I’m SO GRATEFUL I found your channel ! I’m a homeowner ( 5 years now ) but have no background in gardening etc . I have no clue what to do on what order etc. I live in Birmingham AL so was thrilled to find someone in my state ! Thank you so much
This video gave me everything I needed. Cleaning out weed/rock/kitty poop beds has been by far the toughest part of gardening in zone 8b from May to now. Prev owners realized they were moving and I got stuck with cleaning out a “wrap around the house bed”. I also like the brick idea for water, I’m going to implement this method in one of my beds that gets an awful amount water in one spot. The end result was soooooo amazing. I was quoted $895 but after watching this video, I’m doing it myself! Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm cleaning mine out by placing cardboard down over all the grass and weeds then weighing it down by adding mulch. Once everything dies in a couple weeks the worms will eat all the dead organic matter including the card board and their castings will help fertilize my garden next year. Less work for me.
@@mordecai8707 rocks aren't a bad thing in the garden they can just be annoying for us. They offer a great place for the roots to anchor onto, aerating the soil, and drainage (especially in potted plants), temp control by keeping the soil cool in the day and warm at night. Depending on what your growing and the climate your in, it can be recommended to have more or less rocks.
What if you want to replace the garden bed with just grass?? Is there another option than mulch or do I just clean up the mulch?? Or could I use dirt??
Once you are finished pulling out all the weeds and laying your fresh mulch down, then lay out chicken wire across your flower bed and it will keep the cats out of your flower bed. Cat's do not like stepping on any wires or aluminum and they will not poop in your flower bed. I had to put chicken wire in my flower bed last year and I haven't had to clean my flower bed from cat poop! If you can deal with the chicken wire in your flower beds then it will work for you.
@@GardenDownSouth Don't feel bad - my flower bed on the east side of my house has a huge problem with invasive ground cover. I may have to cut it down to the ground and use Roundup, unless you have any other suggestions. This is the house I grew up in. I wish my mother had not planted that stuff. It is not "snow on the mountain", but another kind that has a solid green leaf.
Brother your getting old. I started to do these things myself after 35 y.old. I take a bottle of vodka, my 3 yold son and make my yard, plant trees, flowers, berries, everything by myself. I really started to love nature.
Try lining the flowerbed with a layer of chicken wire. (Pin down small patches of chicken wire around and over plantings. Unpin squares of chicken wire or hardware cloth to dig up or plant new plants.
around here, lawn cutting people charge like 75$ to do a yard that takes them 20 minutes to cut with a machine, this takes hours, so would easily cost like 200$ depending on size and how bad overgrown it is. this is just an opinion, btw.
I found this video by Google searching how to remove raised flowerbeds and restore the grass. I have flowerbeds all along the front and side of my house and then on both sides of my backyard. We just bought the house and the person before us did a great job with weed prevention but I am noticing a lot of poop in the beds and I’m assuming it’s feral cats and possibly my puppy every once in a while. Is there anything I can do to keep the puppy and cats out? Something that don’t involve fencing.
I've had no luck with this myself over the years. At this time though, mine are very full with shrubs, etc. and they have left them alone because they're is no dirt area for use.
Do you have any recommendations cleaning out a flower bed thats hard and over the top is dead grass/long strands of dead weed mixed with dirt, wish i could send pictures. Should i just lay mulch over it after getting the living weeds? Or would that be a band aid fix. Should i get rid of all the lose dirt and put mulch on the hard stuff after breaking it loose with the tool?
its such hard work, i know. I'd have to see it probably but if it's small you could lay cardboard over it to suppress the weeds then add mulch, but then when planting, you'd have a tough time going through it and the previous weeds. they would eventually decompose but it would take a while
@@GardenDownSouth gotchya, i figured out what im going to do, but with having extremely hard soil what should i use to aerate it keeping in mind i have pipes from my sprinker system, but idk where they are was nervous buying a garden fork and dont want to accidentally damage anything. Could i use a manual cultivator?
if you use a weasel or something of that nature, you'd have less a chance of damaging the lines. You'd feel them before you use alot of force. I'd suggest irrigating the area for a while over a couple of days to get it good and workable, hand pull what you can, then carefully use the cultivator for aeration. Some type of compost added to the soil will help loads in the long run
you can of you do it really early in the season, give it time to wear off. also depending on the weed killer. Roundup claims 3 days but id wait a month
I've totally re done it this past week, i may do a video of it, but i just kind of throw everything in that bed...i have cannas now, hydrangea, and just added flax lily yesterday
It's a combo weeder cultivator, i will see if i can find the exact name. it was a no name brand when i bought it, just said "garden tool" link in description of a few different kinds , here is one amzn.to/30A2ufr

What if there’s rocks And inorganic matter in the bed? I’m trying this cardboard method but I’m worried if it’ll work well if I have rocks underneath

Hello, great job. What kind of tree is that? Also, does it blooms in the spring?
Pomegranate tree, and yes it stays blooming early spring through the summer, i do have trouble with fruit setting though

How mouth mulch did you use?
