TOP 3 MISTAKES MADE WHEN BUILDING A POND

- If you’re in the process of building a new pond, you’re bound to make a few mistakes. Everyone does. Today, I’m going to review the top 3 most common mistakes made, and hopefully shedding some light on these will help you avoid making them.
1.) Location- Starting with the design, ponds are often placed in poor locations. Those are unused areas of the property or in low spots that collect water. Both these locations cause big problems. Unused areas are well, unused for a reason. Putting a pond in those areas is a waste because it just won’t be seen on a regular basis.
Low spots are challenging. They will collect water, runoff, pollutants- and your pond water quality will ultimately suffer. Also, in heavy floodable areas water can in fact pool underneath the liner and actually lift the liner up.
2.) Size- Yes, a small pond is easier to construct (less manual labor and cheaper) but, they’re harder to maintain than a large pond. For the most part, majority of people end up making their ponds bigger down the road. Not only because they love it, but their fish and plants outgrew the smaller feature. If you have the space, go big.
3.) Lack of Ledges- ledges will provide shelves for plants, yes. But, more often than not- a rock shelf is forgotten. This is short shelf above the plants shelves that provide necessary depth of stone. The rock shelf is there to hide the liner when the water level goes down.
Bottom line- have a plan, do research and above all ask questions. We’re always available. I’m Joe from webbsonline. Talk to you then.
Wow. Wish I had seen this BEFORE I build my pond. I put it in a low spot,, turns out there is a seasonal underground stream there which kept filling under the liner, making it slide off the edges. Still working out a solution. Can you believe I had to put a sump pump UNDER my pond liner, reconfigure the pond so I could reach the sump for maintenance. Not out of the woods, but working on it. Thanks for your video.
Just finished my first pond and then watched this. I did ok :)
Good points made ....thank you.
Nice and concise. Mahalo!
thank you...short but very helpful video.
Pond size argument is valid, 100%. The larger the pond, the easier it is to maintain water parameters (not surprisingly, same goes for aquariums).
It's 3 am and I need to study for a bunch of exams. What am I doing with my life.
Edit: Hey guys, in case you were concerned, my exams went smoothly and I managed to get in the degree that I wanted :).
You are learning what not to do when building a pond.
Haha you’re not alone
Sounds like maybe you need to become a pond builder or something related instead of whatever you are studying. Follow your interests and if you find there is a way to make a living doing that then go for it!
Please guid me iam building a 15 x12 ft pond and want to run it on solar pump what size pump do I need and where from
Thanks for sharing idol.
I've done a pond b4 small one too n I didn't put nothing in it but rocks n plants no filter or anything N it did good didn't clean it for along time n it had fish n it so idk
want to make a three tiered tub purchased from Home depot and lowes ...pond ....figuring out the way it should be placed is a bugger ...Help!
A few tips - You'll want the largest pond at the very bottom. Smallest at the top. Make sure to install not in a low lying area. If you need assistance with sizing a pump, filter, etc. - please don't hesitate to call me at 866-819-7663 x120. i'm available M-F, 9-4 EST
Nice short video. I live in a place where we get boat load of rain. I have made a decent size pond. Got big mature turtles, little caimen and kois, gold fish and sword fish. Thing is I have had the problem of water keep getting under. Some times rains. I have has to take it apart a few times now... And seems like it's starting to happen to me again. What is the best way to avoid this. I can't change the location
A french drain might be the answer along with building a berm to help redirect incoming water.
Hi , could you tell me please , If established pond fish (ordinary carp goldfish) are moved to a larger pond. Will they start growing larger for the size of the new pond?
If they were in a small or crowded tank/pond that was not filtered or water changed adequately, then yes. Otherwise, not really. It is the poor water quality associated with small or overcrowded tanks that limits their growth, not the size of the tank/pond itself. All goldfish are indeterminate growers, so they continue to grow larger until they die or until conditions become too poor for them to thrive.
I trying to buy a new pond liner to upgrading my current one, I'm on a budget, and I I'm currently looking a pond liner made out of Hdpe, I'm wondering if that would be as good a traditional pvc liner or not?
EPDM rubber is currently the industry standard
i could do with some advise i made a bunch of videos about my ground water problem
How close can a small natural, clay pond be to a house or detached garage foundation if the “soil” is basically solid, red clay?
That might be a question for a contractor and/or engineer.
not sure how to put in the liner into an already rocky gully, where shelves on the sides cannot be formed easily...also inside the projected pool are many large boulders, how can i deal with these when putting in liner..
You would want to use a lot of padding/underlayment.
I dug hole and it filled with water and by next day it filled the 3 foot hole should I relocate it or wait till water drains away and put resin liner in or will it keep filling up thanks .
You should relocate. Appears to be an area where the ground is too saturated without adequate drainage.
What are the steps in making a pond on a muskeg? Had the willows all mulched and cleared and made my riding arena with and have an extra space thought I’d excavate a hole to make a pond but not sure what procedures will water fill in or will water hold if I flood from a well near by?
Definitely not recommended building a lined pond in a swampy/bog area.
I have a 20x20 pond. Just installed. I put it in a high spot, finished the liner shaping and then it rained. At first, the bottom and shelves were still solid today. Yeah - no leaks. BUT. Then I drained it to finish working in it with the other stones/features/filters, etc... and the water that I pumped out, got under the liner, even though I pumped it a good distance away. The initial rain didn't affect it. So, my question is, do I need to tuck the liner's top edge down around the pond's top to some depth to keep that from going back in under the liner when I need to empty it?
Yes, this would be recommended.
what is a good size pond to be consider as easy maintenance? Say if my lot is 10,000 sqft, and home is 3000sqft. Is this big enough lot for a good size pond? Please advise
Plenty. The average starter is generally close to 100 sq ft. But, down the line as fish grow and your enjoyment grows - you'll want to go bigger. Using a garden hose to lay out a design works well.
I want a small bird bath/small pet water feature with a little water fall to prevent mosquito larvae. I need a float valve to insure my recirculating pump does not run out of water and would like a faucet type drain out the side so when I clean it I can attach a hose to water nearby plants. Is this unrealistic? I love the sound and refreshing feeling of moving water but living in a drought prone area I don't want to waste water. I will use gravity flow water from my 300 gallon rain collection tank.
I welcome your suggestions.
Our small pondless water fall kits could be an option, you can find them here webbsonline.com/Category/Kits-to-build-a-complete-small-pondles-waterfall. A compact auto-fill valve (webbsonline.com/Item/Aquascape-Compact-Water-fill-Valve-MPN-88006) can be installed to automatically add water to the feature when needed. A tee fitting with ball valve could be utilized on the main water line off the pump to redirect (water plants).
Thanks for your help.
I finally have a place to drown myself.
Are you or someone affiliated with you located in CA? I'm trying to have someone install a system in my yard and would like more info. Either that or I could diy it.
Sorry, we do not.
I have a question. I dug the pond hole. But the liner was the wrong size. How long can I wait with just the hole until the new liner arrives.
As long as necessary. If it rains you will need to empty the water or let the ground absorb it.
I have a small pond with some fish and stuff in it and I want to expand it so how do I do that without killing my fish or lily pads? I might even want to completely drain it to fix the bottom of the pond so what should I do?
You need to put your fish in a holding tank. Basically a temporary pond of water could be a large container like a plastic tub or paddling pool. Just fill it with the water you already have in your pond.
Thanks
Sheriff Brody: "You're going to need a bigger pond."
Hi,
My late father had a Greenhouse which I have since removed, the stone area is what it stood on which I will put rocks on, I am moving the earth for the water area, I will use it for Newts or Frogs but I don't know wether I want concrete or liner, If I go with concrete how do I put it on the side walls? I understand I will need a few inches of gravel on the base before the concrete is laid but again what about the sides?
Thanks for any help.
We pretty much only deal with rubber liner installations. Good luck on your venture.
If your building a ground pound then just don't make the walls of the pond steep and you can just mix your concrete nice a thick not runny and it will stay where you poor it. If your planning on steep walls then you may need to build shuttering out of wood to poor the concrete to hold it in. Or build the walls with blocks then render the blocks.
@@Crazyoldman84 Thanks, the wall will be straight up, so can I put breeze block up then render?
or put render up but won't that leave a gap when removed?
Can I just lay the concrete on the base then do the wall/shuttering after?
@@Crazyoldman84 P.S,
I assume I will have to place Galvenised steel on the base AND wall of the pond do it's IN the concrete.
Thanks
Can I post a couple of picture? I’m doing a pond and after hearing this, I think I might need to move where I’m doing it. Really bummed right now. I got to think this through!

What is the difference between EPDM and PVC Liner? Because where I live the price of epdm is double then pvc, I'm interested in knowing if it is worth the extra money.
Different materials completely. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) liner is a rubber with generally a limited lifetime warranty. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) often does not hold up in comparison and becomes brittle over time.
Even if the pvc is completely covered and does not come in contact with direct sunlight? How much time do you think the PVC will hold when it's completely covered? More than 10 years?
I would say so. Maybe even 20.
@@WebbsWaterGardens very good, as i said pvc is half the price of epdm in here, so 15 20 years is fine by me lol Thanks ☺
I want to add rocks to my pond. I used a tarp as a liner. In my old pond I used tarps and I only had to replace them every 2 years. I wouldn’t take out the old tarp when I put in the new one. I’d just remove the fish drain it and add the new tarp. I was happy to get another pond put in at my new place. I’m already wanting to go bigger. I may just end up putting in a 2nd one.
Can you place plants straight onto the gravel rather than plant pots?
You can, yes
Can I build a pond in a rocky area?
We recently had a 20 feet deep sink hole open up, which we’re considering making it a pond instead of the trying to fill it back in. Is this a good idea?
Would not recommend, as you cannot guarantee it will not get deeper.
Agree that sounds risky.
However you could build a pond elsewhere and use the excavated dirt to fill the sinkhole.
Yes
I think it sounds fun.
Welp. Best of luck to meeee.
Well mine just got bigger
Koi Pond 3 months past completion date by person of profession LOL - so many errors. Question please - the shelf is getting narrower - in 4 weeks a part of the shelf has gone from 6" down to less than 4". Why? What process was not done to create this? Besides the complete improper way of putting the the 45ML liner. I only know of of this now due to the delay I began researching all things. Anyone please help with why shelf around pond is getting narrow - is is eroding????? Live in area with thick rocky dirt.
Definitely sounds like the soil creating the shelf wasn't tamped well enough prior to the liner going in, and it is eroding.
@@WebbsWaterGardens I'm really in a pickle - I have studied so much I know I could finish the Koi Pond - aging is putting a dampler on that thought. LOL Would you please answer one more question - my son brought over is underwater extension camera - I got in the pond and took a video of the bottom - the liner is NOT secured flat to the bottom of the pond. I noticed a few inches floating up - it's two pieces poking straight up with a gap inbetween. Much worse than I thought - as I walked down the length of the pool the liner sticking up - rather waving in the water - at the far end is at least 8" - I can just swish back and forth in water. Before we spend any more money to complete with a new person or before I pay for some remaining material cost - I need more knowledge on errosion. Plan to take the video to a foundation company or if I can find a larger more experienced Koi Pond builder - not many in my area that I'm aware. Certainly appreciate your feedback!!!! Thank You. (example of one issue - this person purchase a Pond Kit for a 4,100 gallon Pond. Our pond is 1,472 gallons and I don't feel I should be paying for a Pond Kit 3 times the size needed - oh geez, I could go on - just trying to know what is laying ahead and still do the right thing for materials in our possession. Could I call you???
What water is for fish pond?,,,, how to make a water pond for fish pond?,,,
When adding water, make sure a dechlorinator is used. Dechlorinators are water conditioners that remove chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals.
This ain’t no pond, it’s a big fish tank.
I build a pond 9x9 ft every night l loose water from 12-18 inches I have tried to look for punters by taking the liner out but still loosing water what do I do?
First thing is turn off the pump for a night and identify if the pump is pushing it out.
"Let me add 3 more things to stress about when making your own pond"
Yes it works hahaha
As a contractor I can tell.you I hate ponds they are expensive and difficult to construct i leave it to the pond guys yall know your stuff and yes I've done them but i dont build ponds anymore
Ya I built my pond in a run off and the walls caved in and the ground water pushed my pond liner up and it ripped in 1 place due to all of this, so now in April 2019 I get to buy some concrete rebar and cynder blocks and reconstruct everything or I'll build a above ground wooden frame pond...decisions decisions
I made all three🤦🏽♂️
1st mistake don’t use aqua scape they will dig a hole fill it with rock and leave no room or depth for the fish to swim.
Live the aquascape lifestyle
I just want a pond for my Traxxas when I wash off
Summit??
Must guess before watching is one mistake is not making it big enough
Do I detect a British accent there?
Just a Baltimore accent!
I made 0 mistakes!

why is it important to put predatory fish in my pond
I only want to keep Martian octopus in my pond and I don't need filters or plants, just live human food.. 🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙
I would like to donate my mother in law.
Can you place plants straight onto the gravel rather than plant pots?
Yes you can , this way they absorb nutrients
I say don't, just because I know how invasive plants can get. Once the roots grow everywhere good luck!
