Love the content guys but I think you guys put the wickers on backwards. Heard supposed to go behind leading edge of vent to evacuate are without creating too much drag. I have them and the picture shows it that way!
Yes we did! Instruction fail on our part. Already fixed em :)
Whats a wicker?
FRS, vents and ken all the old school content you will ever need. Can’t wait to see this FRS rip again. How worried are you the new downforce might rip the splitter off, looks secure tho guys .. good job
Just threw DTC60's on my NA yesterday, I am blown away by how much more stopping power they have over my old stop tech hybrid street/track pads. They are wicked, they were shooting sparks when i was braking at night haha, it freaked me out at first!
I don't why but Ken always gives me a vibe that he is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
That's how he gets ya
I LOVE THAT THE FRS IS BACK. MORE FRS.
Good to see some FR-S content👍
End plates on the splitter would give good gains as well.
I love the time lapse of PT working is ass off while Dave sits in the chair, eats half a pizza and looks at the interwebz.
Classic Speed Academy right there.
Why does Peter talk so breathy. He literally sighs after every couple of words lol
Love ya PT 😄
It's hard work making videos!!
It’s a way of preparing(and thinking) before you speak. Many presidents are taught a variation of the same skill.
It’s especially necessary when speaking on UA-cam. One wrong word and the haters’ll be flocking 😈🤬
Great job guys! I wish I had this install video before I installed my Verus vents. Everything went great but cutting into your hood is always so stressful.
Yes it's a bit unnerving but the result is well worth it!
I love those kind of mods!
*these* *kinds* **
Looks good I have the same vents on my hood, but you installed the front pressure creating plates wrong. They fit under the hood and stick up through the first slot, this allows them to be removed without having to take the whole vent off. I think you have them mirrored to where they should be.
Man I've been waiting so long for this, just seeing the car on the background always gave me hope it would return!!!
I'm glad to see the return of this car.
You get the added benefit of water cooled electrics.....love the front brakes..nice work
More FRS content please! Love this build.
Try prolonging the front splitter further under the engine, will increase the front splitter efficiency, though adding packaging issues of course. Great episode!
There is a full undertray from the factory which certainly aids in aero and I suspect is why our diffuser is built so short.
Love this build, glad to see it back!
Awesome work guys! Love how the FRS looks. Just subscribed and cant wait to watch more on this build.
Good to see the surgeon again 👍
PT rocking that wedding ring like a champ!
I think the "Gurney's" (as they called them) actually get installed on the inside of the hood with the lip popping up in the first louver opening instead of being installed between the louver and hood with the lip in front of the louver assembly. In other words, while looking down on the hood turn 'em 180° and put 'em under instead of on top of the hood.
Watching this in my Speed Academy t-shirt!
Even with an old friend like the FRS, sometimes you need to be a cut up and let them vent, cooler heads prevail (and don't blow their gaskets).
Back to frs time to watch.
Love it, when I think SA this is the content I think of. Great work guys.
yayyyyy more 86!! cant wait to see this thing in person on aug 25th
I have waited so long for more FR-S content
Finally! I've missed this car!
Miss seeing this build !
Hope to see lots more of this car!
And the FRS is backkk!
You should feel a bit more slippery thru the air now. Lower under hood pressure and temps should be noticeable too.
Damn.. That hood looks so clean. Loving it! Keep it up! 😎
KEN! Miss that guy!
Is it just me or does it look like the openings/cut-outs in the hood are bigger than the vents?
lol that "subaru" on the underside of the hood...
Wow! Your Ferodo DS1.11 lasted quite a long time. I run them on my stock OEM brakes and only lasts 1 year, maybe 7-9 track days between TMP and DDT :(
Oversized brakes mean they stay cooler and therefore will last longer!
If only #Milwaukee made some tool that could easily cut those vent holes, and showcased it here right after the air saw for contrast. I guess we'll never know... ❌🔪❌ 😆
Vents are looking sweet!
FINALLY!!! :D
Maybe you could direct the air from the front diffusers to cool the brakes?
Yes! More FRS!!!
@speed academy "Wet" carbonfiber vs "Dry" carbonfiber is Dry carbon worth 2-3x times the price? Do you think it's worth it? All I could find out is Dry carbon carbonfiber has less chance of cracking & is stronger, I was looking @ carbonfiber hoods for my Subaru wrx- I just wanted your opinion on which is better?(street use)
Amazing content love the Aero is this video a true time attack car :)
Dry carbon is lighter and pretty much for race car use where weigh matters significantly. For street cars, wet is the way to go unless you really care about weight that much.
Thankyou! :)
gotta extend that splitter into a full flat under tray then into a rear diffuser for some real aero, and perhaps tie those front diffusers into some brake ducts for cooling, nice vid nonetheless!
Looking sharp DP
Very good idea in using full body protection when cutting the carbon front-splitter, carbon shards are nasty....
Where is the latest Celica update guys? Been 3 weeks. I’m keen!
Yes more Subaru powered things! Cool video guys!
I would have glued that support piece of wood to the diffuser part. XD
looks like the vent is installed wrong. I see some gap.
Geez man I just did the ap rotors, versus hood vents and diffuser for my BRZ... my BRZ has become the speed academy rep 🤦🏻♂️
what the fuck is up Speed Academy Nation! it’s your host, DP!
lmao he looks like Keemstar
Why not design some adjustable dive planes where the fog lights should be in the front?
Hood vent would have been more efficient towards the back of the hood.
It would have let more of the hot air out of the engine compartment and somewhat fix the low pressure zone at the bottom of the windshield.
The bottom of the windshield is a high pressure zone. Not the best place for vents.
Smashed it ten times!!
Why did you guys decide to go with the Ap racing calipers over the 08 sti break swap ? (:
After the air saw blade falling out and the box cutter snapping, why would you let Pete near a bandsaw? LOL.
Trackspec vents are better. Have you guys used Winmax pads?
MOAR MOAAAR FRS !!
FRS BABYYY
I have no business watching scion videos but i did cause it's speed academy 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Need way way way way more of Ken!
Good to see the old Ken doll back. Haha
Make the Fr-s great again!
Curious, Did anyone check to make sure the air pressure was lower above the hood vent?
DTC-80 sounds like a bit too much mu, those are like formula 3 levels of friction.
Check out verus engineerings website; they have the louvers analysis there
the red car in the background - what is it?
Link to carbon fiber hatch plz.
at last a good episode
@speed academy, I want to know at what speed the diffusers start adding some real downforce to the front of the car?
Verus in one of their youtube videos state that the frs/BRZ start to witness turbulent flow as low as 5 MPH! .... not sure that was around the hood or the splitter
3:10 so dirty haha
Mcm tribute?
good music choice haha
that grinder made pacman sounds
I think you put the wickers on backwards?
Exactly what I was thinking, I don't think they should be poking out in front of the louvers.
Nope, that is the correct way. Looks odd at first but it's the right way.
No they are definitely backwards. Go look at the Versus Engineering testing video on their channel
Having installed these on two different cars. He did put them on wrong. They are installed on the underside and poke up through
371 Motorsport They Mount from
Underside and stick up at the front. Same function as you describe, but cleaner looking. They are also mounted with studs and locking nuts. After thousands of miles with all kinds of driving the nuts haven’t moved.
Its a DAD"S HAT HOMIE!
I miss ken lol.
WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Where can I get foam like that?
@KYLE.ENGINEERS may cringe on the front diffuser location but still cool XD
Nice!!
wheres kens rx7? does ken do his own videos?
NICE!!!!
More Ken
If you're looking into aero, you should look at this link for some basic know how: superhachi.com/theory/downforce/
The way you have the splitter diffusers will push a lot of air into the fenders of the FRS. You might have to vent them.
You should re-tune now that you get more flow! jkjkjk
From my limited experience (bare that in mind...) The leading edge of the diffusers sticking down doesnt provide a smooth transition and is going to increase drag and cause the air to separate away instead of attaching upwards as intended
It may not be large at that point, but there is a boundary layer, which means the slight thickness of the plastic will not effect diffuser performance much, if at any.
You installed the wickers for the hood vents incorrectly. They go under the hood with the wicker poking up in front of the first vent.
So does this mean you got custody of the car from Toyota Canada?
Safety police here- I'm pretty sure that 'best practice' is to not wear gloves when using a bandsaw.
This probably does fuck all to the aero. And probably the same to cooling.
0:44 W R O N G ! Step 1 is,
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!
First from Poland ps. Good Job
Any discount. Lol
"Budget" aero on our FR-S...
...adds USD$2,500 Voltex wing.
K swap frs🤞
Maybe one day!
Calling it as I see it. Louvers are over priced, no need for carbon vents on a metal hood. Wickers don't look like sound fluid dynamics, I'm no expert but if they do create a low pressure zone above the louvers they are most likely causing turbulence on the wind shield, maybe causing de-lamination on top the car. Why place the louvers on the front half of the hood, why not bring cooling air from the front dam through the heat exchanges and then let it out as it flows over the engine, through the aft portion of the hood. This would definitely help with down force by giving the air coming into the engine some where to go once it hit the fire wall. Instead, what you have now is the exchange air being pulled out before it touches the mid point of the engine and then a big high pressure zone of hot stagnant air from mid point of the engine to the fire wall slowly draining from the car's normal (self defined as insufficient) means of egress. Of course venting the hood anywhere will give some better flow to the heat exchanges which is what cools the engine but I wouldn't purposely put them in a place where they will not vent the hot gasses trapped in the engine bay.
Oh just noticed they are not carbon fiber, what the hell are you paying 209 for then? Damned Trump tariffs.
Since you're no expert, we suggest actually calling them, Verus Engineering has many on staff and they have done all the work to ensure those vents are in the right spot which I'm sure they'll be glad to explain to you.
As for price... Go ahead and make them cheaper, it's a free market. Until then, don't complain about other people's prices when you have no idea how much goes into R&D, production, etc.
Ok, point taken. I spoke without checking prices on hood vents. Verus is pretty competitive considering ebay aluminium universal louvers are not far off and obviously don't come made to fit the brz/frs. Maybe project binky has thrown my fabrication expectations a little out of wack. If you paid yourself 25 bucks an hr you could easily spend twice for the same result.
It's much harder to pull air out of the back half of the hood due to the pressure increase and air velocity decrease caused by the windshield. In fact, car companies have put vents in that location to have air flow the opposite direction, see cowl induction for example. The location of the Verus vents strikes a good balance between being far forward enough to not have that pressure issue, but not too far forward that it doesn't have a positive affect on under-hood pressures and temperatures.
Daniel O'Donnell thanks. That makes total sense. If you are using the front half of your hood to vent a sealed and ducted radiator, is there a best practice to move air out of the engine bay? In that case should you consider vent toward the windshield or just leave it.
Third
imo i dont like the lip infront of those louvers.
