Premier Guitar's Chris Kies is on location in Cedar Rapids, IA, where he catches up with Papa Roach's Jerry Horton and Tobin Esperance. The guys discuss about condensing their rigs from arena-ready juggernaut stacks to carry-on-approved size. Horton talks about collaborating with Schecter on his signature Solo 6, and Tobin explains why picks aren't his thing.

He is tuned to C! 13's feel like thick 10's at that tuning. SRV tuned to Eflat, which is where i usually am, i use 56, 38, 26, 17, 13, 10. Which gives good SRV vibe on the bottom, shred on top. Rock! Tuned to C, i would use a 60 on the low. Maximum girth! Haha

Papa Roach has been making awesome music for a long time. Go them.
Love gear tours of awesome bands :-D
Crazy to see how many pro artists are using Fractals (or digital processors in general). Obviously the convenience factor (small, and diverse) is key.

Honestly, I really like them telling how they condensed their rig down to make it easier to transport. We all want the best tone, but sometimes you gotta make sacrifices and it was cool to see that side of the equation for once instead of a ludicrous tone monster that barely sounds better than a pared rig

Dream Theater tour exactly like Papa Roach. Tell me in what level they sound low fi? Is unnoticiable. Digital even sounds better because of the simplicity to mix the band without micking cabs.

    • @astorgaluthier

He is talking about the precision of the tuning. Lockers tend to be less accurate. In a quarter of turn the string lifts 2 o 3 notes. Thats what he meant.

the only reason they use axe fx is they are a lot lighter and more reliable than actual heads and bunch of separate fx units. weight is a big deal when you're touring, especially if you're going overseas. in truth, unless you're doing extreme metal, the axe fx doesn't come close to the sound and feel of the real deal. it if did, everybody would use them.

wow the guy had 2 identical guitars made and they sound different. Wasnt expecting that, but it sort of makes sense, not every piece of wood is the same so even if its the same type it might be different in the way it grew to affect tone? I guess you cant predict the tone of a guitar just by specs, although i thought you could get close, but thats all good, you should be playing the guitar to test the tone before you buy. But he didnt really have a chance when they were making a guitar for him, something anomalous must of happened, or maybe Schecter just has consistencey problems when they make their guitars if there even is such a thing in guitar making? Mysterious.

Anyway I´m remembering that Billy Sheehan always uses the same bass and he doesn´t speak too much about his bass either, he keeps it simple too.

  • @LiberTBo

It remains exceptionally difficult to discuss tone and the dynamics of amplifiers and equipment used to boost the signals and sonic signals used to create a unique sound. It is correct to comment that less is more, after a band comes to the realization that each and ever piece of equipment costs a ton of money to tour with it all. Once a manager openly discusses what a Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) is to the band members, and how it works, usually everyone will jump on board, less equipment = more money in most cases.
