Semi-related fun fact: the red spider lily is a very symbolic flower in Japan associated with death and graveyards. This is because all parts of the red spider lily are highly toxic, so people would plant them on top of freshly buried graves to prevent scavenging animals from digging up the bodies.

Somehow this made me think of my father. He lived with 2 forms of cancer for almost 20 years, 15 years longer than was expected. The cancer had spread to just about every tissue in his body. It got to the point where his body could no longer process proteins very well. He had just about no body fat and very little muscle. He had sunken, bruised looking eyes. The man was like a walking skeleton. But he was still walking. He had inoperable, necrotic tissue starting in his chest that he lived with for about 2 years. I swear to god he lived on willpower alone. When he started to decline mentally he went very quickly, as if he had decided he was done and was allowing nature to take him; within 10 days he was gone, when he had lived through so much for so long. It's amazing what the human body can live through.

I "met" Luang Pho Daeng in 2011 with absolutely NO context 😂 Cruising around Koh Samui on a hired moped, I stopped on the side of the road to have a drink. A little girl grabbed my hand and led me over to the box with him sitting in it; just sat out in the courtyard of this temple. She emphatically spoke to me in Thai (explaining how he came to be there I assume) and pointed at his sunglasses, then at mine and laughed while she tried mine on. Then she led me over to a station where she washed my hands, directed my hand to rub & ring a gong that was hanging there, and then led me back to my moped. She forced my helmet back on my head, smacked the top, shouted BYEEEEEE and then ran off giggling.
I think about that encounter a lot. That little girl made my day, but boy was it strange to see kids playing football with this dead guy wearing sunnies just chillin in a box next to them 😂

A little correction. The monk with the sunglasses didn't undergo self mummification as that practice was limited to a small corner of Japan as you said. While the monk in question was a renouned monk from southern Thailand. His body just kinda ended up not decomposing on its own after his death. Many other cases of devout monks not rotting post death in Thailand actually, almost every province has at least one.

That’s pretty interesting! I do have one question, how does it work that he’s a monk and married? I know within many Mahayana schools, they allow monastics to get married, but my familiarity is mainly within Theravada Buddhism so I’m curious, in shingon is monasticism seen more as a kind of being a very dedicated career as a academic or is there something I’m missing on how shingon views monks and nuns?

@@jordanroberts2029 Marriage within Buddhism is general viewed as something secular and seperate from religious practice but I can only really speak on it from a Japanese Mahayana point of view. Japanese monks of all schools tend to marry as the temples are handed down through families (unless you luck out and find one that isn't being manned by a monk). In my time on Koyasan, the academic and spiritual hub of Shingon Buddhism, it was very common to see monks and nuns with their kids and grandkids running around. A good friend of ours helps run the Nanzo-in Temple and it's run by a multi-generational monk/nun family.
On a personal note, I think involvement with the community be it through family or otherwise is important to cultivating compassion.

What I found very interesting about this is even though it was considered a branch of Buddhism, their actions contradicted the words of the Buddha. He taught against self starvation and extreme practices like it, and the body was viewed as a temporary vessle as all things are so the need for mummification is not necessary. It's always so interesting to see how off-shoots of relgions develop and how the time period effects it. Cool video!

And during his search for enlightenment the Buddha also found out that he couldn't attain nirvana by starving or hurting himself (he did so, thinking that he would reach the point but found out he couldn't in that way). This was considered extremely high level practice only to be undertaken by those who were willing to transcend the body and only for those with the highest level of command and mastery over their minds. It was not looked upon as self harm, but practice. The discipline it takes to pull something off is otherworldly. Not that many even attempted it let alone completed it. Buddhism is a life of compassion and peace. Last thing on the monks' mind would be to pressure one of their peers into something like this. In fact if you want to disrobe and stop being a monk or a nun no big deal is made, no judgement and no pressure, you can reordain whenever you wish. Its difficult looking from the outside in with a materialistic Western mindset. We have virtually no references for this in the modern West. We need to open our minds and realize there's many views one can take of the world and the self and many ways of living and culture that are completely alien to us. I've been a monk for a while and am giving it a second go. Monks and nuns and lay supporters are some of the most wholesome people I've met in my life. If you want a wholesome place find your "local" temple. There are a few in the US and in the EU. Buddhist monks and nuns will never tell you what to believe or think in fact you'll find they're some of the most understanding, kind and open people on this world. Of course there are exceptions to this, there always are, but on the whole Buddhism is super chill. This is our practice.

I used to work in an Eastern Orthodox museum and there were several icons related to saints who were/are believed to have died in a "state of prayer", essentially ascetic monks found sitting up after death with less than regular amount of decomposition. I think that there is a definite parallel with both ascetic Orthodox monks and Buddhist Shokushinbutsu. Both are believed to have passed away in a state of prayer and therefore could could facilitate the salvation/enlinghtenment of others. I find that really interesting.

PS: Relating to the temple selling pieces of a Shokushinbutsu's robes as talismans, it's really no different than all the relics sold among both Catholics and Orthodox. The museum I workes in had several pieced that "according to tradition" belonged to Orthodox saints and there was/is a chapel that houses officially verified relics, including tiny pieces of clothing. I've also visited the Cathedral of Trier Germany that is believed to house the Robe of Christ. I'm neither a Christian or a Buddhist, but I find religious traditions endlessly fascinating and occasionally I can find lessons to take away from varied sources. I've tried reading it before on my own, heard a lot about it while in high school, heard about in all sorts of contexts just cuz it's well known. But I never understood the fiction and story until he explained it in his unique way

When you mentioned the talismans made of the clothes the monks had been wearing (20:14), it instantly brought to mind the relics we Catholics have. Pretty much the exact same thing! Relics can be pieces of saints (1st degree, usually bones), items that belonged to saints (2nd degree, typically clothes), or things that have been in contact with the 1st (3rd degree). Like you mentioned at the end, it is always fascinating to me how religions across the globe and time can still have some much in common. I discover this all the time when speaking with my Hindu friend. :)

The big 3 (Christianity, Islam, and Jewdaism) are largely the same faiths influenced more heavily by specific prophets. Many Jews are practically Christians, with a lack of emphasis on Jesus. Likewise many Christians are practically Islamic, they just don't put faith in the prophet Mohammad.
As someone from the US, where you're basically told if you're not Christian you're wrong, that was incredibly eye-opening to learn.

I've always had a pretty good amount pf respect for the monks that even attempt this practice. To see such dedication to their beliefs is kind of inspiring in a macabre way. I also have always found it extremely interesting the parallels between religions across the world, especially when those groups had no or little contact with each other.

Fun(?) fact for any MegaTen/Persona fans in the audience. The demon Daisoujou is actually based off of this practice! It’s the reason he’s always seen with his bell, and why he’s sat in the same position these monks would be in their tomb. I believe the term Daisoujou is just a venerable Japanese term for a certain high rank of Buddhist monk, but his design and general concept originate from this.
