    I like the fact that you showed the trial and error of making this table. You did a great job of demonstrating that while it is a "simple" project, its not necessarily "easy" and people shouldnt get discouraged by not getting it right the first time. My first workbench was a real learning experience, but now i can make a bench you could drop an engine on :) (tho i admit, i used a drill and 2x4's rather than raw wood...which does make it a lot simpler hehe)

    you can make your own wood filler with glue and sawdust, (or just buy some) and maybe with a plane and sandpaper could make some really nice smooth table tops.
    bringing a few rasps and files along might also make it easier to shape some of your furniture. Probably worth lugging some woodworking hand tools up there in general.

    I like the work you did on the table top; that looks quite functional. The structural problem is that you have all parallel braces; from the side, it is just parallelograms and subject to end-to-end wobble and collapse. You need a couple of diagonal braces to make it much more stable.

    "How did other people do this ?" Much tighter joints and better lashings.
    Paracord is good, but I suspect kind of expensive. Buy a large spool (200-300M) of BTAIDED nylon cord (about 2-3mm) in the Sporting Goods section of eBay. It will take about 6-8 times as much cord. The proper starting/finishing knot is a clove hitch, Learn the difference between wrapping and frapping.

    For next time, think about triangles when you are trying to stabilise wonky frames. The reason the end "X's" were so stable is because they made triangles. you needed to make another triangle from the centre of the table to the joint of the "X" and but those two bits at the centre against each other.

    • @WalkWild
      @WalkWild 7 років тому

      +Brian Andrews yes indeed! Thanks for the tip!

  • @craigkirby9202
    @craigkirby9202 7 років тому

    Love your work!!! All you need is an X like your legs, but going the other way... ie running the length from short end to short end. A straight beam like the one between your X legs doesn't need to change length when you move it from side to side so offers no compression or tension... Just wobble. An X would have to distort and change in a lot of ways giving as much strength as you X legs. I think :) But how should I know.... I'm a potter

    Guys, a table of the sort you were making is essentially the same as a bridge. First chance you get, LOOK at a bridge. Your table will take a lot of weight that is being applied at a 90 degree angle to the table top (the road surface of your bridge). However, unlike a bridge you don't have mother earth at either end preventing it from collapsing from pressure to the edge of and along the length of the table. As it stands, the table could be collapsed with one finger pushed against the table top, along its length. The solution is not more supports that run parallel to the surface of the table (bridge). You only need one of those (at the crossing points of the legs). That was the first brace you installed. What you need is two shorter pieces that run from the underside of the table top ends, dropping (at approximately a 45 degree angle), to meet at the top of your first brace. It's all about vectors, force applied at angles. Once you see that, it's easy-peasy. If you diagram the table and ask how it responds to force coming from all three directions, it solves itself.

    • @WalkWild
      @WalkWild 6 років тому +1

    Construction work in the woods ... :D To stabilize a square or rectangular frame so that the frame cannot move to one or another side looking like a parallelogram, you have to connect two diagonal corners with a bar. Or more strengthy each pair of diagonal corners with a bar! Which you put crosswise. The frame then looks like confederate "stars and bars"! And when you put those inner diagonal bars inside the frame in the same level as the outer bars, you even do not need nails etc. to fix them! After changing to newest first I just see that the honorable Bruce Dobson gave the same advice 6 hours earlier! Sorry! :D

    When you were cutting off the bark with the axe I was thinking why you didn't use a draw knife since it would be much quicker, and looks like you thought of it after doing the first log.

    Love the videos. I could go without the "Subscribe for more content" popup every two minutes though, especially on a longer video like this. There is simply no need for it. Anyone who takes the time to watch the whole video is already subscribed. Cheers

      I agree withWestin. All the top channels are avoiding this. They have a mention either at the begining either the end and that's it. Otherwise it makes you look to "commercial" and too much pushing for it. Just one mention and no more. The quality content and the friendliness of the people on camera does it.

    add diagonal bracing to prevent shear, the legs should support the frame instead of just the two end planks.

    Love your videos. This one had me grinning. Your table needs gussets, cross members, a triangle of some sort. Why did you make an X with the legs rather than coming straight down from the corners? Because the X stabilizes the table. The same principles applies for both directions. "That's how other people do it." :) I hope this helps.

    You guys seriously need to look into a shave horse. Sorry if I'm a bit late to the party, but a shave horse would make such a big difference to your tinder making as well. Also, the design of a draw blade makes it almost impossible to cut yourself as long as you distance yourself more than an inch from your materials.

    • @backhomeprepper
      @backhomeprepper 7 років тому

      there are several videos on UA-cam that show how to make it. It's pretty simple. You remove the bark from the birch tree and scrape with your knife the orange layer underneath the bark off. it's the orange bits that you steep in boiled water to make a tea.

    Please except this as no contradiction, but as constructive criticism. I thoroughly enjoy your efforts at constructing a really nice camp. Your table is way over built. I’m not sure that I have the ability to explain in words what I’m trying to help you with, but I will give it a try. Two forty five angled cuts on a log the same size in diameter as the logs on your legs and attached with nails to the under part of your table and then attached with nails to the cross piece which have given you plenty of support and prevented any wiggle on your table. Ya. After reading this over eight is an awfully bad in wordy explanation. I have noticed that others have attempted the same thing that I am doing, but they actually know the English language. Perhaps you had better pay attention to them because I don’t not speak da Inglishes talk very gooded. I really do enjoy your videos. Please keep them up
