual, vry cool to see Jezza take this truck up to the top. Just wish he'd try out some better 4wd's instead of giving lip service to LR who have done nothing but lessen the OR capability of their trucks over the years IMO.
Lol I’ve seen a Land Rover go up hell’s gate which was straight up rocky canyons. Many people have died in other vehicles attempting and land rovers go up with ease(it does take an experienced driver) I’ve seen these vehicles go through mud like it’s nothing(you may have to put it in reverse and forward and repeat the process a few times) but I’ve seen these vehicles do the extraordinary. They completely surpass any Jeep(supped up or not, but ironically, the cherokee can go more than a wrangler) or Toyota, etc....
Is this the time Jeremy got to the top of the mountain, and asked the camera crew to drive the car back down. But then got in a helicopter to go home, with the key, leaving them stuck???
Electronically controlled transfer cases are brilliant, until the car is 5 years old. Then you'll be driving down the road and it will, for no reason at all, suddenly engage low range and rock-crawl mode. You'll have to have the thing towed to a land rover garage and pay them a lot of money to have them tell you that you spilled coffee on the console 4 years ago and you now need an entirely new electric gearbox controller. Sometimes a Lever to move a piece of steel is better.
Some of these challenges make me wonder if manufacturers pay TG to showcase their cars.. If thats the case then its a brilliant product placement, the video plays like a Land Rover commercial
worked for years as a landrover tech. the LR3 is the best vehicle they have ever made, true story. that said, nothing in this video that couldnt be done in an 88 mazda 323gtx with lots of throttle and total disregard for underbody damage
jeeps have an outstanding 4x4 dystem, if notthe best (im talking about the wragler of course, though the cherokee has a pretyy good one as well, jus that its heavier.)
Yes I know in the 99.9% of cases the need of "freedom" is only an excuse. But at least it's a consistent one. With an SUV you haven't got an excuse. What I'm trying to say is that an off-road like this doesn't disappoint even if the occasion to use it happens once in all its life. For example you are driving along with your 5yr old boy and drive past a mud field. And decide to drive through it, just to make the kid happy. Try that with an X6 and you'll hate it. Freedom in a very peculiar way
@biglarfspeed6 is from gladiator soundtrack, i think is barbarian horde but i dont remember the name pretty well, anyway i can say 100% sure id from gladiator ost
rocketballa4life...You are correct, the pickup is made for carrying toys like skidoo's or quad's, over more challenging terrain than what Clarkson was going over.
i think the challenge where he went from the amazon to the chilean coast line was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay tougher and cooler. he got up to 16000 ft above sea level
contrary to popular belief, Hummers aren't quite as good as they are made out to be. Don't get me wrong, the Hummer is one of the absolute best brands that you can buy for offroading, but there is competition. Jeep has a major role in the offroad bussiness. Jeep wranglers, because of thier center of gravity, lower than the Hummer's, and shorter wheel base, are a formidible opponent for the Hummer.
they upload one part in two days as if its being shot live! heck its atleast a couple of years old footage, so why not just upload all of it together and save the audience this pain when you know you gotta wait until the next part!
@Tarhini afraid most factory 4wd's would fail on the peat bogs. Perhapes only the little SJ with wide tires. Otherwise you'd need some serious sized boggers to stand a chance, but that would just tear up the landscape. Winching was the best option.
@MrTaneli123 I own a Discovery II and I don't see how your comment would make any sense at all, we Landy owners have pride on owning one of the best off road vehicles ever created and won't be jealous of the own blood brothers of our loved vehicles. Time changes and of course the Disco 4 has better things that the Disco 2, but in no way does it mean a Disco 2 is worthless since it's probably one of the best Landy ever built.
Rightio well I have driven multiple vehicles from both series, the landcruiser IS top heavy causing it to lean in turns and allows it to roll easily, The Landrover tops in at 1.7-9 tonne, it is heavier than the cruiser yet it does perform better on sand due to the weight being 50F50R where as the cruiser is 70F30R causing it do dig in to much and reducing grip at the rear, and sorry to burst your bubble but 4x4s are getting worse, these control systems are preventing a lot of the old tricks.
Also The landrovers sit easily at 2.2m untounched where as the cruisers sit at 1.9 untouched, so the Landrovers are heavier and physically bigger, yet better balanced.
I like the Disco a lot. The new one just restyled is even better. These vehicles are much more useful than those pointless SUVs. You want a family car to get EVERYWHERE, full stop. And that cannot be done by a normal SW, even if it's got 4WD. An SUV is a less efficient, bigger and more expensive 4WD Station Wagon that can go 10 inches further in the mud before getting stuck. No actual reason to own one. Oh no sorry there's one. Hedonism
@extraction706 Its right here on youtube. Search for Gustav Holst - The Planets - Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity The part you refer to is around 1.40, but crank up the volume and listen to all 7 1/2 minutes; you'll love it.
They're a bit better on gas than that; British cars can suck fuel down at a prodigious rate as well. But the fact is, any car would probably be stuck there. He's stuck in a peat bog. They're worse than mud. And it doesn't matter where a car is made; stuck is stuck. Though I'm sure it probably would have benefitted from fatter tires and a more experienced hill climber.
@TimArmst Real reason is because it's privately owned, and the owners haven't allowed people to drive up there before. I agree with you that you probably could - most cars could get up there.
For those of you wondering, that exact Land Rover being filmed is still going strong and according to MOT data its doing about 12k miles a year!
Did you find its registration from the clip on the mot webpage and they have its data?
It did fail its MOT this year (2020) but was fixed and past the next day ! - Still going strong at 163910 miles

@@mylifeasmanta i think they had the one they modified abit and an original one at the same time
@Jeronimo Stupenengo Pefaur You obviously know nothing about land rovers
"Toughest test I have ever dreamed up"
Assuming this was filmed before the Toyota pickup's attempted murder.
Nope, the Unkillable Hilux was during Series 3, while this was Series 5
Or when they drove halfway across Africa in some £1500 cars

is that the song at the 2:20 mark
+evan floricic It's the one at 3:02
there are actually words to Jupiter's slow middle part its a patriotic British hymn called" I vow to thee my country"
Sasha Carrillo totally agree
Sasha Carrillo best comment I’ve seen so far in 2019 👍🏻
The music that plays during this is phenomenal

yes, but no class

He used a land anchor on this one, I recall.
"Thousand and seven foot!" thats like 300m in non peasent units, or a minor hill - lol
altimking wow, you must be very intelligent
Especially intelligent, considering you can’t spell peasant correctly or use punctuation correctly.
altimking I'm not sure the altitude was the point. The type of terrain Clarkson crossed was more important.
@@simonthomas5367 Quite agree, I live up 300m and can easily get to my house in a 1.2 petrol 2002 Fiat Doblo..... I think having the roads help.

What's it like now?
Brilliant video! I just so love the Land Rover Discovery! It stand true to its name, discovering new and unseen places :)
So true!
that mountain its better than my city streets.. no joke!
What city lol
3:11 I see you TG, using Jupiter in your music. I love it!
First TG episode I watched and I still remember every moment
the recurring piano riff in this video is "running up that hill" from kate bush. best song title for a hill climb gotta love Top Gear
