Kayak Fishing: Surviving the Pecos River - Part 2 | Field Trips with Robert Field

- If you haven't seen Part One yet, watch it here: • Kayak Fishing: Survivi...
Two years ago, Bert and Dan Rodriguez attempted to kayak fish their way down 61 miles of the Lower Pecos River from Pandale Crossing to the Pecos High Bridge. Halfway through their trip, flash floods trapped them at their campsite, forcing them to abandon their gear and evacuate via helicopter.
Now, two years later, Bert and Dan have returned to the Pecos to finish what they started, and they've invited me along to document the trip.
In Part Two, we'll traverse the flutes on day three, an endless stretch of shallows that means lots of dragging. Then on day four, we'll make it to the fateful campsite the boys got trapped in during the Langtry Flood in 2014, and as fate would have it, a thunderstorm meets us there.
Come along for the adventure in part two of this four-part miniseries.

This is unbelievable!! Best video I've seen on any television show. Robert Field, you are AMAZING!! I LOVE YOU AND AM SO VERY PROUD OF ALL YOU DO!! GET IT BABY!!
I love you too momma! Thanks for being my #1 fan.
Flora, like floral, flowers.
Fauna is animals, like fauns.
:)
Great series so far! Glad I found your channel for the saltwater yak fishing, but I am extremely happy to see these river trips!
Thanks so much man!
Robert; loved part 2 just as much. The beautiful fishing; but also the wildness of PECOS. The awesomeness of desert storms Dad telling stories of death in desert from drowning in flash floods that caught folks unaware.
My Dad's kinda bucket list: was for me & him to take Pecos & some on Rio Grande. Unfortunately, he died before we could.
Believe he would have loved watching your trip here.
Thanks for sharing & thanks to the guys for returning & complete the trip.
Another 20 minutes of pure envy.... minus the storms Lol
Hahaha yeah dude, it was sketchy. Glad you're enjoying 'em!
Excellent video, Robert! You're name is well known in my house and everybody ( kids, too!) get pumped when Robert Field has a new video. Whether you know it or not, your videos are way more than entertainment, videography, etc. What you do inspires people to press on, go farther than they thought possible and for me, gaining a new perspective on fishing. It really goes beyond this sport, at least for me and my house. Thanks for all the videos, my friend! I will be watching part 3 & 4 as soon as I can.
This is an awesome video series, loved your Devils canyon series as well. Keep em coming my friend. I so want to do one of these adventures before I die. How lucky are you to live this life congrats.
Thanks Andrew! If I can do it, you can do it. I'm no expert, just a regular dude who decides to go for it and figure out the details later! It's not always easy scrounging together a living doing what I do, but I definitely consider myself blessed.
Absolutely, and thank you. Love your stuff definitely worth it I believe .we only have one life to live best to to something that makes us happy a full filing.
Man, great job. Watching this gave me chills. Of course being there with Bert and Dan in 2014 brings a whole different level of surreal as I watch the video. Although I wish I could have been with y'all. Again, great job Robert!
I'm sure it brought back a "flood" of memories. (Sorry, had to, haha). Glad you're enjoying the series brother.
Hope you guys enjoy Part 2! Post up any questions that you have about what we did, how we did it, or anything else! I answer every one.
Robert Field did you like the wilderness kayaks. Do you think any other kayak would have done better on the trip?
Do you like the wilderness system's A.T.A.K 140?
I LOVED the ATAK 140 man. I was worried because it was so long that it wouldn't be maneuverable enough in the rocks, but it's so stable that it kept me upright even when I messed things up. I was the only one to not flip once during the trip.
I absolutely love it man. Killer platform if you're looking for something super stable that still paddles well, and the deck is very well thought out.
Robert Field What up brotha! How do you think the Hobie quest 13 would do on some river trips? I don't know if you have ever been on one but they aren't quite as wide at 28". Got an awesome deal on two gently used demos for 700$ at my local dealer! Could not pass that up! Again man, can't tell you enough how badass your vids are! Going to Devils river this summer for first time and already told the girlfriend we are going to los buzos when we get the money! You're living the dream my man keep it up!
Big thanks Robert great fisherman. God bless.
Thanks Manuel
outstanding! as beautiful as it is....I think i'd have to let folks like you Robert do the adventure for me. touche'!
Haha if I can do it, you can do it brother.
better than anything on tv.....for sure!
Thanks Joe, I really appreciate that!
I know that was really intense caught in that storm during a flash flood warning. I've been caught on the lake in a kayak when a storm came from nowhere. It's no fun at all. So glad all of you made it out safe!!! Can't wait for part 3 and 4!!!!
Yeah man, especially after the guys already almost died from a flood in the same spot. I couldn't believe it was happening again. Luckily the river didn't rise much that night. We kept having to get up and walk down that Jeep trail to the river in the pouring rain and wind to make sure our kayaks weren't about to get swept downriver. If we got stranded there, we'd be looking at about a week's hike to any semblance of civilization.
Good Lord man, great update! Can't wait far part 3! Also, lesson learned, dont do this trail with Bert and Dan lol Glad yall made it under not so great circumstances!
Hahaha yeah man, I still joke with them about never going near water with them again.
Beautiful shots. I'm ready for part 3.
Thanks Matthew! Tuesday!
So glad you had this series in the suggested video at the end of the New Zealand trip Melly and I are doing a binge watch of this series. Boy you get to do some cool stuff and see great places with awesome people so glad we found your channel bro.
Thanks!! This was a special trip.
You are the master of adventure fishing filmmaking!
Thanks James!
O the suspense! Looking forward to part 3. I've now added one of these trips to my bucket list.
It's a special place man, do it!
Watched both episodes this am. Good job telling the story of your trip and showcasing a primo wild river. Looking forward to the third installment.
Thanks man! Part 3 aired today, hope you dig it!
Catching up on your early videos your office has some amazing views keep up the good work .
Thanks man glad you’re diggin the vids!
Brother man... I can't get enough of your adventures. Love your videos! Such great quality! Keep it bro!
Thanks Brent, I appreciate that! Part 4 (the finale) of this series airs Tuesday.
Awesome video! Can't wait for part 3. I was already a subscriber, but this series made me click that little notification bell. I know everything worked out or I wouldn't be seeing these video, but the suspense is real!
Haha I'm glad you're enjoying the series bro! Part 3 aired today, hope you dig it!
This is some legendary stuff! I love exploring the rivers here in South Carolina but we dont have anything as beautiful as this!
It's an incredible place, that's for sure. Thanks for checking it out Tommy!
Just freakin awesome! Great video Robert. Even better adventure I'm sure.
Thanks Mark, I appreciate you checking it out! Part 4 (the finale) of this series airs Tuesday.
Epic trip and video! Your videos are on par, if not better, than those done with professional camera crews. Great job with the filming and editing, very impressive. I gotta add this trip on my to do list now.
I appreciate the kind words brother!
amazing... pure adventure beautiful place lessons learned.. this video has everything!! haha love it!
go Rob
Thanks Fernando! I really appreciate that.
Crazy stuff man. can't wait for pt3!
Thanks Dalton! It airs Tuesday!
Robert Field good deal. you ever going to make it back up to the Adirondacks?
Those horses were watching over you guys ❤
Thank you for this video. Within the next two years I'm going to make this Journey
Do it brother! I'd recommend doing the Devil's River first. It's a good warm-up and there are more options for outfitters and put-ins/take-outs because it's a little more developed. It's a very similar river, but the Pecos is more intense in every way. But the Devil's has smallmouth, too, which are awesome!!
we talk about that happening to our group here in W.V on the new river. you just never know.
great video's can't wait for part 3.
I'd love to fish the New River one day. Thanks for watching bro!
Awesome! I've been waiting for Part 2.
awesome stuff.....I hate when those bad storms come up when fishing
It was sketchy after the guys almost died from a similar storm two years prior...
Sure does sound like fun. The scenery & canyon walls are worth looking at. I do own a kayak. But mine isn't the kind you sit on top of, on mine you sit inside the kayak.
Yep. Sit on tops are better for fishing.
awesome shots of that storm!
All the quality shots were from Daniel Rodriguez. My little Olympus didn't like the dark. Haha
Friggin Awesome!! just found this and subbed... u do a great job with the videos. really enjoy this, gotta visit these places! thanks for sharing with us.
Glad you enjoyed it Brian! This is part 2 of 4, so check out the other episodes of the series if you liked this one! Part 3 aired today. Part 4 (the finale) of this series airs Tuesday.
beautiful images! I really enjoy your videos👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks!!
Great job dude! Im loving this so much
I'm glad brother! Thanks for making it possible!
Good content keep up the great work and kayak fishing.
Thanks Chandler!
Awesome video once again!
Thanks Bryan! Part 3 aired today!
Awesome! I know what I'm watching on lunch break now lol👍🏻🎣
Love this series!
Thanks man!
always like your vids!
Awesome, think this is doable in the spring? it is really the only time I have all year to make a trip like this. These videos should be getting a million views! You did an excellent job with the filming and editing!
Haha thanks man. We did it in late March, so yes, spring is a good time to go. Summer is VERY hot and winter the nights get freezing. In the spring it's usually warm days and cool nights.
How about late Sept or oct?
Another awesome video
+Jimmy Celtic thanks for checking out the series Jimmy. One of my favorite trips to date.
Robert Field Amazing videos i finally got to watch every part im binge watching your channel today
this is just so good
Thanks man!
Stellar! Love your vids to death! Don't stop!
Thanks for the kind words bro, it means a lot!
Amazing trip! I'd love to do that.
So get out there and do one like it! I'm no expert, just a regular dude. If I can do it, you can! Thanks for watching, Part 3 airs in a week!
Love these man
Thanks Simon!
Awesome video!! How about making one about the equipment you used or would use next time for such a trip?
I've had a few others ask the same thing, I'll work on putting something together.
Awesome video!
Thanks man!
Great vid keep posting
+Isaac Byrnes thanks Isaac
Lol the dude with the camera
I'm always "that guy"
Very interesting video awesome my friend
Love your videos! They are well produced. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words! Part 4 (the finale) of this series airs Tuesday.
Awesome!
Thanks Rod!
Oh love your fishing experience videos. Question, that kayak is it safe for salt water ,or all kayaks differ in ways .
Just about any Kayak is fine in saltwater. Now if you mean offshore out in deep water, you want something wider and stable
16:17.....(robert field voice) "..that was insane"!
hahah
Looks like an exciting trip. Well done! What are the the other boats on the trip and did you notice any pros/cons?
We had a Wilderness Systems Ride 135, a Jackson Kayak Cuda and a Jackson Kayak Coosa. The Cuda seemed the most tippy in the rapids. The Coosa handles rivers really well, but is harder on the long stretches. The Ride 135 is a solid all around boat. I took the Ride 115 down the Devil's River 3 years ago. All in all I was very happy with the ATAK 140 I was in.
Robert Field thanks for the info. My friend has been talking to you about a possible Utah river trip this summer. Is there a good all around boat you would recommend for under $1k and could handle a multi day trip?
Ha! You're not a REAL Texan 'till you've survived a flashflood on the Lower Pecos! Hilarious,we used to do all that while floating downriver on bus tire inner tubes.
This is bucket list stuff man! What kind of casting rod are you using?
That green one is a McCain Kayak Fishing Series rod I was testing out. Pretty solid rod.
"Well we're hearing lightning" lol 9:40
+Andrew Greer haha yeeeaaahhh
Awesome. How did you manage to keep all your camera/drone batteries charged?
I used a variety of tools, but mostly I brought battery banks. You charge 'em up before you leave, and they'll charge multiple GoPros each before they die. The problem is they're heavy. You can watch my Devil's River video (the sister river to the Pecos) and I also show the BioLite Stove, which charges cameras using fire.
Taking my first river trip next month down the Brazos below Possum Kingdom 19 miles. Any advice on gear and whatnot?
Oh shit... life just put on hold....
Haha
NicE vIdeo
GrEAT sERIes
+Isaac Ford thanks Isaac!
we're you using a keitech swim bait the whole trip?
No not at all, I only brought one pack of 5 and they don't hold up very well. I caught fish on a variety of swimbaits, worms and craws on shakey heads, small spinners and a popper. Swimbaits were the easiest to fish because we're constantly moving, so a slow presentation like a craw is tough to work effectively. With those, I basically just tried to make a perfect cast behind each boulder and hoped it got smashed on the fall.
I was on the devil's river when this happened. Driving back we had to re route twice to get home
What swimbait were you using
It's by a company called Keitech. I forget the name, but it's ribbed and real soft. Comes in a hard plastic package. Bass Pro makes a knockoff, I think they call it their speed shad but that could be wrong.
Would a tarpon 160 be a bad choice for this river or the devils river?
What time of year did you make this trip?
March
What bait do you use I live in
Iraan
👌
Got any tips for a begging kayak fisher i use a sun dolphin journey 10ft
Man that's a pretty broad question. My tip would be spend time on the water, especially with other people! That's the best way to learn. If you have any specific questions, hit me up and I'll be happy to answer them.
what knife are you carrying on your life vest?
what jig were you using?
I don't even remember. I don't think jigs matter too much, I just buy stuff on clearance. It was a black and blue swim jig with a black and blue Yoda swimbait by 412 Bait Co.
Awesome video!!! What's the song at 9:44?
Thanks! I don’t remember man, sorry. You can try using the Shazam app to find out.
Robert Field no worries, I tried shazam it didn't recognize it. Fish on!
Robert Field also a little random but have you ever paddled the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 130x? Thinking of buying one mostly for bass fishing on lakes and striper fishing bays and salt ponds in RI. Going to demo one next month
Why didn't he want you to record?
It was an emotional moment. He just wanted to run through everything then do it again while filming. I ignored him so I could get the "real" walkthrough, not a staged one.
that's not a kissing bug. a kissing bug will have a "cone" shaped head. what you found was a "bee assassin bug". I would love to invite you to my Facebook group that is just for insect identification. :)
Hmmmm
New Mexico lightning is the worst on the Pecos river. Pretty exciting videos though. Always stick with your buddies, not photos. The lighting made me cringe.
Mother Nature will not let you forget she's not one to fuck with
True that, Nick!
