  • Introducing Reserve, the world's first 100% precision-milled, vintage-inspired mouthpiece. Learn more at www.woodwinds.daddario.com/res...
Inspired by the most prized, vintage mouthpieces of the 1920s, the Reserve harnesses modern technology, pioneered by D'Addario, to recreate the incomparable craftsmanship found in these legendary works of art. Milled-not molded-from hard rubber for a higher level of consistency, every Reserve mouthpiece is machined to the strictest tolerances. But make no mistake: the true beauty of Reserve lies beyond its polished angles, glorious curves and proprietary materials to something far more remarkable... its sound.

A mouthpiece is worth what people will pay for it. Firms making these mouthpiece will, of course, tell you the are great. Lying is endemic in the musical trade, just as in most businesses.
20% of commercial reeds may work - we are told they are precision made - but that precision is irrelevant if the product doesn't work. Same with mouthpieces - each one works when customised for the individual, but there is no guarantee.

I would say that some companies produce more consistent reeds than others though.

The thing about reeds is they have to work with the mouthpiece. And a lot of the mouthpieces off the assembly line have uneven facings. This makes the mouthpiece very picky in reeds so you only have 2 good reeds in a box, maybe less. If you have your mouthpiece adjusted to be perfectly symmetrical, you’re going to get more good playing reeds.

All these players got paid in order to say positive comments about these mouthpieces. That's how I got trapped into buying one of these - never again!

Well D Addarios mouthpieces are good, but definitely not for a professional. I play on Clark Fobe mouthpieces.

The only problem with them is that the bore is on the small side so they feel a bit too tight and stuffy. With some slight modifications they play pretty amazingly. Only other mass produced mouthpieces that compare are the black diamond and selmer’s concept. Both also need slight adjustments though and they okay as well if not better than $700 mouthpieces.

So, this is an ad, right?

I owned one mouthpiece and had to sell it because it was too congested. Various reed strengths were used to rectify the problem and none of them worked. These are not professional mouthpieces!!!

Matt Bell nope for everyone not just me. my lesson teacher is a doctorate in clarinet playing and she has noticed that a lot of schools recently have been sounding bad in upper registers and she realized it was the mouthpiece affecting players because ita facing instead of having a gradual gap between the reed and the face it has a sharp gap. It become so popular because it was told and advertise to be so popular but now sections are sounding bad

QuantumChris people have different concepts of sound and what "sounds good". The principal of the Houston Symphony, who also is the Eb/Solo clarinet for the NY Phil plays D'Addario Reserve. It's all subjective.

Matt Bell that's true too. it may just be how players are taught in our area. i know that with the mouthpiece i was very flat but my mouthpiece was manufactured better than others so i guess i got lucky. I know i am loving the 5rv lyre definetly been improving my upper register

No one mouthpiece works for everyone. Due, though not solely, to the fact everyone’s oral cavity, jaw structure and dental structure are different.
