Technical consultant: Joe Maser... Mechanic, Truck builder and racer. The man has forgotten more about 2 stroke Detroit motors than we will ever know.
Look up the Cornfield Corvette, he was making black smoke way before black smoke was cool...

I took a driving test in one of these. It was 100 degrees, no A/C. The instructor told me to turn around after 2 blocks, "I can't ride in this thing. You pass."
@oldrustycars Your lucky, I took my test in a 76’ 90 series Chevy, 318 13 spd, and the driving instructor burned her arm on the pipe getting in, needless to say she put me thru hell!
I leaned how to drive on the Chevrolet version , 671 and a 10 speed hauling wheat in Perryton, TX
😆
LOL excellent
I got to drive one of those with a V12 Detroit that's what we had back in the day and we loved them, the snot-nosed bunch of fucking steering wheel holders having a clue and you wouldn't know a good truck with bit you on the ass
Dude, the first truck I drove way back in 75 was a 9500 Jimmy with a 6-71 Detroit and a 13 speed day cab! Loud, rode like crap, no power when loaded, just a peach! Did not take me long to switch to a 71 Diamond Reo, 6-71, 13 speed day cab! Same thing but a touch more comfortable! About a month in that truck, and I started eyeing a 68 Diamond Reo with a 250 Cummins and a twin stick 4 by 4 my boss had out in the weeds! He said it ran when they parked it out there, but no one wanted to drive it because of the twin stick. I took some fresh batteries out to it, pulled the compression release, turned it over till i saw oil pressure, shoved the CR back in, that old Cummins came to life! Drove it out of the weeds to the shop, put new tires on it, checked everything over, and started hauling Road oil in a tanker with it! Been a Cummins man ever since!
You may need to "Excite" that alternator, to get it to start working again. I know you have already dealt with this, but if you saved it, it may still be good!
I know everybody loves the Cummins but you can't beat the sound of a Detroit.
I just love it when an old 2 stroke comes roaring back to life!
That has to be the most original untouched Detroit left on earth. 😮
My Dad retired from GM Truck & Bus in 1990. I remember as a kid in 1968(10 yrs old) going with my Mom to pick my Dad up from work, I remember seeing these GMC 9500 in the lot waiting to be delivered, seen many GMC Generals....
Same what plant? My dad retired from Pontiac MI truck and bus.
@@keepontruckinoutlawlife1248 I worked there for a few years, before it closed.
@@garybrown4671 ya it's a damm shame it's closed
Good to see you again. That’s how my 6v71 1974 Diamond Reo starts, just a touch of the key. I will be following your adventure and it is an adventure!
Maybe he takes off alot
Love the aesthetics of the GMC 9500. Robust looking truck.
I'm building a camper this would be perfect for this old 40 yr truck driver still want to smell the diesel fumes plus I drove one of those for 3yrs I love them
Glad to know Everyone is ok. Miss Your videos but totally understand. Especially in this world we're living in now unfortunately.. Looks like You found a Gem in the Rough ..Great Video Sir ..
I love the old 671's. Great sounding engine. Good looking truck
I agree!
Nice meeting you at Frieghtliner, they finally got me running.
Glad They got you on the ROAD!!
welcome back we missed you and Joe with all your antics.
I drove one of those 28yr ago as a dump truck those were the days 😅
Love that jimmy spent manny days and knights
Good to see you back again making videos my dad was a owner operator he had a 1989 brigadier I hope I spelled that right it was red good truck until it dropped injector then the motor was gone after that he got a cab over GMC Astro he run that 4 a bunch years then the turbo went out Then he said that’s it he went out of business I thought you might want to hear the. Story be safe
So you mean he went out of the business because he had to do maintenance on his trucks. Sounds to me he ran horrible equipment or did he think he could run a truck forever and not have a part fail.
Congrats to finding such a nice truck. Where I am, I only find rust-jacked, cancerous, circling-the-drain-of-eternal-death non-runners that had the last will to live sucked out of them a long time ago. An "old" truck here is from the 1990'!
Glad to see you back, missed watching your videos.
That's awesome!!!! See you have Joe out there working!!!! Thanks!
What a nice old truck. Great find. Thanks for sharing.
wjhat a detroit that does not leak oil or make you deaf, and using a leaf blower to clean it out ,priceless, gotta ; love old iron
Making some cab & frame crossmember modifications to mount a Link cab mate air ride suspension would greatly improve the overall ride quality of the truck. Some air ride high back seats and installing some air bags on the front axle will also improve the ride quality of the truck.
Great video glad to see you back I know life gets in the way
Holy crap. We had one of these as a wrecker in Pusan Korea. I was an 88M and only one of two that drove the wrecker. Had a 15 speed with the derp reduction on the dash. I pulled a twin sctew International with a 40 foot trailer loaded with frozen meat, milk, cheese and butter 50 miles back to PSF to be unloaded and reloaded on three different trucks. The International broke down and it was an interesting ride old school wrecker with twin booms but it had diffs on it. The load was too heavy so took full advantage of that deep reduction. It actually had Jakes on it too. And a big ass V Drtroit.
In Pusan we didnt have the Tactical vehicles. Everything in our motorpool was commercial. Cherokees, GMC trucks a little newer than Big Fuck aka the wrecker. Two Internationals and 2 Daewoo busses and a little Hyundai Bongo Bus. We actually worked more than trained in Korea at that time. Running Rations, Shuttles and Taxis.
I am reminiscing a bit but thanks for the memories. But that old Jimmy would scream at 70 mph maybe because it was a wrecker. The speed limit on what we call interstates in Korea was 100 KPH. 62 mph.
I was raised up with one like that but ours had a 318 Detroit and a 13 speed!!! Dad said they had one just like that one with the 671 Detroit,I love the 318 and a 13 speed
This is great love it. Keep us posted on this beast please..
That ol beauty came from Pasco, WA. I seen it sit in that same spot off court street for 20 years.
Welcome back!! Glad to see you posting another video.
Great to see you back . Cheers mate 🇦🇺
Glad to see you finally come back and make another video I like your videos a lot. I live by Des Moines Iowa keep making more videos I'd like to see the end of this one good luck and Merry Christmas to you all heavy duty
my uncle who died a week ago was a 2 stroke detroit specialist in the 70s & 80s. when he died, i thought of the dying art of setting up a rack on the old engines.he learned how to work on them in the service.was in his shop i first ever saw a 8V92 with a 8 inch hole in the block from a rod going thru it.he was putting another engine in the truck.im guessing the driver let it roll down a hill into an overspeed condition.i never had one over 2150, & never had a problem.
Towing company I worked for had an old IH daycab tractor with a 6v71 in a barn. They used to turn it down for emmisions testing and then turn it back up after it passed. The two former owners passed away and the son took over and nobody knew how to work on it. It was a shame. We got the old girl going one day and pulled it into the shop and washed it. It was a minty old truck. Think they sold it years later
I have a 97 c7500 gmc . Love the truck
Drove on for O’Hare Towing back in the early 80’s. Had a 750 Holmes wrecker body with a 290 Cummins and a 13 speed. I could pickup a tractor-trailer and fly back to Chicago. Big wreckers the best way to get CDL then because there were no schools.
The second I saw you posted a video I instantly clicked on it to watch! It’s been a while!
That 6-71 is humming beautiful sound
On three of them in my career. All 671 last one I had was somewhat of a show truck that I bought from a guy in LA had everything on it you could ever hang on one. Heated adjustable mirrors power windows air slide fifth ect. She leaked oil scream like a banshee but always brought me home drove it until California made me get rid of it. Haven't had one is Dependable since
Good to know ur still in the game, stay happy n healthy.kinda reminds me of coops mustang content he was in process of rebuilding his late fathers mach mustang and knew very little mechanics, his older brother was mentoring him thru it,well i gquess his bro got vaccines for covid, had complications and passed, just this week he posted he was selling the project because it caused him heartache to be reminded of fun with bro who was now gone.so he posted why he has been awol all this time.he may return when he heals and maybe not!!!anyhow we understand utubers have there own life to live and to grieve how they must.best regards on ur return.mr.snooky aka snooky pa.💥👍🤪😜👍💥
Hi very first time watching your channel. Very enjoyable & educational content. Thank you .
Anxious to see how this ends
Me too or maybe not 😕
Ominous piano cords ♬ dom dom ♩ dom doooooom🥺
Thanks Danny
my dad always talks about the detroits slobbering oil if you let them idle too long, so hes right.
Can I buy I life size autographed poster of Joe? That should cover the hole from the fire I accidently set.
About time you showed your face, I was getting worried.
Welcome back
Your from Wisconsin, cool,I'm from Wisconsin nice truck, looks like an old 13- or 18-speed
Good to see you again
Good to see you back!
Great to see you back
How the heck are you I missed you. Hope you had a great Christmas. I wish you a happy New year. That's some truck. Just love sound of the engine. 👍🤙
Great looking Machine.
Welcome back man! Missed your videos!
Way cool to see that running. Looks Mean!
Hermoso camión, un clasico de los 70,s 👏👏👏😉
Cool ol' GMC!! 👍👍
Nice truck ! Those engines just keep going but do require regular maintenance. Straight 40 weight oil is what they need. Bus Grease Monkey is the specialist on 2 stroke Detroit engines. Good luck with the truck. Have a Blessed Day
Nice to see your still buying screaming detroits and had time to post👍
What a beautiful machine
Best not to idle these engines or wet stacking and stuck rings occur
They need to get a load and get hot .
In marina we had guys idle them in boats at dock and not take them out in bay .
Would be all loaded up carbon and stuck rings diesel in crankcase oil .
Nice truck !
I love these old trucks. Can you do all the upgrades like in snow runner 😁
Good ol' Joe.
I thought I recognized him in the first part of the video...."late at night, under the truck setting the brakes" made it obvious....that's how Joe rolls.
damn thought you gave up making videos, awesome to see you back
I drove a GMC tandem dump with a 6v53 5/4 trans, not very fast but a screamer.
Nice Opel gt in the background!!!!
OMFG he's back!
The greatest creator on UA-cam is BACK!!! I’m so happy to see you again man!
Such a cool truck
Used to drive one of these in the northeast, uncomfortable noisy beast of a truck!!
Glad to have you back. Thnks for all you do.❤️ By the way, you mentioned the day job? You come up missing long enough to be a secret agent or a mercanary or something. Good to see Joe❤️that old guy. Hes forgot more about Detroits than most people ever knew. Glad to hear you still have the Potatoe Farm in Wisconsin. Love them mountains in your videos❤️
I love them old trucks
good job, man
I would love to find one of these BIG TRUCKS as a project ... Seattle area
There are tons up here as we have no rust and the ports. Often things come here to get shipped overseas and the shipping is too expensive to the sit somewhere
Ok I have one of these trucks my truck is a 1970 or 71 Chevy air brakes two axle dump truck 4 yard it has no engine , it is a gas engine only truck and it none tilt hood , it regular hood opening with fenders , im not interested in put a Diesel in it , im in California, lol thank you .praise Jesus Christ grace grace grace amen 🙏
A great find in your GMC. Onward!
Love the 6-71
Beautiful truck!
Welcome back dude!
I'm jealous... Nice 😎
Bostrom makes a low profile air ride seat for that cab, I have many miles in a GMC brigadeer with one and I am 6 foor 6 inches
i need to find one of these to build my welding rig, at this point im willing to take one thats just cab and frame. hard to find in decent enough shape to rebuild
That thing is so bad ass.
Welcome back.
The precursor to the Brigadier!
Pool Noodled up ready to go.
Just beautiful
Wow it’s been along time
I just started fallowing your Channel I love old Detroit engines My father was a diesel mechanic for years. He worked for manure spreader company almost all the trucks had Detroit 8V-71 in them they were some screaming engines, Was that a Buick Opel in your shop? Good luck on the build of this cool old GMC.
First truck I drove to the shop for a pm sweating bullets my dads boss standing on the fuel tank telling me it was time to learn I was 12
thats almost the same truck i cut my "trucking teeth" with 238 detroit with a 13 spd....sweet ride, probably why im hard a hearing....
So what happened to the big Detroit you got started on the last vid way back and the cab over Ford with the beaver tail bed?AL B.
Hendrickson walking beam suspension that’ll cause some back problems
You should name that truck Big Twinkie and have Ernie Hudson sign it.
What do expect , this isn't Japan where the vehicles almost never breakdown. Here in America tow truck drivers sit along side the roads and highways like vultures ready to tow our junk so they can capitalize . That is the way it is and it will always be that way. Truck shops expect you to break down a lot here so they make $150- $200 an hour off of our crap that is made right here in the USA. So the usa manufactures know not to make stuff to good or the roadside vultures will go hungry. Plus if they made trucks too good you won't come back to buy another one.
6-71 Detroit diesel aka the driptroit diesel they say those 2 stroke detroits made more HP than the 4 strokes of that time
You said you checked the injector rack and then later on you say the rocker cover's never been off or not in a very long time. How'd you check the rack then?
Simple, Check the throttle and the stop... Old style has no yield link so you can feel if the rack is stuck.
Also it has an emergency stop door so easy to choke if it tries to run.
Hard to find anyone who can tune those two strokes anymore.
Been wondering about you bud!
Still Kickin! :)
O-H-I-O Porter greetings.🇺🇸 Happy New Year! This is one quite unusual GMC! Will It Start..Oh, this is running so well that I just wanna take it home! So there!🤩 I bet you were a bit shocked, huh?! The body looks like it is in really good shape! That’s a bit unusual. I love the hitch you added to it.🥰 What is the mechanism in front of the 5th wheel? Is that some kind of hydraulic lifter for the 5th wheel? What a find!! Really looking forward seeing more of this fine old truck! You must have a shirt in the charging system or something is really draining it. Keep it coming & be safe out there!🥰😎✌️
Did you make it or what
WICKED KOOL. 🇺🇸👍
cann't let those engines idle much, those oil leaks should stop once you hit the highway
