Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel/Spetsnaz shovel are a dependable and versatile tool, and formidable, once you get them sharp (they do come reasonably sharp from factory, I did I use a file to get a improved working edge on mine and then a WorkSharp tool sharpener to refine the edge further) and I view then as either a shovel that you can chop with or a hatchet that you can dig holes with. Don't forget you can throw them as well. I honestly see these as a viable alternative to a large knife and/or hatchet/tomahawk.
Other uses include as a emergency paddle, makeshift cooking plate (if the paint has been removed) defensive tool, digging holes, fire tending by moving coals around, chopping wood/wood processing, and a multitude of other out-of-the-box-thinking-uses.
Another interesting option is the titanium versions available from Russia (available on Ebay) though the price does increase dramatically, thought the weight decreases significantly as well. Similar pattern, just made from military grade titanium. My next one will be a titanium version I am thinking.

I'll stick with the Cold Steel shovel; no gimmicks, pure function; it moves dirt (and seems to have a larger area than the others), cuts like a razor, chops well, hammers, pries, can be thrown with power, and can be used as a wicked defensive weapon or shield. No joints or moving parts to malfunction, and if you break the handle, you could potentially shave a new one from a tree limb, as long as you have a screwdriver for the securing screw. It always gives me a warm fuzzy when it's on my pack or in my hand.

@@r.dennis3916 the Cold Steel shovel is a good value for the money. I use it for yardwork. Does good digging out shrubs, cutting tree roots, and sometimes I use it for edging in tight place. After all the work is done, I've been known to throw it around a little. The medium carbon steel means it sharpens easy with a file.

I cant come around on a shovel for survival, its usually the last tool you see in any survival scenario, and the additional implementation is reduced in quality, usability. A good knife with a ferro rod in the sheeth, and small ax in the car would go much further for a lasting solution.

I could not agree with you more. As a craftsman who works with cutting tools all the time, the thought of what digging even a small hole to take a dump in would do to the cutting edges of all of these weapon-shovels boggles the mind. You would spend 90% of your time just sharpening the things, unless you gave up and just used them as a shovel. I'm much happier with a dedicated trenching tool and then a machete with a serrated back edge to saw with. Hacking, cutting, and digging, all separated. I was really wondering exactly what it would look like to use the hex wrenches on that EST tool. First, the nut that you would be working on better be completely out in the middle of nowhere, or else the blade would make it impossible to reach. Second, if that thing slips off the nut, the ENTIRE TOOL IS A BLADE!!! Dude, one slip and you'll cut off your hand, if that thing is as sharp as they say it is. So, in sum, I totally agree. These things are "tools" that, if actually put to any real use, would fail miserably.
