I am a retired Arizona state trooper and trust me, the Mustangs will not be issued to ALL troopers. They will be used as pursuit vehicles in areas they have a lot of pursuits. I was issued a new 89 Mustang back in 1989. I loved it as it was much quicker than the Ford Crown Pigs at the time. I can tell you that most troopers would be keeping the Chargers and would be buying Chargers because it was a 4 door and large trunk which made them great for police work. The Mustangs are very limited as a two door and a tiny trunk. Dodge has really screwed up doing away with the Hemi Chargers.
Thanks for your service. I was pulled over by chp and they said they got me at 98 on radar. My ticket says approximate speed 99. Is that a significant issue? Maybe, grounds for dismissal? This was in a 65 zone and at 2:45 am.
Obviously they’re not gonna be issued to all troopers… still need to be able to put somebody in a backseat..
Hello Tysonbear, I am not familiar with California traffic laws but hopefully, you can take a traffic school to avoid the points. If not, you may as well pay the fine. What most people are not aware of is that all 55 65 and 75 mph speed limits are what is called "absolute speed limits." This is different than "speed not reasonable and prudent." In most jurisdictions school zone speed limits and 25 mph residential limits are absolute as well. This means that if you go even one mph over the posted limit, you are in violation. I used to go to court on a citation I issued and the defendant would tell the judge that the traffic was light and conditions good and his speed was not unreasonable. It's not a defense on freeway or highway speed limits. You could go to court but if the officer got you at 98 or 99 mph if most likely would not matter to the judge as, either way, you were well above the posted limit. Your only other option would be to contest the ticket and get a court date and hope the officer fails to show up. Then the ticket would be dismissed. With 35 years in LE I always showed up for court but a lot of officers would fail to show up. Good luck.

Blame the Europeans (stellantis) they have no business owning a once American brand. They don't understand what Americans like or want, and as a result they are running Dodge/Chrysler into the ground. Or maybe even on purpose. Wouldn't be surprised. I have disliked Dodge since they discontinued the Viper. Them getting rid of the Challenger and Charger and Chrysler completely rebranding and becoming more and more "un-American" made me dislike them more.

No they won't. They will be used as a pursuit vehicle. When I was a kid 1985-1993 NC and VA state troopers had Ford Mustang Lx coupes. And those things were fast for the time. Some of them had Paxton Superchargers on them. It was an exciting time. The police chases on I 95 used to be epic. GA and FL state troopers were bad ass too.

Howdy Ya'll, I enjoy reading the post and replies. I was a trooper with NCSHP from 1973-1980, I left for several reasons but low pay and our poor judicial system were primary. My best vehicle was a 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury, 440 magnum. After a little love under the hood, it would bury the needle (140 +), but it took time as this was a heavy car. That said, the weight made it more stable at higher speeds unlike todays plastic vehicles.
I would like to share my thoughts if I may, don't take my comments as arogant as I was young at one point ( 1956 Nomad, 427 with 2 800cfm double pumpers on a tunnel ram, 4 speed, dyno at 600+WHP.) I saw much tragedy as a trooper, from a young mother and her 4 month old killed by 2 street racers to a family of 6 killed by a drunk driver. The thrill is not worth the risk, you may be a skilled driver but most drivers are not. Imagine your family driving along when mom decides to turn left and is not expecting a car passing her at 120 mph in a no passing zone. I have pictures of the aftermath, mom and 3 kids DOA, 4 young teens DOA in the speeders car. I wish there was a place you could run what you brung on a wide open area with no innocent folks around, an abandoned airport like Rockingham where we did our training in patrol school. Saying " I'm sorry", won't make it go away. Pushing the go fast loud peddle is so easy and the left tire raising off the ground may give us a boner but you dead or in a chair with wheels is a high price to pay. Enough preechin, Ya'll be safe. Wish I could post the pictures but.

In the late 90s I merged on I 45 in Houston in my Firebird. Saw a z28 in my rearview and floored it. Red and blue lights lit me up. Z28 was a Texas state trooper. Waved as he passed by. No ticket just had some fun. 2 door pursuit cars are not new. Love my 2016 awd charger pursuit btw. People remember their manners.

In 1985, Va State Police had the 1985 Mustang 5.0 with a 5-spd manual transmission. I used to drive one as a trooper and they were very fast. Guilford County has had their 5.0's for about 2 yrs now. I used to see them all the time on the I-85 bypass around Greensboro.

I used to work at a Chevy dealership and we had one of those come in. There was a bubble under the carpet in the foot rest that you had to press to put the car into gear. Smart way to make sure people couldn't steal them.

Have seen a few marked, and unmarked Ford Explorer Highway Patrol SUV's as well.
I was arrested, and takin to Jail in a 1990 Mustang GT. Handcuffed behind my back sitting in the front seat. It wasn't a fun ride. I'm here to tell you, they can and will take you to jail in the mustang.

Best drivers know you have to lose them in the corners, and those mustangs will outhandle any scat pack any day. Just pull over don’t try and waste your life

I know for a 100% fact that NC currently has several unmarked 6th gen Camaros, as well as a couple of Challengers. The Camaros are Riverside Blue Metallic, and the Challengers are Triple Nickel Silver. They've had them for years now. Factory black wheels, 5% tint all around. No Police markings whatsoever, but hidden blue lights everywhere like a Christmas tree.
I'm from CT, they used to run 5.0 mustangs too back in the late 80s and 90s...they even ran blacked out grand nationals for several yrs for highway patrol. Now it's just ford explorers and taurus

I remember when CT used the Mustangs,Buick T Type Regals in the '80s-early '90s.I remember also they used Mazda MX6 Turbos too then.I lived near Hartford(Rocky Hill)and many speeders were fooled with the Mazda's.Ford now is the only rear wheel drive,V8 car now.Camaro is finished after this year.Vettes not included.Caddy has the Black wing but too frail to be a cop car.The new Charger I guess wont have a police package for '25.

If you coming thru Hwy 64/264 Interstate 87/540 in Knightdale, NC in Wake County! Knightdale PD have a Ghost Mustang 5.0 as they patrol car!! Folks don’t sleep, I personally have seen this car at lease 3 times in 2023! I believe they are a head of the game! Shout out to them, because they know with all these 392’s Hellcat’s ZL1 and the list goes on for starter, at lease they trying to do something! Personally I would beat them in their own game, I would be patrolling in a 392 or Hellcat and will be getting next to you! I can only hope the Pony Car can keep up!!

This is all too familiar. I'm an old muscle car guy, and back in 1987 I was buying a new 5.0 Mustang LX. Happened to be at the same time New York State had begun using 5 L unmarked Mustangs on the New York State Thruway. It also turned out that they were the exact color that I was looking for, a fairly dark blue almost midnight blue color. Long story short, I had to look all over the place since the state troopers had acquired most of the stock at that time, or at least that's what the dealer told me. My dealer eventually found one in Pennsylvania and dealer traded for it. I previously had a 1985 5 L GT. Both were phenomenal cars. I miss them to this day.
Unfortunately about 5 years later, I was driving a Toyota pickup to work one morning, and had a rollover vehicle accident, not caused by me but regardless the end result was paralyzed from the chest down, quadriplegic wheelchair user ever since. Don't get me wrong, as devastating as it was, I made the best of it for the first 25 years, it's only been the last three or four that have been most difficult. Sorry for the self editorial, it's not what this is about.

As a life long NC resident, those new fords are going to look nice sitting at the troopers home at restaurant parking lots hanging out somewhere else except on the damn interstates patrolling like they are supposed to. I’ve never in my 58 years seen such a lack of enforcement on our roads. I feel like I’m in the last lap of a nascar race every time I go somewhere. They should be disbanded and give the enforcement to the county. They couldn’t do any worse.

Ford ,Chevy, dodge been providing police pursuit vehicle. Departments swing between the three. Mustangs are strictly pursuit and patrol vehicle

Understand that the mustang was a high Pursuit vehicle on Florida Highway Patrol, they at the time where no way slow and would run down the big ones.

In my state the Fox-bodied Mustangs were issued in 1985-92 as were the Camaros prior to 2002. When the Crown Vic got the 4.6 liter modular engine in 1992 they got away from the Fox bodied Mustangs. GREAT VIDEO!

I'm from Charlotte and there's a police station bessemer city, they been have at least 5-6 unmarked mustangs. I use to work in Belmont and would see them often when we picked up the recycling cans.

I got my first ticket in NC from a trooper in a Fox body mustang when I was 17. This was when they first made the law to wear seatbelts.

One of the agencies in brunswick County NC has been using them at least in the last few years. Went down there to sell some property and watched the unmarked GT fly up and down the main highway catching people speeding.

The reality is that going faster than a 5.0 Mustang is a fool's game. You are literally right on the edge of control and could easily lose it with a twitch of the wheel.
The Highway Patrol does not drive Dodge Charger R/T's. It is a Pursuit. Misinformation like this is why people try to claim they have an R/T when they are trying to sell an old police car. Dodge's police cars have always been called "Pursuits", even back in the 60's.

In the 90's NCHP was driving the mustang with the trunk not the hatchback. They were very light and fast as hell.
Jacksonville NC still has a late 90s model DARE mustang. I saw somebody speed by it and get pulled like they weren't real cops. 😂😂

I remember when the California highway patrol used the 5.0 fox-body Mustangs as pursuit vehicles. They were popular then. A lot of those went into civilian hands when they went to public auction.
Why? They're not allowed to pursue anymore. They're told to stand down, for the safety of the other motorist. Waste of money.
Back in the day when fl. Had the 5.0, trooper told me they only had to go half throtal to catch a speeder. After 3 years they were not worn out. When came up for sale, most all troopers bought them.

There were some black chargers with the silver wrap in NC like the new mustang about 8-10 years ago. They had a colonel that wanted to switch it up and try that but another new colonel came in and switched them back to the silver with black vinyl
I work right across from the state highway patrol office and one of their car lots is maybe a mile away. Coworkers and I are waiting to see some of these new cars in person.

You can definitely arrest and transport in a Mustang. I know because I did exactly that when I was issued a brand new 2009 Mustang GT in late 2008. Texas DPS used them for years also.
I live not far from Nash country. I honestly think they ordered 25 for test trial. But remember this is ford reaching out because they used to have it with crown Vic’s. If they hold up during a lot of idle and beat the crap out of then. On the other hand I vote for Nc state trooper paint . I would like to see what gears engine parameters ( police interceptor etc. they are running?) no doubt if dodge thinks there’s a problem they will come back with a better car as fast if not faster that can haul your ass to jail l!
Yep! 1987 while cruising home to G'boro from Fayetteille got pulled over by a rookie patrol officer. Not for speeding but for passing at the proper broken line too often. Huh? Mustang 5.0. He got embarrassed when I showed up to court in my Firefighter uniform. They wanted to throw it out. No I dont want your "professional courtesy" now. Handle it lawyer.
Wishful thinking. I'm in NC and trust me the Chargers are going nowhere. A Mustang doesn't have a chance against a SRT or hell even an RT. Dodge did screw up but they will keep the Chargers they have because they actually want to catch the criminals.
NC SHP Chargers don’t have prisoner cages. The arrestee sits next to the Trooper so they can keep control over them. These will work just the same. If the prisoner is combative, then they call for local PD or SO to assist with a caged vehicle.
Here in Miami gardens, we have the undercover Ford mustang and Ford f150
Every trooper I've ever worked with transports their prisoners in the front seat. They're the only ones I've seen do this.

I was in Raleigh yesterday and I'm pretty sure I saw one. Had some interesting lights, and a lot of them.
Not all patrol cars are going to be mustangs, I worked with the Nash County Sheriff's Office and we did have Mustangs but the Charger isn't going anywhere
