    The biggest benefit I've gotten from learning about MBTI is that I've stopped naively thinking that everybody thought the same way as I do. Duh! I was projecting my own priorities, goals, aspirations, and world view on others, as in "deep down this guy or that girl really does care about other people's feelings and needs." Now I know that they don't always, and that's huge for me. Not all people see the use or need to help those less fortunate, or to be truthful, or to be open to others' points of view or sensitive to their feelings. It's great knowing that people are just wired in different ways , and it's not up to me to try to change them "for their own good." Although frankly, I still wish I could. (*sigh)

      I wish I were more in tune with my feels, 😔
      It'd be better than this never ending cycle of ignore the feelings and later on have it leak into your productivity or mind.. And you suddenly find yourself self sabotaging like a mo fo 🤣
      but feels are more of an "intellectuallizing" for me. "this is how I've learned to expect to supposed to feel about this or that situation.." I guess kind of like how people with color blindness know Orange is orange.. But they just don't "experience" it.. in the same way.

      Exactly the same as me! I, in a more pessimistic way (cause I feel the need to be unique) assumed that everyone generally thought and acted the same way I did. MBTI opened up my eyes.

    I’m an INFJ (not self-typed) and my mom is an ISTJ (I typed her). Time to time I find it useful to ask myself “What would my mom think/do?” Not with the feeling of guilt, just to look at the situation from a different angle when I’m stuck. And the answer generally is to learn the information that I considered unworthy of learning previously which I believe is all that sensory data I skip over. It works!

  • @johnsonstringperform
    @johnsonstringperform 5 років тому +56

    There is a misunderstanding of Infj. Our critic isn’t telling us we are bad people- it is correcting our path. For example, one path is pride. We are drawn to self defense and the finer side of life but the critic warns us of the possible downfalls in that direction. So humility comes as a refirection, for a better life and kindness to others. The self- loathing comes from not being able to be the person you see in your mind. This can be mitigated through patience, perceverance and and a good mentor or friend. The drive to serve other people is not correct. That is ESFJ. We will serve other people but for the reason that it is the right thing to do and makes the world a better place but not that we need to be needed. We want to be valued for our foresight and expertise. When we are taken advantage of and assumed to be the server type we shut down out of resentment. We want to be loved because we are good and wise. Not loved because we are doormats and need flogging.

      INFJ... Yes! Fi critic isn't feeling inferior to others in any way... maybe feeling incompetent or frustrated in being misunderstood, but not self inferior or self-condemning.
      In fact, I think this is where my (be prepared for a bs term) "INFJ rage" gets triggered easiest. I've had to deal with people forcing me into my Inferior function & sub/un-conscious states plenty with the question, "How are you today?" hahaha. IDK, that's an Si function. It always gives me a mild shock before I answer. sigh. ...
      But when people give me their unsolicited opinions about me, especially if I'm expected to listen without my own reactions and Fe being allowed in the Fi processing... it can get ugly once my limit is reached. sorry. truth. ... not a doormat.
      I'm kind because I understand feelings, both "good" & "bad" ones (I don't really put weight on feelings like that). And I can see how feelings shape and affect humanity. (there are some feelings you wouldn't even wish on an enemy once you understand them). So, I care about others. How they feel affects how I feel, It affects the world I live in. ...
      Our advocate nature and desire to help others, I believe, stems more from understanding discomfort and wishing that on no one, more than it does a need for validation of our feelings (like w/enfj). ...
      My validation desire ties more to my Ni-Ti looping tendencies, hahaha. Yes! ... We want to be valued for our foresight & expertise more than anything... I'm a woman, but I would much rather hear a comment about my abilities than my looks any day. In fact, the vanity comments kinda annoy me if I'm not getting a balance of people noticing my brains as well.

      I can see the point you are making but you are both right and wrong. I don't believe the assumption that Fi critic isn't self loathing by nature because it certainly is. It allows us to be humble and question if we are making to right choice which is the "correction" you were talking about. However, it fundamentally means that we are hesitant to trust our own moral judgements and thus makes us concerned whether or not we are moral ourselves. This can be a passive criticism or a harsh one depending on your current circumstances and what decisions you are trying to contemplate. In the end it's the same, we are concerned we are bad people and thus critique ourselves and our choices based on a moral perspective and over compensate with our compassion for others with Fe parent. It is true that a great amount of grief is caused by us not living up to what we see in our minds, but that is secondary to the cause. We fail to be that person by default and thus question our own value since we are unable to attain it no matter how badly we want to. Hope this is clear and concise.

      True.
      Another video of his talks about the difference of being morals dominant or ethics dominant. INFJ are ethics dominant. Our morals become more maliable as we processes new revelations of TRUTH. 🤷 So we question them more.
      My enfj hubby is morals dominant and I used to question his ethics more than I should have before getting to understand our differences better.

    I'm an INTP, so of course I have a theory- I think that the critic function is the personality's ultimate goal. For example, an INTP uses Ti Ne to seek out ultimate truth (Ni, their critic). ESTPs want to get things done overall (their critic is Te). Se and Ti are great tools to achieve thorough Te. Also, I believe one respects those who have their critical function as their hero. For example, INTPs and INTJs generally have a mutual respect for one another. INTPs also respect INFJs.

    • @midnight15086
      @midnight15086 6 років тому +27

      I think that's an interesting theory you have. I'm an INTJ, where Ti is supposed to be the critic, and I respect the logic of INTPs. In fact I feel like one of the greatest failures/embarrassments possible is to be caught being illogical.

    • @joshualevan
      @joshualevan 6 років тому +5

      midnight15086 that’s so true! As an INTP, a big embarrassment is to have an educated conclusion (Ni) proven wrong.

    • @midnight15086
      @midnight15086 6 років тому +15

      @@joshualevan Interesting. Ni is my first function so I'm used to being so full of possibilites and educated guesses that some will inevitably be wrong haha. I don't feel stupid as long as people understand my ideas are not concrete factual conclusions. A wrong educated guess doesn't make you unintelligent- hypotheses exist to eventually be proven right or wrong and we usually learn something from them in the process either way.

    • @Philosophicalpaperti
      @Philosophicalpaperti 5 років тому +6

      Another INTP here! I think you may be onto something, but it only works with types that you share functions with (like thinking or feeling). Eg. INTPs and INTJs have that special feeling of respect and liking but not INTPs and INFJ's, or INTJs and INFPs. I think? Maybe this is related to the idea that ideal relationships are flipped types (ie. INTPs and ENTJs); INTJs also have all the same functions as ENTJs in similar positions (high Te/Ni, low Se/Fi). It seems that not only is it important that the functions be opposite, but opposite in a very specific way. For example, I have a very good ESFP friend, who also shares all the same functions as INTJs and ENTJs but since his feeling is pretty high he demands that I provide him with good feeling experiences which I JUST CAN'T. My Fe is literally at an animal level. :( But INTJs and ENTJs may be ok with more primitive feeling because their Fi is also primitive?Personally, I've found I hit it off much better with INTJs than ENTJs, despite this being the "ideal pairing". Maybe this theory of the critic function is why? This may also be why Chase loooves ENTJ's so much, as ENTJ would be his "ultimate goal" type. :)

    This definitely makes sense. I was trying to figure out why I am such a good friend to myself. Maybe my ego, INTP, is befriended by my subconscious - ESFJ. I think this is how I survived one summer when I was like, literally alone for up to weeks at a time trying to finish my thesis. I made myself really good food, listened to nice music and sat in comfy chairs in order to get my work done, and I thought, wow: I am one of my best friends ever. But when I found out my type was actually INTP, I was really excited to get to know new INTP people. Then I saw your video on INTP's compatibility types and became sad because I thought, but I am nice to myself, so why would I have such a bad time with other INTPs (that hilarious argument you demonstrated that would happen between 2 INTPs)? Perhaps with INTPs, I go into my ESFJ subconscious because I'm so excited to meet someone like me. This is a very stupid comment, I apologize.

    I'm so glad you started this channel it's extremely difficult to comb through the fluff of MBTI/Cognitive Functions. Even when neuroscience gets involved like with Dario Nardi's work it is only scratching the surface of the subject. I'm an INFJ so you're aware of the insecurities, worries and negative self talk that runs rampant in my mind. Because of my temperament I spent a lot of my life stressed out. So I think I've become very familiar with my shadow over the years. When I got to my 30's I had another emotional "betrayal" causing a psychological break like it tends to happen to my type; but that time it was as if I had an internal struggle of good and evil. Where I spent weeks trying to pull back my rage and desire to destroy everything and start over "New Beginnings" when I finally felt centered again it was as if I combined my good and evil to find balance. After that experience I find myself falling into flow states either by inducing them myself or I might just fall into a flow state when my inner critic finally shuts up. I know this is long but do you know of other people who have experienced this? I'm not sure if Carl Jung wrote about this but I know Jean Piaget did, I need to read his works.

    A friend recommended I watch this video bc she knew I've been struggling with not being able to determine my mbti bc the results were different each time. I have taken the test maybe 5 times and never resulted in infj, which I was almost certain I was but wanted to prove it. My friend said learn cognitive functions and you'll be able to prove it. She recommended INFJ UA-camr who created the Cognitive Personality Theory who spoke on Jung's transcendent function and individuation. I realize I used to live in my super bitch ego before I healed my anger/rage issues, and been primarily living in my subconscious ESTP. After just over 3 years of a spiritual personal growth healing journey, you taught me I'm able to live in almost all my cognition. Idk enough about the unconscious functions yet to see how I resonate, not quite sure I've reached enlightment yet, but I'm not done working on myself I'm certain I'll get there one year! Thanks for the video, it all makes so much sense now, I was losing my mind with all the stupid pointless tests. You just need to do your own research and figure yourself out, for you :)

      And also bc I'm a 6w5 it's NOT common for an infj, I thought for the longest time I was INTJ or infp. Until I learned about cognitive functions then I realized the test can be unreliable - and the cognitive functions don't lie or cheat :)

    I've been coming back to this video a hundred times by now and it's awesome. One thing has sort of picked at my brain a few times, when you mention The Dark Knight.
    The joker in The Dark Knight appears to be chaotic evil, but there's a much larger system at play under the surface.
    In Alfreds story about the man in the jungle, he didn't just want to see the world burn. He raided corrupt, government caravans with jewels used to bribe native chieftains. He was enforcing justice in the same vigilante manner as Bruce, - throwing the jewels away was not a sign of carelessness. He wanted to burn corruption.
    Throughout the movie you never see Joker harm anyone but dickbags. He blows up a hospital, sure - but only after giving people a very long time to clear out. He saw something in Dent that no one else did, - even Bruce missed it. The city appeared to be in control at the start of the film, but as we see later on - the corruption is still deeply seeded in Gotham. It's now mainly the big dogs playing and Joker infiltrates them in a matter of hours. He then gathers them up and convinces them to move all their assets into one location. He knows that money rules Gotham and that prison would only hold them for days if they still had their fortunes. He essentially took Batman's mask of fear concept and expanded it to a larger perspective than Bruce was able to.

    I'm an ISFJ.
    I become similar to INTJ (superego) when i'm having a really really hard time.
    I also become similar to ENTP(subconscious) sometimes. That experience was much more positive and productive as you mentioned, it was often amusing and i even felt like i became a smart person.
    Being similar to ESFP(unconscious) did not happen very often, and i felt unpleasant often because i had to discover that i'm not good at Se(nemesis); it was harder than being ENTP.
    but being like INTJ was worst... it was like being stuck in a prison or hell i cannot get out of... i wasted a lot of money and time whenever i was stuck in demon Ni.
    Today i realize what all the experiences really meant. Your explanation is really clever and helpful, Thank you Joseph.

      But, isfj s super ego intj is a helping mode like infj, thats why many isfj in the net thinks they are infj, (experience) entp (isfj type) i know how anxiety is in isfj may be cz when i am isfj ,i am almost isfj , (i guess isfj fears future, entp dont, entp sometimes like having failure for their growth lol) but having si first means working first, isfj s are basically good detective too, cz they have entp(sub consciousness) 4th level detective, intj super ego (2nd level detective), while si remembers everything made them 1st level, but my friend doesn’t uses entp that much, always had this isfj, or intj helping mode but both are robotic so everyone misunderstood, but other isfj(entp like) friend does, and it is more entp than entp me lol
      But isfj me also being misunderstood now shifted into original entp rigidity, or intj half stable even ( rather throughing ne ti fe or si truth, just gave the individual ni te info and he feared,his shadow gone, just saying bunch of ti fi stuff which i told him before)

    Makes sense. I'm an INTJ and developed my Ni and Te early on due to tough life events. Recently, I've been working for 2 years with Fi-doms in my workplace so I developed more of my Fi. That leaves Se to develop and I'm working consciously in that now. The curious thing happened after a while. I started to be more extraverted and tell a lot of jokes to people. Now I want to go out with people, want to learn how to dance, I'm going to concerts and walking trails! Did I just brought my subconscious ESFP out, through Se? I guess I did...

Because of your teaching I have been able to use my subconscious in a much stronger way. Gateway from Se to ESTP. I really appreciate your circumspect insight into these subjects. I agree 100% with you here and I’ve always felt that you have to take things like this with a grain of salt, I am an INFP on the few times I’ve taken the MBTI over the last 15 years, once I did get an ENFP result, in any case I look at it as a “this and” not an “either or”. I am not going to react or respond to something so I can be in the INFP “box” or whatever.

    Now I finally start to grasp why I can relate to different archetypes of the mbti whenever I read their profile on any mbti-related websites. I tried mbti-related tests numerous times in the past and the only thing that resonates with me is the ixxx. I read other archetypes just to have an idea on their personality. Everytime I take the tests, it shows different results except for the first letter. I got P twice for the last letter and I think I got J in the past as well. The 2nd and 3rd letter changes everytime I took the test. Because of that I still try taking a test whenever mbti brings up again on super rare occasions because I tend to forgot about it after a long time. I just remember it again whenever I browse the net and it popped up unexpectedly in a show or in the comments section that's why I got an interest in it again and found your videos from one of the comments in a forum. I take tests like this because I wanted to understand myself.
    I watched your first 2 seasons but skipped on some videos like this one. And go back to it again because I got confused and I now know that there will be a better understanding on the succeeding videos if one watch your videos chronologically. Your videos on cognitive functions of our mind made more sense and after I tried taking the socionics test unofficially, my result from socionic is sli which is istp and your istp video resonates to me more than the infp. The socionics resulsts resonates with me as well and its the first time I've heard of it. I got infp in the past twice and even though I can somehow relate, I cannot fully relate to it because I feel like something is missing on that video. Same with isfp that I got on 16personalities test. I can relate to some parts of isfp as well. After watching these, I get some enlightenment on why I get infp twice in my results in the past and why it still resonates in me somehow. And the reason was, infp is the super-ego of the istp types.
    I just want to clarify one thing. Even though I classify myself as istp now (quite unsure if it will be the same result after I watch season 15 soon, but I really feel that I'm istp) and infp is its super-ego, while fi is the demon of an istp ego, and fi is also the hero of an infp ego, it just shows that every cognitive function (fsnt+ie combination) has its corresponding 2 sides right: the good & the bad on each spectrum. Fi demon is the bad side (if immature) of istp and when that function develops, it becomes the good side (as we mature), to an fi hero that is (infp). Does that mean that I can be an infp ego if I can develop its fi and put it into good use at certain times even though I am istp by nature?
    Thank you for sharing your knowledge to us. It was of great help to better understand these cognitive functions or the Jungian analytical psychology.

    Hi,ISTP here i like the mbti system a lot cus i think its a puzzle,but i think sometimes when people are explaining certain types,the things they explain are overexaggerated, for example "ISTPS Get stressed when they are talking about thier feelings" i personally dont think its stress i think its fear,i used to be afraid of expressing my emotions,but i manned up,went up to a friend and straight up told him, hey i am insecure about how people feel about me he helped me express myself alot and i had finally felt connected to someone,i love the mbti system because its like a huge puzzle,but The moral of the story is,Don't go read stuff about mbti and say ohhhhh we get stressed when we use Inferior X and then we get stuck in an X-D loop, you need to focus on developing that inferior function even tho it wont really develope fully You still must try,thats all folks Peace out

    This explains so much... and the examples about INTP, my type, were very accurate. I'm not sure I understand what exactly is the unconscious and the subconscious though. More about subconscious as I've researched John Beebe talking about the unconscious/shadow functions (was to his lecture recently actually!). Maybe because I'm not an english native and need to research what the un- and sub- prefixes really mean.

    • @Mijolite
      @Mijolite 6 років тому +2

      From the example though, are those the situations the unconscious and subconscious type behaviours typically appear in? Unconscious when in a crisis situations (INTP becoming ENTJ, taking charge), subconscious when in social situations (INTP becoming ESFJ and offering to clean dishes after dinner)?

    • @Mijolite
      @Mijolite 6 років тому +2

      Also, can the superego manifest in an aspirational and comfortable rather than corruptive way? I know you mentioned the 5% good and the Enlightement being the functions being in balance, but besides 'enlightement', which cannot be true for me as I am but a young kid at the start of my growth journey? Even before learning of this I've noticed I am very comfortable when I am able to kind of tap into the behaviours Fi-doms seem to use, and Se. I love the moods I sometimes get when I become more of an Artisan, still Behind the scenes, type, when I don't care about what other people think about me and can enjoy the moment and what feelings the sensory environment around me creates. Which I've now realized is literally my Superego, the ISFP with Fi-Se. I used to think that the type that I'd love to be if I wasnt INTP (though I have learned to love INTP) was INFP since I loove the ones that I know. But now I think it's probably ISFP because of the Se. Okay that was long and rambly and sorry for the flood of not very comprehensible questions but could the Superego manifest as a sort of Aspiration, and is my liking and sometimes succumbing to the Superego something I should stop at once cause it will have bad consequences (me becoming a supervillain, for example ;) )?

    • @CSJoseph
      @CSJoseph  6 років тому +5

      Subconcious is what is used for being aspirational. Unconscious = the shadow according to Beebe and while the shadow can be used in crisis situations it can also be used in immature situations or something to be used to achieve balance.

    My test results are usually INTJ, INTP; very occasionally INFP and ISFP.
    In IDR Lab's cognitive function test, I get Ni as my top function followed by Ne, which is confusing. These results somehow end up suggesting that I am INFJ.
    Learning about Si and Se functions has helped me to narrow my type down, because I have a good memory about my history of weakness with Se based on other people's comments (reliable historical data) that I can use to type myself :) The rest of the functions are challenging so still learning more, while using your new videos about interaction styles and temperament to further help narrow down the choices by eliminating what types are impossible.

    I'm an INTP, my sister is an ESTJ, our father is ISTP and our mother is ESFJ; is there correlation of our own personas to our parents and being able to conceive certain types. When you cross-check the 4 personas, there's something interesting going on in relation to my family. I quickly googled genetics in relation to personality type and a woman was wondering similar; how it was possible for her, an ISFJ, and her husband, an ISTP, to produce an INTJ and an INFJ. Based on personas, quite possible. And what are the chances of someone being introverted or extroverted based on whether they have two intro parents or one of each; the latter leading to a 50% chance or some other percentile based on whether one parent is more present/active in the upbringing than the other.

      Acrobaticon this is an ongoing discussion within the Jungian Analytical Psychology community. I have invented algorithms that would potentially answer these questions. Hey C.S. Joseph, your videos are awesome!! Thanks for informing us on such important 'life' topics :)
    I have a question related to your video (and I'm providing some background info first, so bear with me!)
    So there are 4 possible ‘mindset’ combinations:
    INTJ-ENTP-ESFP-ISFJ
    ENTJ-INTP-ISFP-ESFJ
    ISTP-ESTJ-ENFJ-INFP
    ESTP-ISTJ-INFJ-ENFP
    (with 4 possible permutations per combination, which gives us the 16 types)
    What’s interesting is that, when you look at the temperaments (guardian-G, artisan-A, intellectual, idealist), each mindset has one temperament that is NOT represented.
    INTJ-ENTP-ESFP-ISFJ (G + A + 2 x Intellectual) - No Idealist
    ENTJ-INTP-ISFP-ESFJ (G + A + 2 x Intellectual) - No Idealist
    ISTP-ESTJ-ENFJ-INFP (G + A + 2 x Idealist) - No Intellectual
    ESTP-ISTJ-INFJ-ENFP (G + A + 2 x Idealist) - No Intellectual
    Any thoughts on why this is?
    A related observation/thought…if the Intellectuals and Idealists were categorized as NJ/NP instead of NT/NF, this would be consistent with the way Guardians and Artisans are categorized (with a J/P), and also it would result in each of the temperaments being represented in each of the mindsets (making us more 'balanced')…so from a consistency/logic standpoint it would make more sense (and as I’m typing this I just remembered you mentioning in one of your videos that INFJ’s can almost be considered as a Thinker or Intellectual…what if INFJ (and ENFJ) are indeed miscategorized??) Of course, we are talking about (human) nature here, which can be highly illogical, so the patterns I’m looking for may not even be real!
    Let me know what you think or if my logic is off...
    Thanks!!

      your logic is good but the point of the type grid is to provide this disparity.

    I think that strong (Ne) types are more likely to understand (and put into practice) the individual pieces of information that depth psychology is made up of. It's really important for the future that Initiatives find ways to effectively communicate these concepts to the rest of the (Se) world.
    So far the best way I can come up with is to make it about "saving the country" or "save your future" instead of "save the future."
    maybe this is obvious to everyone but me but I think it's important to discuss.
    - Obvious INTP out.

    Damn, ENTPs are great, I’m lowkey being mind blown as he talks nonchalantly to pick an example when he related Martin Luther King sin quote to superego then talked about what enlightenment is- btw INTJ here

    First, of, kudos to you, this channel and your video's are easily the best on youtube, keep it up! Question: what is the difference between the subconcious and the unconsious?

    • @CSJoseph
      @CSJoseph  6 років тому +8

      Ario - the subconscious is the part of the mind that people are tryin to be more like or become, the unconscious is where a person’s immaturity exists.

    Thanks Chase, very informative. Still, I need to solve an important question regarding the four sides of the mind, which I haven't solved in this or other of your videos: PLEASE explain where within the mind do the subconscious and unconscious are? When do they become activated? Which is deeper within? How are they diffrent? Is one more powerful/useful than the other? THANK YOU SO MUCH. Gabriel (44 y/o, male, spanish speaker INTP) ;)

    Much respect for you with your insights on the four sides of the mind! How did you discover that this was true? I have a burning question. I am an INFP, but it looks like my subconscious is ISTJ. I think there is a reason for that. It is hard for me to extrovert because I struggle with a physical condition that makes me really tired a lot (and reaching out to other people requires A LOT of energy). But, often I have to use that practical part of me at work and to get things done that are my responsibilities, I have to use TE and SI. How does that work that I appear to be still introverting when I go into my practical subconscious to try to do my (extremely awfully boring) job? Note: my mind wanders frequently onto things I ACTUALLY WANT to think about, but I FI VALUE being a good worker, so I keep trying to pull myself back into getting the job done.

    I'm an INFP and honestly I think I have pretty good spacial awareness when I move through my environment in a conscious way, but I do tend to lose track of time a lot or procrastinate for too long when I don't set deadlines. My brain will easily get distracted by what I'm passionate towards and almost block out my responsibilities if I don't set clear goals for myself to complete. Not to mention, I have a hard time staying organized. Anyone else relate?
