Yeah. This was in the comments on that theory video. It's a shame no one on the SCB team reads through comments much (although I'm sure that would be a huge task) as a lot of British folks are often on the comments correcting the misunderstanding of britishisms.
I’m from Sweden! Sorry you’re no longer on the top spot in our country, such a shame. Love the podcast and your channel. I usually don’t listen to podcasts, but this is something entirely different, LOVE IT! Best regards from the Swedish short snout!
I am in an excruciating amount of pain due to advanced Multiple Sclerosis, and am in a nursing home as a result. I love Harry Potter, and I love your channels. As a matter of fact, y'all are my only Harry Potter related content. Watching you makes me temporarily forget I was ever in pain to begin with, so thank you so very much. Anyhow... Speaking of the year 1492, In the 2011-2013 Showtime television series, The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons, the very first episode begins with the following title cards: Title Card: Rome 1492 Title Card: The center of the Christian world. The seat of the Papacy. Title Card: The Pope had the power to crown and un-crown kings. To change the course of empires. Title Card: The Church was mired in corruption. Pope Innocent VIII was dying, Title Card: And the Papal throne was the prize desired by all. Just sayin'...
I like how in the movie Quirrel makes a point of not shaking Harry's hand when he first meets him in the Leaky Cauldron. It's a change from the book but I think a good one. It's one more clue that you'll only realise the second time round and relieves the movie of having to explain why Voldy wasn't there yet. Also refusing the hand shake is much more subtle in the movie than it could be in a book where it would have to be described explicitly, so I think they chose the best version for each medium.
Ah yes, Mandy Brocklehurst. Almost forgot about her. Really sad how her life was cut short by a fanged frisbee accident over the summer prior to her fourth year. May we never forget.
I love how you can hear the bros crafting theories that would "later" be turned into videos, but because they record these in advance the videos have actually been made.
I watched the dragon castle theory video before this, so listening to the pod i was suddenly like “wait a minute is this.. oh! This is that same conversation!” So cool to get a peek behind the curtain of theory inspirations!
My theory is the house ghost titles goes to the oldest members of their houses because if think about it three of the 4 are among the 1st batch of students that were at the school. And I think Sir Nicholas was probably the oldest Gryffindor and only ghost they had. Which says alot the gryffindor's.
You're not wrong. In the fifth book, when Harry goes to Nick, he DOES say that it takes a specific kind of person to stay behind AS a ghost. So, in your theory, maybe that's why it's theoretically only Nick. Or, hey, who know? Maybe the Headless Hunt is mostly populated by Gryffindors, and the jocks in life must stay jocks in death. XD Who can say.
@@j.a.shawkins7640 they could be from other wizarding schools there's a possibility there too. And there's possibly they could've been after Nicholas had died.
@@richewilson6394 Hahaha!!! Oh no!!! XD Then The Headless Hunt situation just becomes a bunch of younger ghosts Meangirling Nick!!! XD I kind of love that? XD
Greetings from Sweden! I really, really enjoy this podcast. I've been a huge Harry Potter fan since I was about six or seven years old, and have read it in Swedish, English and Spanish just because I love it so much! I've been following you guys for at least six years, and the way you so passionately speak of HP and never seem to run out of ideas and theories is truly astounding. You've definitely earned your reputation as HP experts.Thank you for the immaculate vibes and comfort you guys bring, and the way you bring together the fanbase. Btw, the Philosopher's Stone is called "De vises sten" in Swedish, which translates to "The Stone of the Wise".
I've read the Harry Potter books in the exact same languages as well! Well, I'm nowhere near finished on the Spanish readthrough, as OotP is a sludge to get through sometimes (jumped from PS), but it's interesting that we share the same interest in Harry Potter and use the same languages. Do you speak Spanish fluently? I don't speak it yet, although I have been able to survive using it.
@@vignotum132 Really? That’s so cool! I wouldn’t say I’m fluent in Spanish, but good enough to read the books and understand them. I deliberately choose to read the HP books to practice my Spanish because I already new the story so well, and would be able to understand words thanks to context. But it was definitely a challenge!
52:48 the only reason I don’t subscribe to the filch is a manifestation of the school theory is because Molly in goblet of fire says there was another caretaker in her time
It's because of Quirrel's failure to steal the stone from Gringotts that Voldemort "keeps a closer eye" on him. Quirrel states that in his and Harry's confrontation at the end of the book
My favorite explanation for the words "Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!" are 4 of the Hogwarts house elves. Maybe they are he main elves of each of the houses or in charge of the feast specifically. When Dumbledor says this it does seam to be the que for the food to appear.
The reason that nobody knows what the Sorting Hat ceremony is: It's like a secret initiation. You're just not supposed to tell anyone anything about it. Plain and simple.
Yeah that’s how I saw it. Like Ron has other older brothers but I feel like they’d all definitely keep the tradition of not telling the younger ones. Even Percy to keep tradition
Yeah, it might work with the Weasleys, but if Lucius could tell Draco, he definitely would, wouldn’t he? Draco knew about the Triwizard Tournament when he definitely was not supposed to…
1:01:22 I looked in my copy of GoF and you were SO close. It says: "If a muggle looks at it(hogwarts), all they see is a mouldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying 'DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE'
I wanted to say I have been fortunate enough the past few weeks to have had Sunday's off of work and this has become the highlight of, and my favourite part of those days off so thank you for that. Also I directed my step mother to this podcast as well because she is a huge Harry Potter nerd and she really loves it as well. So thanks for blessing us with this podcast. It's a true joy to listen to it.
You have talked about it in the past and been waiting for this episode to bring it up. I think the reason the hat talks about Slytherin is more because Harry kept saying "not Slytherin." It was the hat wanting to know why Harry wanted any other house and saying that Slytherin is a good house also.
I'm from Sweden. Your podcast is awesome! It's inspired me to read along in my physical copy of the book (in Swedish) which I haven't opened in many years. I love diving this deep into the details of the book with you every week.
I believe that Pottermore states that each headmaster of Hogwarts gets to write their own school song, which means that Dumbledore wrote the Hoggy Warty Hogwarts lyrics and came up with the tradition of singing it at your own pace. I almost think that's more satisfying than the founders writing it because it really plays in to the whimsy of Dumbledore's character. (Also Pottermore says that the reason it wasn't sung year two onwards was because things were getting more serious and Dumbledore didn't think it appropriate.)
I thought it was always song at the same time turing the feast even thought it was never mentioned again. Also in second year Ron and Harry didn't eat with the others.
I´m from Sweden! When you first told us about this podcast my first thought was that you would do your own audio book on the Harry Potter series. But this is so much better. You bring so much joy to peoples life, just doing what you love. If you ever visit Sweden let´s grab a beer, would be awesome. PS: I will be finishing my law school in a few months 33 years old, its never to late to do what you want! Best of Regards from Sweden!
Considering how Sir Nick responds to the question about the Bloody Baron, I'm pretty sure it's just considered impertinent to ask a ghost about their death, and we all know Nick is quite the stickler for decorum.
In the UK we have the idea of after dinner mints - a small confection usually meant as a pallet cleanser. That's what I always assumed the mint humbugs were there for, in lieu of After Eights (which are vastly superior)
53:59 but it does change the narrative. Why would Voldemort go after the 'squib's cat' (his words) if he wasn't a squib. As to why does Filch work in the castle? well maybe he likes being around magic and this is the best place for him to do it. Remember he tried to do the qwikspell course. And he's always using magical products to clean things up even if he himself doesn't have magic.
I think the whole potato thing is less of a wizard thing and (similar to the humbugs) a British thing, because we love our taters. Roasted and mashed potatoes are common sightings for Sunday lunch and Christmas dinner, and chips are also pretty common, whether they're with fish (battered), fish fingers, with gravy, with fried egg, chip butties, etc
Makes me think of Samwise Gamgee- taters, po-tay-toes, bake em mash em put em in a stew. 😁 I’m a potato lover myself. Roast potatoes are the best, but fondant potatoes are the best of the best.
Also here in Austria potatoes are very populare side dish for feasts. Of yourse french fries are served a lot if you dine out side but every dinner with meat that is more fency is served with somekind of potatoes. They are also very populare for BBQ.
In my Bloomsbury Prisoner of Azkaban it does say Flitwick was carrying out a three-legged stool. Fun theory that they changed it to four to represent all the Houses. Also I would love a Supercarlin Brothers’ Founders Series, your What Ifs are always 10/10, and it always annoys me we know next to nothing about the Founders.
I thought so I'm from the uk and only can remember it be referred to as a 3 legged stool maybe it was another issue, like with the word philosophers where the USA publisher decided it would make more sense for it to be a typical 4 legged stool. Although it was probably just a simple error, is it in all copies of the sorcerer Stone books or just the earlier ones?
@@cerinryder In my books, it’s Four Legged in Philospher’s Stone, In Chamber it doesn’t specify how many legs it has, Three Legged in Goblet, it’s not specified in Order and it’s not mentioned in Prince or Hallows. They must have realised, ohh it should have four legs later on, but there’s gotta be more than one stool at Hogwarts, it’s such an unnecessary thing to change
Loving the podcast. However, how can you think Potatoes aren't magical food? They are magic! You can prepare them in 10,000 ways and still have 10,000 more ways to prepare them! Give the PO-TA-TOE more credit!!!
I thought Mertle didn't know how she'd died because it was so sudden. She saw a pair of big eyes then died. So if anyone had asked her, she would have just said she didn't know.
@@conormurphy4328 well they thought it was giant spider in the girls bathroom. Also not saying they would think that right away, but like they said Dumbledore had half a century to think about it
@@IdaSantti a giant spider that was already in the castle. Also for them to think that it would have to be able to kill magically which Acromantula haven’t been shown to be able to do.
@@conormurphy4328 If she had been killed by a spider, she would have said, "I saw this gigantic spider, and I felt its fangs sink into my flesh, and then I died. Oh, and I saw its eyes, there were eight of them and they were black. I distinctly remember them not being two and yellow."
Jim Dale does in fact read “. . . carrying an ancient hat and a three-legged stool out of the hall” in the Prisoner audiobook. In all the newer physical books I own, the text says “four-legged stool”
Though you are correct that "luna" is Spanish for "moon," I think it is more important in a Harry Potter wizarding world context that it is the Latin word for "moon." Latin is found throughout names and spells in the wizarding world. While Albus is the most memorable example, Luna Lovegood's father's name is also an example: Xenophilius. Granted, his name is a Latinization of a Greek name, but it is still the Latin form that is used in that case. Names like Hermione, Penelope, and Merope are all straight up Greek (and the final "e" is pronounced as /ee/ in all three cases), but Latin is the more common, and given that Xenophilius is Latin, it is more likely that Luna's name is intended to be Latin, not Spanish, where Xeonophilius would be "Zenofilio."
I've always seen Filch as being a charity case from Dumbledore. Him being a manifestation wouldn't make sense unless he manifested recently When Arthur and Molly was in school some 25 to 30 years prior to this book, it was a different caretaker all together. It could also be that Dumbledore put in a squib here as kind of a challenge to the students in the sense of "if you are getting caught by a squib who can't even do magic, you shouldn't be doing whatever it is you were doing" out of universe explanation being that the author just wanted to put in a squib character for the reveal later and this is really the best place for it
The clocks changed here in the UK last night so this episode came an hour earlier than expected! I’d be over the moon except I havent read chapter 7 yet, I’m going to read each chapter right before the podcast each Sunday, no better way to experience it imo
Oh brothers! How much you would love to see a Founders series! And helping writing it! In your minds, they seems almost real characters, persons... Love to see you "fanficing" them ❤
blubber is also a British word for crying - example "Stop blubbering" - Someone blubbered through their sentence (suggests crying whilst talking) to blubber isn't to wail but it's definitely tearing up - from the English Cambridge dictionary: Blubber: to cry in a noisy way like a child: There he sat, cowering against the wall, blubbering like a child.
The basilisk is definitely in fantastic beasts, and i think that might be the book Hermione reads to figure it out. It still makes sense that other people didn't realize it was a basilisk first though, because they didn't have all the clues about harry hearing disembodied voices, Hagrid's roosters dying, etc.
I absolutely love this, just listening to you two nerd out over Harry Potter chapter by chapter, and in the meantime throwing together theories that you later turn into videos- it's like your own kind of magic right there. Also i love how the set for this looks!
I've always thought that each piece of Voldemort's soul that becomes a Horcrux is an aspect of him that ties him to his humanity. Each piece gives the container that aspect (i.e. the Locket seemed to prey on jealousy and the Diary trust) and as he shed each of the pieces he himself became less human.
Peppermints are a common digestive aid (incidentally that's why restaurants will often have a bowl of complimentary mints at the host's desk or otherwise near the front door).
This podcast is perfect to listen to while at work! As someone who has everything Harry Potter this podcast has wonderful insight that I wouldn't otherwise think of!
Loving the podcast so far…wait till y’all get to Chamber and the part where Ron correctly guesses the whole end of the book! I just finished CoS and when I read that passage, my mind exploded
They do ask Myrtle about her death at some point I remember, but she just says all she remembers is the horrible eyes or something to that effect. Everybody's too afraid of the bloody Baron to ask him about his death A theory on the ghosts. All of the house ghosts are the first to have died and become ghosts that were in the respective house they represent. The reason why The Grey Lady, The Bloody Baron, and The Fat Fryer are so much older as ghosts than nearly headless neck is because it's so much more rare for Gryffindor to become ghosts because their defining the characteristic is courage and Nick himself admits that ghostly existence is for cowards too afraid to move on.
It could also be somekind of taboo or just good manners between ghosts not to ask each other how they died. Nick dosn't seem to like to talk about his either.
I like to think that Harry can tell about the Hat because he’s one of the few who understand that the ultimate decision lies with the person, not the Hat. It’s like “yup, you got it, you can share the knowledge about me”
I love this podcast, great to listen to when I am at work during the graveyard shift. I would like to point out that there are only 3 known hat stalls in Harry Potter lore: McGonagall, Pettigrew, and Karasu. Just a fan fact, you guys are amazing and love your videos. Keep up the amazing work!
Caput draconis, head of the Dragon is a reference to the Lunar Nodes, the North Node is the Head of the Dragon and the South Node is the tail of the Dragon. The nodes are mathematical points on the lunar ecliptic which lets you calculate when and where Eclipses, both Lunar and Solar will occur.
So on this read through, and listening to the podcast, I thought "What if Harry's scary didn't hurt just because Voldemort was close by, but because he was reading Snape's mind. Snape wouldn't have necessarily been protecting his thoughts....Voldemort would wanted to try to see if Snape's loyalty had changed. Snape looking at Harry and hating him would've probably made Voldemort feel the same way (strongly) causing the strong feeling that caused Harry pain. Also, maybe those feelings played into Voldemort later deciding that he could trust Snape.
40:40 Regarding Snape and Quirrell. If you notice in the movie, as soon as Harry touches his scar, Snape is seen glancing at Quirrell for a moment, like he thinks something is going on there.
Caput Draconis = Head of the Dragon = Gryffindor Common Room Password Headmaster = Head of Hogwarts = Office located behind a Griffin Door Hogwarts = sleeping dragon Headmaster = Griffin Door = Head of the Dragon = Gryffindor = Caput Draconis
J & Ben, love this podcast! Already one of my favorite shows to listen/watch. I myself was 11 years when the movies came out, and then I started reading the books. Like so may others I wanted to get my letter to Hogwarts and start doing magic. Thanks to you guys the journey and dream stays alive. Just turned 34 and still waiting to get the letter 😂
I'm not sure the stool is super important in the sorting ceremony. It could just be that they grab the nearest stool each year, it doesn't have to be the same one.
Gentlemen! I first want to say I am a huge fan! I’ve been following your channel for around 5 years now and consistently enjoy the videos across all of the fandoms you cover. Anytime a new movie comes out y’all are the first place I go to for reviews! I’m around y’all’s age down here in South Carolina and have also grown up in the “sweet spot” where we all aged somewhat with Harry as the books were being released and the story progressed. I love the new “Through the Griffin Door”series and am enjoying going chapter by chapter with you guys. I also read HP on audible a lot while I’m at work or doing chores at home and this has been a lot of fun to listen to while working. I particularly loved watching the inception of the Hogwarts is a Dragon theory after having watched the video on it a week or so ago. Also Harry’s (and seemingly the other Gryffindor’s) love for potatoes seems fitting to me. The Potato is obviously the most magical food! What other food can you make into some dish for literally any occasion? Breakfast: Hash Browns Fast Food: French Fries Fancy Meal: Baked Potato (my personal favorite) Holidays: Mashed Potatoes Picnic: Potato Salad Snack at Home: Chips Party: Vodka I borrowed some of that list from a meme I saw a while back but it still stands. Potatoes are magic and you can eat them anytime and with anything! Anyway guys, I love the new show and look forward to tuning in each week for the next chapter. Hope you guys hit number one in America next. Keep it up! P.S. Y’all should do a meet & greet around Charlotte, NC sometime. Take care!
45:10 Not all ghosts are house ghosts because they want to do other things? For instance, Professor Binns prefer teaching over being a house ghost or as you said Mertyl's ghost. 1:05:26 It is so strange that even after reading the books 100s of times we have not been able to pin point the exact qualities of being a Hufflepuff. Like here you are describing Hufflepuff using Cedric as an example, rather than adjectives like bravery, cleverness and ambitious.
7/19 chapters from the first book down, 12/19 chapters remaining. You guys are amazing, and I love your theories. SuperCarlinBrothers needs to have MovieFlame appear on Through The Griffin Door at some point to discuss a chapter or two because both channels are a great source of information related to the wizarding world established in the books.
1:06:18 - 1:08:20 It could likely be him forcing the dream because we do see that later on Harry would go on to experience something similar but even more drastic later on in the series where Harry is getting visions from Voldemort.
Since the Fidelius Charm is brought up early on regarding the Sorting Hat, I had a thought recently! Could a Fidelius Charm have been used to make someone Secret Keeper and then modify the memory of that person so they no longer remember what they're Secret Keeper of? Would the charm still work in this case and basically make it an impenetrable Secret, since the Keeper themselves couldn't even remember it?
I have first editions of all the books and on page 117 of sorcerer’s stone it says “harry quickly looked down again as professor mcgonagall silently placed a four legged-stool in front of the first years.” BUT in prisoner of Azkaban, on page 90, it’s says “professor flitwick, who was a tiny little wizard with a shock of white hair, was carrying an ancient hat and a three-legged stool out of the hall.” Huzzah! Mystery solved.
Basilisk is in fantastic beast and where to find them, the Hogwarts edition with scribbles from Harry and Ron in it. Side note: Pixies are dangerous level is XXX and Harry wrote "but XXXXXXX if you're Lockart"
only found the supercarlinbrothers channel a month or so ago and have already binged pretty much every video in the theory and what if series. working my way through the quizzes now ! so glad to have this weeky delight to look forward to, and be revisiting the harry potter books this way ❤
I just love your dedication and your unique perspective on anything Harry Potter. Such and enjoyable podcast. Keep up the amazing job, only 192 chapters left! Greatings from Greece. :) PS: I just thought of a great drinking game. Hit a shot whenever the word "like" is uttered and you'll get wasted in approximately 8 minutes. :P
I think the hat is described as choosing the house the student would be happiest in. Hermione though smart and valuing knowledge and rules was also probably totally alone. Wanting friends and inclusion even more. Also feeling excluded as a muggle born felt needed to prove herself. Perhaps
What if while Harry is talking to Dumbledore's portrait after the battle and before he puts the Elder wand back in the tomb with Dumbledore, he repairs the hat with it's previous enchantments, therefore is able to talk about the hat later
These podcasts are definitely the highlights of my Sundays, and I do find myself re-listening to Through the Griffin Door when I'm talking a walk or drive. Your podcast has motivated me to revisit the first and second books for the first time in a very long time; I'm constantly listening to book 3-7 in my daily life. It has also motivated me to revisit the 8 movies for the first time in equally as long. A question, and I don't want to derail your plans, would you consider doing a quick book to movie comparison; either as a last 20min of the last chapter of each book or as a SCB video (which in a sense there already is a good handful)?
I think Filch definitely committed a crime against a wizard child and was given a life sentenced to serve at Hogwarts since they probably couldn’t send him to Azkaban or muggle prison. It’s the ultimate punishment for a crime like that.
I’m surprised they forgot about his Kwikspell letter being a Squib. Another theory I have is like you said he may have gotten in some trouble. Albus sympathizing what had happened with his father, and his sister. Albus helps people who may be misunderstood (Squibs), gave Filch, like Hagrid.. a chance for good purpose, and a reliable job at Hogwarts. Filch I think just enjoys tormenting kids. And I see Albus letting his behavior kind of just run itself giving students some exposure to “interesting and unpleasant” wizards in the world. He is harmless to students at the end of the day. Otherwise Albus wouldn’t have him around.
The biggest surprise when i heard that you guys are number 1 in Lebanon for books podcast since I really believe i must be the only one in Lebanon who watches the pod 😂😂🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧
I love the idea of the sorting hat simulating something similar to the Divergent series simulation of sorting factions. You go through challenges, in your mind, that depict where you belong. On the outside, the sorting can appear instantaneous, but within the hat (the mind) you experience an entire obstacle course to determine who you are. The more nuanced your mind the longer the obstacle course is. Which is why some people are sorted immediately while others take longer. (“You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head…”). It reminds me a lot of the scene in King’s Cross station with Dumbledore being all in Harry’s mind. Anyways. Carry on. 🤷♀️👌🏻
The way I head canon that Neville calles himself a muggle, and also the Azkaban guard thing is that, the story is told to us from Harry, and I know if someone says a word to me and then explaines it, I sometimes just remember the explanation and not the word. So Harry remember the explination of the word Squib but not the word squib, it is after all his first day in Hogwarts.
Hermione is not a hatstall, her sorting did take over four minutes. The only hatstalls that Harry Actually meets in their series is Minerva McGonagall and Peter Pettigrew. I let them slide last time they said this but now that they have mentioned it twice I feel obligated to point this out.
Filch is one solid poltergeist if ever was one, which he's not 😂 Given that Molly names the caretaker before Filch one Apolleon Pringle oh and Mcgonagall mentioned that Filch has only been at Hogwarts for 25 yrs (by the time of the battle of Hogwarts comes around)
Yes! The idea that Filch is a poltergeist is, IMO, the single stupidest theory I've ever seen from SCB. I have two theories about him: 1. He is being punished for a crime. Maybe because he's a skwib, they decided it wasn't appropriate to send him to Azkaban. So they made him do "community service" as a non-magical janitor at Hogwarts. In support of this theory, I point out that his name is Filch, which means "steal". Perhaps he was a thief. 2. This one is a bit more complicated and deals with the fundamental nature of magic and the wizarding world. The idea is that the "energy" of magic (or whatever you want to call it) has to come from somewhere. Magic doesn't just happen by itself, but something has to "power" it. And what powers it is non-magical work. So they get a non-magical janitor to do work, which serves as a "power plant" for the magic being used at Hogwarts. It's also why Ron is given detention polishing trophies without magic. That provides more magical energy. And presumably, other similar tasks are given to students serving detention, to further "charge the magical batteries". And this is necessary at Hogwarts because of the remote location. In cities, there are plenty of muggles around doing ordinary muggle labor, which provides plenty of energy for the magic that the small percentage of wizards in the area need.
@@PhilBagels He's a pure Squib, as we know Squibs come from magical family, they don't have magic blood. You're second theory certainly is interesting I'll say. Though it does glide over the premise of "magical blood". Hagrid mentions to Harry upon getting him from the Hut on the Rock that "Muggles don't have a single *drop of magical blood* in them" highlighting that Magic is inherited and passed down through genetics, hence we can get muggle-born, Muggles that have enough magical potential to be in the Book of Admittance. Magic is passed down through genetics then and not through non magical work. Hogwarts has house elves, so I've never understood why they need a caretaker. Your first theory could help support why he's there. Although many squibs will stay in the magical world.
@@Martyn_Wolf That isn't what my second theory is saying. I know magical *ability* is passed down by blood. I'm saying that the energy that fuels it is in non-magical work - done by anyone, with or without magical blood. Wizards have the "magic engine" inside them, and squibs and muggles don't. But work done nearby - without magic - provides the gasoline. And yes, contrary to what Hagrid said, muggles do have magical blood in them occasionally, otherwise there would never be any muggleborn wizards.
@@PhilBagels What Hagrid refers too is most Muggles don't have a drop of magical blood. It's setting the stage that there's going to be some level of segregation because of it. Hmmm I don't think non magic work fuels magic. Otherwise all the non magical work the Muggles do would make nearly every Witch or Wizard highly powerful 😅 That would then discount that Magic is passed through genetics. If non magical work fueled it. What do you mean exactly by *fuel* regarding magic. As in what does this energy look like, where does it go?
@@Martyn_Wolf It's only a theory that I came up with. I admit it's rather contrived. But there are magical "traditions" of "fueled" magic. It's sometimes called "mana", and there are other names for it as well. You need a certain amount of mana to use magic. Perhaps more powerful spells require greater amounts. It has nothing to do with how powerful a wizard you are. Just like the amount of gasoline in a car's tank has nothing to do with how powerful the engine is. If there's gas, the engine can run. If there isn't, then it can't. And it has nothing to do with who is a wizard and who isn't. Mana doesn't do a muggle any good. Just like gasoline doesn't help you walk. Only wizards can use mana. The presence of mana doesn't make you a wizard. And applying this theory to HP, it would seem that in general, there's always plenty of mana around - because there are usually muggles nearby. But Hogwarts is far away from any muggles, so there needs to be some supplemental source of mana, provided by Filch, and students serving detention, and anyone nearby (such as in Hogsmeade) doing non-magical work. Every time you lift a heavy object using your muscles instead of wingardium leviosa, you're generating some mana. Maybe even every time you walk or run, instead of apporting or flying on a broom. But like I said, it's just a theory. Because the SCB are right: Filch's presence makes no sense without some kind of explanation. So either he's being punished or he's making mana. (Or he's a poltergeist. 🙄)
36:25 I think the reason no one got that it was a basilisk was that the whole petrifed-if-you-see-it-indirectly thing was unknown effect of its stare. But yeah, I don't know how Dumbledore didn't figure it out by asking Myrtle or any of the petrified victims from the first time, plus the fact that he was famous for his relationship with snakes
Something I have been thinking about, and something you said in this episode; What would happen if a dementor kissed Voldemort, or someone who had horcruxes? Cause they may suck the soul out of him but there’s other parts of his soul elsewhere so what would happen? Could he survive? Also, going off what you said this episode, what would happen if a Dementor kissed Harry(pre-Deathly Hallows)? As you stated, Harry has two souls, his and Voldemorts(well, 1/8th of it). If the Dementors kissed Harry and took his soul, would Voldy just take over? Or would they suck both out? Could they just suck Voldy’s soul and leave Harry’s and break the connection?
22:30 I’m now thinking about the Eleventh Doctor when he says “Top hats are cool.” Gryffindor responded with, “Witch hats are cool,” in the voice of Matt Smith.
Blubber in UK is someone crying rather pathetically, which is opposite of a Gryffindor. To the bitter end part doesn’t really work. Bitter end is pursuing something difficult or unpleasant for the person completing the task. End here is more about Slytherins doing anything, even if it requires something morally repugnant or stepping over others, to reach their personal end goals.
Sorting always came across to me as a secret initiation for the new students. They'd make a point of not writing it down anywhere such as _Hogwarts, a History._ If you've attended Hogwarts you know already and if you haven't it's kept private, to delight the next generation.
I love the idea of Nitwit, Blubber, Oddment and Tweak being house elves
Harry wearing the turban in his dream 1:04:21 is also a “he’s a horcrux” hint
Blubber can also mean to cry. So maybe a cry baby is the opposite of a Griffindoor
Came here to say this!
Also someone clumsy or unsure
@@spunkymonkey5102 I don't know where you got that definition from. "Blub" is a well-known English verb meaning to cry.
In the North (West) of England we have another strange word for cry, that is "Skrike", we have so many dialect words which are going out of use.

Anyhow...
Speaking of the year 1492,
In the 2011-2013 Showtime television series, The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons, the very first episode begins with the following title cards:
Title Card: Rome 1492
Title Card: The center of the Christian world. The seat of the Papacy.
Title Card: The Pope had the power to crown and un-crown kings. To change the course of empires.
Title Card: The Church was mired in corruption. Pope Innocent VIII was dying,
Title Card: And the Papal throne was the prize desired by all.
Seeing you go from laughing about Hogwarts being a dragon to actually working out the theory is fascinating!
Add to your founders series they take a dragon down at the pensive and transfigure it to the great hall
I’ve always loved the snide way McGonagall says “and Slytherin” in the movie 😂
I love how you can hear the bros crafting theories that would "later" be turned into videos, but because they record these in advance the videos have actually been made.
How can they discuss the newest playlist ranking then? I don't quite get it.
@@glebjohnson9057 either they edit it and wear the same clothes, or the playlist ranking discussion is out of date
@@hoppingwren Maybe the first option, but they also talk about a recent review left on the latest episode so it can't be the 2nd.
What theories are you talking about?
@@albusdumbledore5875 Towards the end of the episode, they talked about how the hogwarts castle might be a transfigured dragon

XD
Of course there aren't many Gryffindor ghosts, most of them are brave enough to move on.😅 Nick might be proof that the hat can make a mistake
What's up Sweden

This is ignored so often and almost word for word what I normally argue myself. Thank you!
It says:
"If a muggle looks at it(hogwarts), all they see is a mouldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying 'DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE'
I checked my copy of PoA and it says 3 legged stool. First Scholastic trade paperback Sept 2001
Loving the podcast. However, how can you think Potatoes aren't magical food? They are magic! You can prepare them in 10,000 ways and still have 10,000 more ways to prepare them! Give the PO-TA-TOE more credit!!!
its really fun to see you guys come up with the start of a theory that was on the main channel before this even went up!!
I thought Mertle didn't know how she'd died because it was so sudden. She saw a pair of big eyes then died. So if anyone had asked her, she would have just said she didn't know.
She would have said she saw big eyes and died. It's not a giant leap from that to basilisk
@@IdaSantti because it’s such a logical step that there would be a a basilisk in the girls toilet
In all the newer physical books I own, the text says “four-legged stool”
in my second hand British copy is says three-legged stool
Smarten yourself up means tidy your appearance. To look “smart” in British English means to look neatly put together.
I've always seen Filch as being a charity case from Dumbledore. Him being a manifestation wouldn't make sense unless he manifested recently
When Arthur and Molly was in school some 25 to 30 years prior to this book, it was a different caretaker all together. It could also be that Dumbledore put in a squib here as kind of a challenge to the students in the sense of "if you are getting caught by a squib who can't even do magic, you shouldn't be doing whatever it is you were doing"
out of universe explanation being that the author just wanted to put in a squib character for the reveal later and this is really the best place for it
Exactly. Hagrid isn't supposed to use magic and he also has a tough job. Physically dragging in 12 giant Christmas trees, for example.
This podcast is so comfy I keep falling asleep
The clocks changed here in the UK last night so this episode came an hour earlier than expected! I’d be over the moon except I havent read chapter 7 yet, I’m going to read each chapter right before the podcast each Sunday, no better way to experience it imo
You guys make me look forward to Sunday's! This is honestly one of my favorite parts of my week.
Yes, Founders Series!! If Hogwarts was a dragon and Griffindor and Ravenclaw common rooms are both in towers, those could be the dragon eyes. :)
49:59 yeah that sounds pretty far fetched. Filch is a squib and he's definitely a live human being not a poltergeist.
Oh brothers! How much you would love to see a Founders series! And helping writing it! In your minds, they seems almost real characters, persons... Love to see you "fanficing" them ❤
I’m from Sweden 😁 and looking forward to four years of Through the griffin door! Best Sunday activity 🧙🏼♀️
blubber is also a British word for crying - example "Stop blubbering" - Someone blubbered through their sentence (suggests crying whilst talking) to blubber isn't to wail but it's definitely tearing up - from the English Cambridge dictionary: Blubber: to cry in a noisy way like a child: There he sat, cowering against the wall, blubbering like a child.
I've always assumed the door was so simply locked so Hagrid and Filch could feed Fluffy.
Quickly become part of my Sunday routine, loving this series guys
They do ask Myrtle about her death at some point I remember, but she just says all she remembers is the horrible eyes or something to that effect.
Everybody's too afraid of the bloody Baron to ask him about his death
A theory on the ghosts.
It's so cool to see you guys come up with a theory live. The thought process is fascinating.
I like to think that Harry can tell about the Hat because he’s one of the few who understand that the ultimate decision lies with the person, not the Hat. It’s like “yup, you got it, you can share the knowledge about me”
Watching as you guys get the seed of a theory is for sure going to be my favorite part of this podcast.
Love this show it feels like I'm rereading the books again for the first time from the in depth detail and learning things that I've never seen
I was waiting for them to talk about the dream, I have always taken it Harry's first prophetic dream.
My favourite Maggie Smith moment in the films is from HBP
"Why is it that when something happens it's always you three?"
Caput Draconis = Head of the Dragon = Gryffindor Common Room Password
Headmaster = Head of Hogwarts = Office located behind a Griffin Door
Hogwarts = sleeping dragon
Headmaster = Griffin Door = Head of the Dragon = Gryffindor = Caput Draconis
J & Ben, love this podcast! Already one of my favorite shows to listen/watch. I myself was 11 years when the movies came out, and then I started reading the books.
Breakfast: Hash Browns
Fast Food: French Fries
Fancy Meal: Baked Potato (my personal favorite)
Holidays: Mashed Potatoes
Picnic: Potato Salad
Snack at Home: Chips
Party: Vodka
I borrowed some of that list from a meme I saw a while back but it still stands.
Take care!
I never listen to podcasts, But this is amazing! I LOVE this, always watch the supercuts all the way through!

It could likely be him forcing the dream because we do see that later on Harry would go on to experience something similar but even more drastic later on in the series where Harry is getting visions from Voldemort.
This analysis is way way more thorough than it has any right to be, my lord.
I love it.

You guys have made me look forward to Sundays even more
The biggest surprise when i heard that you guys are number 1 in Lebanon for books podcast since I really believe i must be the only one in Lebanon who watches the pod 😂😂🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧
Potatoes are a staple food in the EU in general. So it makes sense that there are a lot of different potato dishes at the feast.
Ah, Ric and Sal....such good friends. Buddies, pals even!
Hermione is not a hatstall, her sorting did take over four minutes. The only hatstalls that Harry Actually meets in their series is Minerva McGonagall and Peter Pettigrew. I let them slide last time they said this but now that they have mentioned it twice I feel obligated to point this out.
It was super cool to see the thought that went into the dragon theory! Very fun episode
Filch is one solid poltergeist if ever was one, which he's not 😂
Given that Molly names the caretaker before Filch one Apolleon Pringle oh and Mcgonagall mentioned that Filch has only been at Hogwarts for 25 yrs (by the time of the battle of Hogwarts comes around)
Yes! The idea that Filch is a poltergeist is, IMO, the single stupidest theory I've ever seen from SCB. I have two theories about him:
Otherwise all the non magical work the Muggles do would make nearly every Witch or Wizard highly powerful 😅
That would then discount that Magic is passed through genetics.
Something I have been thinking about, and something you said in this episode;
What would happen if a dementor kissed Voldemort, or someone who had horcruxes?
It's very cleverly set up by J.K.Rowling about the Quirrel/Snape dilemma. You're right

I absolutely love this channel. Really helps getting through work
Sorting always came across to me as a secret initiation for the new students. They'd make a point of not writing it down anywhere such as _Hogwarts, a History._ If you've attended Hogwarts you know already and if you haven't it's kept private, to delight the next generation.
