The unique thing about rendang in Malaysia is...there is different version of the dish in every part of Malaysia. If you go to south Peninsular Malaysia, you'll find rendang similar or the same as Minangkabau rendang. If you go to north Peninsular Malaysia you will find rendang in yellow, orange or red colour which is full of tumeric taste, while the one in Perak is totally dark nearly black in colour. If you go to Kelantan you'll find a slightly sweeter rendang which is closer or similar to Indonesian rendang in Java island. I haven't taste the ones from Sarawak and Sabah yet but I'm sure it taste quite the same but different too! That's the beauty of Malaysian rendang! I've been to both Malaysia and Indonesia. Both country represents an extensive and very unique cooking culture. The food in both country is absolutely amazing. I can say that I prefer the Malaysian version but regardless the Indonesian version is also great. Southeast Asia is very small, it is completely normal that these neighbouring countries exchange culture and things like food. Hence why there are different version of recipes. Version and originality is not the same, people. Version stands alone and we can't call out as an originality based on a version. Because of this versions, members of the gastronomy world are able to take current food and try to make it better; like the taste, the measure of preparations and so on. Rendang is not merely Sumatran inspired dish. It IS Sumatran dish ! And Sumatra is in Indonesia. You won't say Tom Yam is Thai inspired dish, will you ? Tom Yam is a Thai Dish. Both Rendang and Tom Yam you can always make variation of them but you have to acknowledge where they belong.

i think this is all misunderstanding of language. in indonesia, "rendang" refer to the type of dish that is originated from minang. so there are many type of rendang such as rendang beef, chicken or even vegetables rendang. while in malaysia "rendang" means the type of dish prepared. for example a soupy dish is called gulai so there are gulai kari(curry soup), gulai lemak(milky soup) etc. so rendang in malaysia is refer to the dish being cooked in slow cook until it tenderised and the dish become dried up. so in malaysia there many type of rendang such as "rendang minang and padang" which is originated from sumatra, "rendang tok" which is popular in perak malaysia and nothing to do with rendang in indonesia, "rendang kelantan" which is popular in kelantan malaysia and even the peranakan ethic have nyonya type of rendang and totally different from the one in indonesia. even every part of malaysia have their own type of rendang. so it is all misunderstood of language... so that is why indonesia can claim with UNESCO while in malay language it is ridiculous to claim it because it is the way of cooking, how can you claim or patent that word rendang in malay language. it is nuts. haahahaahaa....

Rendang is not merely Sumatran inspired dish. It IS Sumatran dish ! And Sumatra is in Indonesia.

i think this is all misunderstanding of language. in indonesia, "rendang" refer to the type of dish that is originated from minang. so there are many type of rendang such as rendang beef, chicken or even vegetables rendang. while in malaysia "rendang" means the type of dish prepared. for example a soupy dish is called gulai so there are gulai kari(curry soup), gulai lemak(milky soup) etc. so rendang in malaysia is refer to the dish being cooked in slow cook until it tenderised and the dish become dried up. so in malaysia there many type of rendang such as "rendang minang and padang" which is originated from sumatra, "rendang tok" which is popular in perak malaysia and nothing to do with rendang in indonesia, "rendang kelantan" which is popular in kelantan malaysia and even the peranakan ethic have nyonya type of rendang and totally different from the one in indonesia. even every part of malaysia have their own type of rendang.
so it is all misunderstood of language... so that is why indonesia can claim with UNESCO while in malay language it is ridiculous to claim it because it is the way of cooking, how can you claim or patent that word rendang in malay language. it is nuts. haahahaahaa....
