Great idea. I like your method. The only thing I would do differently would be to cut down the sacrificial candle, insert it in the tube and pour hot wax around it. This would eliminate fiddling with the wick. Great video!
Hi there Charles, thanks very much pal. Yes, good idea, just swap it up and try a few things mate, good stuff. Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Cheers, Ant 👍
Great video there, one of the reasons I did not buy the UCO candle was the price of the spare ones. I'm off to fleabay now to get me a UCO candle 😁 Thanks for sharing with us. ATB from sunny Wales 👍
welshboyoo7 haha nice one mate and why not, once you have the lantern your laughing bud 👍 hope you and the family are healthy mate and thanks for watching and commenting.
Anthony Jacobs Hello Anthony, great name btw 😊. Thank you buddy, hope it gives you something to do to pass the time we all have. Stay healthy mate, Ant 👍
Hi Ant.... great video mate. i remember you saying how you made them, so this was great to see. I think toilet roll tubes are at a premium nowadays lol. I will have to give this way a try. Like you say they UCO candles are quite expensive when you are using them frequently. I noticed not long ago that you can buy UCO candle moulds on ebay. They are about £20 for a 3 candle mould, but I prefer this kind of method you show. Thanks for taking the time Ant..... I hope you and the family are keeping well during these times. Take care, all the best, Mark :)
Mark Bailey Hi Mark, thank you pal very kind of you. Haha yeah all these people who bought way too many, they’ll have UCO’s for years lol. I didn’t know till you said about the moulds, oh well it’s something to do isn’t it while we are stuck in mate. I’ll go have a look though, see what they are like 👍. Thanks once again Mark, you keep healthy my mate.
Straightforward! I just measured the cardboard roll on aluminum foil, and it looks just right. I have looked at several videos and I like your method best-- gonna give it a try. i think your approach is practical. Peace!
Would a kitchen roll tube be a similar size? Also, if you trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each light the candle will last longer, burn cleaner and brighter
@Ant Survive The Night thanks for your reply Ant. I haven't actually picked up my lamp yet, I will be shortly but I'm far, far too cheap to buy their own candles. I'm going to mess around with beeswax, soy wax and paraffin wax. If I find anything useful out other than how to ruin my kitchen, I'll update here
No problem at all Adam. Yeah they are way over priced. They do last an awful long time though I'll give them that. Haha yeah don't wreck your kitchen matey haha. Cheers man 👍
Hello there Sandy mate. Thank you, yeah I've made a load of these now pal and they seem to work great, I wouldn't recommend the scented wax though as it's very strong in shelters like the lavvu haha, I was coughing my head off hahaha. All the very best to you and your family too for the new year buddy. Be nice to do a camp with you at some point if your free this year, it would be fab to finally get to meet you dude 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight Would be great to have a camp out with you at some point Ant. I'm not too sure just yet what my plans are for the year, but will see what can be done. Maybe you could come down to Wiltshire or I may pop up and include a camp on one of my motorcycle journeys:)
Good stuff Sandy, yeah I'm easy pal, I can get to you or like you say if you fancy incorporating it into one of your motorcycle trips we could change your trip up a little and I could me you at one of the Lakes in the Lake District for a canoe camp if your up for that. Camp on a island for the night before you head off on the bike. It would be something different for you to break up the journey pal. As I say I'm easy matey 👍
You might look into the cardboard cores of the plastic vegetable baggies in the produce section the ones they use at Walmart are about the right size on the inside so you don't have to cut some down like you would the toilet paper cores. I have a small grocery bag full of the critters. I was using them to make coils for antique tube Radio sets.
Hi Jack, oh good shout mate. I'm in the U.K and unfortunately our bags are just in a roll in their own but its worth looking in to other items that may use them. Thank you very much and thank you for watching, Ant 👍
Nice one mate - the candles are expensive to get which I think is a shame, as these are nice lanterns. I'll have a go at making some when mine run out - thanks !
MCM Outdoor Show they are mate. I’ve currently have no glass in mine at the moment, I broke it on a camp recently but yeah they are a good lantern for sure mate. Yeah have a go, it’s fun Chris. Thanks for watching bud 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNightOn the strength of your video I ordered the lamp yesterday for delivery today. I've made two batches of candles and both have been a learning experience ie slightly too long and the spring mechanism doesn't fit inside the candle sleeve. I've also had some jammed inside tubing and those which are too long will become bonus tealights!
@@AntSurviveTheNight Now the proud owner of 21 home-made candles which seem to work well. I've made a few mistakes along the way including a few 'bonus' tealights and learned not to spray silicone releasing spray onto wax because it is very flammable and two moulds caught light (I was doing it outdoors on concrete slabs). Definitely worth doing and saves a fortune on the genuine UCO candles . Thank you for publishing your video which was my inspiration.
Smart little video that thanks for sharing, saw it on the Stealthy Bushcraft group and misread it as I thought youd be making the casing lol. However great little tip there, have given you a sub my friend. Atvb.
Raymond Molloys Wild Camps Hi Raymond, thanks for coming over mate from FB. Ahh right na, I wish I could make them lol. Thank you very much also for your sub, I really appreciate it bud. Cheers and stay healthy, Ant 👍
manstuff tv Hi Manstuff, yeah anything that saves on the cash is good isn’t it 👍. Yeah they are a good lantern mate for sure, worth a purchase. Thanks bud.
Great idea but if you use plastic carrier bags ( we all have a Cartier bag full of carrier bags!!) So instead of cling film, cut out squares from the carrier bag, then secure with masking tape,no run off!!!! Hope that helps
Lundy's Wildcamp/Bushcraft Hi Jimmy, thanks mate yeah I’m hoping it will save people some cash and plus it gives us all something to do doesn’t it bud 👍. Yeah I’m getting my head round a hammock camp in the garden, just trying to work it out. All good here my friend and I’m hoping the same for you guys? Thanks again bud
Cory See Hi Cory, great to hear from you and thanks mate. Hope the family are all well? Na, we are in lock down here buddy, just allowed a hour a day for exercise so no camps just yet. It’s hard, the death rate is still increasing but soon we are hoping it will level out and start to drop by the end of next week. How about you all over there bud?
@@AntSurviveTheNight Doing well so far but it's just now reaching my area, stretching south here from New York and north from Florida, I think we just passed 3,000 cases in my state. I'm forced to work my ass off, all the clients I cleaned for once a week now all want nightly sanitization so I'm stuck with the kids all day and work half the night... fuckin wooped buddy but at least I'm still kickin I reckon.

Hi William, thanks for the comment. Oh right, I take it we are talking about the UCO Candles then. You heated water over your candle light well that's new to me haha good in you pal. Thanks for watching, Ant 👍
How do the wicks burn? I've made some of these but I haven't found a wick that burns like it should. They're either falling into the puddle and going out or they're standing so tall I get 3 inch flames unless I cut them down every hour or two.
Hi Rick, I've made a few batches now and they all have been working as they should mate. I'd just keep playing around with them Rick. Thanks pal, Ant 👍
@@AntSurviveTheNight I just found half a pack of birthday candles in a drawer. I'm gonna try one of those wicks next time and see what happens. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky. 🤷🏻♂️
Use the candle holder itself as the mold, seal end and gaps with tape. Much easier, hope this helps.
