I would love to see you two analyze "Introduction," the first song on their first album, "Chicago Transit Authority." THAT is merely THE greatest song in the history of rock-n-roll.
Chicago toured a few years ago highlighting Chicago II and played most of the cuts from this album. Imagine, going into the studio to practice and bringing these songs back to life! That lead opening vocal by Terry Kath is irreplaceable, however. He was an amazing guitarist and singer. Bluesy, rock and powerful was his vocal performance. I also have to do a shout out to Walt Parazaider on flute. What amazing 'chops'! I do have a bias, since I played flute all of my youth and much of my adult life. His amazing jazz style stands out with vocal/grunt and playing combined...."Help help!"...that was Walt. Terry's guitar riffs and vocals are like a story..."What's going down...can't you take the time to feel what is real!" Imagine, this was Viet Nam era music and has relevance even today. Then, the horns are arranged into the song with the guitar solo. Then, the incredible ending...."It better end soon!"
And including the entire culture changes going on during the 60s, specifically in America. From this song you can hear how funk and R&B influenced these boys from the streets of Chicago (Keyboard player Robert Lamm was born in Brooklyn but raised in Chicago. He's the one that called Terry Kath "The white Ray Charles" for Terry's soulful voice). Terry was a talent taken from us far too soon. R.I.P. Terry Alan Kath.

"doo-doo-doo-doo-do" horn beat is meant to be a machine gun. This song was written/recorded as protests against the Vietnam War were really rising into a crescendo.
The grunting and screaming with the flute was not Terry Kath but was actually Walt Parazaider vocalizing as he was playing the flute. If you listen to the whole album in sequence this song was preceded by another 4 movement suite, "Prelude", "AM Mourning", "PM Mourning" and "Memories of Love" where Terry is singing about losing his love to death. It's very pretty and somber, then you're awaken by the funky desperation in this song. The contrast is great. I love Chicago II because it offers so much to hear and experience. Chicago themselves have never been able to outdo the genius of this great album.

Keep in mind I am o;d enough to be your grandfather, and was listening to this stuff before parenting your own parents!
The early 70's were a time of such tension, a war, a draft, racism, rampant violence. TK captured that in those introductory chords as did the horn harmonies, then a few more bars of it in PC's bass. Not to mention the lyrics! These guys were brilliant at capturing the emotions of whatever motivated given songs.
I wonder if the flute solo with the screams and the shouts of "help!" are also a reference to something similar Sam Rivers did with Cecil Taylor in 1969 - the difference is that SR's mid-solo screams sounded convincingly like someone being whipped.
The final cut coming up is again - as different as it can be from what you just heard. Peter is the vocalist and there is on huge band element nowhere to be found on it (won’t give it away) but let’s just say it is a simple and fitting coda to a very satisfying and complex album. It also asks a timeless question. Where do we go from here?
