- When picking up a RARE ATI STORM CM case that was left in the junk section. I then knew I had to get it, clean it, and do a special Gaming PC Build with it. And today I present to you, the Ryzen 7 1700 (and wraith spire LED cooler), Vega 56 build that came together for $200. Thoguh lastly we test it out vs the RX 6600, RTX 3060, 4060 and even ARC a750 and RX 7600 shows that the performance isn't half bad....

Contacted a guy about a PC case. While chatting with him on FB I saw that he had another case for sale. When I asked him about it he said that it had "some old parts" in it. He didn't know any of the details but said they should be working and they'd come with for $50 usd. I bought both cases from him despite not knowing the parts. What were the "some old parts"? Well ... i7 6700k, Hyper 212 Black, Asrock Z170, EVGA modular 650 watt psu, 16gb of PNY XLR8 3200MHz DDR4, a 4tb HDD, and all Noctua fans. Got it home, threw in a drive and a GPU ... ALL WORKING. In an NZXT H510i case for $50. Should get a pretty good ROI on this one! Likely the best deal I've ever ran into.
Nice! Did it have a GPU?
@@mindnova7850he just said it didn't
@@mindnova7850 - Only what I listed. Good thing. Might have had a heart attack. lol
You used that man's technical illiteracy 😁
leave a 6pack on his doorstep after ✌️
Bryan's neighbors probably thought that he was using the vacuum cleaner while in fact he was benchmarking a budget banger with a blower style cooled gpu 😄
Yes city music always hitting 🙌 👌
Tech YES City, I liked this video because it's awesome!
I like how when the Vega 56/64 GPUs launched everyone said they were bad and now everyone is saying they were the best GPUs lol
I forgot that it even existed for a long time until either Budget Builds Official or RandomGaminginHD made a video on it reminding me of the Vega GPUs.
This was another card that miners gobbled up. Most of the cards wound up in the bin after the first cleaning, seals broken and capacitors missing around the huge Mono Die is not a good prospect for RMA back then. There is a huge overflow around the die of paste, it says "please clean me" but you should not without a microscope.
Vega was pretty bad at the time, and is definitely not "the best" gpu. When it launched the performance was underwhelming compared to nvidia's offerings and it suffered from a lot of bugs and driver issues. The problem in this video with Alan Wake 2 geometry not loading in is not only a common issue for Vega gpus in this game, it's an issue in other games too (Dragon's Dogma 2 is another common example). The Vega 64 was amd's flagship gpu, but it still gets it's pants beat by the 1080 Ti, which was Nividia's competing flagship around that time.
@@dremy746 on most of my personal stats and tests over the last couple of years I have found that the one Good Vega 56 I have, a Red Dragon 3 fan version puts up a good fight at 1080p. It is actually half the PCB board of a strix 1080/1080ti giving it twice the cooling. But still a dual slot card. 5600xt is 1080ti's Brother from another Mother. And then along came ray traceing, and SLI is just a thing from the past?
@@dremy746 because the card only intended to compete with the 1080 not the 1080 ti.... it was way cheaper.
Bring back top 10/5 pc builds with story time like we had in 2019
2019 will be making a comeback this year for sure. budget times are here on the used market.
@@techyescity Hi Bryan! I got a question on your last parts hunt in Akiba, does any of the shops there do on the spot tests to show its working? Coz as a tourist I don't have a PC I could use to test and neither would I be able to return it if I found its faulty back at home. What are your advice?
You get two thumbs up for this one. One for the great video, and another for a great retro mix.
I second that! Cheers!
That case turned out clean! Great build, hopefully it moves quickly
Even if it does not move, it shows there is still some performance in older parts that still pack a punch. In months to come, not years this form of content will hold it's ground.
Nothing hits like a good budget banger.
That retro music clip was fantastic man!
YES! Thank you, Tech Yes-man! :D
Early 2010s Cooler Master Cases seems to be were pretty good back then,. Specially the HAF ones.
What’s great about an old pc like this one is you could literally update the bios, toss in a 5700x3d, upgrade the ram and gpu and you suddenly have a pc that can hang with most of the newer systems out there.
I actually owned the board he had and it was a great board. Had an accident with an aio and fried it though.
This case is SICK, its an older case, but I love me an older cooler master! GREAT video!
Awesome build mate!!! Gotta love the value!
Dude that case is badass! Love the build man!
Such a cool build and great airflow to boot! Well done giving it a new life ❤
Great Easter eggs in the video as to how Bro stays in shape. Much appreciated.
I watched this rare tech UA-cam channel tell me how to build on a budget with used parts.
10/10 would recommend.
Buying a Vega 56 for a budget build is a terrible idea. Keep in mind it is outclassed by a 1660 Super and an RX6600 blows it right out of the water...Vega is something neither I nor Lisa Suh can forget fast enough. It would be like if intel had launched a super UHD dGPU in 2017....Like a dozen iGPUs just mashed together. You are better off buying a used 5700XT. It will probably be cheaper and will perform noticeably better.
Clever segue into the windows key ad.
nice video man , i love see you fixing old gaming pc
Nothing better than getting home from work, getting a nice joint rolled up and watching some Yes man.
the parts is true classic gem
These kind of videos are the best!
If you’re looking for CRC 5.56 in the US it was rebranded “Power Lube” back in the 90’s for us markets.
Great Vid.
That Starfox remix is a banger.
Also great job on that restoration, I really like the look of that case.
AB350 Pro4 ❤❤❤
Got it in 2017, with R5 1600, 16gb ram and RX 580.
Now running 5800x3D on it, 16 extra gigs of ram and 7900XT.
Even got Smart Access Memory enabled on it. It never dissapointed me.
why not get grab a B550 if u have the budget for those other parts?
@@daytimerocker3808 Because I'm planning to jump platforms straight to 9xx0X3D CPU.
I aint throwing away my older components anymore, thank you very much.
Wish i woke up sooner, i had some windows 7 computers thrown away, when i could have just upgraded them, silly me 10 years ago.
Really enjoyed seeing what you came up with to put in the ATI Storm CM case. The Vega 56 was the cherry on top. !Cheers
If Mr Motivator had given up Spandex and became a system integrator.
Vega discrete GPUs somehow fell trough the cracks. They were never as popular as their predecessor Polaris. Then RDNA 1.0 came and Vega was quickly forgotten. As for this PC, I would be tempted to add cheap 1TB HDD for more storage space, for older games that run well from HDD.
RIP the DVD disc drive. Amazing how we used to rely on those things! So long can hardly remember what to call those spinning disc thingys.
My bread and butter. Did a Deadpool themed build for under $250 CAD. Just ordered a little figurine and used comic panels to decorate the interior.
Oh, my! Noice!❤ Had one 1700 to change for 2700 since it was faulty. About 7 months without PC were worth it as the change itself as a warranty issue solving cost my bro nothing😊
Just used TYC to get a yuge discount on an SCD Windows key. Thanks again, TYC.
The floating heads were scaarryy though 😅
And I thought since its Alan Wake 2 the floting head is just part of the game 🤣
I wished my PC came was this cool
Came for PC. Rewind retro mix a few times 😅
Noice video . Hope is worth the work at it .
Gotta watch before I sleep 😴
ngl the ati case kinda slaps
The Starfox remix... Nice touch.
Seeing those dual bluray drives in the case is ngl kinda nuts xD
It has a dual cup holder awesome!🥰
love the case. reminds me of the old coolermaster NVIDIA cases which i wish i had bought back in the day (now people want a fortune for them)
This wallpaper is just magical lol
By moving the optical drives to the bottom 5.25 bays and adding a "120mm Fan Bracket for PC 5.25 inch bays" you could add another 120mm fan to the top and improve airflow.
3:58 When the Tech Yes Sex Tape comes out this is definitely the sound track!
I love the case
I definitively give a like for the broken glass, it was so funny.
That character had some long hair extensions and a tampon hanging out in the floating head clip LOL
Random Magnesium Powder B Roll. xD
Bonus Eldridge horror with Alan Wake 2, lmao!
I love that case so much! Look at that red accent mesh covers, and those disc trays. Inside the case, unpainted bare metal.
HDD trays with the window, Built all in with AMD Parts. You really gave it the Tech Yes Lovin' it deserved for such a cool lookin' case! I would buy it.
But i'm in the UK. Bah!
You'd need a CRT monitor, Logitech G5 mouse, Internet Navigator Keyboard and a house that's not been renovated since the 90s to match the aesthetic of that case.
I have the exact same RX Vega 56 (I bought it from RandomGaminginHD). It's a brilliant card and I used it a lot for my old CPU testing (Sandy/Ivy Bridge). it's also got Samsung HBM2 memory which can handle higher voltages for better memory OCs.
That background music reminded me of One Must Fall 2097.
that pc case is gorgeous what a find, cause youd have to go back some to get an actual ATI card since they moved on to AMD branding, some time ago now, I think Sapphire made a heavily ATI themed Crossfire Motherboard back in the Day, i remmember having something like Radeon HD2600 (single slot version) in 4 way crossfire back in the early 2000's
Probably a good choice to go with a Sparkle GPU with that blue case
By rotating the CPU fan shroud 90 degrees clockwise you can improve the ascetic of your build. It's quite easy to do.
i am such a big fan of ati/amd and if i found that case i would keep it!
What a throwback the vega 56 and vega 64 were AMD finally starting to fight back against the nvidia monopoly
Nice restore. Feel 256gb is a good size to be able to fit the OS and a modern large game like BG3.
i pulled my 6700k from a closet works like a charm build it for my 12 year old niece
Do a barrel Roll! banger music, banger game 😁
I get a kick watching you build and bring back to life the older hardware and that case still rocks. You use the CRC spray like I use Tabasco sauce, I put that chit on everything lol. Great job on the build, very motivational too, now I'm looking around to see what I'll tinker with and build next.
That’s cool
You did well on that case. What is that big rotating knob next to the power on button at the top front of the case?
I have not seen CRC since the 70's. I am glad UR not using WD40, that promotes rust! I use Inox myself
I was one of the first in Oz to get the Vega 64. It was a beautiful card, the GFX were so fluid; but I swapped it for a gaming monitor. Later I got a 1080ti KiNGPiN
An Intel ArcA770 and budget first gen i9 might be a interesting pairing in the Lian Li case
That spray is not suppose to be used for computer component parts. (Things like the case it is fine)
This is info straight from the manufacture.
Price/performance?! Red and black?! This is my dream rig!
Unrealistic prices for 99% of people common theme on this channel.
In my country Vega 56 is closer to $120 second hand & 1700 go for around $55 without cooler working it out for all parts looking at closer to $300-350 for this build.
i love those builds! i have one with a sapphire pulse vega56. but it does not draw over 300 w not ever. even with a 50% increased power draw it does like 250w maxed .
could it be i used a fan mod 2xp12 arctic it never gets to 70 degrees and is much more quiet then the normal fans ?
What do you use here in australia. Im keen for another bunnings trip.
what if you use RGB for the front panel, for the upper front panel and for down panel. That will be look amazing and looks like the PC is now alive.
I am a bit of a Nippon-phile / otaku so i was imagining the build action with a J-pop anime soundtrack instead of the retro one. 😅 Thumbs up though for an entertaining retro build.
Yes Starfox!!!
You could also try modded drivers? That might fix some of the game bugs
Last week I also bought a vega56 airboost card for 80$ but sadly, it was faulty. Launching any program would cause it to artifact like crazy. That was very disappointing since I don't get good deals like that often. Good thing I got it refunded. I bought an rx580 instead for 60$ but it seems to be faulty too so I'm also in the process of getting it refunded.
does that specific MSI Air Boost Vega 56 have the insulation on the substrate between the GPU die and the HBM? I heard some Vega 56 and 64 models don't have that, so some people unintentionally killed their GPUs when cleaning the thermal paste off that part.
I'm planning on getting that specific card to replace my reference RX 580 4GB since it only costs $80 here 2nd hand and I like blower style coolers.
Vega 56 is best to just clean the top of the die, no swabbing around the outside of it for sure. I would rather to mix thermal paste around the edge than to get a good clean, and lose a working card. 56, and 64 are the only 2 cards I know of that are so touchy.
I have an Asrock AB350 Pro and honestly it's a nice motherboard, I'm currently rocking a Ryzen 7 5700X amd 6600XT (I'm looking to replace the GPU at some point)...
I have a question about the sprays you use. What makes you use the multi spray and 5-56 over regular Electronics Cleaner from CRC for instance?
The AB350 Pro 4 is a decent motherboard though I've had one of those go bad after a bios update.
You can´t go wrong with 5-56.
Anyone know a comparable cleaner like the one used by Bryan as I cannot find it up in Canada?
Yeah me too.
So I have to ask, was the bad power supply brand name LEPR? Was the reason for replacement that the cable ends were falling off? Just checking...
I have a ryzen 1700 but no motherboard, because i updated the bios so i can use the ryzen 5600 and now i can't use the 1700. CPU was ok for my needs from 2017 to 2023. 5600 was only 120€ in 2023 so i upgraded bios on old b350.
I've ran many 1st gen Ryzens on newest bioses. This 1st gen removal is a one big bs.
@@Cpt_Wolf what do you want to say? That ryzen 1700 can run on same bios as ryzen 5600?
would depend upon the Board, and the manufacture X370, X470, X570 this does apply. I have an x570 Pro4 Asrock board that supports 1700X up to 5700X on the same Bios. I have used both chips with no sweat, just need to update chipset after boot.
Are the solutions you use (CRC 5-56 in this case) similar to WD-40? Can anyone recommend something in EU?
How do you flip PCs in Japan?
Where I can copy your VEGA 56 undervolt profile?
what is CRC 556 is it like WD40 ?
I'm picking up a Vega 56 very soon as well for so cheap, don't know how my electricity bill is going to look like but oh well😅
Mine died last year but I did buy second hand and ran it for years before it died
The problem with using such an old case is that it will only have USB 2.0 ports on case. ATI was bought by AMD in 2006...#USB20
Only issue with Vega 64/56 is they no longer get driver updates so can have horrible performance issues on newer titles
Can you retest the Vega 56 on an Intel system. The first Gen Ryzen are doing no good for the Vega frame rates
Are you back in Japan? Damn, should have sold you my old PC parts, cos I’m in Brisbane 😅
recently got a dell precision t3600 for free. xeon 2650 8 core 16 thread sandy bridge (yes!), 32gb ddr3 1600, 650w power supply, and some amd firepro graphics card lol. thinking of throwing a gtx 1660 super or a 1080 in it and flipping it. thoughts?
11:40 RAM is in the wrong slots. It should be in the second and fourth :)
Yeah would only boot with 2133 in those slots :(
