Great review! I love flying mine. Thanks Dustin! I am 79. Still having fun with the drones. Only flying DJI MAVIC AIR AND MAVIC AIR 2 along with the phantom 3 std. Videos like yours helps learning more about the Drones. Thanks Again. :)
the single gps has nothing to do with the landing. mine lands within 3ft every time. when u armed your motors it did not say home point recorded. it landed where home point was recorded. every time I arm the motors it says home point recorded. yours didn't at that particular time
Great review. Actually the thing I like best is that you don't edit out any mistakes (like the follow me - altitude issue), you learn as you go like the rest of us.
+redclockdotcom Thank you! I'm glad you like my style of review. I try to come from the angle of a buyer and make it as raw as possible. I do edit out my fumbling words but like to show the viewers what to expect as a new owner. This drone was not mine so I did not get to do the full multi part (unbox, inspection, setup, flight test, pros & cons) treatment as I normally do.
full throttle down will give you v ring state powering up makes it worse always have forward or back speed airspeed if coming down that fast you could hear the uneven pitch in motors caused by rough air thats been thru ur props already
F-mode is not failsafe mode ;) its Function mode where you can choose between funtions for the quad to perform. The failsafe you are refering to is "RTH=Return to home" and the landing when you press rth at the end is because you have to be more than 20 meters from homepoint if you are closer than 20 meters it will just land. What phone is that? For anyone who consider buying the standard, do consider what you will be using it for, currently it has issues with range, best advice would be to go for the advanced since that platform performs alot better compared to the small price increase
15:08 I don't think it has something to do with dual GPS antennas, I saw some reviews with the Phantom 3 pro and even the Phantom 4 sometimes they go home far from home point where you take them off.. I think it's a GPS location offset.. As you check the map you think the home point is directly at your point but if you view and zoom in the map you'll see that the H is offset same as the drone is offset few feet away from your pin point on GPS that is why it land not exactly from where you take it off. That's why I don't do fully Landing in RTH mode, I just want it to go back close to me then manually land it.
Thanks for this video. I just got a Phantom 3 SE today and seeing what you did helped me a lot with some of the functions. Very interesting to see the drop mechanism too!
I love the Hubsan X4 Pro Drone Parachute Recovery System I bought on ebay for SUPER CHEAP! It will be going on my Phantom 3 Standard when it gets here. I had it installed on my 5 pound hexacopter and it worked perfectly!
I just ordered mine on Amazon. The price was under $350. I figured I'd upgrade from the Syma, GpToys, Kaideng, JJRC, and a few others. They were great to learn on, but I wanted a quad with better controls and handling. My hand got injured in an accident and I'm permanently disabled. Hopefully the DJI will give me better handling.
so I didn't look thru all the comments, but the first landing may have been off because you switched out of GPS mode and back in. my guess is that it re-recorded that as home. With the controller landing I also think there may have been a delay from launch to when it recorded it's home point. It seems to have landed to that spot it drifted to after the second launch.
Noticed when you started the drone that your back left prop wasn't spinning as fast as the others. Mine did this and auto takeoff caused drone to flip once.
I strongly suggest calibrating compas be for each take off I didn't and my relocated its own home position to over a mile away when I flew out of range , now lives in the trees
On the first launch didn't he turn off the GPS to show how the drone would drift and then turn it back on so wouldn't that be the the point at which the prone would return home?
Another reason for being a fan of P3 Standard is that if you look at RC Groups, the P3 Standard has over 1800 posts, P3 advanced/Professional has over 55,000 post and P4 already has over 7500 posts...maybe the Standard has fewer owners (I doubt it at $499) but I'm thinking that it has fewer issues overall....just an opinion!
bought one of these today at best buy $500bucks but its a lot of fun to fly. I do highly recommend the DJI phantom 3 (standard) for ppl trying to learn. we got it up to 1600ft in air and its great. I plan to have mines wrapped and customize it 😊😊
Sorry to hear Dustin....it wasn't the wind...I bet it was the CPU in the bird went bonkers and stopped forward flight...do you have video saved on your iPad.
+Ricky ThePhoton Dexter it was a n right flight so there won't be much to see. Good idea to see if it was indeed trying to pitch forward though. I had the pitch full forward off and on for ten minutes and it just wen slowly sideways...lol. DJI tech support is saying it was pilot error after analyzing the saved logs due to "non ideal conditions" :(. I was using a Samsung Galaxy tab and I'll see if it saved the FPV video.
Yeah try that..maybe you can get a little info at least...DJI seldom takes blame for their Phantoms not working correctly...and if you bitch and moan enuff they will send you a replacement...but that is exhausting to do
Thanks for the video. Bought one of these couple of days ago(so excited bc it's my first "real" quadcopter that is not a "toy") but only had one good flight so far because of heavy rain that has been going on here in Finland. You should calibrate the compass every time you fly in a new place, at least that's what they suggest in the phantom 3 user manual. Someone mentioned that the inaccuracy was because you changed to altitude hold mode but even in that mode if you have good GPS signal the RTH works because it wont forget the home point or turn the GPS off, just the GPS assisted flight so it won't have anything to do with the RTH inaccuracy but missing out on the compass calibration might have. Also the right side lever lowest position is for the advanced flight modes, follow me/point of interest/waypoints/home lock/course lock(headless mode). Return to home activates from the left side lever if you flip it all the way up and down more than 3 times. Inaccuracy on my RTH test was about 2-3 meters so about 7-10 feet? which isn't too bad considering everything you get in this quadcopter and btw that drop mechanism is pretty cool!
*Just got one, I wonder why yours didn't record the home point? My return to home gas always been within 1ft of the take off. Updating the IMU may help you also.*
DJI. YIKES! You really should get your hands on an good old YUNEEC Q500+. A ton of sophistication without all the head scratching. No cell hone hanging off of the controller. No piles of confusing steps to make it RTH, just flip a 3 position switch. It lands reliably where the transmitter is when it runs out of juice. The radio vibrates to alert you at two battery running down voltages. Then its fail safe RTH kicks in. It wont land it in a tree or pond. The GEO fence wont allow it to land within 15 feet of the top of your head. It has a 5" diagonal high resolution screen built into the controller. Android! The more I learn about DJI the happier I am that I purchased my $600 bird. I couldn't afford a Phantom Menace now anyway! Actually, I couldn't afford to buy my Q500+ now either, even at its way more reasonable price.
Prices have come down in my country also with 300 euro's, and I think it will come down even more after the new laws for Quads are in place, when you are not allowed too fly higher than 50meters and no further than 100 meters, the shops will start dumping these Quads below cost price
50 meters is just below the altitude commercial jets will soon cruise at. You know that all jumbo jets and 757s will soon be flying at just above tree top level. That is the new commercial aviation rule that will be implemented any day now. The bureaucrats figure that when a plain has an emergency in flight , falling all of those thousands of meters is what kills everyone. At 60 meters they can just pull over, get out, fix he problem and go on. That makes perfect seance to a brain dead bureaucrat! Thinking rationally takes away from their sitting on their fat asses, drinking coffee, eating biscuits and reading today's paper. :-(
Is there really that much of a difference? I need help as I am not experienced with drones and want to buy one, but looking at review videos the phantom 4 just looked like a slightly tweaked version of the phantom 4 but double the price
With the P4.. in my mind here is what your paying extra for. Supposedly longer flight time of 28mins, obstacle avoidance, better 4K camera and a fresh new look and build. If none of that matters to you then...
Dustin Dunnill Thank you Dustin :) would the phantom 4 not fly much further than the phantom 3? and how much longer flight time? Sorry to be to diggy about it :/ Its just I saw the phantom 3 ranging between £500 - £600 and the phantom 4 ranging between £12200 - £1400

great upload thanks for the tips flew mine first time had a fly away crashed in to trees dident no turn remote off and it flys to home point luckily no damage
The wind was blowing away from you so you sent the drone further away to drop the chute? Why didn't you fly it further behind you so that the chute would drift towards you?
With that low battery she will land asap, meaning to save itself from a crash she will land immediately!Cool chute drop! I didn't get how you launched the chute tho, do oyu explain in vid, I will have to watch from start.
Very very good review Dustin i am now going ahead and placing my order i like what i see this quad will work perfect for my needs and my limited experience. keep up the great work and nice job on the trigger good idea, thanks again.
The very last return to home (when you battery was low) didn't work because the drone just lands in the same spot it was in when you aren't that far away from the home point.
I think the drone automatically lands 10-20 feet from takeoff pos. because you wouldn't want a drone to land on you right? Btw great video and very well deatailed explanation of all the features, thanks!
Great Review Dustin...I have a Phantom 3 standard and to be honest that drone you are using is not anything like mine...if I do a compass dance my drone will always land within 2 feet of launch. that quad doesnt want to work like a champ. The XK380 with the dual Sat beats my Phantom by 1 foot everytime.
Could the Return To Home feature be a few feet off because u didn't calibrate the compass (at least you didn't show it in the video)? My DJI Phantom 3 Standard lands within 18" from the take off point.
I probably should have re calibrated at this park. The owner said they did calibrate recently. So yes compass slightly out of wack may have been a factor here.
do you think the return to home spot lock was determined when it took off and stabilized looked like the was the slot when i rewound the video. looking at getting one on black friday i wish i had the funds for the mavic
Someone may already have told you, or you may have worked it out, However, thought I'd tell you anyway. You can put it into RTH from the controller using the LEFT switch. Toggle it 3 times, all the way down and up. You're also missing the point a bit with this drone. Its a camera platform, not a racer. No point at all tearing about like a crazy man :-) Did you notice how rock steady the video footage is. Like a camera on a pole. Could you see the screen on your phone? I find that in sunlight I cant see a thing. Have to get some goggles for proper FPV.
+Chad Ponder Yes, and yes Chad. It will rise up first. Default is rise above launch altitude 30 meters but can be changed up to 500meters if you want in the application.
Hey man, so when you are flying the quad and you have the two smaller screens on the left hand side in the video (one showing your phone feed) and what is the smaller screen below that? Seems like it is not as choppy as the live phone view on the top mini screen (maybe the bottom one you edited?) Anyways, solid video mate
I just got a P3A what timing you did your first review on the XK X380 right after I bought it you better slow down I' m running out of room anyway there were some guy's on the XK 380 owners facebook page said the 380 would not fly in 20mph winds I showed them my video and was looking for the one you did with the 380 in high winds and could not find it could you tell me which video it's in Thanks this P3A with the litchi app is off the hook
Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I agree about starting off small and working my way up. Is this the one your talking about? www.amazon.com/X5C-Explorers-6-Axis-Quadcopter-Camera/dp/B00KI03U8Q
Lg_Gamer This is just my 2 cents, but to start in drones, I would reccomend the cheerson cx10. It is fairly quick to charge, can be flown indoors without any danger to furniture as it would fit in the palm of your hand, as well as the fact thag loads of props can be bought on banggood really cheaply. Most of all you can afford to break 2 or 3 as they only cost $15 each.
Pretty neat and innovative way of rigging a drop mechanism. I was actually surprised that the P3S was still able to fly with all that added weight (the added stuff for the drop, and the added weight of the parachute canister). As for engaging RTH with the S2 switch, from the DJI Phantom 3 Standard manual " Toggle the S2 switch at back and forth at least twice to initiate Smart RTH". The manual for any of these models is available as a free download at the DJI website, and might help clear up some suspected problems. Thanks for the review ... looking forward to more of your in depth reviews! Cheers.
For the Phantom 3 to return to home "in Kansas", toggle the switch two or three times, turn around four times and click your heels together twice and repeatedly say, "Therese no place like home". From the Wizard Of OZ manual! Barnes and Nobel on line.
I bought this drone last week but the video lagged badly, I had to return it. It did take great pics but couldn't deal with the choppy performance of the video camera
Hello Great thorough review. As someone new to camera drones, I was thinking about starting with a holy stone hs200 (under $100) with a fpv 720p camera and then later get the dji phantom 3 standard. OR why not just save the money and get what you want from the start. There is a huge leap between 720p and 2.7k video and a fixed camera vs 3 axis gimbal which could make anyone look like a director of photography. With the phantom 3, I would opt for a bundle package with extra sd card, prop guards and a backpack carrying case. I was told that you can't store the quad with the prop guards on. Any opinion or insights?
+ToNY Vix if you have never flown, it's highly advisable to start with more of a cheaper toy grade multirotor. I've heard so many stories of people buying a phantom or other quad in the price range just to have it crash after the first few flights mainly due to not knowing how to pilot manually if the auto functions fail. For example; if the RTH is triggered and there is an obstacle in it's route, or if the landing point is not accurate and manual adjustment is needed. If you are already a seasoned pilot then save up for the good one you want :)
Thank you storm trooper. I appreciate the quick reply.I knew the right answer, I just needed to hear it from someone else. I have experience with the cheap syma mini copters but nothing above $20.Do you have any knowledge of the Holy Stone line of quad copters? They have excellent Amazon reviews and customer service stories that go above and beyond. It has a fixed 720p camera which technically is HD but light years away from 2.7K. Maybe a small piece of rubber between it and the quad would act as a crude stabilizer.
So what if the drone rotated does the buttons switch like if u pull it backwards does it go backwards or is it like its at a new angel so does the side become backwards etc idk if that makes sense or not
Cool stuff! Will the parachute deploy also if attached directly to the drone? This parachute is made for the Hubsan X4 Pro, wondering if it would save also your Phantom in case of free fall (e.g. non-original battery 1 cell fail... happened to me, drone totaled... :( )
Zack Briggs no, you can fly with data turned off if you please. you connect your phone to the drone own "wifi" and that's how it connects your phone to the remote.
+markybyeah cool man. My friend whom ones is said he crashed it some so maybe it was influenced. Could also be a bad day for GPS sat alignment (happens occasionally). Glad your liking yours.
What's with the huge position error with Return to Home mode? Does the aircraft use its initial power on point as home or does it use the phone/tablet GPS position? I've been flying manually for landing so far. At my usual flying area, a position error like what you saw could mean landing on hard ground or splashing into water.
+raboox9 it logs the take off point internally. There are many factors which may cause this accuracy. It may have done better if I calibrated the compass in this park prior to the flight. It also could have been the satellite array the GPS antenna could see was not great or possibly the metal from the attachments to the quad were interference.
Dustin Dunnill The largest CEP I've seen was 10 meters from the home point so it could be a GPS accuracy issue. More expensive models get Glonass and Beidu support so they should be more accurate. I usually use return to home to get the drone within visual range, then hand fly it for a mid air catch.
Good vid mate.....Best review on YT for the standard....I have just bought one...its set to mode 2....I fly in mode 1....any chance of a review on how to change the transmitter mode??
+everythingzone You should get better accuracy by the sound of others. It depends on the satellites in view at the time and other factors some days are better some worse for accuracy. Everything was calibrated.
Great review! I love flying mine. Thanks Dustin! I am 79. Still having fun with the drones. Only flying DJI MAVIC AIR AND MAVIC AIR 2 along with the phantom 3 std. Videos like yours helps learning more about the Drones. Thanks Again. :)
the single gps has nothing to do with the landing. mine lands within 3ft every time. when u armed your motors it did not say home point recorded. it landed where home point was recorded. every time I arm the motors it says home point recorded. yours didn't at that particular time
also it is always landing way to the right. why? cause wind... it is not trying to hold its position when going down on auto-land.
+Steffenf14 yeah mine landed like a foot from where I took it off and it was pretty windy
Yeah that off landing point was due to the wind more than likely.
And dident he turn off gps for a bit? Woldent that make it different.
No. that just turns off the stabilization. the gps is still working.
6:47 'Getting a little breeze from that direction' 5 Seconds later all you can hear is gusts of wind! :D
This guy creates the best review out there. He deserves way more subs that this
+Jacob Hansen Thanks Jacob! :)
Nice. Drones need a parachute in board for drone fall protection
I think Kelly is right about the compass calibration. Perhaps that would have allowed your Phantom to land from your exact takeoff point.
you are good reviewer and your voice is perfectly made for this job . You just influenced me to buy one . cool
+TheTwinsBlade Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
You have given me hope in not regretting buying this drone lol, excellent video presentation I bought this version yesterday
If you check back on the video the last time you flicked the gps switch was about the position the drone landed so it looked pretty close to me
You didn't calibrate the compass before you started.....
15:08 I don't think it has something to do with dual GPS antennas, I saw some reviews with the Phantom 3 pro and even the Phantom 4 sometimes they go home far from home point where you take them off.. I think it's a GPS location offset.. Love mine after flying the Syma X8c for a year :-)
I flew the x8w for like one year. But this is better.
@@luukzuidema7031 same, that thing is trash haha
Thanks for this video. I just got a Phantom 3 SE today and seeing what you did helped me a lot with some of the functions. Very interesting to see the drop mechanism too!

I love the Hubsan X4 Pro Drone Parachute Recovery System I bought on ebay for SUPER CHEAP! It will be going on my Phantom 3 Standard when it gets here. I had it installed on my 5 pound hexacopter and it worked perfectly!
+Duane Morris A cool kit for sure. 👍
Noticed when you started the drone that your back left prop wasn't spinning as fast as the others. Mine did this and auto takeoff caused drone to flip once.

Just learned a whole bunch about my new Phantom 3 Standard watching this video, thank you my brother!
+Andy Davenport cool man. Glad it helped :)
failsafe is the s2 button, ,located on the left top of the tx, not right...toggle it twice up/down and it will rth =)
+tosmjspakonc thank you.
+David Long Hi David. The drone records it's home point at arming. Switching modes mid flight does not effect the return to home point
Thanx, I think u have to perform calibration to make the GPS to work accurately every time you launch the drone
+Robert Otim Good call. I probably should have done it in this spot prior to flight.
I can't really tell... The video looks good to me... What are your thoughts? I'm looking into getting a drone. probably this one.

Thanks for the video ! :)
Nice tutorial. You are very thorough. Great Job! I am planning to purchase first Drone and I'm debating the 3. standard or the 3 4K.
hey bro I have a phantom 3 standard in great condition txt me 626 9915681

I have a breeze 4K drone it is very slow but it has a 4K camera but is the ski phantom 3 a fast drone and does it have a good camera
Yes, it's a good alternative with better video stabilization and flight time, but larger .
I wonder if it recorded a different home point when switching through the modes in flight .
Very very good review Dustin i am now going ahead and placing my order i like what i see this quad will work perfect for my needs and my limited experience.
keep up the great work and nice job on the trigger good idea, thanks again.
+cibie01 Glad it helped.
On September 14,2021 Tuesday ! How high up feet wise is This DJI Phantom 3 Standard Right Now !at Time 06:20 am EST Time
Barometer - an instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude. Just sayin
I didn't see you calibrate the gps before you launched could that be the reason for the landing distance?
The very last return to home (when you battery was low) didn't work because the drone just lands in the same spot it was in when you aren't that far away from the home point.
Where is the phantom 4 review? I really want to see it
Appreciate this video! The layout of the screen and tests you did were very helpful for a potential buyer. Thank you.
Thanks Ace. Mission accomplished :)
I think the drone automatically lands 10-20 feet from takeoff pos. because you wouldn't want a drone to land on you right? Btw great video and very well deatailed explanation of all the features, thanks!
This Phantom 3 standard vs. Hubson H109S X4. What are your thoughts?
Great video guy... Thanks a lot ...Just bought a Phantom 3 a couple of days ago......and haven't flown it yet...
I can't find an option in advanced settings to turn on or off the LED, also how did you make that menu popup with the option to follow you?
This drone does not have return button. Will it return after switching off RC controll?
Thats a great drone for the money. Think I'll be getting one soon. 😊
Tip for future reference:
Don't Use A Wide Angle lens Camera
Etc GoPro. Xiami
+Joshua2001816 G it's better to get more in screen for a first person review
Could the Return To Home feature be a few feet off because u didn't calibrate the compass (at least you didn't show it in the video)? My DJI Phantom 3 Standard lands within 18" from the take off point.
I probably should have re calibrated at this park. The owner said they did calibrate recently. So yes compass slightly out of wack may have been a factor here.
since am in India, can I charge this battery with 240 V AC or do I need any separate adapter for that???
Is this LG G5 phone? how does it work? any issues? I am thinking on getting P3 and I have LG g5
And between 3 professional and mavic pro ? wich drone should i buy ?
Nice Video, I didn't see a link for the "guard gimbal" ?
+INTELMAXELL Added the links.
do you think the return to home spot lock was determined when it took off and stabilized looked like the was the slot when i rewound the video. looking at getting one on black friday i wish i had the funds for the mavic
How does it compare to the 20CX?
Dude, you did awesome. I think I will order the DJI 3 4K
Thanks Vincent. A great time to with all the sales going on :)
I just ordered this. How is it if you wanna take a little flight over water (like a bay or even surfers)? Would you trust it?
also. when it returns home does it automatically fly up to avoid stuff or do you set it to do that?
+Chad Ponder Yes, and yes Chad. It will rise up first. Default is rise above launch altitude 30 meters but can be changed up to 500meters if you want in the application.
Alright, thank you so much!
Hi Dustin I've noticed in other videos that you were able to get to the clouds very quickly there visibly very low where do you live my friend
do you get electricity to cover servo phantom rabsby led
Dustin what do you think P3S or Autel Xstar Premium? Thoughts?
I just got a P3A what timing you did your first review on the XK X380 right after I bought it you better slow down I' m running out of room anyway there were some guy's on the XK 380 owners facebook page said the 380 would not fly in 20mph winds I showed them my video and was looking for the one you did with the 380 in high winds and could not find it could you tell me which video it's in Thanks this P3A with the litchi app is off the hook
+john mccay in my channel I did a full review if the x380 here: ua-cam.com/video/QZBsiSvyaSE/v-deo.html At the end I fly in high winds at my house.
Already have p3standard,p3 professional,and spark
Great video. what is a good start off drone???
Start off with a toy like the Syma X5c series or similar then the P3 is a great deal for a camera gps drone once you master on the toy :)
Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I agree about starting off small and working my way up. Is this the one your talking about?

Lg_Gamer This is just my 2 cents, but to start in drones, I would reccomend the cheerson cx10. It is fairly quick to charge, can be flown indoors without any danger to furniture as it would fit in the palm of your hand, as well as the fact thag loads of props can be bought on banggood really cheaply. Most of all you can afford to break 2 or 3 as they only cost $15 each.
plus their r settings for low voltage actions to be taken which u need to set
Which phantom 3 would you recommend?
+Don Fish Jr. (The Flying Fish) lol..
+Bill Somrak Thanks Bill. A fun experiment.
it looks like it's marking the initial hover point as home.
I'm interested in buying one soon but I noticed that you could see the propellers in the footage. Is there a work around for that?
Thanks!
+Compelling Moments tilt gimbal down slightly or fly slower
Thanks
I bought this drone last week but the video lagged badly, I had to return it. It did take great pics but couldn't deal with the choppy performance of the video camera
Hello
Great thorough review.
So what if the drone rotated does the buttons switch like if u pull it backwards does it go backwards or is it like its at a new angel so does the side become backwards etc idk if that makes sense or not
The right side switch is not for return to home the left one is
Cool stuff! Will the parachute deploy also if attached directly to the drone? This parachute is made for the Hubsan X4 Pro, wondering if it would save also your Phantom in case of free fall (e.g. non-original battery 1 cell fail... happened to me, drone totaled... :( )
+RC Fly Base Yes, as long as you could mount it and keep it upright when armed. It will deploy if drone drops or passes 90°
Does this use up cellphone data? I'm new to the world of drones.
Zack Briggs no, you can fly with data turned off if you please. you connect your phone to the drone own "wifi" and that's how it connects your phone to the remote.
Zack Briggs i fly aircraft mode on my phone and turn wifi on that way theres no distractions from other apps or ppl calling
Mine returns home to the exact same spot within 2-3 feet at max. Nothing to do with dual antenna bro
Make sure you do a compass cal
+markybyeah cool man. My friend whom ones is said he crashed it some so maybe it was influenced. Could also be a bad day for GPS sat alignment (happens occasionally). Glad your liking yours.
Heck yea, now these things can be used to deliver dope :)
I would love to buy one but I dont like the short flight time.
Good vid mate.....Best review on YT for the standard....I have just bought one...its set to mode 2....I fly in mode 1....any chance of a review on how to change the transmitter mode??
+Pete Finn right on Pete. Not sure about mode 2 sorry. I'm sure a search may find you some answers 👍
About the RTH inaccuracy, did you calibrate all the sensors? Or is this normal behaviour?
+everythingzone You should get better accuracy by the sound of others. It depends on the satellites in view at the time and other factors some days are better some worse for accuracy. Everything was calibrated.
Where did you get those stickers for the controller??
