I think Locarno's plan was to have an unaffiliated Starfleet to go on missions and gain a reputation as saviors. In the end he just wanted glory and was denied it since he was kicked out

That is what it came to me as well. However it was pointed out to me they are basically Space Libertarians.

I thought it was an excellent finale, with a lot of great gags, and a fun resolution to the various season arcs! Very fun opening with the 'First Duty' cast coming back (including Wes Crusher).

I really enjoyed seeing Mariner be full Starfleet. If she can finally move past her personal issues, she can be a legend in the quadrant.
And the idea that Twaining actually works to settle disputes is wonderful.

The fact that they spoofed not only ST 2 Wrath of Khan and the sleeper scifi Titan AE. love it bigtime!

this episode had epic scope, for the first time they used like season-wide-payoffs to different things which felt nice and impressive action too. they almost had a Holdo-maneuver like visual which was the most unique visual star wars had since...last millenium

I was bought back to the 90’s when they did the recap from part 1 and then they said and now the conclusion. Also it was nice to see Sito Jaxxa

A nebula is the source and origin of an entire solar system, including the star, not only one planet. The planet is only one part, the potentially habitable part located in the "Goldilocks zone "which one would assume, in scifi style, would be programmed into the Genesis device's matrix.

alternate ending... Tom Parris walks onto the bridge, everybody shouts "It's Lacarno" and a number of people draw their phasers and incinerate Tom.....or just maybe a bunch of heavy stun!

Concerning Class M planets being in the habitable zone, let be direct you to Rigel 4, Rigel 5, Rigel 7, Rigel 10, and Rigel 12.

20:30 One solution to this issue I can think of is that the Goldilocks zone isn't a fixed thing, it changes depending on planetary conditions. So perhaps the genesis device is capable of working out what conditions are necessary for the planet it's on (thicker atmosphere, specialized biochemistry, etc.) and it does its best to produce a habitable world from there. It'd have its limits, but that'd at least sufficiently explain the issue laid out here for me.

Latinum to start the countdown would be silly as the latinum wouldn’t survive the explosion.

This was set up in a way where it could function as a series finale.

    "People are allowed to mutiny"
Maybe on Klingon ships. Most other fleets tend to look down on that kind of behaviour.

Goverment paid for those ships. You dont want to follow the goverment, fine, but they're taking their stuff back.

I really liked the steamrunner ships. bombing enemy stations with tricobalt charges was fun. and they had insane range. sure, the romulans had a similar ship with the same weapon, but cloaking is overrated. ;-)
    I should play armada again.

Re: how quick one could make Captain... I was just watching "The Pegasus" and while they may have erred in the writing, it was only supposed to be 12 years prior and Riker was an ensign at the time. Which means that Riker went from ensign to commander in approx 5 years? Ish? And then was offered his own command roughly 3 years after that (in "Best of Both Worlds")? Though again, I think it may have been sloppy writing in "The Pegasus"

regarding mariner and being captain: there is this lingering idea of star trek legacy.
a captain mariner would fit, and without hurting mariners path in lower decks.

20:41 I’m gonna say that tectonic heat is part of the genesis process. There may be a process going on underground causing enough tectonic friction to heat the planet.

Genesis device regenerates his body per ST:III, then time travel, adoption by Admiral Paris = Tom Paris. They actually are the same person.

When Spock got mixed with the Genesis device it made a new Spock right along with the planet? So does a new Locarno get made here? Some sort of Paris lookalike explanation at some point?

I enjoyed the episode quite a bit. Especially the paywalled bomb.
Like most episodes, there are some things that feel a little off for me. Like the premise for Nova Fleet and why was Boimler made acting captain instead of Jack?

    • @wendyheatherwood

Freeman wanted her command crew for the rescue mission. In the end all they had to do was fly in beam Mariner out and fly off again, but they didn't know that going in, so it makes sense she'd want to take her best people.

where is it indicated that you enter starfleet academy at 18? That seems to link it to the US-based school system.
