Mostly All the Truck,s from the 1970, were good looking! Yes the 9500 GMC,s were very nice looking truck,s. I was lucky enough to have the chance to get to drive one, my Grandfather had one with a Screaming V12 Detroit Diesel. and a 13spd.
I grew up in the 70's in these trucks. My dad hauled fuel in Detroit with Doubles, and man these old Detroits could PULL! My dad loved his GMC so much, when they were buying new trucks, he didn't want one. He kept his old Jimmy. Yes sir. Thank you for this video. Memory lane. Love you Dad. ❤️
My dad had a 74 9500 log truck with a prentice 110 log loader behind the cab. Hauled a lot of logs over the years with it,that engine outlasted the truck, then was used as a powerplant for the sawmill.great engines!
After that my dad bought a brand new 79 gmc general with a silver 92 he ordered it with the hp upgrade. Man that truck would pull,4 tone blue metallic paint ,twin stacks .this was the first of my career and I've never driven a better truck!
I have fond memories of big GMC trucks. When I was 13 I learned to drive a 1951 970 jimmy 671 with 5 speed and a 3 speed brownie, 15 gears in total. Great truck and a kids dream to drive it. Love the truck look forward to future videos. Thank you.
I remember that Winn Dixie grocery chain had bunches of these when I was a kid, also yellow freight had tons of them running in south Carolina. What's the price on this truck if you still have it?.
My brother had a truck like long hood model ran for curry coal company ran all Illinois Kentucky Missouri Indiana .he use to wake me up at 400 Am take me with him I was 12 13 years old sroyy I talking to much it the best year of my life hanging with my brother & his truck thank u so much on this GMC 9500 viedo 😎🚛
My dad had a two tone blue long hood one of these with a 318 when I was a kid. He had drivers in it hauling hot liquid asphalt out of Mobile, AL up to Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham asphalt plants. He drove his 71' Cabover White Freightliner with a 318 Detroit. At that time he also had a Long nose White Western Star with a V8 903 Cummings. Loved those trucks!! Wish I had one of them today. ,,,, Great video except for the sound when he was driving it. You have a new subscriber here. Thanks.
I drove this Truck for Millwood Trucking Co, Memphis, she sounded so sweet, I loved driving that truck. The fifth wheel was further back. We ran Traitors and shipping containers to and from the Railroad companies. Damn I loved that truck, it was a pleasure going to work

I owned a GMC bridlgadier tractor bought from Yellow Freight and had it converted to an 8yd heated dump with air tailgate, painted two tone grey had 6n71 Detroit with 10 sp road ranger. Had highway gearing and would cruise all day at 80 plus mph. The fuel to noise maker comment still is making me chuckle. Love the program.
Hello Dane trucker lounge another fantastic video of gmc truck do remember shoprite grocers out of eizbetbeth NJ. had same exact gmc but there color was red.
Sears & Roebuck had a fleet of these trucks my cousin that was an excavator bought one to pull a lowboy with it still had the sears emblem on the door always loved the sound of that 318
Your Cad makes me want to find another 1972-73 (I've had several in the past) Like the people you meet in your travels, Wayne is an awesome person as well. In recent years I've grown to like the Dayton wheels a lot more. In Arizona most trucks came with Budds and we called the Daytons "eastern" wheels. Detroits sure sing some beautiful music!!!
I do love the Daytons as they just look more like "business" to me. I didn't know that about the east/west designation. SEE I love learning from all you veterans.
First "semi" truck I learned to drive in 1973. Straight truck with a box for grain and I towed a John Deere 7700 combine on a custom-built trailer. Loved crossing over to big boy trucks and drove big trucks for the next 46 years. I drive motorcoaches (bus) these days.
I just found your channel. I really enjoy everything you feature. I'm from Pittsburgh and remember most of the places you go to. As far as a grocery chain using that truck. In Cleveland there was a warehouse named Seaway that used those exact trucks. I believe that may be who you be thinking of. Keep up the great work. I love the caddy. I had a sixty four that I lost in a flood. I've been driving for thirty three years, including a number of years with the grocery chain Giant Eagle. They actually owned the old Seaway terminal I referred to.
I'm from Cleveland. I remember these running for Seaway. I think the Pick & Pay stores also used them. There was also a small grocery chain around here named Fazio's that used to run red 9500's. They ran 318s.
I remember Winn Dixie super markets used to run these for years...and then updated them with the newer models Brigadere later on all detroits..then the alot county road n bridges deoartment in texas had them...a friend of mine bought one at a municaple aution 88 gmc detroit was a county yars truck and 3,400 miles on it.
The short nosed conventionals had everything packed in under the hood along w/ the kitchen sink, Ha! Ha! In many of the short noses, the Cummins engines sat angled in the frame for clearance. A lot of the engine work was done by taking off the dog house. The Dodge short noses had a filler panel in under the cab as it was raised to accomo- date the 318 Detroit when ordered. If I remember correctly, the Brockway 359 and 700 series short noses sat high w/ D.D. V-8 power.
My first diesel i drove was a 1983 G.M.C. Astro cabover with an 8V92 Detroit silver 400,a 13 speed, and no a/c,dual air intake and 1 exhaust pipe. Still 3/4 deaf from running it lol. After 35 years I still miss it. Simple times and trucks.

Hi Dane, that 318 sounds great. Loved those GMC 9500’s, they also had a 7500 with duel headlights on them, I use to see a lot of those GM trucks pulling lowboys with big bulldozers on the trailer. My friend from Chardon, his dad was a long haul trucker when my friend was younger and he said he owned a 1973 Freightliner cabover with a turbocharged 318 Detroit in it. Detroit’s were built for boats mainly then people started putting them in trucks and buses. A lot of fire trucks ran Detroit’s also.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE my dad drove for Publix for 30 years, always IHCs then he got a GMC Brigadier and finished his career in ‘98 driving a Volvo.
Began driving these GMC trucks (short hood and long hood) at age 14 and drove them for years before eventually going bigtime into the larger sleeper road tractors. They were "the fleet" favorite and mine too and now at 57 y.o. was thinking it would be fun to drive one of these again around the block, maybe a few dozen times. The vast majority of these came with Detroit 671 inline sixes, a few with Detroit 871 V8's, and a few more with the Cummins 270/290 inline sixes. I like all of them but the Cummins 290 with the PT pump turned up was the nicest and quietest. Of course, it has to be a 13-speed regardless of engine no doubt about that. My dream truck would be this short hood 9500 with a Freightliner back clip (tall airbags), a Cummins NTC Bigcam 400 and 13-speed Roadranger. I just sold my long time Intl 9400i big bunk Eagle, moved to southern Tennessee and found a new job driving spotter truck hopefully to retirement. I'll never buy another big truck but it would be a joy to get to drive one of these GMC trucks again for the hell of it.
Oh man you have an old school cool pedigree there Driver! Hat tipped for sure. I’m partial to the iconic look and sound of these with the 671 like this one. You bet it’ll have a straight pipe too. Lol.
My old man had a ‘70 Mack RS700L with a 318 13 speed Roadranger. Would do 80 mph on the highway I remember it well. It would be nice to buy this truck just to hear it run and bring back my childhood memories from 7-18 years old riding to the lumber Mills way up in Northern Maine
ABF, Ryder Commercial Carriers Division (the car carrier for GM for decades), Signal Delivery ( the contract carrier for Sears, Roebuck and Co.) and Gordon's Transports all had the GMC/ Chevy 9500.
Hey Dane, I know up here in Michigan there was a grocery outfit called Capistar out of Lansing that had blue tractors and did have a couple of GMCs in the fleet, don’t know if it’s possible that it’s one of the old tractors they had or not,not that far from Ohio. I drove for a produce distributor out of Cincinnati called Crosset and used to see Capistar trucks on my run in Michigan, knew one of the drivers as he went to some of the same stores I did,you never know could be one of the trucks .Love the Chanel Dane ,take care buddy,Kurt
I was around of alot of the those 9500 GMC trucks growing up and loved the style of them a few companies had whole fleets of them in my area old fox fertilizer co.Enfield CT.
No I meant your Cadillac with the dash brake light illuminated. I have a 92' Allegro 34ft motor home that had that problem. I had brake problems too & thought the light indicated it, but it was just the wire from the electric switch on the equalizer block shorted out on the engine block because it had been poorly routed.
Is that truck stop at exit one and Interstate 90 sitting in the southeast corner? I spent a lot of time waiting for oversize permits to come across the Telex.
My brother law bought a new HM9500 long nose with a factory coffin sleeper in 1972. 8V-71 with a RTO 9513 tranny.. Sqhd Rockwell differentials. Reyco springs in the rear on 20's. It was a rather long wheel base tractor.
Beautiful 9500, loved the western long hood version of this truck, Texaco at the Buckeye Arizona Tank Farm facility had a western double tanker that was a longhood driven by a blonde, it had dual everything chromed to the nines, powered by a rare 12V71N Detroit Diesel with a 13spd double Ott tranny. Would love to own this tractor but who's got deep pockets anymore and to get it financed is out of the question.
As far as the sleepers on them. When I was a kid in the 80s one of my neighbors was a owner op and he had one of these with a sleeper. Now over 30 years later I don't remember for sure if it was a long hood but I do remember it was this cab and hood with a sleeper. It was a small coffin sleeper but it had one.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE I've drove a pete with a 36 flat top unibuilt. There was zero room just a bed behind the seats. Never drove one of the old ones that u crawled threw what would be the back window on a day cab. Never wanted to either. Bet it was weird for sure.
Most all these old girls have a very limited, if at all parts availability through the traditional channels. However, lots of good resources on the many old trucks Facebook pages. A very big one is "Dying Breed Diesels" very friendly and clean page and its huge. Thanks for watching.
@@robertwatkins364 I have split rim daytons on my B4000 and not a lot of people will mess with them, but it shouldn’t be a problem with a tire cage. So idk why
Hi Dane, On the brake light is your parking brake slightly pushed in, my car was doing the same thing and the mechanic said it was the parking brake. I would love to have a 1966 two door Cadillac deville. I love the stack headlights on the car and it looks really good with the big whitewall tires on it.

My old man had a blue one and hauled cross country refer and flat bed for 5 years before adding a mercury sleeper slept across the seats when he slept. then hauled wood with it before selling it in the early 90s

you've got another new subscriber ,, thanks for bringing us this video ,, i love old trucks and GMC trucks are my particular favorites ,,i currently own several old trucks ,,the oddest one of them all is a GMC crackerbox COE built in 1965 it currently has an 8V-71 detroit /AKA 318 although it was originally equipped with a V12 gasoline engine ,,the other really odd one i have is a daily driven FORD COE C-600 1974 model it was originally an ice delivery truck i was told , i bought it at a farm auction and partially restored it ,the original 429 FE engine was junk and has been replaced with a 1999 model 7.3 liter powerstroke diesel engine ,,it has a 7 speed transmission which is odd for a COE of this era and doesn't have a 2 speed axle also odd ,most of these has a 4+2 setup ,,either way it's a head turner ,, i found a 1974 model ford pickup box that i made fit on it so it looks like a pickup truck ,it actually turns better that a standard 8ft box pickup truck

You have very cool trucks and tractors. Great engines. There are still trucks in Russia, but mostly they are Freightliner Columbia, Cascadia, international 9700, Volvo VNL. Pretty boring, but hardy for Russian roads. Thank you for such videos, let's say so to touch the American classics.
I've seen a sleeper on them got to run the stacks behind the sleeper. But back in 73 the length laws were for bumper to bumper. 55ft and or 60 ft. Hence the short hood conventionals and short wb cabovers. I'd take a small bunk COE over a daycab long noze. Easier to take naps.
I remember those trucks growing up in the 70s when they would pass by my house , two of those trucks I really remembered where Jimmy T Wood trucking had one pulling scrap iron in a dump trailer and SartainsRoad Masters pulling a box van both had the Detroit screaming Jimmy...I miss those trucks.
First truck I owned wss a 1975 9500, 318, 13 spd. Strangely enough it would pull great on the hills and had a good top end. It would motor. Just hauled tankers in Ontario Canada - 125000lbs gross

Lol.
When I was 22 I bought a new 1985 GMC 9500 and put a military wrecker bed on it
Thanks for watching!
And THATS what it’s all about in my opinion. Thanks for watching
G'day mate nothing like the sound of a G M great video keep up the good work all the best
Thank you Peter!
I grew up when this truck came off the line it's a shame that there dyeing off i do love to hear old trucks restored and running
ABF, Ryder Commercial Carriers Division (the car carrier for GM for decades), Signal Delivery ( the contract carrier for Sears, Roebuck and Co.) and Gordon's Transports all had the GMC/ Chevy 9500.
Thanks for watching!
It just could be Kurt, hat tipped to your service too. Thanks for watching 😬
Worked at the Chevrolet Warren plant back in the early 70s and the plant used these in the fleet
I bet they did, and the Chevy version more than likely. Thanks for watching.
I was around of alot of the those 9500 GMC trucks growing up and loved the style of them a few companies had whole fleets of them in my area old fox fertilizer co.Enfield CT.
Thanks for watching!😬
I think the 1st truck I can remember driving was a 68 / 9500 . Had a 318 Detroit 13 speed. Pulled a 36 ft Hopper Bottom.
Did you check the wire from your brake equalizer to make sure it wasn't shorted out?
If you’re referring to Wayne’s 9500 he sold it shortly after the video was made. I assume that’s what you meant? Thanks
One ok the roughest trucks I ever drove,
And the loudest even with two mufflers.
Your speaking my language lol. Thanks for watching
Is that truck stop at exit one and Interstate 90 sitting in the southeast corner? I spent a lot of time waiting for oversize permits to come across the Telex.
It sure is... that’s it!😬👍
That KWhop is going to be a premium ride when he gets to it
Also sold this one
My brother law bought a new HM9500 long nose with a factory coffin sleeper in 1972. 8V-71 with a RTO 9513 tranny.. Sqhd Rockwell differentials. Reyco springs in the rear on 20's. It was a rather long wheel base tractor.
Boy those long hoods sure had a unique and mean look to them!😬👍
Beautiful 9500, loved the western long hood version of this truck, Texaco at the Buckeye Arizona Tank Farm facility had a western double tanker that was a longhood driven by a blonde, it had dual everything chromed to the nines, powered by a rare 12V71N Detroit Diesel with a 13spd double Ott tranny. Would love to own this tractor but who's got deep pockets anymore and to get it financed is out of the question.
They did look sooooooo cool for sure! Thanks for watching
Being claustrophobic myself I just can't imagine lol! Thanks for watching.
Are parts still available for these old trucks or when they break your screwed
Most all these old girls have a very limited, if at all parts availability through the traditional channels. However, lots of good resources on the many old trucks Facebook pages. A very big one is "Dying Breed Diesels" very friendly and clean page and its huge. Thanks for watching.
I haven't seen Dayton wheels in forever.
I love Daytons
@@sc1338 Me too, but they were supposed to be dangerous.
It may be, I've tried releasing it but same result. Thanks. Love the 66 too!
Good job .. another nice rig..
Thank you, it’s a gem for sure. Now residing in New England. Thanks for watching
Man, I just found your channel here. I'm an 0ld Retired truck driver of 44 years. I have a Very Safe Driving record, over 7 Million miles without an accident There ain't to many that can that with these damn New Driver(wannbe divers)My dad was a Truck Driver too. I remember as a little kid in the summer time I ride with my Dad. His Newest truck was a 1961 Diamond T. I can remember when I got home from school that day and First laid eyes on that Big Red "T" W0W that was a the actual start of ME wanting to Drive 'Em. My 0ld Story would be So Long to try to put much here. I Sub'ed and I Like this video also. I did just buy an 1978 Chevy C-60 to putter around with here in my shop in fact I pick it up tomorrow or the next day? Not shore yet..
Awesome story Bro. We are bros in blue it appears. Retired though and playin with trucks lol. Maybe we can get your story and some pics possibly some day at the Truckers Lounge or somewhere? Where you located?
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE I'm in East Texas. Yes I was in Law Enforcement for some Years and still drove a truck. I hauled Cows locally when I got out of my Police Car.
@@DannyWalker1949 wow that’s quite a history! Respect 🙏
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE Thank You Sir‼
@@DannyWalker1949 Great job, guys! Our former sheriff was a trucker before he got into law enforcement and continued to drive when he had time off. He just loved it. He had a '74 International 4200 with a 318 in it. He is in his 80s now but he still likes the old iron.
I drove one of those back in the mid 70's for a company in Ontario Canada. lol
Thank you for watching 😀
Which company I live in Ontario Canada
@@tommoutis3442 I doubt if the company exists anymore, it was ICL, International Carriers out of Windsor, my yard was In Hamilton.
I loved this video and I'm a new subscriber... I love these old trucks with the Detroit 2 strokes in them. Keep up with the content man I'm loving it.
Thanks for watching!
My old man had a blue one and hauled cross country refer and flat bed for 5 years before adding a mercury sleeper slept across the seats when he slept. then hauled wood with it before selling it in the early 90s
Heard he has a general also is it for sale
No he’s been fixing on it. You’ll see it soon on the channel. Thanks for watching
I drove one of those for almost 10 years.
Well you sure could weigh in on em I’m sure. Thanks for watching
30 mph up hill and 80 mph down hill. FREEZE your A$$ off in the winter when you pulled over at idle....
BTW....That speedo is not a 74 model....looks like a late 70's they used on the Brigadier.
Great video I drove one like this one with the 671 in it great truck I like the old trucks to thanks for sharing 👍
I know these are so iconic! Thank you for watching!😊
Great video , keep em coming
Thank you Rich!
That’s a modern looking design for a 1973 tractor.
I really like the quad headlight model too
Awesome truck , I live about a mile away from him .
Wow! You got to enjoy it more than the rest of us then. Lol. Thanks for watching 😬
They did make long nose sleepers. You’re right, they also made this short nose, in tandem and single axle setups.
what truck are you driving in the first part
That was my 74 Peterbilt 352. I sold it last year.
I grew up in Westchester County and saw a lot of these hauling cars for anchor motors coming out if Tarrytown, New York from the big GM plant. They had the 6_71 238 hp screaming Jimmy's
I remember the car carriers with these as well. If it’s the same company I’m thinking of they were like a turquoise color weren’t they?
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE I I f memory serves Anchor car haulers were Yellow.
The turquoise one where Stevens
Anchor got swallowed up by Ryder.
Now the big car hauler is Jack Cooper.
I passed lots of them in my mack superliner blew their doors off lol
@@jerrykinnin7941 I think anchor went bankrupt in 2005 when gm closed their plant in linden nj
@@ernestpassaro9663 An E-9 Mack is a shit load bigger than a 6-71
I remember WINN DIXIE grocery stores using those GMC’s and I think they were painted Green with the WINN DIXIE LOGO.
you've got another new subscriber ,, thanks for bringing us this video ,, i love old trucks and GMC trucks are my particular favorites ,,i currently own several old trucks ,,the oddest one of them all is a GMC crackerbox COE built in 1965 it currently has an 8V-71 detroit /AKA 318 although it was originally equipped with a V12 gasoline engine ,,the other really odd one i have is a daily driven FORD COE C-600 1974 model it was originally an ice delivery truck i was told , i bought it at a farm auction and partially restored it ,the original 429 FE engine was junk and has been replaced with a 1999 model 7.3 liter powerstroke diesel engine ,,it has a 7 speed transmission which is odd for a COE of this era and doesn't have a 2 speed axle also odd ,most of these has a 4+2 setup ,,either way it's a head turner ,, i found a 1974 model ford pickup box that i made fit on it so it looks like a pickup truck ,it actually turns better that a standard 8ft box pickup truck
Thank you for subscribing Bud, and I love your truck inventory. I am VERY partial to the Crackerboxes! would love to see it. I plan on doing a vid on my Subscribers pics at some point soon so send pics to my email if you like. soulman@gwcmail.net
Really nice truck 👍
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed this,,, thanks.
Thank you for watching
My father has asked if it is possible to contact Wayne about 9500s in his area?
He’s pretty busy with a weird work schedule. If you email me with what you need to know I can try and relay. Sdgraphics@gwcmail.net
Glad you enjoy, thank you for watching!! 😬👍
For sure lol. Thanks for watching!😬
We used to lay a 1x6 board on top of the driver seat and buddy seat...that was the bed.
Ok dean
I never saw that older 4-71 truck you promised.
4-71?
I remember those trucks growing up in the 70s when they would pass by my house , two of those trucks I really remembered where Jimmy T Wood trucking had one pulling scrap iron in a dump trailer and SartainsRoad Masters pulling a box van both had the Detroit screaming Jimmy...I miss those trucks.
Sweet memories, thanks for watching 😬
First truck I owned wss a 1975 9500, 318, 13 spd. Strangely enough it would pull great on the hills and had a good top end. It would motor. Just hauled tankers in Ontario Canada - 125000lbs gross
Sweet! Hat tipped to ya driver. Thanks for watching
Beautiful old school
Yes sir, Thanks for watching 😊
