Mel rules - his forte is obviously not impressions - but the fact that he does them so well as just a throwaway aspect of his many talents points to his overall comedic genius. Yes, genius. We ALL were young in 1970, youth is wasted on the young indeed.
Wonderful! Mel was, is so approachable. Approachable will get a lasting legacy, which it has gotten him that. Ann Bancroft was the most beautiful person and the most consummate Absurdist actress. I Love Mel. Apart from the laughs, I love Mel.
Brooks revived his impression of Sinatra in the Hitchcock tribute/ satire "High Anxiety" singing the title song to Madeline Kahn. Brooks relates in an interview that Sinatra enjoyed the impressionand conveyed his thanks. In a more recent interview with Cavett for Turner Classic Movies, Brooks tells a hysterical anecdote about having lunch with Hitchcock at Chasen's, during which the director ordered a full course meal with shrimp, steak and ice cream, then ordered the exact meal again.
and sorta kinda crown thy good wit a big fat gang-a muddahood....scoobydoo schooby doo I LUV MEL BROOKS!!!!! he is hilarious hes made some of my fav movies ever!! :D
Brooks's song in High Anxiety (he was playing a shrink) was flawless. His awed companion asks if he ever thought of being a singer. He says, "Nah, the big bucks are in psychiatry-- er, I mean, ah, the, um, the satisfaction of uh, helping people...." But this shtick? Sad to say, it's starting to seem a long, long time ago.
Mel brooks is still the best. Such a talented performer and director. I miss the days of actual talented people like Mel. Especially when you look at what we have now. No way does the performers of today stack up against the ones of the past. How did we get to such a place?
Mel Brooks is doing satire not trying to do spot on impressions. That is why he says their sisters, etc. It is the comedy behind the comedy that is so funny.
How about the confidence to be “surprised” by Cavett and spontaneous to get up there and do a bit, no hemming or hawing or pshaw! I saw Mel once at canters deli in Los Angeles, he was finishing up his meal and he was just like that personality in real life. In a loud voice he said to all the waitresses who loved him “thanks for the good service”! And I’m sure he left a comparable tip too.
Lynn Turman uh...i had never heard him sing! he seems like a gruff voiced fella. i was not expecting any melllifluousness (pun intended) or actual vocal talent. ive read his autobio and other bios and seen lots of docs about him and never knew he was a talented singer!
genius mchaggis He sings the title song to his movie HIGH ANXIETY plus he sings in The History of the World, part 1. I guess he forgot to mention those movies in his autobiography.
Dan Kelly well mel is not an "old school actor" he started out as a talented comedy writer. then as a director and scriptwriter. he didnt follow the actor route at all. as such his singing talents surprised me. and im LOVING IT.
the third one i wish we never would have lost was james palance. he was probably the only one besides eastwood that could be funny and a badass at the same time
Awesome! I got some pictures Mel Brooks at his star ceremony yesterday and a video clip of Mel singing. Check my page for the video and link to my blog for pictures. It was so much fun.
Miss these truly talented entertainers. Talented, smart, worked on their craft and respected their audiences.
Old Blue Eyes never sounded so good. And the piano accompaniment is excellent.
and he sings great too..what a performer....!

His Sinatra was EXCELLENT!
Love the Sinatra impression.
Look at those microphones...
This is fairly early Brooks...
This is really early Cavett...
This is brilliant.
(That is Rex Reed sitting next to him.)
unbelievable sinatra. complete with the vibrato....
OMG Susan Bogart and Hilda Cagney. uncanny!
We must NEVER lose Mel Brooks. I don't want to be morbid, or callous or whatever, but we've got to keep him. Him and Clint Eastwood. They stay.
Great stuff! I never knew that Mel Brooks did some impressions of some of our late great celebrities. Awsome! Thnaks again. :)
That reminds me of Mel's High Anxiety song
Wonderful! Mel was, is so approachable. Approachable will get a lasting legacy, which it has gotten him that. Ann Bancroft was the most beautiful person and the most consummate Absurdist actress. I Love Mel. Apart from the laughs, I love Mel.
Frank totally sits and smokes just like that!
That golden voice Mel!!
The "impressions" carried off by Brooks & Cavett-of men with full heads of hair are striking
All three were superb.
He was smokin that cig like a splif
I never knew Mel did any impressions; he's not bad!
This guy is the king of funny! He is still doing well and he smokes, what the heck!
I thought he captured the essence of Sinatra, even if it wasn't exactly the same as the Chairman.
Michael Rosen Yeah, that was a solid impression.
He used this same impression during a scene in High Anxiety.

Actually it was dinner. Not lunch.
I love Mel. Such a talent.
oh how I miss the Cavett Show.
nothing like it nowadays.
Wow, *hilarious* Frank Sinatra impression! Very funny...
I think of Brooks as one of those comedians who is just mildly amusing most of the time, but when he gets it just right he's hilarious.
and sorta kinda crown thy good wit a big fat gang-a muddahood....scoobydoo schooby doo
I LUV MEL BROOKS!!!!! he is hilarious hes made some of my fav movies ever!! :D
he will always be one of the best
Cavett's impeccable diction is unfailing. Nobody on TV who speaks in the English language half as well these days, such a shame.
Exactly!
Most host rely on bullshit games to fill gaps with segments written by a staff of 10 plus
Very good.
he did that in "high anxiety" hysterical
Amazing to see them smoking at that time....
Who didn't smoke back then.
great brooks never looses it
Mel Brooks singing. Now I can see where HIGH ANXIETY came from!
Great stuff and that has to be one of the longest lasting cigarettes I've ever noticed.

Mel was a WW2 HERO !! Funny as they came !! The movies 4 sure !!
Mel Funn! Still kicking in his 90's! Is that Rex Reed next to him?
I love Mel Brooks - from ' The Twelve Chairs' onwards.
Toxic tobacco smoke should have NEVER been allowed on TV or anywhere else, for that matter. BAN IT ALL, NOW!
You have to love the mel!
this is just great.
Brooks's song in High Anxiety (he was playing a shrink) was flawless. His awed companion asks if he ever thought of being a singer. Mel brooks is great
The best!
HUMOR TO WHICH WE COOD RELATE & ENJOY...WHERE DI IT GO?
The best, the best, THE BEST!!! Mel is GOD!!!
Mel brooks is still the best. Such a talented performer and director. I miss the days of actual talented people like Mel. Especially when you look at what we have now. No way does the performers of today stack up against the ones of the past. How did we get to such a place?
You are 100% right.
I love him !!!
I can't look at Mel with out busting a gut!!
Mel Brooks is doing satire not trying to do spot on impressions. That is why he says their sisters, etc. It is the comedy behind the comedy that is so funny.
Sinatra "Oh Beautiful" - a good National Anthem!! ;-))
Jimmy
Excellent!!!
How about the confidence to be “surprised” by Cavett and spontaneous to get up there and do a bit, no hemming or hawing or pshaw! Lynn Turman
uh...i had never heard him sing! he seems like a gruff voiced fella. i was not expecting any melllifluousness (pun intended) or actual vocal talent. ive read his autobio and other bios and seen lots of docs about him and never knew he was a talented singer!
genius mchaggis He sings the title song to his movie HIGH ANXIETY plus he sings in The History of the World, part 1. I guess he forgot to mention those movies in his autobiography.
+genius mchaggis All the old school actors had to be more than just a pretty face to make it.
Dan Kelly
well mel is not an "old school actor" he started out as a talented comedy writer. then as a director and scriptwriter. he didnt follow the actor route at all. as such his singing talents surprised me. and im LOVING IT.
Ah, the good old times where a celebrity could easily smoke during a show and no one gave him crap about it, lol.
Mel Brooks is DA MAN
the third one i wish we never would have lost was james palance. he was probably the only one besides eastwood that could be funny and a badass at the same time
after jesus mel brooks is the greatest jew.
There's a bit of Bennett in his Sinatra.
the only way I know this is old is because there is someone smoking indoors
When did they forbid cigarettes on TV talk shows ??
Notice how the questionably-dressed Rex Reed (wisely) stayed completely out of the way?
I think that other guy was Rex Reed, the Hollywood reporter.
What happened to the 2000 yo man?
Awesome! I got some pictures Mel Brooks at his star ceremony yesterday and a video clip of Mel singing. Check my page for the video and link to my blog for pictures. It was so much fun.
EPIC!!!
Beautiful time when they would take whisky for a couple of hours before showtime and the cameras 🥃
Genius
