I'm pretty sure this comment is a joke, although I don't get the reference myself, but just in case anyone takes it seriously...Katanas didn't need pommels. Bludgeoning someone with the pommel was a technique used pretty much exclusively by European knights. This was because they wore heavy armour. A pommel strike to a foe's helm stunned them, and allowed the attacker a moment to thrust his blade into a weak point in his enemy's armour -the eyes or the neck, usually. Plate armour could deflect a broadsword slash or stab without much problem unless it was very poorly made, so this was pretty much the only way for a fight between two knights to end. This was the main reason knights wore gauntlets - the crossguard protected the hands from the enemies' sword, but having metal gloves on allowed a knight to hold his sword by the blade and swing the pommel at his foe's head, a technique appropriately called 'murder strike'. Japenese (and indeed Chinese and Korean, who the Japense fought on occasion) armies at the time when Katana swords were in wide spread use used lighter armour, and thus, the slashing technique of Katana fighting was more useful. Of course, the Katana was just a back up weapon anyway, for the Samurai at least. Samurai didn't like close quarters combat because it was a tad dangerous, so they fought with guns, polearms, and bows whenever they could.
That last sword had me laughing. I bet archeologist was like, “oh look, an ancient sword. Imma treat it like it’s not live and touch it with my finger! I earned this degree!”
No sword should be sharp after that long a time, it was thought impossible by the experts of his time. Even today it can't be replicated. Nobody can forge a sword like that and they are still working on finding out how through metallurgy.
The Chinese sword was made more than 2000 years ago, no rust and still razer sharp. Chromium plating technology was used and archeologist are unable to find out how they done that
There is no rust because it's made of bronze, not iron. Bronze doesn't rust. It is also not chromium plated. The trace metals such as sulfur and watertight scabbard helped prevent copper oxidation.
