d17a1's produced for the 2004 model year have the egr valve located there. The 2004 model year had the biggest revision for a lot of emissions related components. Even the 04 uses a wideband o2 sensor as opposed to a narrowband...
I found the shim to adjust My valves when I did my valve cover gaskets and made a world of difference my exhaust valves were all lose. Hope this can help some one. Stay up everyone
Thanks for the video. You seem professional but I hope you showed more details about the head removal in details. One quick comment, when you Change the gasket material from what the OEM recommends, the Torque may need to be adjusted. Thanks for the video again sir
What kind of cordless impact wrench would you recommend for a project like this (anvil/driver size, power, brand, etc.)? Would one be able to reach the three intake manifold bolts? Is that how you removed them? And can torque force be set on an impact when tightening those bolts? Thanks.
@@bobbyrichie3509 change the ecu and you need to hook up the vtec solenoid to the new ecu since your dx civic doesn’t have a vtec switch that comes off your factory wiring harness. I’m not sure how to do this but I think there’s write ups for it online
@@bobbyrichie3509 theres a few things you gotta do to make it work, if you want vtec to work and be able to pass smog then yes your gonna have to change the ecu, cats, egr, ect... you can find honda forums that talk all about this type of swap online.
Thanks for sharing your time, effort and knowledge. It helped me understand the overheating problem on my honda civic. I was thinking it's the cylinder head i guess now im sure it is. Im not sure i can fix it myself but at least i know what the prob is. Ill just have to find someone to help me replace it.
How come you replaced the head instead of resurfacing? Wouldn't you do whatever possible to get perfectly flat (and smooth) head and block surface for an MLS gasket instead of going with an eBay composite?
the link you posted for the amazon gasket does not look like the one in the video. I'm curious if the graphite one was better, and where I can buy one.
Really needed to see the head coming off. You claim its easy but didn't show it. Having a hard time with the wire harness, last bit is tucked behind and under the intake. Thank you for what you did show.
Hello Nathan awesome vid I watched your OBD scanner vid just wondering if your can use your scanner on some of your videos. I purchased the scanner you use.
Yes you can machine a warped head. The only thing is if it has already been machined before, you have to make sure the amount of material that it going to be removed via machining, won’t make it where your valves stick out. If they are going to stick out, then no obviously and you’d have to go to the junk yard.
this is probably wayyyyy too late but depending on your engine and what head will match it, for example a D17A2(vtec head) will go on a D17A1 bottom end, All you need is the head, all your gaskets and head bolts, the ecu and engine wiring harness from the car that originally had the D17A2 engine , then from there it's pretty much hooking up your new head and rewiring your cars ECU with the vtec harness
I do not appreciate you wasting my time with this long video and dog interaction. And guess what? In the end, you skipped all the instructions on how you took apart the cylinder head, and didn't even get the thing replaced in a 26+ minute video.
Hey Nathan nice video, I have a question for you. My 02 lx the spark plugs is warped or has no grip thinking I need a new head. My question is can I buy a vtec head for it even though it's a non vtec engine??
atombomb232610 this head removal job is cake walk ...hes getting to the point for the vtec head .......something that takes a master to accomplished . I have been doing hybrid swap for over 2 decade and this guy is pretty accurate on detail .
I have a question when you switch heads or blocks or even full engines on cars let's say civics what are the things that need to be done I've heard that you need new wiring harness anything else if so can you guys help me out with what I need when swapping engine compartments as well as when swapping transmissions why do people do that my bad I'm still new to cars have alot to learn know some what but hope to see a reply (:
Seriously? You skip the entire section where you lift the cylinder head off the head (along with all of the intake stuff). Sorry. but that is not helpful in the least. To leave out such necessary work? Could lead people to do more damage to their cars. Bad move.
Why time lapse the important stuff 🤣 these kids want to know how to take apart there car not see your dog or watch you look for shit you should have looked for before recording

Really liked the amount of detail in the video. Would've loved a part 2, but i'm guessing it either got deleted, or never recorded.. Still great vid.

Yea the 2nd head you had there was the d17a1 can confirm has EGR no vtec
bypass half tear down how is this a video on head removal?
I have the same motor, same head. Do they make a vtec lockout for the D17?
Do you have a part 2 video of installing the head? I’m in the same boat with a 03 ex civic but the motor is a D17A1. I thought I had the d17a2
Only difference I believe is vtec and non vtec you can use a vtec head just unplug the solenoid
I have an 05 civic 1.7 liter dx coupe non vtec so will a vtec head work if i change out the ecu?
@@slowazzes1972 so a vtec head will bolt up to a non vtec block and all ill have to do is change out the ecu rite?

I'm not in the business of trying to show how fast I can do but more so it being done correctly other than that it's a good video.

Will a vtech engine work on a non vtech ECU and harness and don't plug in VTech
Did you have to mess with the harmonic balencer at all? Thanks for the video btw. I'm doing the same job now and that was great info
real great video, thanks for sharing!
Did you ever make a part2 of this video?
Did the vtec head work
the link you posted for the amazon gasket does not look like the one in the video. I'm curious if the graphite one was better, and where I can buy one.

Have a d17 looking at k20's. Good to see some real work tho.
Where the heck is part 2 I don’t see it I can’t find it you have a billion videos it seems. Is there a part two, link please?

Good video bro
Did you use copper sealer on the graphite gasket.
I’m having this same problem. Vtec ECU and non vtec motor.

Why didn't you show anything for a 27 min video 😭😭😭

Did you use the v-tech head on the none v-tech block? or just repair the none v-tech head? Will a v-tech head work on a none v-tech block?

Actually the a1 comes with the egr canister with no vtec. That’s not a mod

Was the head warped or what was the outcome
Did that cheap eBay gasket really work bro just asking cuz I might get it

Juan Juarez you can buy a vtech head yes but you will need the ecu to make th vtech engage
Juan Juarez yes
8:37 sir in my country temperature goes to 50 degree Celsius can I use this blue metal one gaskit ?

The engine code is on the block, next to the headers
you made the video useless to most buy cutting to the point with the head off.

Nothing comes easy and that's a fact, nothing comes easy but a broken back. Timing belt=bent valve Yelling at the dog throwing wrenches.
Bro my car has the same **** that head exists lmfao
You skipping that whole part was pointless that’s why u get a thumbs down bc I really needed to see that step
Is that a vtec
Take this vid off. I hate People who skip steps. Get it off
Well i need help with my lx

Thanks for not showing the most important part of the process. now i have to watch a different video
Lmao what was that I'm doing this job right now
The old one is maybe D14Z6 head, it has EGR but doesn't have VTEC.
part 2 ? !!! ????
Why time lapse the important stuff 🤣 these kids want to know how to take apart there car not see your dog or watch you look for shit you should have looked for before recording
Info info
D17a1 don’t have egr valves
u cant swap over the cam holder assembly. u must use the orignal to that head. they are line bored from the factory.
That is not true
What a waste of time. Half the process skipped and part 2 never uploaded.
Every thing is fine but you talk to much and no action
Mate you said I don’t know 118 times so please don’t waste a Fijian time if you don’t know. Nothing useful here
