Hey Ken, I have a question that is not related to this video. I'm in a wheelchair and I can't find videos on how to train your dog if your are in a wheelchair. If you could make a video on this that would be great. I have a huskie, he is nine months old if that matters.

This video, along with the potty training one, probably saved my relationship with my pup. We got Samson 2 weeks ago and Ive been just complete sapped of energy because he takes so much time to watch and even with a close eye he often messed in the house. In 48h of following a better schedule, using a crate more wisely, and being intentional with high/low energy exercises Im already seeing a massive change in Sammy. Maybe Im fooling myself, but it feels like a different dog. The biggest change too is with me! Im not so stressed about "what is the dog doing now?" and can focus when I eat, do chores, etc. I can even sit down long enough to write a whole youtube comment!!

how is he in the crate?! we're struggling hard with crate training our pup, she just hates being locked in there. she sleeps and plays in it willingly a lot as long as the door is not closed - once we close its like she's being tortured 😭

@@MafaldadeSousaMacie My puppy absolutely hated the crate like 2 days ago. Now all of the sudden he started to like his crate overnight. I'm still puzzled on how he went from despising the crate to loving it????

    • @PlanoFool
      @PlanoFool 3 роки тому +18

@@MafaldadeSousaMacie put stuff in the crate that she likes, especially a chew, like a pig ear. Only give the special treat in the crate. She'll learn that good things are in the crate and she'll learn to like it. Don't give in to her complaining. You need to give her a reason to want to be in the crate. Talk in a calming voice. In our case, our crate has a secure water cup, so our pup knows he can get a drink whenever he likes. Just gotta know that if he whimpers, that's a sign he wants to go out and pee/poo.

We (including the two grandkids) began watching the puppy videos a couple of months before we picked up our puppy. We brought Bailey home in July 2020. We loaded the car with all the items Kayl mentioned in the "Bringing Your Puppy Home" video. We continued watching the UA-cam videos. They helped us with crate and potty training (she had a total of 3 accidents, all due to inattention to her hints). Then Ken mentioned that, while the videos were great, they were vanilla compared to the online courses McCann offers. So we signed up for those, when Bailey was 5 months old. Wow! Those Zoom calls and the course work have got us through some rough times with our Miss Bailey. She's 8 1/2 months old now, and beginning to settle down so she can hang out with us for longer periods of time, thanks to the advice on playing brain games. She loves them and they tire her out! A tired dog is a resting dog! We have her on a line when she's out of her crate, a piece of advice that has kept us and Bailey from making too many mistakes, and something we never knew of before McCann's. This is a big thank you and shout out to anyone out there struggling with a puppy or older dog. McCann's is the best.

This whole video is really great. I'd love to see this as a series as a puppy progresses and then some different schedules for a dog too.
At what stage do you introduce the words for the commands instead of just lures? With "shake a paw" it seems to be only once it's going well (couldn't really tell why you think that is going well but not the sit either)? So a few days of reps without a command before a command is introduced?

Trick training is another great transferable skill. Like im really slack at teaching wait or stay. again if inherited a dog with a specific skill set. But she will do on the box, which means jump on something, could be a bench, drain cover, shes learnt through 101 things to do with a box, or is learning to check the enviroment for a box.

You have so many videos that this might already exist but if not, can you make a video about what a vocabulary for a trained dog looks like? What commands can be used for similar situations we humans differentiates but are similar for dogs, what situations can be tackled with which commands. What commands should a dog know?
I ski a lot, so on top of good leash behaviour in a city, I want to have line-out, pull/go, whoha. I still want my dog to go trecking with me in the summer, probably in the same harness. Later with a backpack (what are they called for dogs?).
I know I can stop bad situations by removing myself, distracting, performing sits, etc. but let's say a ‘gee’ or ‘haw’ is enough to defuse a potential situation. That way I can show my dog what to do, and we can move on. I know this is advanced territory, but I feel there is a transition from avoiding problems to coping with them that I'm not really sure about.
Also: with commands like ‘okay’, I still want my dog to make good decisions. How can I balance being alert with relaxation? I see you say specifically ‘go get it’, how does that translate to training ‘leave it’? Are you always that alert yourselves or is it only during training that's allowed?
In an ideal world you'd give me a Norwegian vocabulary, but I'll have to discuss that with a local puppy trainer.

In two ways I'm going to get my little poodle and i wonder if you guys have an idea for replacement of the crate for an other space and how to keep the puppy settled in a spot that's bigger than a crate? Excited to see if you guys have a good take on this question! Kind regards from Sweden!

I plan on teaching his name & hand jesture during the 3.5 hour ride home without treat but praise. We have potty breaks every hour planned. when we get home plan on intro to my older kids then a bit of training for his "bedroom" (crate). Over night every 2 hours potty break. @@allywilkeforsenate so odd to make a political statement out of this video. But to your point: most domesticated dogs do not resemble their ancestors who are pack hunters. Many hunting dogs are not also living in houses, they're kept outside in kennels. And most domesticated house dogs are not built for hunting nor do they have the drive to do so. So that's kind of a silly comparison. An english bulldog for example, is not going out hunting with people. Dogs have become companion animals for the majority of people.

I've had dogs all my life and never have I found an easier way of training than your video's. Like many other comments, I'm amazed that there is no charge for this awesome information. Can't thank you enough for that! We are preparing for our first ever Great Dane on Sunday, October 10 and with this size dog, training is even more essential than before. I know it's not going to be easy by any meaning of the word, however, your video's make it seem so doable. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge in such great detail! But unbelievably, he was perfectly behaved in the car, playful and loving to all of us! And he slept like a babe, I didn’t know there could be such an angelic puupp❤️🙏🏻

Yeah you got lucky lol my 8wk old hated his crate for the first week and couldn't be lured in. He still goes to the toilet indoors after a week and a half. He still bites and gets agressive if you try to hold his collar or discipline him. He pulls, he jumps and refuses to listen most of the time.
Does does react to his name when not distracted, he does a few commands when there is food involved. Sit, down, crate and he's starting to pick up on stay.

Thank you soooooooo much for your vids. I just adopted a 9wk old boxer/lab mix about 3 wks ago, and I've been figuring I've made a HUGE mistake for most of that time, because I'm exhausted trying to keep up with training and potty training and keeping this high energy dog healthy (I'm pretty low energy, myself). He's a great, smart dog that's learned a lot of commands, already (I was even able to have lunch over at my mom's house with a friend while he patiently waited on a blanket with some toys, near me). I've watched a ton of training vids, and I feel like they were helpful to give me confidence to start out with--but your guys' vids are so thorough and I really appreciate the emphasis not being on treats when they poop or for long-term (thankfully, my pup started out being more enthused about praise, and is just now becoming about as interested in treats...otherwise I totally would have been leashed to treats) Anyway, I'd decided to try to start crating him while I'm home a little more often becasue of continued accidents in the house (I also use a puppy pad at night next to his crate in a makeshift playpen); but was unsure how much to do it or how to implement it. Today, watching your vids, gave me the confidence needed to crate him regularly between potty/training breaks; and we both seem the better for it. I watched more of your vids during his "downtime". I'm learning to change my position when I play with him so that he doesn't think it's okay to bite me and was able to get him to follow me around the house using peanut butter as the lure (that's his fav treat). I'm going to try to crate him completely, without puppy pads, for the first time tonight; and hope that I don't have to make too many trips outside during the night. But I'm hoping that this new routine will be the start of an even healthier relationship with my dog (and him with the interior of the house). He's already a great dog! I just needed help in providing the additional structure he needs. Thanks for that!!
