I had to pretend to be his "friend" when his brother visited, we hid our photos, and despite us both trying, ultimately his shame drove a wedge between us. He couldn't consolidate our relationship while everyone told him - from his religion to his family and friends - it wasn't okay. So glad Matt is doing this tremendous work. Someone needs to.
OMG! I am so very sorry for your devastating loss! As a mother, I simply can’t comprehend how any parent could turn their back on their child as a result of sexual orientation, something they have no control over. The “honor systems” these parents embrace are archaic and barbaric, but that is all they know. They have been brainwashed into the belief system which fears embarrassment and the loss of control of their child far more than it fears losing that child. It’s a senseless, tragic ideology which has no place in 21st century society. In truth, all parents should love their children without exception and the needs of their children should come first, and if they can’t live with those facts, they shouldn’t be allowed to be parents!
