      @@danlevesque5437 the ball joints started seizing and actually cracking the knuckle. Due to no flex when going over uneven terrain,(I.e. potholes, speed bumps, etc.) there are certain models not affected. There’s a couple different recalls. Some are built with bushings instead of ball joints. Some have one of each due to replacement of cracked knuckle.

    The 2016 Explorer Sport has the exact same setup. I took my car to Firestone today to install my winter tires and align all 4 wheels. They didn't know how to make the adjustment. I ended up leaving with only a front aligned because I believe they didn't set the computer up correctly and choose the police interceptor when they programmed the alignment computer. I only say that because the sport closely mimics the interceptor. They printed the picture of the diagram with old school design and told me to ask Ford why my vehicle doesn't have the toe adjustment bar in the rear. I knew this had to be on UA-cam and I will be sure to show the boys at Firestone your video after I take it to Ford complete the service. Best part, I got my tires installed and front alignment for free.

    These new toe links look like they will easily be knocked out of adjustment compared to the original positive lock design. I can't tell from the video if the ends of the metal tubes in the bushings are serrated to "bite" into the links. I think Ford should have come out with a beefier turnbuckle setup if fracturing is the problem. I am impressed with that remote screen on the alignment machine. That makes life easier when making rear suspension adjustments on todays multi-link rear suspensions.

    The problem is the 'ball joint' on the knucle that the arm gets bolted to gets seized up and doesn't allow the link to travel up and down freely, thereby putting stress on the arm, eventually leading to fracture or break. I recently was test driving a 2017 police utility (Explorer) when the left side link broke while traveling at around 45-50 mph on a ( luckily) rural road. It locked the wheel up for a second and caused the rear to kick out for a second. Scared the crap out of me thinking what if that happened on a high speed highway, like I was originally thinking of taking it. Had it towed to ford dealer and although the recall fix was to replace the links and if necessary, replace the knuckle if the 'ball joint' was seized. Ford refuses to cover the knuckle($318.00 my cost per side, along with any associated hardware) and won't do the recall without it being changed. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and plan to file a follow up, with possible legal action. Ford is horrible and the replacement links are junk. A Ford service manager I talked to said the same thing and noted the new 'improved' links were a joke, that they solved nothing. Apparently, some people will need to die before they seriously address the problem

    I just had mine done they had my 2012 explorer 3.5 for a week picked it up on a Friday drove to NY from md 700 miles round trip. Tues morning went back to the dealer to drop off because both tires were down to the metal. They said they did the alignment. They still have my truck and it's been a week they said they will replace the rear tires and try to do another alignment. All it will take is a pot hole to knock the alignment off. I have ordered the old tow links from rock auto to have my mechanic replace what Ford put on and go back to the old setup and parts were only 60 for both. My truck will never see a ford dealer again. I went in to fix a recall and come out with a oil leak and truck cutting tires never again.

So it took a week to knock the truck out of alignment. I have also noticed that alot of places are sold out of the rear tow links and Amazon went from 38 to 51 dollars for the part now. Yall better get them now before they are all sold out because most places it's a 5 to 8 week wait for the part.

    I never brought my 2013 explorer in for the toe link recall. What I did instead was buy Steeda adjustable links and independent alignment shop. So this is the problem with you taking this upon yourself instead of letting them address the situation
      The reason for the toe link recall was not just to replace the two links it was to inspect the bushing in the knuckle to make sure it was free because they are binding up and it's causing the knuckle to crack

    I had the toe link in my automobile recalled. The car was misaligned when it was finished, but this misalignment was permanent. Ford is unwilling to investigate this problem. I suppose it's because they are aware of the issue and don't want to address it. I took it to a different shop for alignment, but the results were essentially the same, so I presume it will never be perfect because the materials appear different.

      No, if the front was in alignment before they do the recall work, then it will still be in alignment after. If the front wasn't in alignment before the recall work, then it needs an alignment either way. If the front was in alignment and the back was not aligned properly and now the front looks off, time to re-check the rear alignment.
      Often what a shady shop will do, is state the front needs it and that isn't covered so they will have to pay for it, quick money for a vehicle already on a lift and being aligned. Ask questions.

    I find getting the required 111 ft/lbs on the outboard bolt and nut to be difficult. If I had more time, I would do the alignment, take the wheel and tire off and torque to spec.
    I like how you did this alignment, the way I have done it is lifting the vehicle on the alignment rack after getting my numbers and slowly let the rear down until it gets to the right adjustment.

      While it is an issue you should be aware of, those 3.5 duratec are very solid engines. With the overwhelming majority of owners reporting high mileage as in anywhere from 200-400k without major issues. At 50k, again, keep an eye on it,but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Thankfully, I don't think water pump issues are as common on newer 3.5s, I think they changed the timing chain design on the 3.5 for the explorers in like 2012, so you just missed out on that. From my understanding, 2012 and up 3.5s with this new timing chain design don't seem to really have this issue as much, if at all. Not sure why that's the case, I'm not a mechanic/engineer. I believe the water pump is driven by the timing chain, so that could explain why altering the timing chain design helped to reduce/resolve this issue.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 Рік тому

      @@KB-bh9hp I respectfully suggest that you don't know WTF you're talking about. The majority of owners with 200-400K mi on them, don't have the transverse mounted engine with the internal water pump. 2012 and up still have the issue, it was never resolved except when Ford went back to a longitudinal engine when Explorers went back to RWD-biased for 2020+ model years. The new timing chain design was in 2011 and that's when they switched from an external belt driven water pump to an internal one, so it was a terrible change not one that fixed anything (except giving them maybe a couple more inches clearance).
      At the same time, I wouldn't worry about it "yet" with only 50K mi on it, but I would do timely coolant system flushes and fills with the newer motorcraft yellow VC-13G coolant which is backwards compatible but wasn't the factory fill in '13. Also if it is AWD it is known to cook the PTU fluid so that should be changed every 30K mi or less under severe service conditions.
