- In the intro I say 7 episodes and that's incorrect, so when number 8 hit, I was pleasantly surprised, yay!
Would also highly recommend checking out "Never a silent night | Imperial hymn" very very interesting. I think you'll love it ! I know I certainly did 🎉
So for the Warhammer one, the guy who did Astartes was on the team for the animation. That is why it felt so "inspired" by Astartes.
I could totally see and feel it in this. Marvellous!!
@@kaizammit yeah i believe he was credited as the layout artist but you can see his influence in most more recent warhammer cinematics in general aswell
It's honestly so weird how you can just tell he worked on secret level. His animation has such a distinct feel
@@90bubbel60 I think he has really found a tone or a voice so to speak for Warhammer animations. Maybe not applicable to longer form content, overarching narratives and exposition etc. but for action scenes the deliberate framing, sparse use of dialogue and the overall heaviness and visceral violence in the scenes is just perfect
@@kaizammit Yeh, you can see his name in the credits.
*skips straight to the 40k* Yup, that's our boy. The guy who did Astartes is the 'cameraman' for this episode; the studio did the animation, he lined up all the shots. Psyker, not techpriest. The first marine died due to some sort of imposter syndrome; the squad leader feared Titus would turn to Chaos, and was thus betrayed; but Titus himself had no fear for the guardian to exploit, and it suffered the consequences.
ahhhhh, I was wondering what the heck was- being symbolized by the first dude's armor ripping HIMSELF out of it, but that makes a ton of sense now
btw the studio is Blur Studio. Same one that did the Halo 2 remaster!
I've seen it suggested that Titus' fear was that there would be no more fight-until the Tzeentch daemon showed up and gave him a fight.
The Pacman one for me, flipped the idea of the IP on it's head.
Thinking that the 'Ghosts' were the bad guys, but all along we were the bad guy?
The maze being something Pacman was placed inside to keep it inside. And the ghosts were kind of guardians to hold the line. (Insert Mitchel and Webb "Are we the baddies?")
I was really surprised at how much I loved that episode. The visceral moment of it eating it's way into his back was just gorgeous.
Fun Fact: It's kind of a stealth episode for another Namco game Xevious. The cloak the character wears has the UGSF logo, and the door they're trying to get through has the Xevi language written on it.
51:44 His biggest fear was that someone like Titus could be tainted by chaos. When you play with chaos space marines they have all those spiky bits to put their trophy skulls/helmets on. Also at 52:31 at the bottom left of the HUD (it flashes for like a second after the ship fires it's ordinance) you can see that the team leader's suit membrane was actually pierced when that sorcerer had 'Titus' stab him in the rib/stomach. The attention to detail is too good.
Yep, the sergeant is going into stasis mode when Titus is marching to face the cultists at the end.
51:44 You can also see the vestiges of a horn erupting from Titus' head in the hallucination which is classic chaos corruption.
fun fact, titus as a kid dragging along that ''sword'' is not a sword its the combat knife he uses to kill that sorcerer with.
The red helmets for Sergeants is an Ultramarine thing. It all goes back to a time when a red painted helmet was a sign of censure. During the Horus Heresy, but prior to the Imperium becoming aware of the rebellion, an Ultramarine Sergeant called Aeonid Thiel presented a theoretical for fighting fellow space marines and was marked for censure by his superiors. However during the attack on Calth by the XVII Legiones Astartes, the Word Bearers, Thiel distinguished himself and was able to take the fight to the enemy using the theoretical he had developed. As a result of this, the Ultramarines Primarch, Roboute Guilliman decreed that henceforth, all Ultramarines Sergeants helmets would be painted red to honour Aeonid Thiel.
The red was also chosen because the Wordbearers were fucking with their communications so they needed a quick way to indentify sergeants without needing to radio them.
Also funnily enough thiel was put in Gullis quarters when he was to wait for his final sentence, so he decided "well im gonna be executed, time to play with dads shit, i can't possibly get into any more trouble." Which was very convenient when he got into the primarch made stuff when the word bearers attacked.
51:55 not sure if you noticed but the sorcerer/demon uses their fears to kill them but as titus has never known fear he is both immune to it which is also shown by his pupil not dilating like the others
1st guy feared he was nothing without his armor, older guy feared Titus falling to chaos and betraying them, and ofc Titus had no far to be used against him
I also thought that the concept of eyes being a window to ones soul is being played with here.
@@ademiravdic In addition, at least in my interpretation. Both other Blueberries died immediately when the sorcerer was done with them. However, Metaurus was only wounded because, while he feared Titus falling, he also had faith in him, so it wasn't a strong fear like the others had so it only wounded him instead of killing him outright.
I wonder if titus is actually a blank. That would explain his high resistance to chaos
@@raffaele94full I forget if Blanks can become space marines, but they have an off-putting aura around them which makes it harder for people to get along with them. They also can't be affected by psychic effects, and we've seen Titus get hit by warp spells and has gotten close to daemons without them being affected.
Apparently there is a backstory element where people thought he was affected by Chaos and Calgar had to squash those rumors during training. A popular theory is he's basically a Space marine living saint, just without the official recognition.
Syama Pedersen's work is always magnificent with soundscape. No wonder people have been absolutely blown away into Warp of 40k by Astartes project.
Well said. An additional level to the soundscape is Tzeentch Corruption, they showed the play with time with the sigil reconstituting. What is sound but the change of state of a medium over time? And what better way to show you're in the domain of Tzeentch than to thwart your most basic senses?
Anyone else catch, during the Schwarzenegger episode, when the camera pans at the end, he is crowned? 😍👍🏼
The warhammer episode was awesome. I loved when the sorcerer mentally attacked the astartes, the eyes of the marines all dialated, except for Titus. The sorcerer was using the astartes' own fears against them, but Titus has no fear, so it didnt work on him. This whole episode was show, not tell and it worked awesomely
Titus used the Sorcerer's fear against it, in the mind realm he broke it's staff(which could be the sorceror's fear) thus breaking it in the physical realm and ending the time spell.
47:15 The less camera shake there is the more i feel like the creators are confident in their creation. Camera shaking can stay in the past i love these still slow shots
I think it also speaks to the methodicalness of the astartes. They're not shaking from adrenaline. They're just casually cleaning the way.
DnD: Honor Among Thieves is a great movie you should check out it. 80s cartoon cast even makes cameo.
I love that both cinematographers like him, and narrative guys from other channels agree that the warhammer ep does something special
Having grown up playing Unreal Tournament 1999 and 2000 it was one of my first FPS games online with people and played hundreds of hours.
i was expecting a danger close redeemer as he uploaded
I really love this kind of shit. I have always liked love, death, robot and now you have that but with video games. its enough to make a grown man cry
that chefs kiss gives me nightmares
why is it so shaded
One thing about the armored core games is that it is extremely rare to actually see the humans anywhere ingame, you're either fighting vehicles or other mechs (MT's, AC's, NEXT's, etc) and most of the story is carried by hud styled briefings and voice acting in and out of missions, in Armored Core 6 as far as i'm aware the one and only times you see ingame actual humans is in drawing collectibles, otherwise you'll be doing multiple playthroughs beginning to end without seeing a single person.
So the Armored Core episode was a bit of a surprise in the fact that is so rare actually seing the pilot doing his thing inside of the AC, personality wise he fits right in with the cast of strange anomalies of people in the games.
You see someon get out of an ac in Last Raven and I think there where squishy hummies running around in ac 1 but yeah almost all personal interactions are over coms or voice overs in breifings.
Honestly, despite humans being present that episode felt more armored core than ac6 did. Very cold, very brutal and angsty. Especially with the va of Ayre reprising her role but as a darker and more manipulative version of a coral wave mutation that has some ulterior motives.
@cabnbeeschurgr to be fair Ayre can be interpreted as pretty manipulative. I mean she was commenting about how cool it looked to bomb a city and she only really showed empathy to Walyer and 621. Besides I know the theme was dark 1-3 gen but it never felt that way given the music choice and presentation.
@@ibysdagon4659 fair, but there's really nothing in the game that suggests ayre is malicious. I suppose the same could be said for keanu's inverse johnny silverhand but it's obviously intended to be a darker implication than the liberator of rubicon ending which implies a very humanist future in symbosis with coral.
@cabnbeeschurgr yeah guess I am trained to kind of think about how things can go wrong. I mean the writing is ambiguous but really the liberator of Rubicon and Alea iacta est can also mean the end of humanity. Like liberator is hoping for a bright future but you killed the 2 people that can make that future a reality. Besides they did that plot line before and both times it ended badly. Both times the player character became an enemy now that I think about it.
I love how everyone was thrown off by the Pac-Man episode, only for it to be the preview of the new game coming out.
Damn you're becoming my favorite reactor on all of youtube mate. So valuable as an artist to get analysis of that style. Keep up
To answer your D&D question: it's not a prequel per say, a lot of the stories could be considered disjointed and only loosely connected.
The characters are new to me but it's a typical party dynamic: paladin for the tank, mage for the DPS, monk for DPS/support, and the druid for additional support. Later the cleric joins as a healer/tank hybrid. That being said, I know who Tiamat is and when she was involved, *chills*
Sifu was my favourite as a fan of the game, especially it's message. Warhammer was just straight cool. The Crossfire one really surprised, Armoured Core was super slick as well. But Pac Man. Pac Man caught me so off guard that I did a full circle from baffled to absolutely loving it. Didn't know I needed a fucked up gory horror Pac Man in my life but I'm glad it's there. As always, super fun and entertaining video.
The Sifu episode was my favourite. The ending is just really impactful when the old lady responds to him
Titus is now 100% my favorite Warhammer 40k Character. He's so awesome.
Agree.
There's another very similar Ultramarines character called Uriel Ventris who has had several novels written about him.
Still Grimaldus for me. Or Andrej. Andrej is really up there too
@@pub1Grimaldus is great. For Helsreach.
Honestly between the Khan, Gunnlugur, or Cain. Titus is a good character but he's kind of average space marine named character to me.
What a time to be alive to watch sutch good Warhammer 40k Movies
The Sifu one is probably my favourite but the New World one is really good too. He's such an unlikable jerk that he circles around to kind of being likable because he is so oafish. The ending with him building a new arm for his friend and hugging him made me tear up a little lol
I’ve watched several of these reactions to SL. It is so satisfying to hear someone such as yourself understand the passion and craftsmanship that went into making this (on all levels). Full disclosure; I had the great pleasure of working on many of the episodes. In particular, I storyboarded the entire Warhammer piece with Dave Wilson. This was truly a labour of love for all of us. So glad you enjoyed it.
You helped make a piece of art fella, hat off and a round of applause to you. 💪🏻✌🏻
I love the detail when they show the eyes, that Titus(The child) pupil doesnt get bigger cause he knows no fear so fucking good
I most certainly didn't expect a secret level reaction, very cool choice!, play the tapes!
Both the Warhammer and Unreal Tournament ones are a league above the rest to me. They manage to tell a story within the timeframe they have, more so than the others. Ok, they are some of the longer ones but still. Even with the addition of the second series they remain at the top.
The warhammer one didn't really tell a story past Titus having no fear but it was probably still my fav episode except maybe the Sifu one.
Yeah the other ones felt like game cinematics or trailers and not in a very good way, I wonder if he’ll do the second batch of episodes because those are really bad except surprisingly for Concord which does its GotG pastiche pretty well
Who else wants to see the Pacman soulslike now? Eat or be eaten, you are what you eat. Wandering the labyrinth being stalked by hungry ghosts. It fits the vibe too well
For the d&d episode, there are pretty clear class distinctions players will recognize. metallic dragons (gold, silver, etc) are good. What was cursing and emerges from the boy is tiamat, the god of evil dragons. Each head is a different chromatic dragon (blue, black, green, white, and red)
The series was made by Tim Miller, who also directed the Dead Pool movie. He is also involved in the umcoming game "Exodus - Become the Traveler" together with some high profile veterans of the industry. There a lot of great short trailers for Exodus. All of them very movie like.
All the episodes are in universe short stories to get you in the mood.
Kai, did you notice in the Warhammer episode, that all the eyes of the Spae Marines widened, when the sorcerer got in their head, but when he got to Titus, the eyes did not widen.
Unreal tournament is my favourite. Also xan is the final boss of the first game, xan Krieger. Also I recommend you check out the teaser trailer for The unreal tournament episode, as it's a remake of the opening cutscene of the game and explains what the tournament is and why it was created. It was really cool to see how close it was to the original cutscene, but in the new animation style.
Also, in the space marine one is worth noting that in space marine 2, Titus had 4 silver bolts, which translates to 200 years of service, whereas in this he had 4 golden bolts, which means 400 years of service. Nice little way to confirm this is long after the games, maybe even the end of Titus' story, some I imagine a planet so corrupted by chaos would likely get the exterminatus and be destroyed.
Fun fact about PAC man, there is a game coming out that it's based on the world they show in that episode.
Can't wait to see you react to the Exodus one, that might be my favourite overall. (Battlestar or expanse vibes)
Oh, I have been looking forward to this video for half a month for now, it is finally here
49:55 The guy who made Astartes actually worked on this. So it's not just an inspiration, they literally got THE Astartes guy for this.
The asset management episode isn’t really taking place In the newest armored core installment or isn’t confirmed, it does have mechs and weapons based of armored core 6 mechs, or the actual thing they are based of are armored core 6 mech parts, the voice talking Keanu’s head is somewhat suggested to be a Coral wave mutation (a being that comes from a alien sentient fuel source called coral, every piece of coral is alive and has sentience but few can actually interact with humans, they often are depicted as glowing red lights, or very volatile glowing red energy)
There's rumors floating around that his character might actually come to a future dlc for AC6
When the marines lay into the cultists i love the sound mute to the music and just noticed the structure jammed between the cliffs was a destroyed Knight :O and the detail that Titus's eye doesnt Dilute like the others when the sorcerer goes into his mind
This show was great. I'm so excited it was renewed for season 2.
Purity seals burning away is some bad ass "show, don't tell" for those in the know.
As an Unreal Tournament player from the beginning (it's the only FPS game that didn't trigger my movement-sensitive nausea), the moments of darkness as the clock and calendar counts down to a specific date are significant. It's letting us know that the omnipotent viewpoint of the Liandri Corporation was fading, THEY couldn't see as much of what was going on as soooo much the Liandri Incident happened in the shadows, beneath their notice.
Your here for 43:22 👌
during the pacman fighting montage, she was never talking to the character, but herself.
I've watched the warhammer one maybe 6 times now and I always find something new each time, titus is the only one who's eyes don't dilate when his mind is invaded by the demon, another way of showing he has no fear
The pacman one was my favorite of the whole series. It felt the most original and was probably the hardest to come up with conceptually.
It would be, until you see the announcement for 'Shadow Labyrinth'
As a longtime DnD fan, the short kicked ass. It's not really a precursor to anything, there's no one story in DnD, but it's lathered with references and things from the game. People who've played for a long time probably recognised and guessed the big bad at the end, the moves the characters used are all straight from the game - even including the arrow catch and throw.
About the X4N épisode, I was amazed at what they managed: the game has a minimalist storytelling: what's important is the arena. And they took upon that to re-write a spartacus uprising, and it works. That's brilliant.
Bro you should totally check out arcane- the visuals are insane… genuinely one of the most stunning shows I’ve ever watched
A new Pacman game was announced and it's a plat-former in that style.
For Armored Core, people are augmented to pilot their Cores, however it was deemed a risky and nonpractical practice with a common side effect being voices in their head. Every pilot you see is either part of a corporation, or an independent mercenary, often referred to as _Ravens_
46:00 Really nice catch. It wasn't just inspired by astartes.... It's the same guy but this time with a team working for him. Syama Petersen
The VA who was talking to keanu reeves character in the armored core episode. Was the same VA who talked to the playable character in the latest armored core game
The same people who created love death and robots made this series and you can definitely see the similarities
Henry has the pleasure of doing his show after the hype generated by ep5, and the displeasure indeed 😂😂
The Pacman episode actually takes place in something called the United Galaxy Space Force universe, something that Namco made to bring a bunch of their sci-fi games under the same canon.
The cloak the main character wears has a UGSF logo, and the door at the end has direct references to the game Xevious, and Puck looks exactly like how the Xevi aliens are depicted in a 2012 Xevious comic.
aand there is a game anounced at the game awards that fits this episode better then standard pac-man
As always loved the reaction, when are you doing the 2nd half of Secret Level? so stoked its success got it renewed for a 2nd season right off the bat
For context Armored Core is mostly about the player being a mercenary working for and against a bunch of greedy corperations as they wage war on each other. So kind of like what is here but on the flip side you almost never see the pilot and the AC itself is as much as a character as the people driving them. Like Keeanu's AC is pretty heavily based on the AC STEEL HAZE piloted by V.IV Rusty who was a fan favorite. But Rusty will always say things like, "I'll distract it, it can't keep up with the speed of STEEL HAZE." Instead of, "my speed". Or another pilot Freud begging his AC LOCKSMITH to hang in just a little more so he can enjoy the fight longer.
Really though you should look into Armored Core cinematics. They are up there with Final Fantasy for me in quality. Especially the AC6 story trailer and the ACV intro. Really dhows how powerful yet expendable ACs are.
The Warhammer episode was awesome. If that's what we can look forward to with Cavill its going to be awesome.
The horror twist on the Pac-Man game was great.
I really wish that the Mega-Man episode was longer and a little deeper but it's definitely a great trailer for a movie.
Ah Tidus, the future Chapter Master of the Ultramarines
in the warhammer episode, did you notice when the daemon did his thing all the spacemarines pupils got extremly big out of fear, but Titus's stayed small and focused?
People were a bit critical of the Sifu one, but I honestly really enjoyed it.
1:00:02 Abe Oddesy, I thought that too, it was a quality game and fwlt really nostalgic watching this.
They went so hard for the first episode
Btw this was the mission that Titus was sent on in Space Marine 2.
My favorite part of the 40K episode is when they are siting in the dark and little by little the guts and blood of the demon spawn behave as the lighting. They could have just done some trippy glowing floor to act as lighting for the scene, but instead spoon feed you more and more of the visual with more blood providing more light.
Possibly one of the most unique ways I think I have seen a game or animation/movie provide lighting for a scene. If it is inspired on Arstartes, its almost like the scene where they shot the RPG down the hallway and the quick flash of light highlighted the group, or the anti material cannon units muzzle flash showed the space marine creeping up behind him to kill him.
Most of the warhammer 40k animations also portray Astartes as bulky moving tanks. In the books they are anything but that so it's nice seeing them as the killing machines they are.
As a D&D fan - no, I didn't "know" what was going to happen aside from knowing even a demigod level dragon cannot stand up to the goddess Tiamat (the five headed dragon.)
Anyone noticed how thew Warhammer 40k section is the most replayed? For the Emperor!
gotta watch the Sodaz Halo “Remember” animation sometime
I really enjoyed this reaction. I thought the short with arnie was funny but so sweet at the end. I really enjoyed the robots and warhammer as well. Pacman caught me by surprise because I skipped the intro.
I think they literally used the jacking in noise from the matrix for the pilot scene. Crazy.
As a Warhammer 40K fan, my Brothers have said it all.
"matrix and cyberpunk vibes" *pans to Keanu*
I'd be interested to see your take on the second half of the season. The quality was definitely front loaded - much better episodes here than the second half.
Epic video, Kai. Thanks!
Now you can go look up Shadow Labyrinth. That Pac Man episode was deliberately made to highlight this game
One detail i like, i really like, and idk if it's supposed to be symbolic of the scenario. Soon to come is when, after the squad kills the horde of aliens with glowing blue blood, we see them treck of in position their footprints, leaving behind a glowing trail (showing gaps between the blue glow) but Titus footrints was overflowed with the blood because of the casket trailing behing him (showing no gap in between his every move and no laps in judgement) like a foreshadow almost as only him amd the squad leader survives.
In the warhammer part you ask if its a tech priest, no its a psyker. basiclly a space wizard.
I wasn't expecting the emotion from the New World episode. It really hits you in the end. But the 40K one is still my favorite.
I just wish the 2nd set of episodes had been as good as the 1st set.
That's interesting, are they not good then? I've not watched yet.
@ they are ok. In a vacuum I would even say they are really good. But compared to the level of quality from the first set they just feel like a step down.
@@kaizammit The exception to me was the Exodus episode. The others just felt lacking.
"oh wow, look at this shit", never gets old XD
you can tell what every came here for looking at most replayed section lol
Counterpoints40K channel does a great job of explaining what's going on in the WH40 animation.
P.S. The ending of the WH40K episode was great.
Will you also react to the remaining episodes of Secret Level? 😁
D&D was a smash of references for players to catch, from counterspell to a werebat. Theres loads in there, but Tiamat is the 5 headed goddess of chromatic dragons, who are generally all evil. Then you have the metallic ones, which are generally all good. Its a great short and i hope they can somehow do more with it. Great to hear your take as an outsider, you should defo go back and watch the rest of Love Death and Robots though!
I know this is him giving us a insight but i wish he learned about Cavill doing warhammer in the future.
1:13:47 my favorite I love armored core and this did it justice
What could a soul like that be capable of
When you fear nothing…
The answer:
ANYTHING 😈😈😈
i also expected the Old Boy hallway shot in the SIFU short.
take a shot of eggnogg everytime Kai says "Dutch angle"
I would *love* if you could make an additional detailed breakdown of the Warhammer 40k one vs the "playtime" one (final episode in the season), just showing why, regardless of content, one just utilizes film making techniques so much better to make the shortfilm look more compelling.
I've not covered the later episodes of the series, any good? You'd like me to compare them two specifically?
@@kaizammit there are a bunch of good ones in the latter half, but overall it's significantly weaker than the first half. Those two specifically just seem to be the objectively best and worst of the season after seeing multiple people's reactions on it.
1:20:44 aawwh cute kitty in the background, whats his/hers name?🥰
what many miss at the "new World" episode, when the king vs the king of eternum, arnie´s charakter make his iconic move from conan the barbarian and you see Conan's Atlantean Sword before the arm cuts off
Pac-Man IS existential horror. You can never finally kill the creatures after you, endless repetition for most people.
Armored Core is all about augmented humans that are able to pilot giant mechs fighting each other. Some are free mercenaries, others work for corporations, others only work for themselves. If AC6 had full cut scenes I'd tell you to watch them, but sadly most of the dialogue and story happens during gameplay lol.
You don't see any humans in AC as far as I know, but the voice actors for the characters do a phenomenal job bringing their characters to life, making you sympathize or hate them as if they were real people. Even if you don't react to it, I would watch one of VaatiVidya's coverage of the story of AC6 so you kinda know what it's about, though I highly recommend trying the game for yourself, it's so much fun.
Cant wait for 8-15 🙏
I suspect what was getting to you with the Crossfire cars wasn't the look but the movement, they don't drive like cars with real weight & momentum.
Love your content. I’m here for the space marine bit!
I’ve got to agree - the weakest bits are the abstract portions… for those who just want to consume and enjoy the content.
However, I much prefer this method of story telling rather than hand holding and exposition.
“They shall know no fear”:
The first space marine sees:
1. A space marine (himself)
2. His fear: A regular human. Weakness.
That’s his fear. Fragility. And it kills him.
Second space marine sees (veteran / MC):
1. Himself
2. His fear: Titus corrupted by chaos
Third space marine (Titus) sees:
1. Nothing… there’s nothing there. The sorcerer takes his place.
2. The fear: Titus as a child and becoming a space marine.
My interpretation? Titus knows no fear. Did the “spell” rebound? Does this sorcerer NOW fear Titus? Or did it always fear Titus?
Who knows! Something happened.
Idk why but every time I see the 40k episode I want to edit it with Carpenter Brut
Do you think that added layer of audio, the one you described as being muffled, heavy and sounding like it was under water was to perhaps simulate what wearing a helmet for an Astartes would be like. Or least what things would sound like when you are incased in a 1 tonne suit of ceramite armor. I dunno, I thought as much. Adds to the immersion.
Massive viewerspike on the space marine one xd for the emperor brother
When Pacman started I thought they had got the games mixed up.... character looks like a Tau.
I feel like the Armored Core short didn't work aswell specifically because it was a short. If the fighting and cutting between Keanu was a bit more spaced out and paced to my liking, I would say it's a 10/10.
