Bushcraft Treehouse 22: Winter Camping Canada - Building Beds around the Camp Fire

  • Matt and Reuben head out the the bushcraft treehouse for some winter camping fun. They build beds around the fire to stay warm and cook up some steak and potatoes! It was pretty cold in this one, and the trip took an unfortunate turn at the end.

Son of a Bear Bushcraft/// I don't know what I'd do finding a gem like their tree house! Well I'm thinking, perhaps I'd sew them some curtains, and leave them some canned food, for using it as an over night shelter. Well maybe I'd plant some tulip bulbs for the spring, and write a Zen poem, but then that's just me chasing the most illusive dream of all. LOL!! Happy holidays dude!

TA Outdoors, hi there good to see you here! Never miss your videos, love your dad too. Hey let me share something gross with you and the rest of the troops. In the primitive times, natives use to take their sick adults to the river, no they didn't drown them! lol. They had a tool, a wooden stick which was polished smooth, don't remember in my research what type of wood it was. However they dug up the smoothest cleanest clay from the river bed, dip the stick in the wet clay and shove it up the sick person's_____, ouch! must have hurt to a degree. All the bacteria would flush out into the water, instant cure for intestinal tract bacterial and parasitical infestation. Must have been a bloody relief!!! I would use that method to survive...clay is the salt of the earth. LOL! Surrey Crossing Vancouver BC

Happy Holidays, Heroes! Hope Matt and Reuben are well-recovered and that all is well and good with Bow! It DOES occur to fans that the 'LIFE' of a UA-cam group is not an easy one and that you each are experiencing changes in your life and...I cannot finish my 'dire' thought! You guys already have a bunch of inspirational work for viewers to watch and to learn from...and we are checking in regularly to stay out in the woods with you all.

That same situation happened to me years ago, I had a bad headache and my stomach was upset. We were camping on an island that we had paddled our canoes to. It was like -10 f that night with the humidity. In the middle of the night I had diarrhea bad and every time I would get out of the tent to use the bathroom, by the time I would get to where it was off trail so I could go I was so cold my body was tense and I couldn't go. Then I would hike back to the tent and get in my sleeping bag, get warm and then the urge to go would come back. This went on for about five or six hours until the next morning and it was miserable! 😂 One of the weirdest things I've ever experienced.

One doesn't ordinarily associate funky disco music with freezing cold canadian winters. But since these are young trendy creatives with a survival skillset that would put many to shame , I'm going to have to say it works! And furthermore- as much as it's not cool to admit it but I like the music. In THIS CONTEXT!

This is a good video to revisit, right up to the point where illness strikes. Given the weather, beds around the fire made sense. You had the gear to carry it off and the walls of the enclosure would help with wind.

WOW: cold weather and health issues! Bummer. Great to see the good times while they lasted. I would have opted for a long fire instead of the fire pit under those conditions...and a tarp to hold in a bit of the heat would have helped. Still, nothing works when you are sick and headachey and cold. The beds were a new touch. I was with Matt when he first said: 'this is really uncomfortable!" It looked that way. With the hot rocks cemented into the fine fire pit, they weren't available for tucking under the beds to help with the heating. Lots of food for discussion and for pondering in this video.

Matt reported that his bag kept him cozy. Reuben's bag wasn't up to the low temperatures. Our two Heroes really challenged themselves by just going with the open elevated bed concept...and just a fire pit fire on a sub-freezing outing. 'Test and Learn."

The snow just proved me right in my comment back on the video when you made your tall wall (aka lean-to). That wall is TOO vertical and now all that snow is right where it shouldn't be. You either need to lower the cross rod so the wall leans more into the camp or build a lower surrounding wall so the bottom of your current wall becomes the lower end of a "roof". Right now your wall is NOT leaning enough.

You know I have had an idea about heat reflection for some time now. Everyone that makes a similar video to yours are always using these Mylar, tissue paper thin, space blankets and put them against the roof of a lean-to to reflect the heat back down on them on their bushcraft bed. But because they are so thin, one wrong slip and and you're out $5-$15 bucks. My idea is simple. Go to the dollar store and get numerous rolls of the 18 inch wide rolls of aluminum foil, unroll the edge, staple it to one side of the roof of your lean-to and then gently unroll it and staple periodically across to keep it to the roof and of course when you get to the other end of the roof, cut the foil, don't use the cutter teeth on the box, and then staple that end. Just repeat that over an over again until you get to the bottom of the roof.
Aluminum foil rolls are cheaper than space blankets and the foil is more durable. And even if it rips you can just staple the ripped part back up or staple a patch in. The foil will reflect heat just as well if not better than the Mylar.

Just a suggestions when you guys go back to camp. Add an adjustable roof over your new sleeping area so that way if you use the area snow doesnt just come in while your sleeping, like a tarp or something since you made it against the wall.

For tummy ache n gas: Activated charcoal tablets..plus they can..be used to ease the pain of wasp and hornet sting..plus whiten ur teeth..deep clean ur skin and add volume to ur hair..
Just don't take activated charcoal if ur pregnant (no pun intended) or have kidney or liver conditions, it is known that AC (Activated Charcoal) can pull out active ingredients from other medication making them ineffective so medically advise not to take it with other medication.
Doctors who see the usefulness of activated charcoal recommend using it on occasion only, on as needed basis.

Cool I'm an Edmontonian too. Joe Robinet is my kids favourite bush rafter on this platform. He will love to know an Edmontonian is doing this too

Make a sled for the dog to pull. To haul logs and materials.

You should make some sort of bushcraft heater in the tree house so you don’t need a sleeping bag in the winter you would just need a blanket

Hey you guys should build a trail for pulling around wood

Wow, that's not fun, so was it food poisoning or a stomach bug? Strange you both came down with it at the same time. Maybe your dog also had it and that is why he was shivering. Your camp looks very comfortable. I Enjoy watching

The U.S is a bit less north then Canada, we don't go through -50 temps normally on the main land, so we don't need very heavy winter equipment. So we can make our solders hold less stuff, Alaska is a different story.

There was a perfectly good axe, why didn't you use that to split the wood? Would have gone faster and easier

Sometimes when I watch videos on subjects I like, ideas come to me on practical stuff. I have an idea for a dog camp bed (waterproof & insulated against the cold ground). Just cut 2 squares of sturdy plastic tarping, dependant on a dogs size. For a big dog, 40" square. Sew 3 sides with a sort of long standard stitch length. DONT TURN INSIDE OUT. leave flanges edges exposed because you'll want to lightly fill with ever green boughs. The branches would rip the stitches if you turned them to the inside. Will roll up to pack out real easy for traveling. Will still need a blanket on it though. SORRY you got so sick ! Sounded like a food reaction. 😬

That’s a good idea. It’s funny though. Manny didn’t even sleep near us or the fire. Just in the snow under the log wall.

You can try closing off the steps so Manny can't see through them and place some bacon bits on each one to entice her up. Should concur her fear, I've seen it done before. Cheers!

Since you have snow, pile snow up, and make it like an igloo. Fashion Points if you add the following.
Windows, Rooms, Bed, and a place for the doggo.
