    I just can't get over how much better Prof. L is when compared to 99.9% of my teachers thus far ( junior year of college majoring in engineering physics). My calc 3 prof. said the other day to stay away from youtube because it, "will just confuse you", and I straight up wanted to laugh in his face. Prof. L was groomed for this and it shows. The theory he ensures to lay out before embarking on examples and application is the prelude to understanding and he does it well. What's more is that he writes down the most concise of sentences that really crystallize the concepts he aims to convey. Alas, the only thing I feel I'm missing is more time to watch his lectures.

    • @ergar90
      @ergar90 2 роки тому +10

      We are missing time because we are stuck in hours of lectures each week that don't make sense to us. I have to spend so many extra hours learning all the stuff I should have learned in my lectures. Turns out the stuff is actually pretty easy when taught properly.

      I very much disagree. This is something I learned from my own personal experience. I am not reciting what others are saying. There is much more to classroom than home study. Doesn't mean you have to go every day, but you do need to go to classroom.

    • @koober_
      @koober_ 7 років тому +10

      Perhaps attending the classroom isn't as mandatory as you may think, but I do agree that it is a good idea to go anyway. I've found that maximizing the sources of information is never a bad thing. I attend my calc 3 lectures daily, then in the morning before the next class I just watch the same topic from professor Leonard's perspective. By doing so I can pick and choose whose methods I like better.
      For example, I've found my own professors methods of graphing cylinders and surfaces much less memory-intensive, so I use his for that, but I found professor Leonard's method of _identifying_ the graphs much better. I also almost always prefer professor Leonard's explanations of concepts, as he is good at explaining complicating concepts in a simple and visual way. It just gives a better all-around understanding if you supplement both forms of instruction.

    I like how Professor Leonard actually tells the students when a certain type of example problem will be on their test. This is a great way to make them want to pay attention, since they can pretty much get free points if they learn to solve those specific problems. I think that he has said that about 3-4 times in this playlist up to this point.

But then I realized that I was weak at “algebra ” and ”trigonometry”, and so I found you and I completed the “pre-calculus” course, then I moved on with calculus 1&2 and I actually enjoyed the ride and I am enjoying it now as well, learning calculus 3.

    From day one of working in 3 dimensions, I have always asked why the axis are arranged the way they are (with x going into/out of the board, y being on the boards horizontal axis, and z going up and down) as opposed to keeping x and y as they were in 2 dimensions and making the z axis go into/out of the board, and I have never gotten an explanation beyond "that's the standard convention" from any of my professors. I had honestly come to accept that, but I still was never really satisfied with it. And then at around 4:18 to 4:25 Professor Leonard comes in and in just 7 seconds I now completely understand the reasoning behind this. It doesn't really change anything in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't lead to any immediately obvious applications, but this new piece of knowledge has scratched a mental itch that was buried so deep that I had nearly forgotten it was there, but the satisfaction of finally having an explanation feels almost enlightening.

    I like to think of 4D as an infinite number of parallel 3D spaces.
    So for example if I want to walk through a solid wall then I could enter another 3D space and then move forward in that space, then go back to my own space again and appear on the other side of the door.
    Basically, it's like imagining 3D spaces as flat planes that lie stacked on each other.

    I always write a 3D multivariable function as "z(x,y)".
    This gives me the dependent variable AND the independent variables all at once.
