I love the fact that there is no “tense” music.
The heavy breathing ALONE makes it 10000 times more intense.

@@karmenshoemaker6569 I agree, and it was a very welcome surprise. One thing Cruise absolutely understands about modern cinema is the meta experience. So many people are up to speed on what's real, what's practical, and what's CGI well before a movie is released. Just sitting here watching this on UA-cam, knowing Cruise, Teller, and everyone else were actually in those cockpits out in the sky absolutely heightens the experience.
Well said
There was A LOT of cgi guys.

1:12 God, this shot. That sound. Will never forget what it was like watching this in theatres the first time. A pure EXPERIENCE.
Yep. The cinematography was far and away some of the best I've ever seen. All complaints I had about them holding out for a theater release were taken back, shredded and burned at an altar. This HAD to be in the theaters.
For me this is the best shot in the entire film. Don't get me wrong, the whole film is a masterpiece, but this shot in particular is on another level.
@@Astro95Media They were literally in the mountain cliff side filming this while they flew by, it's crazy how Barbie and other stuff gets nominated but this doesn't other than score.
My favorite WTF moment was when the 5th gen fighter did that air brake maneuver, LITERALLY even Rooster said "what the funk was that"😂
I really like the theme of the movie. Early on Admiral Cane talks about how the future doesn’t need pilots like them. But Maverick believes that pilots are crucial because they make choices that AI or anything else can’t. They act on instinct and that’s exactly what Rooster had to do here too. Fanboy didn’t get the laser in time so Rooster acted on his instinct and shot blind. It really puts into perspective how important each pilot is.
you're right. but if you replace these people in this particular situation with multiple drones or air craft driven by AI, they dont have to rush in 2 min. They can complete this mission in a longer time, destroy target, then get shot down. no one dies. cost more money but less risk. I still think AI is the future, in movies or irl.
@@kingfistloa that’s a very good point. I agree wholeheartedly, but if one of the lasers were to not work like the movie, I wonder if the outcome would be different.
@@scoobers290 there is no point in being a fighter jet pilot. No matter how good u are, ul get shot down eventually or ul crash,
@@kingfistloa expensive tech vs expendable people. Theres a reason there are soldiers that get left behind. Because its more expensive retrieving them. thats the truth
@Louis Nguyen
Intentionally allowing drones and AI to be shot down potentially hands technology over to the enemy. Probably not the best policy.
You cut the part where Hangman is cheering like crazy on the hit announcement. He wanted to be on the mission and rather than pout like a child he was ready to support and even had a major hand in saving the day. I've wondered if Maverick wanted him on deck for his "come in and save the day if we're in a dogfight" ability. He was the one that pushed Maverick the most in the dogfight scenes.
For sure.
Let me guess: you had tears in your eyes...
I honestly think your right..... hang man would remind maverick of himself in the first top gun.... hang man is a cocky pilot whose extremely skilled... just like maverick still is... so given a dog fight against 5th generation fighters that skill would be useful
@warmachine8741
Even Maverick himself admitted he was impressed by Hangman when he said "You're good...I'll give you that"
@CC-Cobalt-1043 another valid point and thsts a callback to the original top gun... Viper said something similar about maverick during training

@@CincoSnare76 That's a great visual as well.

Just noticed that Mav asked his wingman to check the lasers before approaching the target, while rooster didn't and their laser did fail.
He did he said where is my laser as to making them checking it but it went dead eyed.
@@stewy9013 Maverick told Bob to check the laser when they were 30 seconds out, Rooster told Fanboy after they were already coming over the mountain

@@JaySee8866 If bombs are dropped from say 700 feet above ground at that angle, that's like a 2 second flight before impact. Little guidance fins can't do anything at that speed and altitude, bomb is pretty much a bullet.
If they would drop bombs from 40 000 feet, that's where lasers are dead accurate.
This was my only gripe with the movie. If you're so low, you gotta dive-bomb it, oldschool. Aim with the plane. I think it would make it even better, if pilots would have to train and master this skill, not relying on guided bombs.
"Rooster, you've switched off you're targeting computer, what's wrong?"

1:14 I love how you can see Phoenix and Bob's jet right behind his from inside the cockpit while performing this extreme maneuver. My favorite shot in the movie. And the most impressive if there really was no CG in that shot.
Every plane in the movie aside from those already on the ground and Maverick's WW2 era prop plane at the end were CGI. Different planes were used as reference and then replaced digitally. The shots from inside the cockpit were real though because you couldn't see the outside of the plane to properly identify it accurately.

“BULLSEYE, BULLSEYE, BULLSEYE!” I was out of my seat in the theater and cheering! So was everyone else…. It still sends chills up and down my spine.
This has to be the best sequence in Theaters in a long long while
Just a couple of details I loved about the climax.
. The way cyclone says “send them!”
- the fact you can hear the cat shots of each dagger below deck as they take off.
- rooster saluting his plane captain/handler.
- when mav says “here it comes”as soon as they clear coffin corner.
- I knew that mav was going to fly an f-14 and I was going to annoyed if he just jumped in and took off. The start up and pulling the pins was great.
- the fact we got to see Mav really fly the hell out of a tomcat! “Splitting the throttles”
And omg sending the missile from the felon 1 into the falling felon 2.
As a teenager the first movie blew my mind. As 50 year old loser it was everything I hoped.
My first time watching this in the very beginning when they said something about Russia holding on to the f-14s.... I knew that somehow maverick was gonna be in the seat of one of them.... and I wasn't wrong and it did not disappoint
Earlier in the film, Maverick sadly reflects how he wishes he'd been a better father figure to Rooster as he grew up. Here, Rooster says "Talk to me, Dad." and it cuts straight to Maverick, his deceased dad's best friend and the remaining father figure in Rooster's life, who says "Come on kid, you can do it. Don't think, just do." And Rooster sheds his worries and becomes the great pilot Mav always knew he was. Epic.
What's especially cool at 1:14 is the inverted jet right behind Tom Cruise.
This scene wars exhilarating to watch in theatres. And you can feel the g forces the actors are experiencing
This and also because of the booming surround sound speakers exclaiming the jet engines. 😎👍

I love the lack of music in this. Last time I remember being literally on the edge of my seat in the theater
Even rewatching this man I do feel like I'm literally out of breath just captured wonderfully well on how flying a fighter jet is physically demanding than many would give credit for
This movie and Gravity (2013) are the only two movies I've seen in theathre that gave me that feeling you get when you're looking straight down from a very high point and you have the need to grab onto something not to fall, the shot at 1:13 is a great example of that.
Only in theaters this kind of scenes can be truly appreciated. Period!!!
I didn't notice it until subsequent viewings but I also love how after Fanboy pleads, "I got this, I got this," Payback is looking intently at Rooster and calls "Bombs Away," first. Almost as if to give his blessing to Rooster. Initially, I thought it was Rooster calling it 3 times. Thinking about it now, it makes so much sense. I mean who better than Payback to have seen Rooster grow so much over time (covering him as wing man in training to the confidence in speed, just moments prior). 🙌 Just goes to show, Mav picked a great, cohesive team. 💪🍻😎👌❤

Those weeks of training really paid off.
It kinda pays homage from the first movie that Rooster slows down, hesitating then just goes. Maverick did the same thing in 86, disengaging because he freaked out.

Its not like hes like 78...he was 58 when this shot...people can be sharp that age 😅
Love that there's no music in this scene. A dangerous choice by the director, but it ends up letting the sound of the fighters and the reactions from the pilots do the work creating the tension. Masterpiece!
