    As a Native, I never thought American Indian history would be put into Star Trek again than the was portrayed in Original Star Trek with Captain Kirk with headbands. Our history is richer than that and TNG displayed that.

    The Native Americans were trying to protect something which they believed in. If Star Trek were real, I would've done what Wesley did and shed the uniform. While I'm not a fighter by nature, I would've made one big exception to defend this group when some of them aligned with the Maquis.

      Here in 2022. Starfleet probably did have (or will have, we're still in the past now, haha) more native Americans, if that's what you mean, in this context. Commander Chakotay was considered native American, even if he was from a fictional indigenous tribe on a fictional television show. The actor Robert Beltran is Mexican-American, but people forget that Mexicans, for the most part, are first & foremost inherently native American.

      @@iwillrateyou9375 ... They probably wanted to incorporate the group we know as native American as a whole, so that in effect, the story encompasses all of them in general, not just one individual tribe. It's like how we all lump white people together, or blacks or Asians, yet they are all from different nations, locations & bloodlines. A Norwegian is different from Armenian, but both white/Europe. Chinese is totally different from Indian, but all Asian. Namibian different from Somali, etc. People also sometimes forget that native Americans are all tribes in America, from Eskimo all the way down to the Yahgans, not just those in North America or just U.S.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical 3 роки тому +9

      @@Revan498 Well, remember that Insurrection happened after this.
      One could argue that he realized he was wrong in this episode, so that when Insurrection happened, he opposed his former self's actions and saw that they were wrong. A person learning from their mistakes and switching to "the good side" is something to praise, not condemn.
      What would be hypocrisy is if Insurrection happened FIRST and then he went to "the bad side" when it was convenient. But as that didn't happen, it's not hypocrisy, it's growth/evolution, I think.

In this TNG episode he feels he needs to maintain Starfleet policy of brown-nosing the Cardassians and essentially screwed the Native American Federation citizens for a "goddamn percentage", but in Insurrection he decides to side with the Ba'ku just because they appear to be white people :P
      I truly do not understand why a lot of fans think he's the "best Captain". Kirk, Sisko, even Janeway would have sided with the Natives and told the Cardassians to go fuck themselves.

    The creators of the Star Trek universe really wrote themselves into a corner with the whole Maquis thing. It produced some interesting episodes, but to finish that thread they would’ve had to have taken a side. Thank god they simply got wiped out by the Dominion in DS9.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical 3 роки тому +4

      That was the worst ending possible.
      The whole storyline of the Maquis was that it was morally gray and it was unclear who were really the "good guys", and the writers seemed to be intending it as the Federation were certainly NOT in the right, as they addressed this a number of times, with even Starfleet higher ups saying things like "It's easy to be a saint in Paradise (Earth)", "they're not saints, they're just people", and the many saying "the price of peace (with the Cardassians) was too high". Star Trek: Insurrection even outright opposes the forced relocation idea - "How many does it take, Admiral...BEFORE it becomes wrong?" -Picard
      We as the viewers were robbed of a resolution to the philosophical question in the end, and there's really no good reason for it, especially since it's likely Maquis did survive the war (besides just the ones on Voyager), considering their support from the Klingons and even Federation.

    This episode was the first in a succession of trans-series episodes which culminated in the Voyager series premiere. They include:
    TNG: "Journey's End" (though the Maquis name isn't said here)
    DS9: "The Maquis (Parts 1&2)"
    TNG: "Preemptive Strike"
    DS9: "Tribunal"
    DS9: "Defiant"
    VOY: "Caretaker" (followed by the Maquis' inherent inclusion in the Voyager crew)
    After Voyager started, the Maquis were mentioned sporadically on DS9, but their thread on that series was tragically scrapped in Season 5.

It may stain Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic vision even though he wanted Star Trek through its science fiction to address real issues. But at least some episodes like this one can have happy endings to help make us all truly wiser.

      Also, in this episode Picard wants to force resettlement on the Indians because if they aren't resettled it could start an INTERGALACTIC WAR with the Cardassians in which billions of people died. He was basically trying to prevent the events of DS9. In the movie, the stakes were different. The evil admiral wanted to resettle them because he wanted to use their planet for its healing properties. I'm sure Picard, 1) thought the price was too high for the Ba'Ku but not too high for the Indians and, 2) was super concerned about the prime directive, which only applies to the Ba'Ku. ~ I'm not saying Picard's judgments are right, necessarily, but they are two different situations, not the same situation.

      And the real messed up thing is we really don't need it. It will not create that many jobs and fuel prices are already low due to a record supply of oil on the market.

      @@tomv5988 Isn't the point to stop using trains for the stuff, which are actually an even worse/more dangerous way to move it? Some of the biggest money interests OPPOSING the pipeline are those of the owners/companies that run those trains/contracts. You also have a lot of moneyed groups opposing the pipeline because then they can move it to Canada's west coast and send it to China for processing and selling/profits. And it should be noted China has less environmental regulation than the US, meaning their refineries are dirtier, so processing/refining the oil there will lead to greater carbon emissions and greater impact on climate. And it's not JUST China that would like that instead of the Dakota pipeline. Preventing the pipeline might actually cause more environmental damage short and long-term...and as we know, people profit off of that as well.
      This isn't to say the grassroots protestors are wrong, but just that the whole thing is more complex - things area ALWAYS more complex - than they might first seem.

      It could be another branch of the family. Like the Habsburgs and Bourbons, they could be spread out over different parts of Europe.

      Bordeaux is a region that borders with Spain. Picards acester was Spanish and his wife was French. In Latin America you have 2 last names. Your 1st last name from your father and your secondary last name is from your mother. If you're female and get married you drop your mother's last name and your husband's becomes the primary.

      Many Native Americans use Indian as well. It seems to be more popular with actual Native Americans than "Native American" is. Though I think most prefer their own tribal name (Cherokee, Sioux, etc), it really does depend on the individuals.
      Also: This was the early 90s. They used a word viewers at the time would recognize/understand.

    I know they wouldn't have done it because of their Christian faith, but this episode would have made a lot more sense if it was an Amish community instead of Native Americans.
