You were referring to CSN's "Suite Judy Blue Eyes".

Definitely has some serious CSN vibes.

This is so fascinating. It’s great to see 2 young people stare into the camera, drink a beverage, and talk about an album that came out before they were born.By the way, that folky group the woman referred to was CSN.

Seraphine at the drums opens the door to sheer visceral funk .
Stan Kenton's Big Band covered this era of Chicago's work , with Maestro Peter Erskine at the drums ...a worthy cover .

Chicago III was very experimental after the huge success of Chicago (often called Chicago II though it was not numbered, it was their second album with Chicago Transit Authority being their first). Another amusing suite on Chicago III is "An Hour In The Shower" with Terry kath singing the majority of lead vocals. Terry sang lead on "Free" which you played here.
I'm really digging that you are enjoying your experience with classic Chicago before they became a ballad band after Terry Kath's death. This is my all-time favorite band from my youth.

I love that you're getting in to old Chicago stuff. The first 10 or 11 albums are classic. You should go to Chicago VI and listen to "What's This World Coming To?". Awesome horns and terrific vocals!!

You're right, Gene. "What's This World Coming To?" is one of those songs where they rotated the lead vocals three ways among Robert, Peter, and Terry. Not many bands had that luxury! And have you ever checked out an online video clip featuring Terry's "isolated" rhythm guitar part on that song? Oh my Lord, it's incredible, and a real shame that it ended up getting buried in the final mix as it did.

Wow! You played the whole travel suite. "Free" was the single. Haven't heard that whole suite in ages.

I always thought that Flight 602 was about running to Canada to avoid the draft. Then the cacophony of the dum solo, which i believe is whimsically titled "Motorboat to Mars " (in case Canada isn't far enough away?) and finally the catharsis, "I just wanna be free!"

A lot of comparison's, and rightly so, to Crosby, Stills, and Nash. But that country peddle steel?(that can be played on a guitar?)flashed me onto a song by Fleetwood Mac called "Sometime". Wonderful song imo.

First, thank you for putting up theses songs. As a point of order. "Flight 602" is a stand alone song. The drum solo intro to "Free" is actually titled "Motorboat to Mars". Having written all of that, thank you for these songs.

That was unexpected! Whimsy, harmonies, made me think of 'Rubber Soul' or something more than CSNY. I was thinking, "I wanna pee, I have to pee", lololol. I held out. 🍹🍹🍹
The drum break made me think of 'Make Me Smile', then 'Free' comes in full-bore Chicago brass'n'balls. ✌🎹🎸🔥😘🎶🎺🎷💞

  • @stevenjohnson9484

I don't know who sang on Flight 602, but it may include 1 of the horn players, Given the time, they sound unusually like Crosby Stills and Nash. A throwback to the hippie days.

So Crosby Stills and Nash, and Chicago were up for Grammy's Best New Artist for 1969. perhaps Flight 602 was a nod to CSN as they won the Grammy . Hmm. probably not.

Recording three double albums of original material in the space of two years would stretch any band, even one as a creative as Chicago and to my ears Chicago III often sounded tired and just a bit flat. However, they returned to form big time on V and VI, both single albums.

These songs might have been the high-lite of IV - Chicago at Carnegie Hall. Somehow they screwed up the recordings on the album, but there's still a lot of great moments.
