Next week, I get to take this car to its first Jag car meet! Then just after that, we’ll be taking it to get all those MOT advisories sorted! Stay tuned and thank you for the support 👌🏻
If you are planning to keep this car for some time, it would make great content if you would facelift the car using the 2008 front end and adding xenons headlights,it would really modernize it:) btw, you can also retrofit carplay to the original navigation system screen
Yeah I’m convinced a 4 wheel laser track will sort the issue I’m just disappointed they didnt do this before you picked it up the first time, rule one from working in garages for over 15 years no matter how small the suspension of steering work alignment check is paramount before customer takes delivery, I know they said there’s was broken but that’s not your problem, nice one Joel 👍😉💪
The trouble with 4 wheel alignment is that the rear nuts are normally so rusted that they can’t move them. So on your car that is over 20 years old they have no chance 😮
I went through this with my Jag and you’ve just got to persevere mate. The rust is going to cost you. There’ll be annoying shit along the way. It doesn’t matter what you put in to it compared to what it’s worth, it’s how long you can enjoy it without moving on to the next thing.
Hi Joel, complete (4 wheel) alignment is definitely a must! Even when you do the tiniest of work on the suspension, you must ensure that this is done. Otherwise car can perform really weirdly, scary , upredictably. No wonder you can feel how car battles with itself, when rear axle fights the front 🙂 I wish you good luck !
It's incredible what a small issue in tracking or alignment can make to a car's "feel". I had a 1999 XK8 and a tyre fitter re-tracked the fronts (very badly as it turned out) after changing the tyres. On the motorway it felt dangerous. Was completely cured by a correct re-track.
No excuses for the garage involved, a proper road test after such work is essential, they should have picked up the issues and advised 4 wheel alignment is required. Not good.
The first page you showed would have been beforehand, That rear toe was out by a long way, like more that a cm across the car. With the wheels toeing outwards turns are going to feel like a drift. The car would have been very hard to drive in this state.. The second page looks spot on.
I do like that Jag and I hope you get it sorted. I currently drive an Alfa 159 ti SW diesel which is the most relaxing drive on a motorway - at 2000rpm it does an indicated 73mph and doesn't break the bank in fuel costs. However, I have a hankering for a first generation Saab 9-5 Aero. Bullet-proof engines and Swedish engineering at its finest. I had two of these, but only the 2.0 petrol models and was involved in a serious crash in the last one. Myself, my wife and my son got out of the car without so much as a bruise. All the emergency services who attended said that the Saab was one of the best cars for safety. The car was repairable, and the bonus was that I had an supposedly equivalent courtesy car while my car got fixed, which took about six weeks. The courtesy car? A six month old Mercedes C class Avantgarde!
You may be concerned that you made a long video just about an alignment issue but this shows the importance of having such a check after having suspension work done, or just due to deterioration because the dreadful state of our roads damages/wears our suspension out prematurely
I think you mean "Now theyve tightened up the fastnener they spotted that they hadnt tightened up, but just not told you thats what they did, then the car drives fine and just needs wheel alignment"
Like you i too have an S-Type mine being an 05 3.0 v6. I adore it and had it for a year or so and nothing major wrong with it apart from this bloody annoying EPB that has stuck on Handbrake. If i can at least get it disengaged and taken to a jag specialist to sort it out. Not many garages want to deal with EPB problems but once fixed i will not use that system just put in park. I promised the wife once i have to start forking out for problems with it i will sell , so its on its first yellow card.
I had an Xtype with 330k on it. I spent 5k in about 4 years before being hit with a 2k welding bill, yet everything else I had done, job after job working through it, regardless I still miss my Jag.
I am also trying to chase that one moment of enjoyment with a 1999 CLK 430 in the same red you had yours in, it seems to be one thing after another so... I feel your pain!
I had a 330d e46 and everytime I changed part of suspension I had it tracked, they thought I kept kerbing car till I had to explain, 4 times in total within a 3 month period and car drove straight as an arrow
Luxury cars need 4 wheel allignments and not many garages have the proper Hunter allignment machines.. Kwikfit do and I always use them for allignments👍🏻
Great vid, Joel. Really enjoying the Jag series...keep up the good work. I run a 2007 range rover sport - needless to say, it presents me with the same challenges that you come across .... economically unsound, but cost to change and still potentially have similar issues means you keep ploughing the money in!! What I'd consider to be 'premium bangernomics' 🙂
I seem to be having near enough problem with my Audi at the moment. Almost feels like your telling my story. It’s been in the garage multiple times. Spent above £1000 in it and still feels dangerous. I too need a 4 wheel alignment but the adjustment bolts are seized so they need changing before the alignment can be done.
Hi Joel. Great videos. I have a 2004 2.7 diesel S Type. Great car. I also need to get my tracking sorted following new suspension and also take the sill covers off to check for any corrosion. They are great cars and drive really well. I love mine on a long journey. It feels special even though it is not a costly car to buy. They do cost a bit more to run though. I predict that the numbers will decrease over the next few years as they are already becoming a rarer sight on the roads.
Hi Joel. I feel your pain mate. What I find extraordinary, when you take a car in and explain what is happening, immediately let’s put it on the ramp and have a look. What I want is the mechanic to come out with me or, drive it himself to experience the problem first hand then, put it on the bloody ramp. The problem is, nowadays, in the main, they are not mechanics, they are fitters. On another subject Joel. I’m looking at a Rover 75, it has the big shaped rear number plate like your Jaaag 🤗. It has a standard oblong rear plate which I would swop for a shaped plate. Where did you get yours done please?
Thanks for that Richard Hammond ; compared with you buying back a superannuated XJR that you had previously sold and then throwing a shed load of money at it possibly in a vague attempt to make a bit of content for UA-cam Joel looks positively savvy and sensible
Plain and simple....that printout ....where it's red.... especially with a X on it ....that's REALLY bad I'm surprised you could turn the steering wheel
It's a fffwonderful car and I hope you get to the point where you want it to be. I've just bought a "cheap" BMW V8 so I can relate to the ever present slight anxiety
I had to sell a couple of cars in my time because the alignment was off and no shop was ever able to fix it. Very frustrating to drive a car with a poor alignment.
The garage who fitted the new joints should have counted the number of threads to get the new ones back in the original place, looks like they've just put them on anyhow, 4 w alignment is only 40 quid anyway. You'll track out your new tyres in no time with alignment out.
You had new tyres, all of the preservatives need to wear out, in about 500miles this happens, until then the sidewalls are soft and allow for some flex feeling like the back is sliding. Thats the first thing a garage should ask.
I am also trying to figure out why Richard Hammond has dyed his hair black and not natural brown ? as it looks obvious anyway got to love the holy trinity of motoring journalism , Hammond Clarkson and May great memories they gave us and dont forget OLIVER!!!!
Hi Joel. As for things I would like to see on your channel, do you have any plans to retry the John O'Groats to Lands End run in a Range Rover? Hope your wedding goes well. Cheers.
Your initial Garage shouldn't have fitted the new track Arms and stuff if they were not capable or willing to get it aligned, should have factored it in as part of the job, looks like they just threw them on tbh.
I had to sadly cut ties with my mechanic of 6 years as recently he started not doing the work properly , paid him £300 to fit new pads and discs but he never bled the brake system so when i brake the pedal is very soft , car does stop but it takes ages , also how can a car with broken shocks and springs pass ? onyl reason i keep it is because its rare a Red Mitsubishi Colt , now everyone will know who i am as its literally the only one in Berkshire LOL
Glad the jag is a bit better but the jaguar specialist (not, don’t go there again) should have done a 4 wheel alignment and test drive before they gave it back to you.
