- "Don't have a committee meeting about it, pop it on and send him out there!" said Martin Brundle as Ferrari faffed about looking for a tyre that had gone missing for Eddie Irvine's pit stop.
Was it part of that conspiracy that they were shafting him for Michael because they couldn't have Eddie winning a title before him? Up for you to decide. But it was part of the many things that made this race what it was. McLaren dropped the ball, Ferrari dropped the ball, everyone else crashed and Stewart GP finally won a race after three years.

I don't remember if you covered the French grand prix of that year in a video, but, it'd be interesting to look into something I heard about that race. This video about a gp being affected by weather reminded me that I heard Jordan had a guy out in a field a mile (or a few miles?) away from the magny cours circuit for the French gp in the direction the weather usually came from and that's how they were able to make the calls that lead to frentzen's win.

I'm not sure how Red Bull got on with their acustion, but I believe they may have won a race or two

Most people only know him as a commentator, but his story is so layered.
He went toe to toe with Senna in the lower formula's, won a le mans24, a daytona24, suffered atlease 4 crashes that he had no business walking away from & slipped seamlessly into the commentary box beside the legend that is....Murray Walker
He also raced in IROC, where he won a race and finished 3rd overall, the highest ever finish for a European driver..

Brundle deserves an entire series of videos. His story is fascinating.
Murray's commentary during that Irvine stop always made me laugh "Oh, I thought we had one when the rain started, well this is ludicrous, this has blown it for Irvine, blown it for Ferrari, I don't know what's happened, but there was a major mal-misorganisation problem there".

I'd rate Irvine's pit stop as being more entertaining in terms of commentary than "You hit the wrong part of him, my friend."
I was just a little kid when this race happened. The drama of 1999 blew my mind. This race is the pinnacle of the 1999 season. Calling it now Logan Sargent podium IF we get a race that’s got several weather changes & is completely chaotic
This race was insane, it seemed drivers that never podium-ed or teams that never had the opportunity to score points were bombing out of those spots left and right.
if you were to look back at the timing back then Badoer had a one minute pitstop when the rain came. Had not had that problem he would’ve been in a legitimate 2nd place. It is one of the most missed and underrated drives someone ever had
The Finnish commentator was convinced Badoer had cramps and therefore could not finish the race. He thought Badoer was stretching his leg as he actually was sobbing beside his car 😂

Back then, Minardi was _everybody's_ 2nd favorite team.
Early 90s Ferrari pitstops were like the Keystone Kops. Then Schumacher arrived, and must have said something. Irvine's stop was a last hurrah of that era. The funniest bit was when the fourth wheel finally arrived, and the right rear crew started arguing about it.
I also remember Stewart in floods after the chequered flag, and who can blame him?

Back in the days when Ireland's national broadcaster RTE used to cover the races live with Peter Collins (no not the f1 driver from the 1950s) on commentary accompanied by David Kennedy (a former f1 driver who was involved with the Mazda team the time the 787B won le Mans) and I used to watch religiously every Sunday that it was on. I was a huge Jordan fan and was bitterly disappointed that day. But it was one of the best post race top 3 press conferences because all three drivers were not regularly on the podium so their enthusiasm was genuine and we got none of the same ol' same ol' from the guys that were used to being there.
98 was a weird time. I was 12, just discovered F1 and European motorsports in general ( thank you cable TV). I was immediately a fan of Ferrari and the Michael. I was probably the only person in my town that watched F1, btcc, wrc, etc. 😅
BTCC from 1992-1999 will never be beat in terms of racing quality and on/off-track action. Best there ever was.
Hearing that about Herbert & Anderson’s weather reading tactics makes me think it’s moments like that that made the old days of F1 better, less tech assistance & more initiative & instincts. Plus louder engines & Murray Walker!

Man, Herbert's firwst and last wins were dramatic and full of heartbreak to varying degrees
His whole racing career is like that. A retrospective would be entertaining, apart from the Brands Hatch crash.
How he can still walk is a miracle.
@@JohnSmithShields Went back and checked, I thought he won more races but no, just three but yes I too would like a career retrospective on Johnny though, he always came across as a, well, Johnny the lad behind the wheel and then behind the mic. I forgot where he ended up in 2024 though. Last hurrah for him I remember was his plans for Indy in 2001 or 2002 that didn't pan out though.
If only Irvine had managed to catch Gene at the end. He’d have won the 99 championship.
Working for a motorsport company involved with SR at the time, I remember the Boss brought in a cake and Champagne for us to celebrate the win. Never got that again as Stewart became Jag😢
I remember watching Herbert reacting to his win, and describing watching a big black cloud over the pit straight.

This race is my favourite to this day, and one of the first I watched. I remember that night I used the recorder on my stereo to make a recorded cassette of my thoughts and commentary after the race and then I played it for my Mum and sister the morning after, before school that day.
This also seemed like a last hurrah for those privateer teams, in a way. Stewart turned into Jaguar and had a miserable 2000, and Prost's was even worse. Jordan also never really troubled the front of the grid again. Minardi would have one last mega triumph with Webber into Australia 2002 but otherwise trucked on for a few more years.
That season had some great races. Magny Cour was great too. I remember being so happy for Johnny
Fun fact: this race is almost 2 months older than Lando Norris (race happened on the 26th of September 1999 while Norris was born on the 13th of November 1999).

One of my all time favourite Grand Prix. So many heroes, so much heart ache. Luca Badoer so close to scoring good points for Minardi. They really punched above their weight. The guys at Minardi did a hell of a lot with what little they had.
This was the race I went through a load of tissues. Starting with Badoer, ending with the podium. I don't usually cry at races but that one really got to me. 😢
I think most people are still wanting Alonso and Aston to taste victory again one last time.
I can remember this, Murray made the occasion even better with how he commentated! What a win for Herbert!
Also the win for Hamilton at the weekend was emotional...and good for F1......6th different winner this year 👏🏻 👍🏻
It was the only GP I have every been to... Brilliant day. Just me and my dad in an old 325 BMW from brussels to Nurburg... the best bit.. ??? walking bat to the car surounded by German flags and listening to the British Nationl anthem.... :) Nice one Jonny...

One of my favourite F1 races ever. It simply had everything.
For Cosworth was Andy Cowell in his first lead role in building an F1 engine. He was poached by BMW, returned to Cosworth (Jordan won a race with that one) before moving to Ilmor and then the Mercedes legend was born. So my money is on Aston-Honda as the next “surprise” winner 😈
The commentary on Badoer's retirement was proper harsh.

Where are these models coming from? The Stewart, the Sauber and the Minardi too, they're all the Ferrari F399 (or F1 2022, I really can't decide) just re-skinned.

Regarding the Start Light procedure hacking/cheating/whatever: I'm fairly sure it was mentioned in F1 Racing magazine. That doesn't say one way or the other whether it's true or not, but my understanding was that the teams were intercepting the signal from the startline box. This was occasionally operated by a celebrity and just involved pressing a button to activate the randomiser which then transmitted the pause-time to the gantry, as well as starting the lighting procedure.
And it was this signal that the teams were monitoring and then turning into an instruction via either the steering wheel or the radio, a fraction of a second after the appropriate time allowing them to get perfect starts.
I've probably still got the appropriate magazine somewhere. I'll upload it if I find it.

Most likely the lights failed in some way, they've done so quite a few times at that circuit.
Wasn’t just the prize money for a position finish. At the time Bernie had a pot of money he used to refund all the international freight costs for all the teams. To access it the team had to score a WCC point. This could be worth more than the difference in championship finishing positions in itself. For a back marker a point might represent your only chance to race in Japan or other late season flyaways. You do well in those you might look more appealing to a team with a bit more resource.

There seems to be something to the 'audible start aid' thing, David Coulthard has referred in the past to having had something in his ear to help with timing the start when he was at McLaren. But the whole Nurburgring '99 radio intercept story seemed to just pop up out of nowhere a few years back, with nothing to back it up. Cars stalling & being out of position is the more likely explaination. It's what people watching the race at the time assumed. Aborted starts were not unusual back then, that one just happened to be a bit comical to watch.
In my opinion........Ferrari were NEVER going to allow Eddie to win the Drivers Title before Michael. Even with Michael injured for a while. Imagine signing Schumi to be the man and Eddie wins it before him.

I mean, watching Mumtalakat Racing going full on Ferrari on strategy is fun and all... but you can't beat the aul' mechanical roulette. ;)
"Who's going to be the next outsider to win a grand prix?" I'm not sure anyone technically counts as an 'outsider' anymore, so... Andretti in '28? Alternatively, V-Carb RB, since they've already managed it three(?) times in the last decade and a half. Any other surprise winners are basically old giants rediscovering their form for a weekend (though I suppose the McLaren win could be considered an outside chance with it being so long since they were properly relevant).
As a racing aficionado it was great but as a Brazilian it felt disappointing cause Barrichello was doing a much better job overall for the team and we thought that he deserved that win which would be his first in F1.
Oh and in Brasil we were sold on the idea that Ferrari didn't want anyone ither than Schumacher as their champion. Which is indeed ludicrous as they were without a title for over 20 years. Plus as I remember they did gave Schumacher the order to let Irvine win as Irvine was in a much better place in the championship (writing from memory, not 100% sure on this)
No matter what happened that day im sure Stewart's team partied like it was 1999.....

The next outsider to win a Grand Prix? That's always gonna be a tricky one to predict. Look at Vettel, Gasly, Ocon and Perez when they all got their first wins. Who would have predicted them?
If you are gonna look at the current grid, I can see a few options but it really is gonna come down to crazy situations like pretty much each of those I named. Albon in the Williams I think would be most peoples preferred choice.

i think this is the explanation but say if i am wrong;
irvine was on slicks, it started to rain, he was brought in to the pits (ferrari confusion then over salo seconds earlier), irvine was then fitted with more slicks at the very last minute (so why brought in due to rain when already on slicks?) - i think that confused the ferrari mechanic who wouldn't fit the tyre on (he was handed a slick when a driver had just been brought in due to rain) - he was querying it and wasn't up to date with the over rule decision to fits more slicks - i think it had stopped raining just as irvine came in.
Nah. Ferrari are perfectly capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, as they have done many times in history. Even to them a title win is a title win no matter who is driving
Looking at Silverstone last week and it's clear the big teams are more 'on the ball' with changeable conditions now due to all the data - one iffy lap costs them positions (hello, Oscar) but not enough to allow a smaller team to win at their expense. Ocon's win in 2021 was more thanks to the startline shunt at the beginning and Merc making their big mistake right at the (second) start. The Big 4 teams are able to pull more than a pitstop over the remainder to minimise damage from poor weather calls. I'm sure Haas celebrated Nico's 6th place but he wasn't getting close to anything more than that.

Re the last point, it's a shame with racing so close that Liberty are so insistent on only 10 teams. (Because it's all about the money, not the sport). A few more teams fighting as minnows, hey even bring back pre qualifying. Lets be honest would it be the same as back then, if Williams won the next GP? Or Alpine? Would anybody really care that much? I miss the real minnows.

Those great privateer days will never happen again without a total shift in the thinking and handling of F1. It’s a private and very privileged club that will stay that way.
