I wonder if the shift from cool tones to warm tones was because of the obsessions with tanning at the time. Even to this day, so much people wear foundations that are much too warm for their skintone, it's as if we have this fear of cool tones
Also, respected MUAs like Bobbi Brown and Charlotte Tilbury have successfully convinced people that they *need* yellow foundations to neutralize pink tones, it’s because of them that so many cool-toned people wear foundations that don’t blend seamlessly into their neck even if their blending techniques are good. When she said she worked at MAC in the late 90s I was so confused, because she looks and seem so young, but then my face dropped when I looked up your age..45 years old?! She looks goood
Our perception of age and aging is completely skewed by media, marketing and online influencer culture that is OBSESSED with youth. 25 is not old. 35 is not old. 45 is not old. Even 55 isn’t that old. Actual women in their late 30’s, 40’s and up are practically invisible in media, and I think it’s really ruining young women’s ability to accept aging because there are no role models or examples of womanhood between the ages of 29 and 80. The shift to warm is visible in foundation too. I know we all make fun of old orange foundations but as someone pale and cool-toned but NOT pink, finding anything to put on my face has been a nightmare. Everything is sickly yellow, white, or pink. BEIGE! Kingdom for a cool beige!
I’ve given up on foundation for the same reason and primarily use Korean BB creams or tinted moisturizers here. It’s strange because I didn’t have this problem as much in the 2000s. It feels like the lines do much better now including darker foundations now but forgot cool toned people exist. I’ve noticed a lot of lines that don’t have pale pink foundations also don’t have blue black ones, either.
19:51 Try Necromancy Cosmetica and/or Abomination cosmetics. They are kinda indie brands, and more gothy/alternative, but ISTG these types of brands are the only ones these days that UNDERSTAND THE ASSIGNMENT of cool toned stuff!!! I was born '97, and was always sad that I missed out on iconic frosty, cool toned make-up of the time, so I've been on the lookout ever since. Hope this helps & make a separate video if you find more dupes, that would be a godsend! 🤎🤍🖤
I LOVE that Vamp lipstick that you put on. It reminds me of the color I was addicted to back in my day and beyond called Cherry Jubilee from Avon. It’s a very close dupe to Vamp.
we need these videos to be at least 1 hour long! hands down you are one of the most interesting makeup lovers and artists on the internet, i don't even wear makeup but i'm so fascinated by all the discontinued and rare gems that you always present to us.
Revlon made so many great things in the 1990s, all long gone. And the 1980s-into-1990s had so many gems from YSL, Dior, Lauder, Helena Rubenstein etc-- and that's just make up! Anything to do with frost, sheen, metallic and unusual finishes, wow. And does anybody remember the early 2000s' Stila eyeshadows in the silver cardboard circular containers? The pigment and finish of the colour 'Pigalle'-- WOW! Also, the Kat Von D eyeshadows were sensational, particularly the unbelievable power and buttery texture of the colour 'Electric Wizard'. Everything I love gets either reformulated on the sly (and then I'm gaslit when I point out a difference) or just outright discontinued. So many beloved things remain unicorns, rare beauties that cannot be replaced by any kind of dupe. When it comes to fragrances that have either been discontinued or reformulated beyond recognition we get onto a whole other world of tragedy.
I remember when Stila first launched. On the flip side of the cardboard lid there would be a quote from a famous author. I remember meeting Jeanine Lobell at Saks.
@@pepperpaige203 Yes!! I remember being so charmed and delighted when I accidentally discovered the smart choice of quotes on all the different lids of my Stila shadows.
That was all I wore in highschool & college, but as smudgy eyeliner. No lips, no lashes...just "hero*ne chic" burgundy eyes. It was the 90s & it was a choice. 😂
Revlon Street Wear was the first brand that came to mind when I saw that the video was about discontinued brands. I also loved the mini Bon Bons eyeshadows when I was in High School.
The original UD mildew .. sigh. .. and yes to street wear. Even more fun, those of us who are on the very very early internet used to chat about all this I wish I knew how to reach those people
Your niche is my favorite type. An intersection of beauty/cosmetics, fashion cultural history, collections, and a true passion for what you do. I love it✨️
Thank you so much for that walk down memory lane! Makeup manufacturers should listen to the buying public. I 100% agree with the need of cool neutrals or cool bases in general in cosmetics. I feel like there was a super sale on iron oxide across the world! Love your channel!
I would visit an Erin Parsons makeup museum for sure. I love the detail you go into, I'm not a makeup person by any means (drug store girly) but I love love love watching these.
I'm a tomboy, I never wear makeup and even if I attempt it, I suck. I'll put a bit of mascara on occasionally, but there's something so comforting and enjoyable about watching Erin's visit. I adore her and Robert Welsh. They've got me feeling like a pro. I've even purchased some makeup, a mauve eyeshadow set (which I never would have attempted before) albeit I've only used it once (but it was for a night out and that happens rarely) I've wanted to experiment with makeup for years, but never had the confidence and the old UA-cam beauty gurus weren't my style (although they did beautiful lolks, they were never beginner friendly, even when it said so in the title) so I just gave up. Bug this new wave of PROFESSIONAL MUAs are a different breed and I not only love watching them, I've now got a small makeup kit and the confidence and belief in myself that I can look pretty in makeup. Although, I'm far too lazy to do it daily, I enjoy learning about makeup, even if I'll never put it to use. It's crazy as my mum was a MUA and she also watches Erin, but I only found out when she sent me a short of her Joan Collins skit (I'd already seen it, think it's called Dallas?) Anyway, how nice to know my mum and I are watching the same creator 💜🖤
This video brought back so many great memories for me! I went through multiple tubes of “blade” back in the day! I would love to see you do a video where you show Chanel’s “Vamp” on a model with very dark skin. It’s a gorgeous color on almost everyone, but on dark skin it is just incredible!
You are so adorable, right down to your smiley face tattoo on your finger, omg! Your passion for makeup and your expert artistry is unparalleled! Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
@@erinparsonsmakeupplease!! i am in distress. now that i know this has existed before it’s even more devastating that i can’t find it now!! i’ve been on a hunt for this shade foreverrr.
For an ivory matte shadow, try Maybelline ExpertWear single shadow in Linen. You’re welcome and merry Christmas!😊 My most mourned lipsticks are Estée Lauder’s spiced cider which faded beautifully. I replaced it with their not quite the same Naked Ambition which is now discontinued. Gah! In the 70’s, Revlon had a fabulous lipstick called Red Fox which was a favorite. All of these were browned reds with gold shimmer…the perfect shade for a redhead.
PLEASE keep going with this. i was born in 2000, so after most of these products were mad. however i have such strong memories of growing up in the early 2000s and my mums make up from the 90s and 2000s and watching her get ready and playing with her makeup. she had a big ginger perm as a teenager in the 80s and was a drummer in a rock band (still headbang’s round the kitchen). i also love the show ‘absolutely fabulous’ and just adore all these older products and fashions and trends. not really into any of the recent trends so please show us more!!
I love your videos so much! As a Gen X girly its fun to see all the makeup colours I remember from the 90s coming back into favour again with younger generations. My personal look was quite goth- a lightish base with no blush or contour, and heavy lashings of black indian kajal applied with a glass rod and black mascara. And eyebrows tweezed super thin! Lol. Finished off with clinique black honey or body shop honey lip balm which was a favourite 😊
14:28 YAS girl 👏🏽. Kaye 90’s-early 00’s I was a teen in my makeup era, expressing myself. I didn’t have a MAC store around me so I’d use these L’Oreal Quads. I’d use the light shade for my brow bone, use the medium for all over, then use the dark shade for my outer V & pack on the light shade across my lid. Essentially it was a cut crease but without cutting the crease. The color placement was very cautious, but intentional.
I love everything “vintage”. It’s so strange to me; I was in high school in the 90s, and we didn’t realize what we had when we were in our youth. In fact, those colors on you remind me of when Lisa Stansfield came out-I have always thought she looked so beautiful! “been around the world and I, I, I”
Exactly! INGLOT and, not eyeshadows but at least they do the job, MAC Studio Fix Foundation give me the beige and the coverage I' m looking for. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
I'm a 90s kid and watching this reminds me my mum makeup with those Chanel rouge à lèvre et blush. There was a vamp/femme fatale vibe that I loved so much on those days and the fact you got those beautiful thin eyebrows just add this nostalgia to me. I even remember the smell of Chanel N5. Those were different times that I miss. Something defenetly switch. Love watching your videos; your are so passionate and I'm always somewhere else watching them. ❤
I’m normally not that much into makeup, but at gotta says I just LOVE hearing you talk about makeup, hearing and feeling the love and passion in your voice when you talk about makeup, is just AMAZING, and I would love to see more of these videos about discounted makeup 🥰❤️❤️❤️
I love my MAC x Taraji P. Henson frost lipstick. Its old, but still smells and looks good. I actually remembered a couple of weeks ago that I still had it because of you and have been wearing it ever since.
I had a 6 pan eyeshadow palette from MAC that i got for Christmas around 1997-8. It had that beautiful matt ivory, neutral brown, burgundy, and a black. I used those shadows for over a decade. I could do just about every look in the Kevyn Aucoin books, and i did. 😊 Boy, do i regret getting rid of that pallete. I have yet to find ANYTHING that i have loved as much, even from MAC. I am a stay-at-home mom of 3 in my 40s, so i didn't get the chance to play like i used to. That is why i LOVE your videos, Erin! You scratch that itch and remind me that make-up is FUN! You should really bring back some of those 90s shades. And maybe let me come play with your make-up with you. LOL, I used to do that with my younger sisters and had so much fun. I miss that! Thank you for another great video! Sending you lots of love❤❤
Omg, you are an inspiration. You are all the things I love rolled into one person: 1930s Hollywood, Biba, and Liza as Sally Bowles. I bow deep, indeed.
Love this return. Yeah, at first, these tones were bizarre to me but, especially the flesh tone one and the silver, you make it work in ways that make me think of arthouse science fiction movies. Those book palettes are lovely too. Surprised they don’t make products like that much anymore.
Omg thank you! I thought it was just me. Not loving how lipstick looks on me but now it seems its all mostly warms tones. Would love to see a cool tone collection haul. 🙌
I remember when they discontinued Taupe. I tried a NYX "dupe" and it just wasnt the same. I still mourn it, I am a martyr for Taupe. It was just the perfect gentle contour shade for fair to light skin. Ugh. Jail, MAC. JAIL
those library color books are everything! WOW! I'm highly melanated so lipsticks like fleshpot and those pale liners wouldn't exactly be my first pick but I seriously admire their tone and application. I love these videos!
Wondering if you have any Aveda makeup from the 90’s? My mom worked at the Aveda factory in Minnesota and got to take home a bunch of Aveda makeup. I LOVED the eyeshadows. The green eyeshadows in particular. Then there was the powder in the silver clamshell compact, it was on the cover of the Everything But the Girl album and it became quite popular.
this is such a cool video and i assume as a makeup artists you are accustomed to using designer & professional brands but GIRL!! there are tons of brands with similar products today!! brown lashes - looks that thrill unique undertone lip shades - black moon cosmetics, sushyglow, vinyl cosmetics unique single eyeshadows - urban decay, half magic that one lip liner - morphe, urban decay, wet n wild matte ivory - in the morphe 9T palette (my personal fave, i have gone through 4 so far and that shade is always first to hit pan. the ivory in the 9V is more cool toned & about a shade and a half lighter so it's probably better for your skin tone). those smaller morphe palettes also have a similar purpose to the il makiage books: the color story is exactly what you need for the look, no scrambling required they may not be the quality you need for clients but for a fun look at home there ARE modern dupes
Erin, I don’t know a thing about makeup but you in your videos make it look so fascinating and exciting. I feel like I’m on an exotic journey around the world, past and present, every time I watch. Thank you for allowing me to indulge.
I’m a collector of all things vintage books, dishes, home décor, and perfumes. My love for vintage treasures started with perfumes (1980s commercial bottles). I adore learning about the ingredients that go into creating a scent. ❤ Recently, while rummaging through my hoarded stack of makeup, I discovered a Lancôme eyeshadow from the late ’80s to early ’90s named White Gold. It’s such a stunning shade, perfect for nighttime holiday parties or a romantic date night or just because…❤❤ I absolutely love your content, by the way! I swear they don’t look like this in short form. The camera helps them out! Even surprised
Me 😂
19:51 Try Necromancy Cosmetica and/or Abomination cosmetics. 🤎🤍🖤
I literally paused the video and RAN over to check out these brands on IG! The lipsticks from Necromancy are definitely giving the 90s vibe!
I am 52, I really miss vamp lipstick and the original poison perfume. 😊
Me too! I also miss the original Chloe and the discontinued NOA 😢They should relaunch Vamp as well.
I'm 52, too, and same!
Oh yes. Dior Poison.
Did you know the original Poison bottles (empty) are actually highly collectable.
I have an original bottle and omg 🤤
@@skylilly1we still have noa from cacharel in germany!
I miss Scarlett from them !
I LOVE that Vamp lipstick that you put on. It reminds me of the color I was addicted to back in my day and beyond called Cherry Jubilee from Avon. It’s a very close dupe to Vamp.
There’s no one like you, Erin. If you can, please make this a multi part series. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I LOVE your perfume descriptions omg it’s like being teleported into another world
That nosferatu really took me on a theatrical journey 😆
OKKK the way those brown fake lashes made your eyes poppp is just another level ❤
The brown lashes are INCREDIBLE
we need these videos to be at least 1 hour long! hands down you are one of the most interesting makeup lovers and artists on the internet, i don't even wear makeup but i'm so fascinated by all the discontinued and rare gems that you always present to us.
16:38 so adorable❤. I missed your long videos, cannot wait for others to come (that plum lipstick looks divine)
I’ll def do a part two!
I swear girl has so much aura I'd be too shy to look her in the eyes regardless the sweet person she is 💝💝
Awwww adore you!!
Revlon Street Wear was amazing and I miss the lip pencils and lipstick in “Blood” Urban Decay has a dupe called Gash.
I loved Streetwear 😳
I've even purchased some makeup, a mauve eyeshadow set (which I never would have attempted before) albeit I've only used it once (but it was for a night out and that happens rarely)
I've wanted to experiment with makeup for years, but never had the confidence and the old UA-cam beauty gurus weren't my style (although they did beautiful lolks, they were never beginner friendly, even when it said so in the title) so I just gave up.
It's crazy as my mum was a MUA and she also watches Erin, but I only found out when she sent me a short of her Joan Collins skit (I'd already seen it, think it's called Dallas?)
Anyway, how nice to know my mum and I are watching the same creator 💜🖤
This video brought back so many great memories for me! I went through multiple tubes of “blade” back in the day! I would love to see you do a video where you show Chanel’s “Vamp” on a model with very dark skin. It’s a gorgeous color on almost everyone, but on dark skin it is just incredible!
You are so adorable, right down to your smiley face tattoo on your finger, omg! Your passion for makeup and your expert artistry is unparalleled! Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
Love the cool tones! Need more cool toned makeup for sure
I love that chanel blush oh my! Please update us on a dupe if you find it 😍
I am on the hunt 🕵🏻♀️
@@erinparsonsmakeupplease!! i am in distress. now that i know this has existed before it’s even more devastating that i can’t find it now!! i’ve been on a hunt for this shade foreverrr.
I still have my Rimmel Black Cherry lipsticks from the 90's and I love them. They still look gorgeous too.
Best colour that suited everyone❤
For an ivory matte shadow, try Maybelline ExpertWear single shadow in Linen. You’re welcome and merry Christmas!😊 My most mourned lipsticks are Estée Lauder’s spiced cider which faded beautifully. I replaced it with their not quite the same Naked Ambition which is now discontinued. Gah! In the 70’s, Revlon had a fabulous lipstick called Red Fox which was a favorite. All of these were browned reds with gold shimmer…the perfect shade for a redhead.
Spiced Cider was so good!
17:47 they compliment ur eyes so well and it actually looks good with the rest of the makeup 😊
Can I just sayyy, this gothic chic Bettie Page look is serving , it’s giving, it’s iconic yas , she’s a star , she’s an icon, Erin Parsons is back
😂 adore you and Thankyou!!!
I LOVE YOU ERIN!!! thank you for all the amazing content and makeup history.
Love you back! Thankyou for the kind words 🤗!!
“been around the world and I, I, I”
It makes my museum professional heart sing to see how well you store your pieces. I can’t wait to visit the museum some day when it opens!
Yay! Erin is back!
It has been a minute 😅 always on the other apps but if tiktok gets banned I’ll focus on only longform
Your earrings are just amazing.
I think the brand is called lahellec 🥰
I'm absolutely in love with that Chanel vamp lipstick! 😍😍😍
I recently found the Milani cream blush that has insane pigment, but melts into the skin with a sponge - making it look as though it's from within
That vamp blush is stunning !!
I still have my vamp lipstick, blush and nail polish ! ❤
I love how knowledgeable and passionate you are about makeup and beauty in general. So happy to see you back again ❤
YES!!! Where are the ivory matte shadows??? You don’t even have to put in a palette. Just sell me a single. PLEASE!!
If you can get Inglot in your country, they do bomb mattes. I use 351 in almost all of my makeup looks, it's the perfect ivory!
Exactly! INGLOT and, not eyeshadows but at least they do the job, MAC Studio Fix Foundation give me the beige and the coverage I' m looking for. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
I am just obsessed with Erin's voice, could hear her talking for days
I'm a 90s kid and watching this reminds me my mum makeup with those Chanel rouge à lèvre et blush. There was a vamp/femme fatale vibe that I loved so much on those days and the fact you got those beautiful thin eyebrows just add this nostalgia to me.
I even remember the smell of Chanel N5. Those were different times that I miss. Something defenetly switch.
Love watching your videos; your are so passionate and I'm always somewhere else watching them. ❤
Yes please, please, please do more of these videos Erin, I absolutely love them ❤ you warm the cockles of this make up loving history freak’s heart.x
i would love to see more parts!!! its so interesting and i love your tastes ⭐️
Omg the brown lashes are stunning
The brown lashes with that lip color and your eyes are popping so beautifully!! Best way to make your eyes color pop so beautiful!!
Chanel Vamp is everything! Love you girl ❤
I love my MAC x Taraji P. Henson frost lipstick. Its old, but still smells and looks good. I actually remembered a couple of weeks ago that I still had it because of you and have been wearing it ever since.
See I say don’t use but hey if it still smells good 😂 usually it is good
There’s just something about those 90s Mac lipsticks 🤩🤩
I totally get what you’re saying, the silver was bizarre and yet I couldn’t stop staring but for sure felt science fiction 😆
Beautiful and nostalgic. You nailed the Naomi Campbell 90s lip. I miss them.
I would love to watch a video where you explain your journey with make up, both professionally and amateur
Love this idea! Will do!
I typically fast forward through sponsor ads, but not Erin’s. She’s so intriguing and genuine, she can sell me anything!
Omg thank you! I thought it was just me. Not loving how lipstick looks on me but now it seems its all mostly warms tones. Would love to see a cool tone collection haul. 🙌
Yes please more videos the longer the better. I'm obsessed ❤❤❤
I’m truly considering stopping short form. I don’t have enough time to fully investigate one subject. Then I could film here weekly!
@erinparsonsmakeup That would be amazing I'm there for that for sure. Your passion is infectectious 🥰
YESSS ANYDAY ERIN POSTS IS THE BEST!!
Love you 😂
I remember when they discontinued Taupe. I tried a NYX "dupe" and it just wasnt the same. I still mourn it, I am a martyr for Taupe. It was just the perfect gentle contour shade for fair to light skin. Ugh. Jail, MAC. JAIL
Taupe’s lesser known sister was Strada. I still mourn her as well.
👏
Marc Jacobs had an eyeshadow that looked and performed the same. HAD😫😭😭😭
I still have a big pro pan of Taupe. I’m sparing when I use it!
@@d3pr0fundisand Cubic…bless her.
I love watching you show us your eclectic and historical makeup collection! I subscribe to you on every platform.
those library color books are everything! WOW! I'm highly melanated so lipsticks like fleshpot and those pale liners wouldn't exactly be my first pick but I seriously admire their tone and application. I love these videos!
Yes! Part 2,3,4!!! Please!!!!
I don’t but I have heard from others how good it was too! I’ll definitely search for some 🤩
I like to pretend in a parallel universe that we are besties😊 and you are my beautiful, stylish, unique makeup bestie. Your personality is tres chic.
this is such a cool video and i assume as a makeup artists you are accustomed to using designer & professional brands but GIRL!! there are tons of brands with similar products today!!
brown lashes - looks that thrill
unique undertone lip shades - black moon cosmetics, sushyglow, vinyl cosmetics
unique single eyeshadows - urban decay, half magic
that one lip liner - morphe, urban decay, wet n wild
matte ivory - in the morphe 9T palette (my personal fave, i have gone through 4 so far and that shade is always first to hit pan. the ivory in the 9V is more cool toned & about a shade and a half lighter so it's probably better for your skin tone). those smaller morphe palettes also have a similar purpose to the il makiage books: the color story is exactly what you need for the look, no scrambling required
they may not be the quality you need for clients but for a fun look at home there ARE modern dupes
I thought I hated dark liner with light/frosty lips but this time around it looks so dope. I think I was just mad that Carmen Electra existed.
I don’t think I fully appreciated such
Dark liner in my youth but why I love it so much today 😆
OMG YES FINALLY ANOTHER VIDEOOO
Woooo! I have so much more to share! 🤗!
WAKE UP EVERYBODY THE QUEEN IS BACK
You guys are so amazing 😂 🤗
When you tied everything together with the lashes you eye color POPPED. Gorgeous
all the cosmetics you want (like in the 90's) are available in russia, under local brands shik pencil: garda, genova, romanova make up palette:))
A Beauty in Houndstooth. ❤
Aww that is sweet! Little number from Norma kamali with matching tights 🤩
going to cosmo school because of you ❤️
Oh wow! I’m honored 🤗!
Love this Chanel 💕💕
Thanks for being here 🤗!
Recently, while rummaging through my hoarded stack of makeup, I discovered a Lancôme eyeshadow from the late ’80s to early ’90s named White Gold. It’s such a stunning shade, perfect for nighttime holiday parties or a romantic date night or just because…❤❤ I absolutely love your content, by the way! It’s so inspiring to see others share such a passion for vintage treasures. 😘✨
