Hi, I just bought your app on my "sofa iPad" to check it out, looks great, exactly what I need to help me get a more consistent and developing practice routine. However, I also grabbed some add-ons, and everything looks okay BUT when install and open the app on my "Keyboard Lab iPad", the add-ons are not accounted for and the "buy" buttons are displayed.... HELP! (And yes, I only have one and the same Apple ID/Account that I use for all my apple devices, the app opens up correctly, available under my "purchased apps" etc. in the app store on all my devices.)
@@mDecksMusic Thanks for your swift and prompt reply! Oh, wow, I didn't see that button (iPad attached in landscape mode in the keyboard stand..). Super! Can't wait to get started with this, again thanks!
@@mDecksMusic this is a great exercise, thanks for this! Question: Do we always have to go back and start from Step 1? I've been doing this on "On Green Dolphin Street" and can play Step 1 fairly easily but Steps 2 through 7 are taking more time. I haven't felt the chord tones come out in my playing yet on the bandstand. Can I begin on Step 2? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
This is a beautiful, elegant, and extremely profound 7 steps to learning how to improvise! I wish that I was taught such a method when I played trumpet in middle and high school! As an educator of music theory, it does not take long to understand that this method greatly reinforces every objective we hope to share with our students! Thanks very much for sharing this! 👑💯🎯🎉♥️🤯🎂
As a beginner on piano coming from guitar it blows my mind how much mental work is done in real time, seemingly effortlessly, and all I can do is keep practicing and hoping to get there.
I hear you, although not so different from guitar (just new patterns to learn). The thing that blows my mind is coordinating two hands. I'm loving it though - hope to apply a lot of this to guitar.
Your graduated stepwise progression allowed me to surprise myself with how well I could play/improvise! Thank you so much for this - I’ll be practicing it daily.
THANK YOU. being a Classical pianist,,in my senior years..(been there , through there..the saying goes) ,,WHAT HAS been missing in my own musical life...is LEARNING properly jazz...and non-classical ways...which i always admired very much. i could use your adivice to "teach" myself again...and help kids learn...:'LET S LEARN GOOD MUSIC TOGETHER" I would say...your lesson is wonderful
This is exactly what I needed!!!!!!! A step by step process that is well structured with very precise goals. I cannot thank you enough for this. It's time to put in the hardwork. I will definitely be sharing my progress on UA-cam once I feel confident enough.
This was the first of your vids I discovered which led to many more of your lessons. This one is amazing how much this has helped my 'anticipation' and flow! Learning to hear the target note(s) before the transition is challenging but really contributes to the smoothness and economy of movement! As always, thanks!
First of all, mDecks love your piano playing -- and approach to music and prowess of improvisation. Your 7 step exercise is revolutionary - I understand the musical concepts and reasoning behind this exercise .. getting out my clarinet and putting this wisdom into immediate effect! Thank you.
I've been looking for a system like this thanks very much. I am currently working on improving my performance and i will try this method to see if it helps.
Thank you for that! I saw this at work. I can't wait to get home and practice it. Something I'd really LOVE to learn how to do well is to take a standard church him, or contemporary praise and worship song and make it sound jazzy. Long story short, I attend a Christian Reformed Church (formerly Dutch Reformed) because I believe it is the most "theologically correct". I came to that conclusion by reading lots of books on theology. Before that, however, I attended different churches and played piano in a Pentecostal church. I have an ongoing joke about being Christian reformed in a Pentecostal body. (I'm not at all trying to start a theological debate here or convince anyone. I just want to learn to play jazz. ) A good example is "Go tell in on the Mountain". I know there are many jazz arrangements I can learn from just reading the music. But generally speaking, I'd like to be able to take a standard tune and play it jazzy. How do I do that or where can I learn? Please advise!
Now that's a pretty good exercise. Structured but flexible, if done at all consistently very likely to help you get around the keyboard better. Wouldn't do me a bit of harm, I'm pretty sure. Well done and thanks.
wow that was cool. I am a self taught player I need to figure out how to do more standards I can see the chords but I got to climb a long way to get there so im looking forward. great exercise
This is a splendid extercise, i think, for piano. Ive found, however, that i struggle a little bit on instruments with a more limited range, such as saxophone. Here i tend to drop out a lot, when i focus on up-down/ down-up. This happens, because i need to think about not running out of instrument. I've found that in these cases, it's an appropriate modification to take the range into consideration and switch directions, when the instruments asks for it, try to play continuously up and down the register and try to stay with the chords.
6:20: "The challenge here is that we have to start thinking about the next chord while playing the current chord. Not easy." Actually it is very easy, because while we have to start thinking about the next chord, we no longer have to keep thinking about the current chord (except for the left hand perhaps, but it's basically already done its thing for the current chord). It doesn't matter how dissonant the anticipating enclosure notes are to the current chord, and in fact, the more dissonant the better as a general rule. So you need only think about one chord at any one time. Easy.
@@mDecksMusic I guess I can't recall what it was like at the beginning. But I meant to point out to anyone just learning it that by beat 4 (or even 3½) they can disregard the current chord and focus exclusively on enclosing the chord note of the next chord. Nice exercises.
This is excellent, thank you.. I wish young people would take an interest in standard tunes, the American Songbook. By the way shouldn't bar 83 in the enclosures section have a Gflat for the C half diminished chord?
Thanks for this great lesson! I would like to practice other standards with this method. What app/program did you use to create this exercise sheet? Is it even possible with tonal harmony pro? thanks!

This is one of the best things I've ever read on UA-cam, perhaps ever. ❤

Just missing the explanation about the left hand that goes to do more than just playing the root notes.

Enjoyed listening to this as music in its own right - like the beginning of Rachmaninov concerto movement!
Will definitely be giving it a go.

This guy's amazing
Good
All the musicians must be able to do that !!
This is brilliant
Thank you very much brother
Great didactic thinking.
Great video thanks !
Amazing!! Thank you!!
Great exercise, thanks you! Btw at 6:19 you meant E flat, right?
You mean, the key? No, it should be Bb. Remember that the Eb is functioning as the IV chord at the moment.
Olá sou iniciante no teclado gostei muito de sua aula, obrigado
I like it. Cheers
Excellent
Thanks for this great lesson! I would like to practice other standards with this method. What app/program did you use to create this exercise sheet? Is it even possible with tonal harmony pro? thanks!
I use sibelius and do it by hand, with Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro you can create the target notes exercises but not this one.
This is a great exercise
What if you have a a chord for four bars consecutively?
I guess you can repeat the sequence
That's fair. 😅 I was just thinking maybe as you go up you do inversions sooner on that one chord. But I got you, thank you! Great channel!
Hello sir, can you please make some jazz piano tutorials for beginners. It will help us lot. Thank you
