"And if you don't like fantasy RPGs then I guess you can just go off and have sex with people instead." I love fantasy RPGs, and this is hilariously, tragically true.
I pretty much agree with "I've played it for 25 hours and want to know what happens next" statement. It's one of those games that, even if it's not the best, just draws you in. It's no a so bad it's good like Ride to Hell, but a decently put together RPG which is a real rarity in this age of shooters.
Terrorstanius See I think you're just one of those people that doesn't understand what that term is supposed to mean. In my eyes at least it means a game or movie or whatever that is so so so terrible that it's actually enjoyable in an oddly fascinating way, and even more fun to bring your friends around to laugh at and have a good time
Ascarde i think he meant that its so bad you have to see it, like a woman giving birth to siamese joined together twins for the first time, you know its bad,you know you wont like it,but you just have to see it to believe it.
This game is well over 12 years old, and I think it holds up as an excellent entry title to the standard fantasy genre. Hell, I might just replay it in the near future
Let's face it, every single trope in modern storytelling goes back to the single few moments of true creativity in human history: when a guy sitting with his friends around a campfire is telling a story he heard a few years back but since he can't remember it completely and writing hasn't been invented yet, he just BSed most of it and the bits interesting enough to remember stuck around to the modern day like some sort of natural selection for creative writing.
Oh i have played it. It was the great console RPG drought at the time so i was very excited for it and got it on launch day. Let me summarize my experience for you. The most generic Human-Elf Orc story, Muddy brown textures, Invisible walls everywhere, each section of these contrived muddy dull uninteresting environments has to be loaded up first, confusing menu's, I could go on. I was HORRIFIED that a game this bad could be released.
Just beat this game moments ago and my god does it stand up after five years. I generally don't like fantasy nearly as much as scifi. So hence why it took me so long to play despite ADORING kotor and mass effect. But oh my god. I loved every second of this game. The characters and story were much better than I expected. So excited for the new dragon age now. Will be playing DA2 while I wait. I don't know why I expected anything less than an amazing rpg consider this is bio ware we are talking about.
Don't expect DA2 to be up to standard. It's not bad, it just feels like it was sold halfway through production. ***** the trick is to be an AW mage. 73% of party damage and no incaps throughout the whole game, played on nightmare difficulty. Having said that, getting 0 incaps means you have to kill Ser Cauthrien, which is not only extremely difficult, but also means you miss out on a nice story section, and of course that she dies, which is a shame because she seems a decent person.
McNab1986 The wierd thing is most people seemed to prefer the stupid combat animations in 2, even though anyone who has ever picked up a weapon or even done any exercise should be able to see how ridiculously overblown those animations are.
***** I don't really judge games on things like that, as it's not really a game centred on realism anyway, being the fact you can shoot fireballs from a 7 foot stick :) I just really hated the over simplification of pretty much everything from DA:O. Like I said before it suffered from making itself accessible to those who don't like games that require you to think to hard, or learn much about the mechanics in order to advance. I miss the genuine challenge games offered from my youth, playing the NES & SNES. Now everything has to be easy and hold your hand.
McNab1986 Well, it went from fantasy suspension of disbelief in certain elements with a few minor stupid bits, to 'flying ninja' animations, and weapons with so many spikes and blades on them that they'd be difficult even to pick up, never mind fight with. Really, anyone trying to fight like that would get exhausted within 60 seconds, and probably cut themselves more than the enemy. They should have just mo-capped some real fighters.
dragon age is basically a well built d&d campaign and world- only with only one character to fill almost all the non-combat roles. I love da, but fuck if maybe lelianna or zevran could maybe jump in when a persuasion attempt goes balls up I would have brought them along more often.
actually, zevran was usefull if you used him for backstabs, but leliana, oh my fucking god leliana. stay in the damn chapel leliana. i had the burden to carry her around most of the game because my OCD would have killed me if i didnt open every lock
I think Leilana could persuade the Chantry Mother to release Sten on your behalf if you didn't have the persuasion chops to do it but that is a rare eg it was kinda of stupid that the graphic of the halla quest showing your character 'talking' to the halla when I was actually using Aliaster's survival skills to do it.
This is the first time I've listened to this one, so its probably been said before, but.... yatzee goes on about stealing trousers and selling them; well in Dragon Age Inquisition there is this bit where one of your companions (an elf) actually does steal the trousers of some defenders of a castle, and they end up in your inventory ^_^ I now wonder if someone at Bioware if fond of Zero Punctuation, and included that bit as an easter egg (time to hit google and see if this theory is true ^_^)
After all the heat they took after Dragon age 2 they seemed to have listened to the fans. I believe DAI will be one of the top 3 games of this year with Watch Dogs and Destiny. I truly believe an open world Dragon age with a good story and good characters will be phenomenal.
The problem is that fantasy racism works within its own universe. D&D elves are more nimble than humans or Dwarves, for example. Dwarves are stout and also tend to be rather gruff. So I can understand, to some extent, Dwarves thinking that Elves are "lesser" (and vice versa) simply because their culture idealizes toughness and frontal fights, whereas Elves tend to be graceful and strategic fighters. Making it allegorical to real racism is where it falls short.
Oh yeah... I've played Origins 16 times and I still love it. I thought DA2 was the worst game ever until I played Inquisition, and now I'm saying, "You know... DA2 wasn't that bad."
Kyoko Sakura oh, and the combat in Origins was great? it"s dragon age, mate. complaining about bad combat in dragon age is like complaining about bad graphics in checkers.
I admit there was nothing special about dragon age (except some differences in the lore book) but there was something about it that made me play it about twenty times.
I think that's because DA:O lived off of cliches, but rather than aim for satire it instead tried to build on its cliches to make something familiar yet thorough. It's why people love Star Wars (yet another franchise BioWare has made a few games for).
There is one point he got wrong. The origin stories have more than just unique dialogue. Depending on which you choose you can meet major characters that play a big role later on in the game and have a unique relationship as well as unique motivations for wanting to help or kill the person. Also there are special endings depending on your race, for example the Human Noble can become King or Queen.
Dragon Age: Origins is my favorite game. I've played through it so many times and find new things that I missed other times quite a bit. I keep wanting them to release another Dragon Age like the original but the seem to be straying farther from it.
+Sir Fur Well, it's your choice to feel how you want to. Doesn't change that dragons never existed, so it would be weird for someone to feel like they have the soul of one in their body. May I ask, what does it feel like to identify otherkin? I've never talked to one before.
***** Idk. I'm not one, and that's why I said I needed one to consult. If you're not saying I'm one, then who are you asking how it feels? Because I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was one.
+Sir Fur The Angry Furry Generally, the only people who defend otherkin are otherkin. Furthermore, it's a fine choice, but otherkin tend to be the kind of drama-wallowing shit-eating whiny fucks that made furries an easy target.
the thing I love most about this game is the ability to make characters with different personalities one time I made a crazy elf mage obsessed with funny looking hats
The game lives on dialogue , I personally dislike the combat as it gets way to clusterfucky and the AI is dumber than Donald Trump but it grows on you. This all didn't matter to me however as the voice acting and dialogues just feel so immersive and make me become greatly invested in the characters like in almost no other game. The game is also incredibly atmospheric. not to mention you can mod the game , you don't even have to go all overboard like a few good mods and you're up with a great game. one example being the morrigan restoration patch. This review is my introduction to what Dragon Age is and I'd like to know if the species mentioend at 1:49 is a real thing in the game or a joke Yahtzee made up or something else.
I can't help but laugh that Morrowind was thrown into the list of box art for RPG players that don't get laid, especially since I have a tattoo of Azura's Star and was watching this while taking care of my three month old daughter while my wife is at work.
I think that in this case, "fantasy" is a label given to a specific genre of games/media/books that has elves, dwarves, magic, and swords. I don't think they mean "fantasy" as in the random imagination of individuals. I think the label "fantasy" once was actually a fantasy in the sense that it wasn't mainstream and was actually someone's imagination (Tolkien/C.S. Lewis are examples) and it was so popular that people wanted more, and "fantasy" was the name that was slapped on the new genre.
No, I'm 22 and near graduating from college. I am easily distracted as it is and know that a relationship would only make it more difficult for me to focus on my classes.
D&D is still the best RPG ever. It's big, settings and characters are infinitely variable, and everything always looks good in its super hi-def imaginatovision. Plus it has a system that works and allows for as much creativity in combat as the DM can handle at once.
Ohhh and did I mention that those big moral choices actually effect how not only the story ends, but also how you face the final challange. Anyho, yes DOA is abit your typical stand of the line RPG. But it does it right, and your choices actually effect the game ALOT more then this video sugjests.
My main problem with the game is it re-enacts the dark ages of our real world, the tervintum imperium is the "Roman empire of our real world", the Chantry is the Christian church "of our real world, that toppled/destroyed the Roman empire an takes over the world", the Templars of the Chantry are the "Knights Templar of our real world", the Wizards guild are the "Alchemists of our real world, who are being oppressed by the Christian church", Grey Wardens are the "Italians of our world (it's because they weren't being oppressed by the Christian church because they fought back against the oppression)", the Darkspawn are the "Pagans of our real world", the Elves in the game are the "Jewish of our real world, and thats why they were the slaves in the game", the Dwarves are the "Vikings of the Norse-folk/peoples of our real world", and oddly enough the Qunarians are the "Russian Communists of our real world"! ..... I gotta tell ya ..... WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with Bioware Entertainment?
I don't know what's wrong with Bioware, but I can tell you that your comparisons are incredibly off- and Grey Wardens = Italians? Dude, the Catholic Church is IN Italy. The Italians didn't "fight back" against the church, it's the Church's fucking epicenter. You can't spit in Italy without hitting some ancient Church or Cathedral.
Vosian is that so? The very point of "fantasy" is that it's NOT SUPPOSED to re-enacts anything in the real world ... thats why it's called fantasy "aka magical fiction"!
klinton kavanagh Except the point of fantasy, or at least, good fantasy, is not to be mere escapism, but to use plot and setting elements of the story to serve as allegory for real-world history and politics, such as Sauron and his orcs in Lord of the Rings, and the ensuing war with the Free Peoples of Middle Earth, serving as allegory for both World Wars. Good fantasy uses fictional characters, races, and nations that have allegorical ties to real world counterparts so that it may hold up a mirror to our world, so that we can see the conflicts and issues of history, politics, and philosophy through a new perspective.
Seems like I'm one of the few who loved the combat system in DA:O. Coming out of a long period of not playing any games after finally getting bored with Skyrim after 800 hours (fucking hell), DA:O's combat system was heaven for me. Even better for me was Dragon Age 2, which I am still in the midst of obsessing over.
Fantasy existed before Tolkien, in fact Tolkien's utter dominance of the genre is somewhat recent, 30 years ago there was a lot of Fantasy that had little in common with the middle-earth lite that is now inescapable.

Norse mythology, Tolkien didn't exactly pull all of those archetypes out of the bloody ether.

neosaneo2 Yeah, I can't really take Anders with me anywhere considering I decided that he annoyed me a little bit... I'm not a big Anders fan.
Ozkimo Jack!
can't blame you for that
neosaneo2 I don't really understand what you mean with your first statement.
I had to go for a walk when he said shadowhumper class. I couldnt take the laughter.
This review is my introduction to what Dragon Age is and I'd like to know if the species mentioend at 1:49 is a real thing in the game or a joke Yahtzee made up or something else.
the classes he made up were mocking Mass Effect's classes. the actual classes are things like Vanguard, Sentinel, and Adept.
I love your reviews amigo, thank you. From Mexico...keep up the great reviews coming!
I wonder if that contest allowed doom total conversions
DA:O + Naurunappula = Instant win!!
I can't help but laugh that Morrowind was thrown into the list of box art for RPG players that don't get laid, especially since I have a tattoo of Azura's Star and was watching this while taking care of my three month old daughter while my wife is at work.
***** Thus why I found it funny. ;)
Normally this type of comment comes off as attention seeking or douchebaggish.
...But you, I like.
I liked the joke about A7X. I honestly thougth no one of any importance knew those guys existed.
NO ADS YEH!!!!
I really wish he would redo some of these videos after he finishes them.
The Dragon Age, as in everything is made of Dragons, applies surprisingly well to the setting of Monster Hunter.
I could not. Control. My laughter. XD
"In the name of the Maker"? Don't you mean Lord Si-mon?
at 2:00 is ELF supposed to be a "Bad word' ... LOL ..or is the wood elf the ONLY one you liked?
@AethyrGuard Most of its viewers watch it on the escapist site since that is where it is uploaded on a regular basis.
No, I'm 22 and near graduating from college. I am easily distracted as it is and know that a relationship would only make it more difficult for me to focus on my classes.
not looking for thumbs guys but don't you just love that feeling of seeing one you haven't yet seen.
Oh, now I want to roll up a Shadowhumper.
D&D is still the best RPG ever. It's big, settings and characters are infinitely variable, and everything always looks good in its super hi-def imaginatovision. Plus it has a system that works and allows for as much creativity in combat as the DM can handle at once.
But the "Gorotcovv" is one of the best classes for Tanking... and gardening?
doesn't new vegas still have the record for most recorded dialog?
Ohhh and did I mention that those big moral choices actually effect how not only the story ends, but also how you face the final challange.
Anyho, yes DOA is abit your typical stand of the line RPG. But it does it right, and your choices actually effect the game ALOT more then this video sugjests.
Oh my, that actually makes alot of sense. I tip my hat to you.
I don't feel this review did the game adequate justice.
Yahtzee considers it his mission to nitpick games to death. This is actually a rather positive review by his standards.
Man, i really wanna play as a Shadowhumper now...
Vosian I'm not good with history, so what I made one mistake, BUT my comparisons are NOT off it DOES re-enacts the dark ages of our real world!
klinton kavanagh
So does every other high fantasy under the sun. Dragon Age is not unique in that aspect.
Vosian is that so? The very point of "fantasy" is that it's NOT SUPPOSED to re-enacts anything in the real world ... thats why it's called fantasy "aka magical fiction"!
klinton kavanagh
Except the point of fantasy, or at least, good fantasy, is not to be mere escapism, but to use plot and setting elements of the story to serve as allegory for real-world history and politics, such as Sauron and his orcs in Lord of the Rings, and the ensuing war with the Free Peoples of Middle Earth, serving as allegory for both World Wars. Good fantasy uses fictional characters, races, and nations that have allegorical ties to real world counterparts so that it may hold up a mirror to our world, so that we can see the conflicts and issues of history, politics, and philosophy through a new perspective.
No, I'm in college, so I typically eat lunch in class, no shortage of conversation there.
That's why he such an epic critic.
will I be able to run this game on a modern pc that isn't even a gaming pc?
@AethyrGuard Benjamin "Yahtzee" Croshaw.
He's also the fast taking fellow.
Those Imps are too adorable! I want to play Imps VS Fanboyz :D
I personally am in love with the game, and this was absolutely hilarious xDDD
I have watched every episode at least twice on the Escapist.
But they were the people who took the rings as gifts without question.
I like how he doesn't hold back at all when criticising the games that were by his fans in his honour
LMAO "who sits and reads 9 novels at once if they dont live in the fucking Bastille?"
Can someone give me a link to Yahtzee's Last Stand
awesome reviews!
Fantasy existed before Tolkien, in fact Tolkien's utter dominance of the genre is somewhat recent, 30 years ago there was a lot of Fantasy that had little in common with the middle-earth lite that is now inescapable.
