I'd tell her to high-tail it east right now if possible. Storm surge is incredibly dangerous and the increased likelihood of tornadoes make it a life-threatening combination.
I hope your Mom is OK. These things turn on a dime. Where are you going to evacuate to? I’m in Clearwater and it was headed straight for me last night and I’m like where do I go? A friend in CO is like go to Orlando now I’m looking for a hotel for you. I’m like no wait. 24 hours and it shifted a little to the south and will go straight up the middle towards Orlando. BUT I’m not saying I’m safe either. 3 days ago it was going to make landfall in Jacksonville way north. You just don’t know I’m sure your Mom knows the drill if she’s been here for awhile. They’re still screaming at MY county (pinellas) get out NOW! And they’ve been doing that for three days and haven’t stopped. I’ve gotten 6 warnings on my cell the last at 6pm tonight saying oh you’re directly in the path for landfall. I’m like no… that was 24 hours ago. Trust your Mom’s judgement and well I do pray. Honestly I’ve been here 20 years and there is no where to go and as hard as it is to get out, it’s like 10X’s harder to get back (everyone is rushing back to their property to assess the damage IF there is any).
So the next update will be at 1am. THAT’S what you look at. Just every 8 hours. Sometimes 6 hours.

Not diminishing the possible devastation, scientists and engineers should be working on ways to stop these in their track. I understand satellites can detect an eye forming when its about 1/4
of a mile across. Small enough to have one of the weaker walls blown apart with munitions or microwave technology. It's time we try to control this terrible life threatening hazard.
