I'll never understand why flat rides don't get much love when they are a thousand times more fascinating to watch than a coaster! These really are mesmerising... would have loved to see that Vortex outside the cathedral @ 3:55 running at night, the lights would cast all kinds of interesting patterns on the building.
Hopefully this makes a comeback because it ticks all the boxes for an entertaining flat ride. Now I'm off to read the accident report & get righteously indignant about how those operators gave this ride & their industry a black mark! Will be very interested to see your video on the incident.
Edit: I’m only on page 3 of the report & my blood pressure is already rising! This whole thing is sketchy-as-hell… you know when a ride’s ownership & insurance is unnecessarily convoluted there is definitely something dodgy going on. But I am impressed by Nth Carolina’s ride inspection set up & the robustness of the Vortex ride itself.

Just curious, from this video it sounds like you know which traveling carnival groups are trustworthy VS which ones are shady, would you be down to do a mini video series on that sometime? Do you have any information on where The Mighty Thomas Carnival would rank in that paradigm by any chance?

I was only able to take two rides on this while it was at the Ohio State Fair. it was certainly a unique looking, and feeling, ride

The report shows the serious shenanigans it took to run the ride with all the safely circuits bypassed. I hope Josh was prosecuted criminally for this mess he caused to this cool ride!

Looks like both a revolving "salad bowl" & palm tree. Beautiful ride! Yes! Always operate the ride as the manufacturer INTENDED!

This one is high on my 'bucket list' set; I've never seen one up close, and may never do so, but if I should ever come across one I'd be on it quickly.
I definitely look forward to seeing the WRH video to come. It kinda makes me angry that some two-bit shyster get this ride over a more established and trustworthy entity.

I rode the inward facing seat Vortex when it was still in France, in a small fair close to my home (Foire Saint Martin). It's a fun and smooth ride, I liked it. I don't remember much centrifugal g-forces from the rotations, it's just about being upside down and spinning around.
I was sad to see its state in the US. For the incident of course, but even before. See the facade and how they get rid of many details at its top... It looked sad.
I didn't know about the original paint you see at 1:11. It looked great! Better than the yellow.

OMG I've actually ridden this one in Belgium! It was during the "Paasfoor Kortrijk" (2 week fair during the Easter holiday in the city Kortrijk) in, I believe it was, 2008.
I remember this ride being placed in a side street away from the most popular market squares where most of the other flat rides were set up, so me and my friend were the only one on that ride that cycle and general attendance was very low. I've always tried to find this ride again the following years but never did.
I never knew the official name but remember calling it "De paddestoel" (mushroom in English) because the inward facing seats looked like a mushroom when it was upside down, to the 14-year old me.
I've been waiting and hoping that this ride would feature on this series.

Hey I have a super obscure ride recommendation it’s called the Scenic spiral top rail way it was at Luna Park in Coney Island in the 20s through 30s.

Here's my current wishlist for future FROTW videos (unchanged from last week):
Matterhorn / Flying Bobs & Trabant / Hully Gully - these were mentioned in a previous video, and I look forward to seeing them.
    .
    Rainbow / 1001 Nacht
    Paratrooper
    Orbiter
    Miami
    .
    [old-school and/or unique]
'Cuddle-Up' (basically an 'n'th-degree teacup ride) ... I'll never forget the in-the-dark "Iceberg" at Dorney Park
Boomerang ... I remember seeing this at Casino Pier a LONG time ago, when I was too young for such things
'Sidewheeler' (or maybe 'Sidewinder') ... looking a bit like the inner workings of a watch, this one-of-a-kind SFGA installation was something to see

I had no idea this ride debuted at here in the U.S. at my hometown fair! I did get a chance to ride it twice in 2013. It was very intense with its spinning and inversion filled cycle, especially because it took a while for the ride to fully invert you. There was also the smoke machine and lighting package that really made it differ from everything else on the midway. Hopefully it will return to dazzle thrill seekers again one day.

At the local fair, there is a ride not unlike this one called Viper. The arms that hold the passengers don't move though, but the center part looks kind of similar.

I did get to the outside facing vortex. It was deffenatly better than its brother. Getting puched in the safetybar was awesome. I also did get 1 privet ride with the opperator fully focesed on me. He let me spin maximaal upsidedowns for 1 minute until I gave tge sign I didnt hold it much langer. He realy played with the machine and gave me an realy axtreem an forcefull ride. That was so friking awesome. That day alone I want 4 times on it, and later that year 2 times on a other fair. Realy miss the machine. With the kmg experince it was a very different extreem as normal. Loved every second of that ride

I was at the North Carolina State Fair the day after the incident and it was quite eerie. I've enjoyed flat rides growing up and it turned me off from them. I understand that flat rides are generally safe and it usually takes a lot of human error and irresponsibility to cause accidents.

I only rode the outward-seater version. I really enjoyed it under its German ownership. good forceful ride, great fun. Under Dutch ownership, it all seemed different. It ran slower, meaning more uncomfortable hang time, and gave very long rides, longer than was enjoyable. Plus, the seats and restraints were terrible, especially the secondary restraint, which was metal bar that locked over the top of the entire row, and made me feel quite claustrophobic while riding. I'm glad I rode it, but it's not one I'll really miss!

what a fun looking ride. interesting they had to "edit" the scenery. there's a B-24 Liberator war plane that's in the Air Force Museum called Strawberry B!t@h. they had to paint some lingerie on the nose art because originally the girl was completely naked and I guess they couldn't have that in a museum. Nose art got to be pretty raunchy during WW2 but I digress.
