Both this and Gori took me right back to my childhood in terms of aesthetics. There's a demo out called Tackle Box, and it's huge. Highly recommend to keep an eye on its development!
I disagree with the controller features in the gameplay to a point. The ship you use to travel while fixing the mothership IS the DualSense controller, and this game and Playroom make it clear that, lore wise, the robots like to live in those controllers. So them utilizing off the wall features from their homes by having the players use them IRL actually somewhat helps with immersion. Plus, instead of blowing in the controller, you can just say “FUUUUUUUUUUUCK” to awaken the world serpent in the God of War level.
If he's embarrassed at blowing on the controller because somebody might see him and associate that sight with a sexual act, my dude needs therapy of some kind.
To this point I'd also like to add that GOOD use of the DualSense features has been shown outside of the Astro games and was sublime in those instances as well. Returnal is probably number one in this department, followed by Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. Even just the basic trigger tension stuff in Spider-Man 2 is nice.
This, I think, is key. If you take all the IP out of Astro Bot or Smash Bros they're still good games, the nostalgia IP stuff is a bonus. Stuff like PS Battle Royale tried to use the IP to sell a game that was worse than its alternatives. Heck, look back at any of the old school mascot platformers or other corporate branded games. The ones that are remembered fondly are remembered for actually being good, not because everybody loved Bucky the Boba Tea Platypus or whatever.

I think calling something a rip off that isn't 100% blatantly copy-pasted is a bit of bad faith argument. I would argue this is more of an homage. We want games to copy games like Mario Galaxy and odyssey because those are good examples of platformers. We should not be discouraging games from copying them. If something works and it works right then more developers should do it. The reason that this game is so good is because it takes a page from Nintendo's book. That is something that should be celebrated not complained about
The line between rip off and homage is the difference in variety. Ps2 had tons of exclusive games so the occasional mariokart clone was fun. Ps5 has absolutely nothing. So, making a Galaxy clone is a little pathetic.
And yet on the other hand, that's the first step towards the kind of committee-approved template-stamp mass-produced Triple Ayyy swill that we've been trudging through for the past decade. A proven idea is the first thing that the moneymen look for to cut costs and assure investors.

Astrobot is a celebration of what was effectively the golden age of gaming made by people who contributed to it. It’s the video game equivalent of looking through photo collages of your loved ones before an accident or divorce tore everything apart.
Ooof that last second slap at the Infamous games hurt haha. I know that they don't seem like much now but the first two games were formative experiences in my gaming development and for that I miss them dearly from time to time. Shame Sony had to tank the whole franchise by killing Cole off at the end of the second game and trying to replace him with a sheet of cardboard masquerading as a personality in Second Son, killing the whole franchise with it.
And oh man that final gag hit me like a truck with so many emotions. God I love infamous and yahtzee’s takes I may not agree with all them but man do they always give me the best time.
Damn, that escalated quickly lol In all seriousness though, I do share the “PS5 as a dust gathering machine” sentiment wholly. If not for my sis who just somehow managed to only start playing games now, I’d have sold it long ago, given how the roaster of interesting exclusives for the next X years looks like … an empty cupboard?
I feel “how is it different from Mario Galaxy” is a disingenuous question when “how is it the same as Mario Galaxy” hasn’t even been answered. It’s a 3D platformer with a cute mascot, but that’s a bit shallow. Mind you, I haven’t played the game as I gave away my PS5, and I know Yahtzee’s reviews aren’t exactly meant to be in depth, I just thought that was odd as presented.
This video is exactly what I was trying to say with my video on Astro -- playing through Astro's world is like viewing an alternate universe where Sony cares about its IPs and third party relationships, but you quickly realize it's his world you're looking at, not reality.
Congratulations, the PS5 has a game, and a great one at that! Now we just need about 20 more and then I can consider buying it! Welcome to the AAA sphere, everybody!
I have to admit, it is nutty how many remasters we keep receiving. Even for a game series that is not even ten years old. I can understand if it's a title ten, maybe even twenty making a return. But very rarely a new IP makes noise. Or in Concord's case, a fleeting Goofy scream while sailing into the heavens
3:39 I really enjoyed the controller “gimmicks” first time since being a kid I felt like I was pretending to be an aeroplane. And the climbing mechanic deserves a full game thanks to the resistance in the triggers.
I wish he would have gone into how its like galaxy. Aside from ice skating, I can't think of any you couldn't apply to most 3d platforming collectathauns.
4:00 Always happy to see other people recognize that Gravity Rush is Sony's best IP of the ones that just got swept under the rug for no reason. Whoever put together that visual gag gets a thumbs up from me. That being said, Keiichiro Toyama (the creator of Silent Hill and Gravity Rush) left Sony in 2020. So, even if we got a new Gravity Rush game, it would probably be soulless and bad. It's a weird place to be when you wish there was more to a franchise, but simultaneously you're happy that they're not trying to ruin it by plowing on without any creative vision.
Honestly I don’t know how it being a copy of Mario Galaxy is a con Mario Galaxy fucking owns so if you’re going to copy one platformer have it be that one
I guess that means I'm one of the few people who owns and likes Gungriffon Blaze. Love that game. I replayed it maybe 2 years ago. Feel like I should try again just because Yahtzee referenced it.

Astro Bot LOOKS like it's a ton of fun to play, its bright and colourful and I really WANT to play it, but its also $80 and in this day and age, I struggle to be able to afford more than a couple games a year while maintaining some kind of financial stability and responsibility. To that end, I'm really grateful to Ben for telling me it actually may be as fun as it looks, so I'll probably actually buy it at some point
A juicy episode. The sheer abundant richness of Yahtzee's observations this episode were a perpetual stew. Perhaps inadvertently reflecting the approach to incorporating IPs in this game, but it seems that's even more grounds for parody as it is audience appeal.
And it wasn't even a great historical romp because of all of the bridges Sony Gaming has been burning in it's Console War Victory Lap. SquareEnix didn't let a single Final Fantasy, Dragons Quest, or Kingdom Hearts reference into the game despite those being inseparable up to 10 years ago. And Disney cracked down so much that even though Sony's the one with the Spiderman license, that didn't get a reference either - and the PS2 Spiderman game was a highlight of the console! The game might as well be a post-mortem for the golden age of PlayStation. Sure, a great celebration, but only of what came before - and only what's left at that.
This is probably one of the funniest reviews Yahtzee has done. I was laughing throughout the video. (I'm not saying Yahtzee has not been putting out great stuff it's just that this one is an absolute banger.)
Yahtzee really knows how to dig into the heart of a game! I love how he points out the little details that make ASTRO BOT so special. It feels like a love letter to gaming history. 🎮💕 Plus, I would totally play a whole game of just those cute little robots vibing around! 😄

For a positive review of a PlayStation exclusive, this is the most pro-Nintendo video Yahtzee has posted in a long while.
I feel bamboozled. All these PlayStation fans kept saying "this shows PlayStation can make games with wonder like Nintendo!" Only for Yahtzee to reveal that it basically IS a Nintendo game.
i think it was more just giving credit where it's due. Nintendo *does* have a varied roster and Smash *does* sell like hot cakes, it's just as a corporate entity Nintendo sucks the life out of everything around it.

When ZP was around I'd always be waiting the day of, but now always seem to just notice it on the day n go "Oh ya, today is Fully Ramblamatic" 🤣
0:58 *”I needed to go to the toilet, so I went to one that I knew would be open at 3 in the morning. Upon my arrival I met two men, Carlos and Eduardo, who invited me into their cubicle to talk to them about government policy. Unfortunately, i slipped on the wet floor and soon became sandwiched between the two men in a position that the arresting officer informed me, is known as a spitroast”.*
Oh let's not pretend Nintendo isn't also an evil megacorp.
Shut up, Nintendo cultists. I don't care what your defenses are.
Thanks! Now I have an option on this piece of media
So this game is the console equivalent of that episode of Archer where the sad old Japanese soldier lost in the jungle for 60 years doesn't know the war has been over for that long.
That was a real thing that happened
2:50 Yahtzee as Mr. Belch was not something i was ready for today 😂
legacy of kain scratched out in the middle of the spreadsheet. oh right animating and editing takes time.
whoa, is gitaroo man actually in astro bot?
Astro Bot LOOKS like it's a ton of fun to play, its bright and colourful and I really WANT to play it, but its also $80 and in this day and age, I struggle to be able to afford more than a couple games a year while maintaining some kind of financial stability and responsibility. To that end, I'm really grateful to Ben for telling me it actually may be as fun as it looks, so I'll probably actually buy it at some point
The only time i wish i have ps5....ONLY TIME.
Prediction: Yahtzee will use the word "masturbatory" in this video.
Edit: Woohoo! Nailed it! Very first line of the criticism section too.
I mean, he could've gone with onanistic if he were feeling more pretentious.
OK the inFAMOUS joke at the end got me in the feels...
4:35 Legacy of Kain, huh?
*Boy that aged like strawberries*
Croc (1:12) is getting a remaster too!
I'll reserve judgement until it's actually been released, thank you very much.
I adore Yahtzee's ability to consistently come up with wild ass metaphors
Yahtzee really knows how to dig into the heart of a game! I love how he points out the little details that make ASTRO BOT so special. It feels like a love letter to gaming history. 🎮💕 Plus, I would totally play a whole game of just those cute little robots vibing around! 😄
game looks great but it makes me sneer at the "hey look at all these characters, do YOU remember them?"
why yes sony, now stop giving horizon zero dawn and the last of us all the attention for like the 8th time and bring back some more of those old characters
"It's like Super Mario Galaxy" is not the insult a lot of people seem to think it is lol
I like Yahtzee's content on Second Wind better because he isn't beholden to the gimmick of speedrunning his video essay. I used to watch his content from the old channel at 80% speed.
Kind of cool that Yahtzee is still batting for Infamous after all these years, which just further proves that Sony is sitting on a mountain of IPs it does nothing with
