  • This video is an overview of how to hook-up a U-Haul Trailer (ones that are equipped with brakes) to your vehicle. This is just an overview, however. If you are going to do it yourself, go to uhaul.com and download the users instructions first before attempting this procedure on your own. Thanks for checking it out!

    I just got done renting and using the 6X12 enclosed trailer and you have to be kidding it had NO tongue jack. I am fortunate that I have some jacks of my own I could use but the weight of this trailer is too much for most to lift by themselves when returning a trailer to an unattended site. Please put a jack on this thing.

    Always connect the breakaway chain to a location on the frame. Not the same location you use for the 2 safety chains! And it's always a good idea to cross the safety chains so if the trailer did come off the ball it has a chance of it falling down and being supported by the crossed safety chains.

    this guy must not like to turn with his trailers. there's a difference between dragging your chains and having ENOUGH slack to be able to make sharp turns.

  • @Leotheconstructionguy

    @pureoffroad in case it falls off the safety chains would keep it close to the vehicle so no one gets hurt

    @happy4579 had a similar problem from them before too. All the wiring did something it wasn't supposed to do, and the people working there only knew how to unplug the wiring, then replug it back in, saying "does it work now?".

    nice having a jack. Roxanne in customer service just told me that trailers don't come with jacks. I rented a 6 x 12 cargo today and will never use uhaul again. Hurt my back heaving that bloody thing up, ridiculous that it has no jack, not road worthy in my opinion just for that never mind having foot of snow on it. Maybe some day a customer having to stand on the fender to clear snow will fall and die or be paralyzed, I was lucky today. What is the point of a reservation if paper work is not ready, and trailer is froze to the ground covered in snow, then they charged me double for being 15 min early even though it took me an hour to hook the @#$% thing up. Jason at Uhaul wanted to argue with me about having snow on top being road worthy. I would like to disconnect the trailer and use my vehicle while its being unloaded, no way that even 4 men could lift that thing, that is another lawsuit waiting to happen. Very low bar for customer service and they do not even meet that low standard.

      I have never heard of a trailer without a jack. They must've had no jack installed on said trailer.

    dude, you could safely move a trailer home with that. My uncle relocated his trailer 3 miles away with an 86 f150. No problems besides a messed up bumper, and idk why he used the bumper

    We rented a uhaul for a 1 way trip, to be dropped off at a location 30 miles north of final destination . We arrived at the return location an hour before we were required only to find out they no longer handled uhaul. We had to take the trailer another 1.5 hours north to the next closest uhaul dealer. Uhaul scheduled a drop off to a location who never even handled their products any longer. We arrived at the second location at 2pm only to find an unattended lot with a phone number on the fence, no humans around. 4 hour round trip to return a trailer? Get it together uhaul

  • @pureoffroad

    wow that hitch looks dangerous and prone to coming off if that square loosens off. in the uk the trailers we use have an auto locking hitch so once the ball goes into the hitch it snaps down and won't come off unless you hold a lever and lift the handle. also we don't use chains they have a small sort of winch cable on that attachs to the tow car chassis and if the trailer comes off it pulls the cable and jams on the brakes on the trailer.

      pureoffroad newer lightweight trailers like boat trailers here have the cables. Most heavy duty trailers I have noticed still use heavy duty chains. U-haul is the only trailer supplier in the states that I have seen that use the twist thing to secure the ball. I honestly don't trust it and will check it every stop and tighten it more when I use a u-haul.

      I use Uhaul trailers all of the time. There are sharp lines on the bottom of the “square” that line up and lock into grooves on the top portion of the ball cover so as to prevent the “square” from rotating.

  • @brettduffy1992

    Wouldn't The surge breaking prevent you from backing up because the brakes would press on

    • @stuartshoen5096
      @stuartshoen5096 2 роки тому +2

      No. It does not freely articulate forward and back. It has tension on it from a spring that keeps casual reverse motion from engaging the brakes. Of course, at a point this design feature can be defeated, but speaking in practical terms, it’s proven to work very well for most regular driving situations.

    Uhaul will charge me $250 to disconnect the trailer for roadside assistance and then another $250 to reconnect and they can't say when they will arrive. :( So I'm here now, trying to see how to disconnect by myself. My 6'x12' doesn't even have a jack or wheel chalks so, that's a lot of problems.

    If you have to buy all those connectors for what could be a single rental, this makes for an expensive trailer rental. U-Haul should rent out these items as part of the package..

    • @stuartshoen5096
      @stuartshoen5096 Рік тому

      I definitely see what you're saying, but many vehicles don't need the connectors. So it's hard make them inclusive of the price/process without creating unnecessary costs some folks. The connector will last decades - I still use ones that I first got in high school (a long time ago) - and if you need to tow something once, then often times you need to tow twice. Not always of course, but the connector is not a bad thing to have as it works on more than just U-Haul trailers. As for an expensive trailer rental, we're sensitive to costs and go to great length to keep them low. I am not aware of a cargo or vehicle transport solution that is comparable in capability, availability/convenience, or price as a U-Haul trailer. That said, we know that the more we can lower customer costs, the more customers we will have. And we want more customers! Thanks for your comment; we hear your feedback and we will endeavor to be worthy of your business.

    NEVER TWIST A CHAIN! also, if there isnt enough slack in the saftey chain, and you make a tight turn SNAP it goes. and my 7.5x16' flat bed is so much easier to hook up, and its easy as hell to hook up a trailer by your self... i do all the time. on the first try too.

    ITS FUNNY HE IS HITCHING AN AUTO TRANSPORT TO A fORD fLEX. i dont't think the flex meets their parameters for towing one.

    • @supersoccrstar
      @supersoccrstar 5 років тому

      Course it does! Flex tows up to 4500 pounds IF you get the class 3 tow package from factory. If you install it after the fact then rated for only 2000 pounds. I rented the 6x12 trailer 3 days ago. Couldn't tell it was on during acceleration n I have the flex. Towed the 6x12 like a champ.
