hi sophia! thank you for sharing your story :) i'm in my third year of medical school and thought it may be helpful to share some info with you. i hope this doesn't come across as preachy - i think it's important to empower our patients to understand what's going on with their own health and why things are done the way that they are.
for starters, i could definitely hear your frustration about the normal endoscopy results. an endoscopy would not have shown gallstones - it sounds like they were working you up for acid reflux (thus the pantoprazole). i'm not sure why they started you on advair as that's usually used for asthmatics or people with COPD - maybe you were describing some intermittent chest pain and difficulty breathing?
it sounded like your presentation was non-specific with your indigestion pains, and your age/presentation is not typical for gallstones which may be why it was not diagnosed sooner (the risk factors are commonly known as the 4 F's: female, fat (obesity), fertile (multiple pregnancies), forty). this is not to say that people without these risk factors can't get gallstones, but it may not have been at the top of your doctor's differential.
anyway, i'm so glad you're feeling better now after your cholecystectomy and again, thank you for sharing! hope this was helpful. much love

Radiology resident over here and I was about to say the same thing about the endoscopy vs. ultrasound (unless it was an echo-endoscopy). Although an abdominal ultrasound is a fairly cheap and fast exam so they might have thrown that in way earlier, especially if she was already followed by a gastroenterologist. But again, retrosternal pain is definitely not a typical symptom of impacted gallstones. Glad she’s doing better now, one way or another it’s always frustrating when something’s wrong but everyone tells you there’s nothing wrong.

I’ve been dealing with this pain for over a year. I had to go to the ER 3-4 months ago and the doctor confirmed that it was gallstones. Surgery is recommended and I’ve been soooo much better in regards to food choices. Even with better food choices, I get faint pains from time to time. I’d like to opt for surgery, but due to financial reasons (and crappy health insurance), it’s not in the cards for me right now. Maybe sometime in the new year.
So glad to see you feeling better girl. 💕

Thank you for sharing. Physical or mental struggle is something we feel we need to take care of ourselves. And if we feel we need to take care of it ourselves, it affects everybody around us, and sometimes it takes more struggle and more problems to finally realize we need help of some sort. I totally understand that you weren't patient to find out what was wrong with you. I can't eat dairy or wheat, and every time I get tested doctors always say everything is fine. I know its not, and I can't deal with the diagnosis at all rn. I just stay away from the whole testing thing and eat what makes me feel good.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I was at the ER this past Tuesday after having two other attacks. I am awaiting approval from insurance for my surgery. I'm 61years old. The pain I experienced was tremendous pressure at the lower sternum, back pain, and vomiting so violently that I would pee on myself with each heave. Being sick during Covid didn't even hinder my decision to go to the ER. I woke up with the pain at about8:30 a.m. during a camping trip. I was in the middle of the desert, the pain didn't subside so at 8:30 p.m. I went to the ER. They immediately did an EKG because of the location of the pain. They drew blood and I had a CatScan. From arrival until I was put in an examination room was9 hours.

I had to have my gallbladder removed a few years ago and my only regret was...why did I not take care of this health issue sooner!
The post-op pain I experienced after the operation was short-lived and nowhere near the pain I endured before the gallbladder was removed!

Thanks for sharing what I think is really a condition that needs to be researched more thoroughly. I too had very similar experiences with the attacks etc. Was immediately told by a specialist to take out my gallbladder since I had a gallstone the size of a golfball. I'm going onto 10 years and I absolutely regret not pursuing the route of medication first. Everyone is different but just to share I had massive weight gain, all the same gastro issues that everyone has warned you about, colitis, becoming lactose, and even residual buildup trying to form on the bile ducts that are essentially just floating in your body since the bladder is missing (it looked like a silver bullet). I had to go back in for another surgery to remove that since it was causing me similar types of pain. I would just say keep monitoring your health, the struggle never ends as I truly believe god gave you organs for a reason and if you change your physiology something else is compromised.

There is a cream to fade the scar. Last December I was diagnosed with stage 2 thyroid papillary cancer and had my thyroid removed. And the scar was a good lengthy from my left ear to the center of my throat. I’ve been using the cream Mederma that I bought from Walmart. My first scar is almost completely gone and can’t tell that I had surgery. I just had another surgery on my right side of my neck and it’s much bigger. I am currently still using the cream and I believe it will fade like the first scar. I hope this helps. You should try it out on your cute scars.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I'm about to have surgery in a few weeks and after seeing your video- am less scared and more excited for it- I have been dealing with indigestion pain my entire life as well and for the past couple of years- been needing at least one or two trips to the ER a year because of the pain- in 2020 I only went to the ER once because of the pandemic but I had four separate indigestion/stomach pains that lasted for the whole day- earlier this year I had two of those incidents but just as soon as I started recovering I had gallstone attack that lasted from that night until the next day- since this pain was new, I decided to go to the ER and they confirmed that I have gallstones- I was in the same boat as you were where I was not getting any definite answers and was confused an unsure about a lot- my dad was also against me getting surgery at first - but once I did more research and heard other people's stories including yours, I became sure this is what I wanted to do- I am hopeful that my health and relationship with food will become a lot better after this surgery :)

omgosh i had the same thing going on for years and never had it taken care of and finally in May 2012 i was soooo sick and called an ambulance the doc said good thing i came in cuz i was about to die ... so i had it out i knew i had stones for years and i had it done laproscopic too ... then in 2016 i had a SERIOUS hysterectomy ... now if you wanna see a scar this one is about 16" to remove a huge fibroid that was bigger than a babies head that was outside my uterus ... i feel your pain im so glad you are better now so many people get their gallbladders out .. they seem like a useless organ ! at the time of my gallbladder removal they did a ERCP procedure first .. to get the stones out of my bile ducts that were about to kill me ... they also did a 2nd surgery which was to repair a umbilical hernia the gallbladder wasnt so bad it was the hernia that was making me a mess ... those scars will disappear get that cream i forget the name it'll make them disappear my gall bladder scars are gone but the hysterectomy scar looks better ... i had an attack in August after my surgery there was another stone somehow that passed through the duct even though the gallbladder was gone .. so glad you are OK and feeling well :)

The first time I had a gallbladder attack was 6/2020 and it woke me up from my sleep and lasted a day and half. After that I didn’t feel again until after covid 4/2021. Ive had multiple gallbladder attacks that have lasted days. Tomorrow I’m finally having surgery to remove my gallbladder. Super nervous and scared but I’m hoping the best. Love that I came across your page during these times ❤️ thank you

I'm an aesthetic nurse and its very common for Asian skin types to take longer for the scar color to settle and fade, you can go to aesthetic clinic to get laser treatments to flatten and lighten the scar if you would like to expedite the process , if not it would just take a few years. I hope this helps. So brave Sophia!

Literally going through the same thing right now. Knowing something is wrong with me and my digestion but doctors dismissing me because I'm young and saying everything is fine with me when I just know it's not. In a test I had it showed I had gallstones but the doctor said it was nothing because I'm 21, they were gone in the next test I had but I just know that they were a product of whatever is going on with my digestive system. It hurts to have people say you're fine when you are in pain and wanting to know why so that you can put an end to it. Had family members ask me why I wasn't happy when the doctor told me my tests came back all fine and it's just so hard to explain that I'd rather have answers than false reassurances. You know when something is going on with you. Tired of going through so many tests and always getting nowhere.

I had my gallbladder removed in June (UK) and must say I had a pretty rough recovery - but nothing in comparison to the pain I was in when experiencing an attack. I haven’t had an attack since (fingers crossed) and I am so so unbelievably thankful 🙏🏼 I would spend sometimes days in bed just in absolute agony, constantly vomiting and I often think how did my body coped. We definitely don’t give our body’s enough credit. Whatever I ate was like a game of Russian roulette “is this going to trigger an attack?” was always the first thing on my mind taking a first bite of something. 5 months later and I have never felt better and you’re absolutely right, it totally makes you appreciate things and value your health 🙏🏼 What an amazing video to make Sophia and this will be SO helpful to those struggling/pre or post op, not just for people with gallbladder issues, just in general 👏🏼 So informative, refreshing and inspiring 🧡 You’re such a beautiful soul 😘

Up until I had my gallbladder removed (I was 13, I'm 29 now), no one really figured it out and I was in and out of the hospital for a few years. I guess it never occurred to them that someone so young would have gallstones. It's so frustrating to be told time and time again that there's nothing wrong with you. It wasn't until I had gone to the ER multiple times did they finally confirm that I had gallstones and I would need surgery.
What I found out eventually after years of going to gastroenterologists and eastern medicine specialists is that some bodies are more prone to producing stones. I had several 'attacks' in my late teens (many years after the surgery) and early 20s that felt similar to what I felt when I had stones. One time I had pancreatitis, but other times it was because I had a stomach virus (so digestive system was not working properly) or when I'm in really stressed situations (no sleep, bad eating habits, etc)
I would say, as someone who's now dealing with the aftermath for more than half her life, is to pay really close attention to your body and how it's feeling, and how it reacts to what you eat. It's not just acid reflux/heartburn, it's also how your food digests, is it digesting correctly, how long is taking, are you 'regular', etc, as I'm sure you're figuring out. The lack of gallbladder leads to a possible lack of absorption of vitamins because your body can't breakdown fatty foods, or fat soluble vitamins, as well anymore. I have to now deal with managing my body and making sure I'm taking the right supplements (vitamins, probiotics+prebiotics) because even if I'm eating the right foods, my body won't be able to absorb nutrients as well as it would have with the gallbladder.
Thanks for making people aware of this. Its such a common procedure, but no one ever talks about it or how painful it really is to have gallstones! I wish the internet was more open about this when I was going through this so many years ago, maybe I would have picked up good habits much earlier! Maintaining healthy habits is key to living without a gallbladder. Glad to see you're doing well!

Hi Faria, what Vitamins/Pre/Probiotic are you taking? Just had mine taken out 2 days ago and I am freaking out, read and listened too much ( after the surgery) about why I shouldn’t have it removed.. just hoping I didn’t sign up for another health issue.

I had mine removed at 19 (im 30 now) it was just a gallstone removal but when the doctors got in me, they saw that my gallbladder is already in such bad shape that they had to remove it right away. I remember having bad heartburns from it at first .. then it got worse that i had high fevers for days already so i was rushed to the hospital. if i had one thing to regret though is that i did not research enough to what i could have actually done because now i have a 4inch scar from the procedure that i’ll have for the rest of my life. Lol. I go to the bathroom more often than usual now but i feel so much better😊

just a quick FYI! You cant see your gall bladder with endoscopy. endoscopy only looks through the GI tract :)
