My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

I work at my library, and few months ago, someone borrowed your book from a different district. I recognized it and read it after they returned it. I liked it so much, I had our district buy it. And it is now in my January book display, the theme is 4 & 5 star books of 2023. 100 Days of Sunlight is one of my 5 star books. Mainly because Wes is such an engaging character. Based on this book, you definitely have the chops to give us writing lessons. I love your channel, I love your book, and I think you’re pretty awesome. Happy New Year.

    I have 3 goals of 2024.
    1. The Mage.
This is my very first story idea and project of my life, and I just never finished it.
So I will be working on writing this in 2024.
    2. Fable of the Hunter.
This is my most recent story idea, and among my favorites.
I was planning on making this an animation, but I don’t know how to do that.
    3. Shadow Bound.
This is my passion project. My all time favorite story idea that I’ve ever had, and I’m obsessed with every aspect of this world.
For this, I’m going to wait until I make a name for myself, and hope that a professional animator picks me up to animate Shadow Bound.
And those are my goals of 2024.

      1. The Mage is about a young farm slave named Yuen Vigil who was bought by the Prince of the Kingdom by order of his father, the King.
The Prince’s job was to find young, magically gifted children to be trained to use their magic to fight.
      2. “Fable of the Hunter” is a story about a teenage boy named Hunter Storr who, while on a school camping trip, was attacked by a mythical creature called a Pterolycus.
This Pterolycus was only one of a vast and diverse species of mythical creatures known as Fae (or Fables).
On the verge of death however, Hunter was saved by the Pterolycus blood that accidentally got in his wounds during the fight.
And the rest of the story is about Hunter hunting the Fae in order to save humanity.
      3. Shadow Bound has dual protagonists. A human woman named Alice, and a member of an ancient fallen race called the Kali named Stèrvin (Steve).
When Alice’s home is afflicted with a mysterious illness, it her job to search for a cure.
This leads her to run into Steve where she was supposed to find it, but Steve tells her that the cure was destroyed long ago.
The only way to cure it now would be to destroy it at its source, (The antagonist) the Primordial Shadow.

@@Iso20227 All of these stories sound SO COOOOL, i would love to read them one day, I only have 1 goal for 2024 I don't have a title for it yet but for now I'm calling it Kunagia. There are 5 protagonists, and it's the story of how on of the MC's (Dahlia) discoveres that she has powers and is a Kunagia (that's what the magic users are called), and she and the other MC's have to deal with a dangerous gang/maffia that has a deep hatred for Kunagias and want them extinct. Really exited for it since it's also a cowrite that I'm writting with a friend :)

After dinner, I do the dishes.
After the dishes, I only have so much time left in the day, so I use it to enjoy myself (games mostly).

This is a huge goal, but don't be discouraged if you don't meet it! I first dreamt up my current work's story early last year, been writing for so long, but I'm only on the third draft, no where near publishing considering the way I work means that the second/third draft is more like a first draft (I shelved the second draft because I felt that I changed too much). 15k words with around 50-60k left, by April? I could never, but I don't know about you, hopefully you could do it!
      (PS: what's the title?)

Oh damn, I didn't realize I had any replies! 😆
The project I'm working on (Book 1 of 4, I'm planning) Is Dark Urban Fantasy...if I had to classify it. It's inspired by some local lore, my crazy youth and friends, set in the 90's. Don't want to spoil too much. 😏
Hoping to have a manuscript done by April? I'm about 10-15k words in now and HOPING to keep it to around 100k words...but, I'm thinking I might exceed that if I go by my outline thus far.
I think I'm definitely going the indie publishing route, but I'd like to have a book in hand by the end of this year. I have 2 other projects I'd like to do, and I figure I got 20-30 years left, so, the clock is ticking. Don't want to be a Frank Herbert and expire before I complete things.
      Anyway, I'm babbling.... 🤪

I'm a beginner writer, I wrote a bunch during high school and still write short stories and poems, but I want my own novel and series. I find it very difficult to journal and plan. Its difficult to find free recourses, motivation and help. Your channel is amazing but I still struggle with motivation and patience. I have a solid idea, I explore the characters and the why and try planning but I soon loose interest. I feel like my ideas could be more/ the story isn't up to my standards. They say no matter what your first story is going to be bad but I don't want that being the start of my legacy. Even when I try and go without planning my stories fizzle out quicker. Its like I am stuck in a creative limbo and I cant see my ideas making it.
Your account and the comments and communities have helped me alot but I don't know how to have full confidence in a story and finish it. Its been my goal since i was a little girl and I feel like I am wasting precious time. How do I keep going? that's the biggest question as a writer I cant answer.
I'm so sorry for being so personal but I have the creativity, the ideas and even paper. But I cant find the purpose~ I'm trying my best x

This is definitely a video I needed and felt. I've been figuring out how to build this fantasy series I'm working on, which I ultimately want to be an animated series, but also has written components and anthologies I want to publish. It's been a daunting task between writing, world building and artistic development, but making a plan that has clear, plausible end points has been very motivating. It's really allowed me to see that it is possible, and think of specific, measurable steps to make it happen. I recently wrote a 5 paragraph overview of a character's backstory and it took him from a typical archetype to an absolutely incredible person. I can't wait to do all the writing and development for the other parts of my world and story so it can come alive like that

@@abxiongg Thanks so much! I'm glad to hear you're interested in it since I've been working on it for years and it's only now starting to shape up. I can't wait to share it fully. In the meantime, since you were interested, here's the background for the character I mentioned; it may be a little out of context but I hope you enjoy:
      Markel Fiest
Traits- Sharp, even-tempered, observant, persistent, skillful, knowledgeable, sympathetic
Interests- Academics, athletics, mindfulness, oration, games like chess and other strategy games
Markel grew up in a time of relative peace, but also in one of tension. There were some regional disputes over territory, and some trouble with speciesism. Ever since the Azdajan rebellion, debates over magic and political freedom have been stirred up. The village he lived in was in a border region between near the nation ofSafra; his family grew up with little, but relatively secure- until political and economic factors cut his community off from commerce and other essential resources. Markel did not feel as prejudiced against the neighboring peoples since he had a friend from there; the two would sneak across the border to see each other until they were caught. Markel grew up with much appreciation of the Solasheir after they settled a brewing conflicted between his people and the neighboring nation- one that not only was causing his village to suffer, but threatening to cause bloodshed. After the Solasheir started efforts to decrease prejudice between the species, Markel became good friends with people from both sides. He faced backlash for his connections to "enemy" species. Since these events, his inclination throughout life has been toward unity and protection of the weak, marginalized, and alien. Markel was soon shunned by a large part of his community, and his family, while sympathetic to him, felt it was best for him to leave. Given that he had no real academic opportunities in his village, nor any commercial or political ties, he worked toward military service. He joined the Soleishan allied army as soon as he was of age (18).
He trained in a wealthier part of his home region where he excelled in blade fighting and field tactics. He used his free time to study in libraries and became an excellent and persuasive speaker. Throughout his training and first deployment, he sent much of his money home and sent his younger relatives handmade transcriptions of books and other self made lessons to teach them new skills. Markel was deployed a few times to settle some regional disputes and track down militants and smugglers trying to transfer forbidden magical items. He saw was not only a great fighter, but capable of restraint and negotiation. He cared about both his troops and to a degree his adversaries. His excellence found him climbing the ranks quickly and falling into favor with his commanders. He took up a more administrative role for some time (at 25), and was able to pursue higher education. King Zoran during a political mission He continued to use his education to teach his relatives until he was redeployed to stop the migrations brought on by Lord Azyphaun's political statements. (Markel's first experience with the the throne came between his education and his redeployment while protecting King Zoran, who was making a visit to the region. Markel's local knowledge, expertise, and vast skillset impressed Zoran, and, unbeknownst to Markel at the time, gave Zoran a new approach to the political crisis. The palace intermittently made contact with him over political issues, and sought his insight on topics of magical theology and doctrines)
On his deployment, his path crossed with Klaya Aschlank. The two had different command styles and beliefs, which caused friction between them for some time. It wasn't until the two got to know each other that they started to respect each other more. Even after gaining the edge on Markel for a promotion, Klaya took some of his views to heart and continued to collaborate with him. Markel became a strategist and negotiator for Klaya as tensions increased between Soleisha and Azyphaun. Markel's work in his and Klaya's home region helped keep civil war from breaking out. While on these missions he was able to briefly reconnect with some family and friends. In fact, he was able to see how his actions and character had inspired them to change and unify their communities- which in turn helped settle political problems in the area. After Lord Azyphaun's movement gained speed, King Zoran proposed a diplomatic mission. The Solashein council set up a joint force to go with Zoran to negotiate and, if necessary, arrest the dissenters.
Klaya and Markel were among the first to volunteer. Markel advised Zoran during the mission. After the catastrophe at Terralach, Markel and Klaya returned home, and split paths for some time. Markel worked his way up the ranks further, which brought him to Soleisha. Markel felt it was his duty to help fix the political mess of the time, and to protect the Soleishan throne. After he made it into the royal guard, he became a trusted friend of the executives there. Once his record and reputation came to light, he was made an advisor to the Queen where he helped prepare the nation for the conflict that was coming. He dedicated himself to raising and training Azen like his son. When Markel's parents were soon to pass, he returned to care for them. After their passing, he returned to Soleira and found Klaya leading the guard. He was given his advising position back since he was much more suited for it. Klaya pushed for Markel's parents to be honored with royal recognition as a show of respect for Markel and his family. He and Klaya took joint command of Soleisha's royal forces soon after. At the onset of the Scorschasil war, Markel and Klaya helped with logistics as other even higher ranking officials from the Solashein council oversaw the troops. He established supply lines and kept track of communications, while Klaya managed air and ocean fleets to support supply, reinforcement, and communication transportation. Markel also focused on training and mentoring Azen to prepare him for his political and military obligations.
Markel and Klaya remained close companions and contemporaries leading up to and during the war. Markel harbored secret feelings for Klaya for many years, but never made them known; he feared angering her and damaging his reputation. He also felt that it would be immoral to be with Klaya as they were different species, and she had children already (though her species does not form lifelong, personal bonds around mating). He kept his relationship with her completely friendly and professional, and never let his feelings get in the way of their work. He was always a trusted ally somewhat of a muse for Klaya. The way he looked at it, his life and career alongside her was much more than he could have even hoped for in life. It was not until years into the Schorschasil war, after Klaya's passing, that he admitted any feelings.

I left a comment the other day about wanting to know the steps to take toward publishing; I feel SO heard, Abbie! Thank you for this video. I'm sending my draft to a beta reader (or two?) after this round of revisions and line edits. YAY! Then what? I know you have a video somewhere about the steps toward publishing; which one is it, so I can schedule them into my year? Thank you.
My writing goals for 2024 are: finish and publish The Curse; work on my Devon's Reach series; and continue learning about writing: editing, character development within the story, how to writing different types of characters. I'm starting the year with learning about tricksters, having been inspired by short videos about Loki. By this time next year I want to be retired and living in Italy. During this video, I suddenly realized I don't have to "make it big" before doing so. 🙂

Thank you, Abbie! For roughly all of twenty-twenty-three, I put off writing my first novel (and that doesn't include my three other projects)- but this year I'm forcing myself to work through that dreaded first draft. My story, titled 'A Mind of Thousands', is essentially, in whole, a reflection of my heart placed into a combination of words. Of all my stories, that is the one I want attached to my name, alongside another titled, 'Kilgour'. Your videos are purely addictive and extremely helpful! Happy New Year

Hey, my name is Kharishma and I started writing in 2020 (4th grade) and I love spending time doing what I love. In 2023, I wanted to spare some time to write but I couldn't because of school work, classes, chores, etc. The only 2 good things I did for my writing career is starting a youtube channel (Writing Corner Quest) and my "blog" (which is linked in my channel). I started a new book this year (the idea just popped into my head) and this video will help me so much in finishing and publishing it! So, thank you so much Abbie!

I tend to blame my lack of productivity on my depression. If I can't for whatever reason write for a whole hour, I make sure I don't go to bed if I haven't written at least 15 minutes that day. The other 45 minutes will be written during the days until I have payed by debt off. For fun you should make sure to keep an original copy of that manuscript “pre Abbie” and compare it to your revised draft “after Abbie”.
I bet you’ll see a difference and it could be a learning resource to be able to toggle back and forth - especially if you are really trying to internalize concepts and scene craft etc.
I pantsed a whole bunch of random scenes in the years before I started learning craft. Going back over them now that I know more is a mixed bag on execution - but it’s always entertaining and gratifying too, to look at what I would do differently now.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!🎉🎉🎉
I put aside a LOT of WIPs last year and I want to start clear, so I'm taking the opportunity. I want to write my first book ever, which might not get published, or I'll revisit the manuscript. I have deleted Scrivener (cuz I don't wanna pay and the free version is a month), so when I redownload it, I'll get my 1 month back (hopefully xd). Last year was...crazy. In April I realized the importance of internal conflict (thanks Abbie) and decided to start new. Then, I rushed myself to get ideas, so I made notes on your videos and (mostly) live trainings over the summer. By the time Preptober came, the ideas weren't so attractive anymore. And even though the writing community is supportive as heck, I didn't do it in November either, and I'm glad. November was a HARD month, something always came up and I cried every week, almost every day. I was like, okay - since the more pain you go through, the stronger you'll get - I was like is a plot twist coming?? What do I have to be so mentally and emotionally ready for?? Is life testing my character? xd
In December, I finally got a new idea. (btw my friend just got mad at me for some reason, which reason doesn't make sense xd) I didn't write it down and here we are. I said, it was a tough and crazy year, but 2024 is about to be even crazier!!!
If I ever publish my first book, HALF of the THANK YOU is going to...🥁🥁🥁....YOU, ABBIE! I already said that, but the amount of help I got from this channel is inexpressible. If I didn't start watching your channel in April, I would be NOWHERE. (crazy that I started watching you in April tho). The other half is going to...MYSELF, for not giving up. I'm normally a perfectionist, who cries over the smallest mistake and not knowing something for the first time (toxic, I know). But for the first time, I realized I wasn't crying over mistakes and learned from them. Like, this journey was a whole character arc for me xd. Again, THANK YOU ABBIE!!! Rock on!!🤘💛💛💛💛💛
Ps.: I've recently been into thrillers, but I'm not seeing the characters' internal conflict. It's the same problem I have with series...do the characters need a new internal conflict each book (if you need a new book every time)? In the thriller, and this might sound dumb, but if the secret agent is a constsnt character who will appear in more books, does she need new internal conflicts every time? Like, what should even be my premise? I'd be so glad if you made a video on that here on UA-cam, answering the questions! 💛💛💛

For this year, I want to complete the final draft of my fantasy wolf book “The Way of Wolves”, which I had been writing on since July last year. It has come a long way, but now I want to finish this book and my goal is to let it end at 90k words (with at least 42 chapters, a prologue and epilogue). It has definitely been a long journey with my first original fantasy story, and I’ve been enjoying every second of it. The only main goal is to publish it - which most likely will happen next year. But whether it’s trad- or self-publishing, I do not know. That is for me to decide what it is going to be. As for the word count, I’m currently 42k words (almost midway) with the novel. I hope you guys have a good 2024 on your way with your writing goals!

It's 2:20am here in London. My fantasy/sci-fi series is in its first draft of the first book, but I am currently nearing 60,000 words!! I am hoping to be finished with the first draft by end of February because the next goal is to get in touch with agents. Sure I'll do editing, etc, there are parts of the draft I have already forgotten, some small details that I can no longer remember as much, so I'll have go over it all over again once I am done. But I truly hope to finish this and pray the right person will notice and believe in my story, as I believe in it. After that, whatever happens, happens. Until then I just keep moving forward (chanenning my inner Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan!) xx

Oh, this is really difficult. I don't really have a good concrete idea for writing goals... I mean, I know I want to finally get serious about writing and becoming an author in 2024, and I know I wanna start writing a little something... But that's just vague wants, not actual goals to work towards. It's daunting, because I've never really written before besides a few chapters of a fanfic (which I actually think is still good for a beginner looking back), but serious writing is really daunting. I would like to go to a writing course or workshop one day, but I can't when I have nothing to show for. It's so daunting...

I’m not sure if this helps…but I felt so much pressure around the idea of getting published that I had such a tough time even writing that much because I felt so stressed. At the end of 2022, I told myself that I would put that aside for the year and just work on showing up each day and writing because I wanted to write (and some of that was fanfic!!) and I ended up learning so much about myself as a writer and getting inspired for new projects. Anyway, this year I feel like I have a clearer sense of direction and goals. Idk if that’s encouraging at all, but I’m cheering you on!! Happy writing ⭐️

I've been mulling around with a subplot for a POV of mine since November. I know the rough outline of the story and of this particular plotline but the details are fuzzy. A lot of it includes giving one character breadcrumbs of information so that they can figure out what the antagonists's intentions are while other characters reach wrong conclusions. None of these characters are dumb so I can't simply make them arrive to the wrong conclusion. The only way to do this is to give my main character a bit of information that others don't have. But it can't be something dead obvious, it has to be vague.
This week, I finally figured out how to do it.

    Goals -
    1. Write and self-publish the Rise of the Shadow Walker - really dark stuff for the Tales from Trinity City universe - and I already have two scenes written.
    2. Write and test 6 Daring Tales for the Welcome to Trinity City campaign.
    3. Write the Webtastic Stories: The President of the Internet blog series - already have the introduction blogs written.
    4. Write and self-publish the Fighting Factions TfTC sourcebook.
Talking about lifestyle right now -
Well, there will be some limiting things.
First, my pup, Calvin Klein just died on Jan. 7th - it breaks my heart.
Two, we will be getting a new pup soon - around March 10th, named Peter Parker.
It’s going to be an interesting year.
Maybe I drop the Rise of the Shadow Walker this year and focus on the Webtastic Stories series and the Daring Tales and Fighting Factions book. It depends on how far along I can get the Webtastic Stories writing and art done before March…

English is not my native language but I really want to write in English. I’ve heard I shouldn’t write my novel in English if I didn’t live in an English speaking country for a few years or studied English literature in a university (I want to study it but I’m really not there yet). But if I work on it for years, read A LOT of English novels, maybe travel a lot, I already watch every movie/series in English and write a lot of English short stories and poems, couldn’t I write in English? I’ve got some friends from English speaking countries, some of them are even English teachers, so they can look over it, too. I’m about to read my first Virginia Woolf book in English, I believe only that can already have so much impact on my English-writing skills and I’m so excited. Also actually half of my friends are native English speakers, we’re all part of an English theatre group, so that helps, too. This comment is actually me telling myself why I can write that novel in English.

My problem I have with writing is that I fear to upset people with what I write. Or else that I feel like I do not portray the Situation/life problema of my character correctly. Even if I did a lot of Research.
Its about a german WW1 soilder that comes home with ptsd from the war and meets a woman. Falling in love. Becoming a Family. But war and the past left scars to both of them.
I always imagine that people will criticise my book and say, that its not correctly well written. Or even people who had ptsd say its not well written.
But I knowy that i did good reserach ober years to this theme.
And this problem keeps me from publishing my finished Book. I

    Summary for the future me
1 find your why. Why does this writing goals matter to you?, what’s the most important thing/ project? (Find the reason why it matters)
    - when I imagine my dream author life what does it look like?
    - what first action steps can I take now to make this dream a reality?
    - what writing projects am I the most excited about this year and why?
2 begin with the end in mind.
-by this time next year I want to…
    - starting at the end what steps comes before that?
    - how does each action step connect to the final goal?
    3 be realistic
    - how much time can I devote each month/week/ day to furthering my writing goals?
    - if I could only accomplish one priority goal this year, which one would i choose?
    - if I had a best friend who had the exact same lifestyle and responsibilities as I do what advice would I give them?
4 give yourself more time than you think you need
5 establish a system that suits your current lifestyle
