    The high 70 cm output is a plus for those of us who use an HT hooked up to a mag mount antenna as a mobile unit. I’ll have to check this radio out!

    Intersting, I have the Retevis RT 82 and have not tried another antenna it yet, I heard the same thing and need to pick up an aftermarket one, which one do you suggest? My after market antenna for my yeasu VX8 fits, but I was not sure it would work since I heard these radios were picky about aftermarket antennas.

      Depends on if you want range or not; the two antennas I use the most are the Diamond RH3 and the Signal Stick. Thanks for watching!

    Hi there, you probably know by now, but in the video, you mentioned that you were unsure of what a dry vs wet dummy load was. From the old big antenna days where you were using some serious wattage, the dummy had to be able to dissipate the heat. A wet dummy load had its elements submerged in oil to prevent fire, burnout of a transmitter, etc.73

      Yep, figured that part out but thanks for the info Arthur 👍

    Good tests! Makes me want to test all of my HT's, just to see how they are performing, probably something we should be doing anyway.

      Thanks Ron, since getting the dummy load I’ve been testing everything!

      @@TheSmokinApe lol! I've got a 50ohm dummy load, bought it to practice cw, so I could hear the relays clicking, etc. I've got the same meter, different brand name, but I bet it's made in the same plant. Mine is a Micronta 19-320

    • @TheSmokinApe

      Yeah, I have seen the meter under a few different brand names. I like the meter it seems to work reasonably well but I would also like a digital one!

    Your power readings will be on the high side due to RF getting back into the meter, caused by the antenna being physically too close to the meter. Good idea to test them out though. You could buid yourself a field strength meter and do it that way.

    Sorry I'm late tot the party. So using a external mobile antenna rated for higher power should work?

    Any SWR meter will show swr 1:1 on 50 Ohm dummy load. To verify if your meter is not fooling you, you should use 100 Ohm dummy load. Further from swr 2:0, bigger crap your meter is. Since we do not know it's quality, all measurements taken are not reliable.

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  5 років тому

      Agreed. I did this test to address comments that the radio expected a different impedance that 50 Ohms which would have yielded different results. Thanks for the comment.

    So does that mean that if i use a after market antenna that is rated for like 25W or higher i should be ok on high output?

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  5 років тому

      I don’t think I would do that, I’d be concerned that I was overdriving the radio.

      Don't pump out that much power while holding that radio ear your skull! Hook an external antenna and shoulder mic, and go for the high power xmit

    I recently purchased this radio and am experiencing issues with receive, the radio's squelch is just too high even the the lowest setting. When it is sitting next to a Yeasu vx-6r and I am getting full receive on the Yeasu this thing will not crack open. If I manually open the squelch up in the monitor function I can hear the signal without issue. Have you or anyone else experienced this?

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  4 роки тому

      I have not experienced this issue but there have been similar reports, have you reached out to Ailunce Customer Support?

    • @joeclark4830
      @joeclark4830 4 роки тому

      TheSmokinApe I have, there is a language barrier and it was suggested that I “move the walkie talkies closer together”. I did set the squelch to 0 then back to 1 and it seems to be a little better. Unfortunately what I would consider to be a reasonable signal strength is too low of one for the squelch in it’s current configuration.
