      Chris Oliver totally understand if you have not touch or felt these waterfall filters. They are professional/contractor grade. You can buy diy grade, not the same. It’s been designed and improved for 20 plus year. It might look expensive but you don’t see them second hand or broken. We replace and have a boneyard full of other cheaper components that we have had to rip out. The cheapest way to build a waterfall is once. It’s not like a TV or a toaster, you can’t upgrade or change it just like that!

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  4 роки тому +1

      Chris Oliver they also take out a lot of building your own waterfall filter I have seen lots of DIY versions that the creators love. You can build your own or pay for the professional unit. That is not going to cause you or the people that buy your house a headache in the future

      @@ThePondAdvisor I didn't mean to come across as flippant Mark, I was just shocked at the price. I guess it's a case of buy nice or buy twice and the overall effect is very nice so I take your point. I understand why you would recommend them and customers willing to invest that kind of money want the best. I'm not in any way criticising you, you clearly know your trade and are a true craftsman!

    Hi, thanks for putting these videos out. I’d like to request if you will, that maybe slow your video a touch and explain a little more what you are doing when you seal water pumps, placement of and removal of pumps, underlays, overlays, types of sand/rock placement, etc. while you are doing it. If to save time, make notes in the video that those of us you are watching every detail may learn and understand the right ways. I see that you do teach this on some occasions but many things get missed that are crucial, that maybe come as already obvious to you, but not to me or other eager learners.
    Thank you! Looking forward to another video.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 років тому +3

      Thank you very much, the best way to learn for a lot of people is to have a go. Then repeat. Well that was the best for me anyway. Thank you very much for your kind words. I forget I have been doing this for 30 years and yes I do skip a lot. Hence why I think water features in kit form are the way forward. This allows the builder/installer to concentrate on the creative side instead of the way the features functions.

    I want a similar waterfall but not as strong as I would like it slow flowing for the birds to bathe. What was the final cost for materials for this job and is the pond box essential. I have quite a heap of spoil and I retained the heap by using sleepers which are now rotting and almost falling in due to plants and weight of soil, I think I would be best to take spoil out and have a much lower waterfall rather than the water falling from height at its final entry point.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  4 роки тому +4

      yes the filter needs to run if you are supporting aquatic life. the cost of running is about £60-£80 per years so some would say it’s nothing and other would say it’s not worth keeping the pond fish. if it’s all about the sound for you, then look at the pondless waterfalls they can be turned on and off.

Particularly like the lunch sequences :-D Question - what would you do if you were putting together a rockery mound for a smallish waterfall but the soil is bone dry and very fine? This is the problem I have - it's like working with dry beach sand. Impossible to carve a defined shape for the cascade in it. Should I just drench it and leave it for a bit or is there something else I can do?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  2 роки тому +2

    Hi Mark, fantastic result.
    Watched it about 4 times to see how you work the edpm into the pond and how you create the edges, i was really struggling with that.
    I am rebuilding my own waterfal and have a lot of inspiration, i have a couple of questions if you dont mind😅😅😇😇
    Can you tell me what expanding foam you use and is it safe for fish? im thinking to go with the black scaping foam.
    Also what is the output of the pump and does is run through a pressure-filter or straight to the spillway?
    looking forward to your reply.

      You can make and watch the diy pond filters videos, it’s very hands on, with time you can get all the bits and build a pond filter, I don’t have the time to make my own filters any more. I own install the professional grade ones, as you pay for what you get. You can find cheaper copies online made out of a cheaper plastic, you might have to replace them however in time. They are not built to last!

      you don’t see the waterfall foam, it’s covered in moss or grit. most expanding foams are not fish safe and make a mess the stuff we use is perfect for fish pond and waterfall construction. we do sometimes use the normal PU foam but not on fish ponds only rockery and pondless waterfalls

      It’s better if you don’t use the UVC light as this kills lots of beneficial bacteria that are free swimming. Yes I totally understand you might be better off if you have a traditional pool or a pond, with a bare liner. However if your trying to create more of an ecosystem

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  2 роки тому +1

      Great question, depends on “a short time” this pond and waterfall have been in now for three years. No problem 😉, the way we build ponds and waterfalls are built to last a long time. The beauty off the foam is it takes the impact and moment. We have been back and serviced this pond multiple times and our rock choice is not degrading, yes other landscape stone have fallen apart in the landscape over this time period, we don’t use the cheap local stone for building these feature.

      @@bob.fagg-bois657 we have not built with cement at all since 2013 for ecosystem ponds and water features. Walking and patios a different story, just think of a dry stone wall, the aggregate holds it all in place then add foam as a sealant and bingo, game changer
