    Simon's tom sound is the tom sound for me. Bright, open, boomy. Single-ply clear heads, tuned well, with no muffling. When he hits one drum, you can hear the entire kit resonate, like the strings in a piano. Beautiful.

      His tom sound was so distinct I remember in the early 80's you could tell it was him from just that (plus his super-crisp timing and attack.)

      @@yes_head definitely. I remember hearing Pete Townsend's "Give Blood" on the radio in '85 and knowing it was Simon immediately just from the tom sound and the fills.

    Hey JP, I think the thing that “happened” to Simon Phillips was that his house with ALL his shit in it, burned down to the ground, and he lost EVERYTHING.
    I first heard this guy on Mike Rutherford’s first solo album, “Smallcreep’s Day”, which is one of my top ten stranded on a desert island records, definitely as good as most Genesis albums. His work on Pete Townshend’s stuff is kinda legendary as well.

      Hey,the fire happened the end of 2019 a few days after I saw him play Ronnie Scott’s London. He also had an illness back in the early 2000’s while with Toto which caused a pause is his playing for a while.

    This was the very last lineup of musicians (minus Howe, who had been replaced by the equally spectacular Alex Sill) I saw before lockdown in NYC. Made it to all four perfromances, two sets each night. Was sitting so close to the kit that I could feel the air being pushed out of the bass drums on my face. I'd been listening to Si since was 8 years old but had never spoken to him before that first evening. Honestly, one of the kindest human beings I've ever met. He and Bob Graham talked to me as though we had known each other for years. It's beyond wonderful when a lifelong hero surpasses your hopes/expectations of him/her as a person. That doesn't always happen.
    p.s. Dave Weckl is a really great guy, as well.

    Very Alan Holdsworth & Bruford-ish. Nice donation. Love Simon

    I had heard him with Satch and knew he was in Toto, and I'm sure I heard some other performances/recordings he'd done before, but it wasn't until I heard his work with Hiromi on The Trio Project (along with Anthony Jackson on contrabass) that I *really* heard him. That trio and the four albums they made are just utterly astounding to me. The way Hiromi, Anthony, and Simon play together is the sort of magic you always hope for and almost never reach, I feel. He's one of the best I've ever heard (and the other two are too, obviously, but I am here to praise the awesomeness of Simon right this second)

    If I'm being honest - just the layout of his kit says that he can probably out-Neil Neil, and also swing if he wanted to....😙

    • @sethcashman1011

      He doesn’t swing like Philly or Papa Jo, but he can play straight ahead convincingly.

    What gave him an advantage to play differently is he’s a left handed drummer playing on a right handed kit , This meant he didn’t have to cross his hands and it gave him a free open right hand Though complicated and hard music , This isn’t songs that you could remember,

    • @jeffvomero1242
      @jeffvomero1242 Рік тому

      He started open hand playing when he added the #1 tom. He was having a hard time getting to it and learned how to play open handed. Great way of playing for some, not all.

    • @sethcashman1011
      @sethcashman1011 Рік тому +1

      If I remember correctly, he began playing open-handed as a session drummer in ‘74.

      @@jeffvomero1242 I believe Ringo was left handed and played a right handed kit , ,Some people it’s easy to play with both hands for others 🤢

      He’s actually right handed,played drums that way until he added the 10” tom and positioned the hi hat lower. Mid 70s

    I don't find dif time sigs very impressive. If it has the right feel - if it's exciting - that's what really matters. I love the way Collins, Peart, Humphreys, Bruford, Caliutta, etc can rock out in odd time sigs. Phillipes is awesome on 801 live and Rutherford's solo album Smallcreep's Day, Jon Anderson's Animation as well as all those Beck albums.

    I have all of Judas Priest's albums from the 70's and remembered seeing him with the band at some point. Sin After Sin is good. Stained Class that followed was pretty good then they lost me as most bands did in the early 80's...

    First time I heard him play was the opening track on Burning for Buddy Volume 1 that Neil did for his tribute. Never heard him before and never listened to Toto other than one song that was played to death on MTV. Everyone knows the song. Lol. I was blown away beyond blown away when I heard his track. The drum solo in the song in incredible.
    About a year later I was watching PBS as they had some jazz thing on and it caught my attention and Simon was playing and it was incredible watching him.
    I never got into jazz really other than the big band stuff until my kids started music. So now I listen to it all the time.
    As for Iron Maiden, No. I highly doubt his playing influenced them. They rarely use double bass. In fact I don’t think Nikko used a double bass until very new albums. He’s been labeled as one of the faster single bass players so if you listen to a song called Where Eagles Dare, you can hear how fast he can play with one foot. But rarely will you hear double bass with Maiden. And I hate Judas Priest so no clue if his playing style continued after he left. I’m a maiden guy. Maiden > Priest.

    Oh hell yeah! Simon is the man. So freaking good. His band is also white hot... all great players. I think I caught this tour at Yoshi's in Oakland. Protocol is a must for fans of late 70's vintage fusion. I'm also intrigued by his current project with Derek Sherinian. That wiki article has been hijacked by some metal head. Simon Phillips should not be thought of as a metal drummer. Re: no monitors, only the keys guy had anything in his ears. They must have been totally relying on speakers in the room.
