  • After waiting 7 months, I finally was able to drive a reasonable distance to get my hands on and test the Kawai ES920 before deciding to buy it. This video is comparing the sounds of what I had with what is replacing it.

    Thank you! I’ve had two Yamaha digitals, and my first 88 key hammer action which a Casio.
    I moved up to a Yamaha P 155, and bought a used P 140 as a backup, but when I was getting ready to move a few years back, I decided one piano was enough and decided to keep the P 140 for its warmer sound. I’ve had it for years, and the right channel is dead, and I’ve started looking for something new, I initially was looking at Yamaha’s, but started reading about different brands, it’s hard to find them to play them and hear what they sound like, and many of these reviews are geared toward classical players, so I really appreciate hearing chording and the different voices. I’m looking for one with recording function, so I’m going to check out the specs on the Kawai ES920, the piano voicing sounded very rich, and natural!
    So thanks again for your straightforward review!

      I'm glad you found this helpful. I was frustrated when I was looking because I couldn't find a local shop that had my top 3 available so I couldn't do a side by side comparison. When the Kawai finally became available for me to try, I couldn't even remember what the other played or sounded like. I bought it because what I did remember is that the others didn't make me want to walk out of the store with them, and this one did. For me that was more than enough.
      Also, this does have recording capability. I've played with it a little bit, but I don't have much of a use for it because it isn't the primary method I use for recording in general.

    God bless your music.. continue to do this.. I think Lawai Es920 has a better speaker..but i would love to hear the difference in head phone..or perhaps wuen they are both connected in a Spund card

      I agree that an instrument can sound very different through the speakers compared to headphones or through a PA, or digital interface. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 600s, and I think the Kawai sounds fantastic through them. I also think it sounds real good through my interface. I actually had a hard time getting a good sound out of the Yamaha through my interface though. I couldn't get the EQ quite right and it always sounded like a toy. But it is a very old piano. I know a newer Yamaha would be better than my old one, but I am extremely happy with my Kawai.

    Wow, I also have P60 and I understand the action is a bit hard to control. I just upgrade to Roland FP60X. Kawai ES920 was in my mind but I couldn’t find store to try. Hope you like the Kawai action

      How are you liking the FP-60X. I have a FP-90 and sometimes I love the sound and sometimes it's just a bit off. It may be that I'm inexperienced

      @@BUJU2007 I agree with you, sometimes I wonder why it sounds good and clear, sometimes sounds muffled. Maybe after pressing different presets the ambient and the Key Touch setting changed without I realized.
      The default Key Touch = 50 is too muffled and I like to change it to 17 to sound more like acoustic piano. The middle C also sounds weird (echo of poking something like pvc pipe :)). The pedal is a bit poking to bare feet, they should make it more round shape not rectangle.
      What I like is I can record in the whole play with midi format and I can replay through audio out for recording the final version. I like the Bluetooth audio & midi feature but the BT midi isn't quite reliable.

      You had the same issue I ran into when I was first looking at the ES920. Nobody had them. I wasn't going to spend that kind of money without trying it out first. I'm glad I waited though.

    Please do compare between the ES920 and an acoustic piano. How good are the speakers on the ES920 in person when you're sitting there playing? Does the sound feel full and rich and immersive or is it sort of flat and coming out of a box? Thanks!

      I'll plan to work on that this weekend. I'll have to do something different though, as I'll be recording the piano with a pair of mics. Personally, I think the speaker sound of the ES920 is real good. It may depend on what you are used to. It is certainly better than the Yamaha P-60, but that unit is from 2003 I think. It sounds better in the room than it does in this video though because I captured the sound with my phone.
      When I upload next, I'll run both the ES920 and the Baldwin through my board and capture the audio from that. It should translate better.

      I got a ES7 and can't say for the 920 but the sound of the speaker is FANTASTIC. Sure with high-quality headphones it's even better, but only marginally so

    Hi, nice comparison. Btw, im a beginner and just bought an old P60 but dont have a sustain pedal. May I know what's yours for the P60?

    • @nevinbrown
      @nevinbrown  Рік тому

      Hi. I don't have my Yamaha anymore and don't recall what the sustain pedal was that I used with it. It wasn't the one that originally shipped with it when it was new though. I took a quick look on the web at the manual and it mentioned an FC3 foot pedal as an optional replacement pedal. My guess is it shouldn't be too difficult to find something that would work with it.

    I'm in India. How can I import this from Japan or Indonesia.
    Any suggestions from your experience. In which way you ordered this

    the Kawai sounds a lot better! I'm unfortunately on a budget and there's a Yamaha p-60 available locally for $400, although they said they are accepting offers. what do you think is a fair price for a used one in 2022?

    • @nevinbrown
      @nevinbrown  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure I can give you a good answer. I gave mine away to a friend. They came out in 2003, so they are pretty old. I would try somewhere between $250 and $300 depending on the condition, and what it comes with. Does it include an expression pedal? Does it have the sheet music mount? Mine didn't, and I wish it did when I got mine used. Does it come with a stand, or will you have to buy one? Those are the things I would think about. I would also think about whether you could get something that is more current for the same money.

    So what’s yours fave?

      Between the two in this video I prefer the Kawai to the Yamaha. For my preferences I find the action to have a better feel, and it is easier to play dynamically. It also has a more contemporary piano sample that sounds better to my ears.
      I have another video comparing the Kawai to my grand piano. When I initially got it, I felt like the experience between them was similar enough, although not exactly the same. Over time, I've come to the conclusion they are not as close as I thought, and I do prefer the grand piano over the Kawai. But the Kawai is great for playing live outside of my house.

    About the action keys, which is more good, kawai or yamaha?

    • @nevinbrown
      @nevinbrown  3 роки тому

      In this video I am comparing a brand new Kawai to a really old Yamaha, so the Kawai easily wins for the action. I wasn't able to do a comparison to something newer, like the Yamaha 515. I did play a 515 last year, and the action was good on it, but I don't remember it feeling as good to me as the Kawai when I tried it before taking it home.

      P515 has heavier keys, that's for sure. Which is best depends of your exceptations
