    HUGE fan of yours, and the EF. So grateful for your presence on YT. I have had 3 EFs, and currently own a 91 Si. I was always the stupid noob who just forked over money for the dealership to fix my car(s) in the past. I was always too scared to DIY. I have a mechanically adept family member who knows cars inside out, and teaches me lots, but he lives very far from me. Your vids have played an enormous part in taking up the slack, and helping me build the confidence to solve my own problems, and take care of my car. Your voice is clear, your lighting is good, and your explanations are detailed. I've never subscribed to anyone on YT, but tonight I made an exception for you. Keep making these vids. They are one of the keys to keeping the EFs out there, running forever.

      I never bang on any of those parts with a hammer. The O-ring gaskets for the 88-95 civic have these little nubs on the sides of the rings which hold them into place, no need to hammer them on.
      It's quite possible that on that particular valve cover (96-00 civics) the o-rings are built differently and are similar to a seal such as an axle seal, cam shaft seal, or oil pump seal where it's strengthened with a metal sleeve inside that particular gasket. I'm not very familiar with those engines as I have never owned a 96-00 civic.

      1) Thank you SO much, Jon. You saved me a trip to the shop, as well as some money. I also am relieved to not have to hit anything with a hammer.
      2) I own a 1991 Si hatch, in teal. It's aaaaaaaaalmost the spitting image of your teal EF, so I was really pleasantly surprised, when I saw your, "perfect for me," video. I felt like you had made a video just for me, about my particular car. Haha. I even have the Hotwheels toy version, I love this car so much.
      In 1991, I bought a brand new black one, which was stolen in 1997. From 1999 to 2005, I owned a red Si, which I had to sell for reasons unrelated to the car. I went through many years of deep regret at losing the red one, and then last year, I acquired the teal one, in nearly-mint condition, with only 100,000 miles on the clock. It even has hard-to-find, factory options, like the centre console and arm rest. I was elated at discovering such a car. Barring an accident, or act of God, I am never, ever going to let this car go. I know the pain -- twice over -- of losing an EF, and I never want that taste in my mouth again. And that is exactly why I regard your YT content as so profoundly precious. This is my, "lifetime car," and I am counting on your help from now, into the future. You're doing good work, Sir.

    Hi Jon, I completed my DPFI to MPFI conversion on my EF last year, and now changed the spark plugs, wires and gaskets. I appreciate your guidance. My only previous mechanical experience was changing the oil and rotating the tires. The car runs much "happier" now, thanks and keep up the good work!

    Awesome video! I had the same issue with my wagon stalling out due to oil getting into my spark plugs. I replace the same gaskets along with the ignition control module everything is running great now. Excited to see your mpfi conversion I've been thinking about it for a while. keep the videos coming!

    This video is amazing very helpful. I have the same year Honda but it's the sedan DX model and it's been leaking. Not awhile lot and this video helps a lot. I was kinda scared of taking off the valve cover and replacing the gaskets but with this video it seems like I can't mess up. Thanks a lot dude

    Dude your channel is exactly what a DIY channel should be. This is my go to reference material for my EF. I have a question as far as the top end seals go. Is there going to be anything different on my 90 Si d16a6 that I should be aware of before going foward, or is it the same as you showed? And keep up the amazing work. Your my hero.

      Your A6 motor will be exactly the same as the process that I just did. Each nut and bolt removed will be exactly like this!!

      Cool. What's your opinion on felpro gaskets compared to the OEM Honda ones?

      They are good for easy to replace gaskets. I've used the oil pan, camshaft, and h2o pump gaskets with no problems. The valve cover gaskets are hit or miss. I'd use some rtv silica the or hondabond on those.

      Here are the seal part numbers. You will need a quantity of 3 of 91301-PJ7-000 and a quantity of 1 of 91302-PJ7-003.

    Oh, and if you haven't done so yet, John, if you could do a video explaining what all the little vacuum tubes and hoses are/do, that would be helpful. I just changed the PCV valve last weekend, and I realized -- while looking at the intake plenum -- that I don't know what the majority of these tubes even do. I found it a little difficult to get at the PCV valve, and was tempted to start disconnecting the hoses around it, but then thought to myself, "I don't know what that does. What if I EFF something up?" and so I just very carefully worked around the other hoses, and got the PCV valve off. Then, I tried to install the new one (FRAM) and it broke into pieces in my hand during installation. What's worse, the lower rubber part got stuck in the rubber bushing (in the top of the engine) and I genuinely panicked for a good 30 minutes, before I managed to wiggle it out with a pair of 90 degree bent nose pliers. I suspect that my car might have a very, very, sliiiiiiight vacuum leak somewhere, and I would like to know what the little hoses do. Seeing as it's a 26 year old car now, and the rubber is getting old, should I just change all the little hoses and enjoy peace of mind? Do you recommend a brand -- such as Mishimoto, perhaps -- or should I go OEM only? I would love to hear what an expert like you, has to say on this.

      The pcv valve can be a pain!! I've struggled with some of those before too. The plastic gets hardened from all of the heating/cooling and makes it brittle when they get old.
      All of the small hoses are just vacuum. They usually only have one spot to go to. I'll try to dig up my diagram of vacuum hoses and show you where they all go. I always replace all of the vacuum hoses on my cars when I first do a tune-up. I will by a small package at O'reillys that has about 5-6 feet for around $4 and it's sufficient. I'll remove one at a time then cut the same length and then replace! Easy and painless!

    Which bolts go 16 ft lbs and which ones go 9 ft lbs? I noticed you said 16 but I also see the spec for 9. I don't want to mess anything up.

      On my accord the Intake side has the lower torque while the Exhaust side had the higher torque.
      Either way double check in one of the manuals or ask you local dealer

    Hey mate I've been getting oil in one of my spark plug wells of my b18b1. I've been looking everywhere all over the Honda forums and can't find anything besides the rocker cover spark plug seals which I've checked and replaced to no avail. I've just seen this video of yours and wanted to ask do the b18b1 motors have these lower spark plug seals under the rocker assembly??? I can't find any info about it anywhere for my engine. Any help would be appreciated thank you!! 💜💜

    My car engine is a d15b2 and on that pice you take of, in my car, the hammer, the frist one on the right, intake air, It goes to the sides, that is, there is play, and it doesn't seem to have a washer or a spring to put it back in place like other air intake hammers, is there a way to open that part to put a washer in? Or not?

    hi,G.B.H is the spark plug cap&wiring orientation the same on all 89-91 honda ef civic engines or on certain engines years only? because because I don't know the right orientation for my ef but luckily I haven't started it yet for fear of ruining something , hope to hear back from you👋

      Yes, spark plug gasket/seal. They usually come in a valve cover gasket set from most places, even online.

      You're supposed to. I didn't this day due to lack of time but did a few weeks later. Ran fine I'm between but better to do so if you're unsure if they've ever been adjusted.

    There's a bolt near the camshaft that I accidently tried to removed with my 10mm ratchet and that bolt broke. It's near the distributor. Am I screwed with my crx because I broke the bolt to the camshaft? Now I cannot remove the camshaft since I was stupid to remove it one night trying to replace my distributors. I still have the bolt but it broke and the small part of it is still intact on the crx.
    Is there anyway to fix this problem or better to get another engine?

      It can be removed. Some are easier than others but there should be a way to get it out.

      You'll want to reset the ignition timing.
      You can set the engine at TDC before doing any work to help you reinstall the timing belt too.

    Not hating or anything, love the channel but when you took off the rocker arms weren't you suppose to remove the bolts in the opposite order of which they're torqued? So the first bolt to loosen was the 16th? Kinda like how your suppose to do it on head gaskets and what not

      Edgar Dominguez That's probably what it specifies in the manual, correct? I've never don't this on a sohc, and luckily never had an issue. I think it's more important for the head bolts as the torque value is much greater. The ft lbs of torque on these bolts doesn't seem large enough to bend/break anything. I've changed this gaskets on numerous d15's and d16's in the past and have never had an issue. But to be more specific and precise, there would be nothing wrong with removing them in the reverse install order.

    great video. I own a civic wagon with the stock d15b2 and I need to replace the rocker arm seals I'm getting oil in the spark plug tubes. did you set the #1 cylinder to top dead center?

      No I didn't. I pulled it off where it was and set it right back down where it was. I didn't have one problem. The hardest part was getting the assembly off the head. It took a little wiggling but came up pretty easily.

    Hey thanks i folllowed your vid and it worked perfectly i had oil all over my plugs now its fixed. Im still having problems with my idle tho its really low whats the normal operating idle range for a d15b? Its under 1k like 300-500 rpm. I Researched I tried cleaning my iacv and tb but it wasnt a good job. I just sprayed tb cleaner in it. Now it flooded and wouldnt start so i took out the spark pligs and cleaned them and started up but stil idles low now at 100-200 rpm. Ima try and bleed the bubbles out of the coolant next. What do you think it is? Vac leak? Faulty iacv or just dirty? Tps? I changed the plugs and wires but didnt change the cap and rotor yet, would thay cause low idle surge? Timing?

      Idle is normal around 750-800. Set ignition timing again. I doubt you have a vacuum leak anywhere because the car would be idling higher.

    Hey John i have a 91 civic hatch and i don’t seem to be leaking oil due to my garage floor being clean but I’m definitely burning oil , is this the correct step to take first, other then visually looking for obvious leaks ?

      Absolutely could help, but more of the oil sits in the spark plug tube, it doesn't drop to the cylinder. You may have old rings or valve stem seals especially if you seeing it blowing smoke at any point.

    great tutorial man. very helpful. i have a question, i have a 91 crx base model D15B2 i think my distributor is failing bc i have sputtering and hesitation on anything more than 30% throttle. ive already changed fuel filter, FPR, plugs. my question, what would be the ID# on the distributor? i am pretty sure its TD-01U but ive seen others like TD-18U

      I believe there are a couple that work. If youre buying it from your local auto parts store they will have the correct ones whichever the stamping may be. I've used ebay ones and just made sure you had your correct car selected and as long as they say it works, it will be just fine. Most auto sellers on ebay have accurate info.

    Hey Jon,
    I torqued my first bolt at 16Lbs when putting the rocker back on. it snapped the bolt, thankfully I was able to the piece that was stock back out.
    I don't have a manual, is it 16Lbs for sure?

      Yes, 100% correct at 16 ft lbs. You may want to check your torque wrench and make sure it's in spec.

      @@GarageBuiltHondas You are absolutely correct. I messed up hand tightening them one by one in the proper order. Then torque down to 5 lbs, then 10 lbs, and then 16 lbs. Thank you for your help!

      No, but you better make sure it's set after you replace all of those parts. Hand crank it when you have finished it to verify timing is set.

    Hi Jon! Hope you're doing well! This is Mitzi with the Black Dragon lol I was hoping you could give me some direction. The car is cranking but it's not starting. I tested the spark plug wires and it didn't shock me. So I took off the distributor cap and the ignition coil did shock me, but then I noticed that the distributor rotor isn't moving. Could you please guide me on what I should check next? I appreciate your time!

      Is the screw on the rotor still on it? Sometimes they fall off.

    Would I need a valve adjustment after i do this if I mess with the rocker arms or hit anything like that? How would I know if I know I need a valve adjustment because I'm under the impression I do.
    Btw is this a d16a6 because that's what I have, i know its extremely similar, just wondering so I can follow the order and torque or not.

      Jahubla You are supposed to do a valve adjustment if you remove the rocker arm assembly. I didn't though but want to in the future. I haven't had any problems and my valves are still quiet. The d16a6 will be exactly the same process and torque specs.

      It's really not too hard. Just be patient. You'll only stay a novice if you never try. But if that's not really something you care to learn, then take it to someone, it'll save you the time at least.

      Wiggle it back and forth. If you have a rubber mallet, you can hit it lightly to help it budge.

    Hey I have a question, I'm looking into buying a really cheap but great shape(interior and exterior wise) AWD wagon, but the only problem it had is a transmission issue where the owner says it's got a "scratching noise" and suggest either a rebuild or replacement. I was wondering if you would know what might be going on to cause this noise and whether I should skip out on that deal or buy and possibly fix or replace the transmission?

      Buy it, and fix it. Could be something small like an input shaft bearing, or just need a rebuilt transmission. Either way if it's a deal, then it's worth it because these are already tough to find.

      +Boosted Fool I didn't and it was fine. Still driving it like that to this day. If you haven't adjusted them in a while it would be smart to do so just do you know when it's been done, but not 100% necessary.

    bro im sorry to come again and bother you all over, i dont have a torque wrench, but i desperetly need to replace valve cover gasket, and the oil pan gasket, do you think i can do it with a normal wrench or its better to ask for a mechanical wrench?
    id like to replace the head gasket between engine block and head also because i see some oil on top of the transmission and i think its from there, but that is kinda difficult for a low skilled like me, and also if i replace those gaskets, what kind of silicone you advise me?

      A normal ratchet would be ok for the valve cover gasket and oil pan. Just don't overdo either of them.
      The head gasket might not be your problem. You should check the distributor and valve cover gasket first to make sure those aren't leaking onto the top of the transmission.
      Any kind of RTV silicon will be fine.

      Jon Widmer there sure is a leak because my transmission is with some oil "looks fresh" so ill do those 2 with some brake disk upgrades and some d16 4-2-1 i saw some info that those straight fit so with 100 euro ill Have all those parts for replacement, oil pan is a easy removal ?

      You'll need to do a valve adjustment if you didn't keep them in their original position. It'd actually recommended anyway but I didn't do one at this point in time due to lack of time.

      @@GarageBuiltHondas Thanks man, I just completed the procedure. I didn’t realize the rockers were not actually connected to the tops of the valves, but instead just sit on them.
      I spent a long time trying to actually push the guides into their holes before tightening the bolts before I realized it can only be done by tightening them. Oh well.
      Easy peasy, back up and running.
      Haven’t had the courage to check for leaks yet though. . .
      One thing though, the manual specifies 14 ft lbs for the pedestal bolts, but only 9 ft lbs for the “end bolts”, I didn’t know if the end bolts were at the top or the sides. I chose the sides and am worried I chose wrong . . .

      You'll need a timing gun to set it perfectly again. It'll probably run just fine if you just throw it on though.

      Put it back on when you get a chance. It's vital to the life of the engine. If you are missing the hose then there is no positive pressure under the valve cover, which can adversely affect the PCV system at removing pressure from the crankcase.

    I've had a lot of issues with distributors going bad on me, even tried replacing the ICM and some other piece inside with no luck.
    Any clue what'd be causing this? Gone through 2 old Honda dizzies and 3 after market ones in my D15B1😵

      @@GarageBuiltHondas Only other issue is that sometimes it'll die while idling, then start right back up.
      Yesterday it died in the snow and the only weird thing I noticed was the battery light faintly flickering a bit. Happens occasionally, but the alt out is pretty good (13v-14v) and I've done the big 3 on it.
      If you don't know it's alright, but I thought you might possibly have some experience with failing dizzies on these. Some people told me it can be common on the OB0 distributors.

      Man I'm on HPU and I just can't find the lower spark plug tube seals at all. No part number and it doesn't show up in the diagrams. I'm looking them for a 1998 Honda Civic EX.
      Does my car not have this? If you look at the diagram the spark plug tubes look longer. Maybe it only has the upper seals?

      +B Kain No, your engine doesn't have them. You are correct in that assumption. It'll only be on the 88-95 D series engines. I don't believe the Z6 engine has them either, but I cannot remember 100% and it's been a long time since I've handed a Z6.

      I've had really good luck with oem Honda VC gaskets. When I have to buy one at autozone or O'reillys I'll usually use it on the corners. My b16's both have oem VC gaskets and have never leaked. My b20, I used the one that came with a whole kit off eBay and of course, it leaks on the front left corner. Go figure! Haha

    Hey jon im currently having trouble with my distributer, i replaced the piece on the distributer that goes into the cam, and now the car wont start....
    i know you mentioned that if you install it 180 degrees opposite of how it was, the car wont start. I have flipped it around both ways and my 90 civic si still wont start. The engine will turn over but it will not start. All my spark plug cables are in the correct order and its a new dizzy. Can you help me out???

    hey man i have a question my 91 integra starts once but then doesnt after that it has a new distributor new battery new starter and new ignition switch and wen i go to start it at first its starts and lights are dim and everything in the dash and the second time i go to start it it just clicks and act like the battery is diying wen i just got it today and the grounds for everything are perfect man idk wat the hell is going on and its pissing me off because i was going to sell my car tomorrow but all this happen today... help me out please man

      Yes, possibly. The alternator will allow the battery to drain more and kill your cranking power.

    Did you say the firing order on distributor was 4-3-2-1?
    Isnt it 1-3-4-2.
    Just checking because i dont want you to be responsible for the less than knowing suddenly having timing issues if they try setting their wires in that order and it turns out that its incorrect.
    I have a 91...and its 1-3-4-2. Your model may be different but i doubt it.
