Honestly, what's happening with the Dream SMP reminds me of Israphel, and I'm really glad the newer generation has something like this to grow up with now, these were some of the best online experiences imo.
Old comment I'm responding to but Zisteau Plays Minecraft I view as the spiritual successor to this kind of mixture of playthrough and plot, albeit condensed to only a single character. SeedlingsShow was also quite like SoI, only from the perspective of the NPCs rather than the Players. Quite cool idea too, sad it was also just abandoned after the end of season 2.
half life vr ai is a vr playthrough of half life with improv comedians playing npc characters in garry's mod torturing the main character as he "plays through the game" and eventually evolves into a story that thrives in breaking the 4th wall and battling an eldritch horror (as you do in half life) I think if it wasn't directly influenced by SoI then it was influenced by something that SoI influenced, and they just don't know it. Idk what that would be though. Also Freeman's Mind. But everyone knows about Freeman's mind. If you don't know about Freeman's mind you should go binge it all right now.

The worst kinds of people on this earth are the ones who are really, really, really dumb but thinks they’re really, really, really smart. If you need help figuring it out, I’m talking about you.
I think this really shows why Minecraft is such a good game. At this time Minecraft was very bare bones; no main objective, no real combat or survival mechanics, limited building blocks etc. Despite this however they took the framework of this game and created a huge adventure with a big overarching story and several locations. Just using such a simple game as a medium to express so much creativity. You can really take Minecraft and get whatever you want from it and THATS why this game is truly a masterpiece.
I like how "classic" this series is. The airship is so tiny, and is just plain wood. The tunnel to their old cave is so plain, just a 2 by 2 tunnel. Mistral city has no supports on the walkways... So classic Minecraft.
I watched this during some of the hardest times as a kid, i cant begin to explain the comfort this series gave me. Theres no words. Their interplay of jokes, and also me not knowing this was scripted, just added to this overall wonder and mystery and excitement i dont know how to explain. It was real, their rough and they laugh at their mistakes, with them everything is ok. It was a safe zone for me after the troubles of my childhood. They’re having so much fun too. I miss being that influenceable, they inspired creativity and playfulness and charisma and mystery and a bunch of stuff i cant begin to explain. I find it hard to believe looking back. The way this series began as another playthrough series of Minecraft, which were so popular at the time, and subtly grew into a large adventure with a cast of characters and a story does really show why the Yogscast became so popular for Minecraft.
It is by far the GREATEST Minecraft series ever made, and they did it without any mods. It is such a shame they never finished it. What always confused me (and everyone) was that there was never an official response on why it got cancelled. Lewis mentioned it briefly on stream once, talking about all the cool ideas for the final battle against Israphel and his army, but not much else. I remember Hannah saying the map was corrupted and unrecoverable, but I failed to see how that was true as I found many links several years later to download the map and convert it so it would work on the Xbox 360. If I could do that, I am sure the Yogscast could figure it out or at least rebuild the world. It didn't need to be perfect; we just wanted an official ending. They could easily have written reasons why the world looked different, such as Israphel getting his hands on a red matter explosive (if you know, you know). I understand it would take a lot of work, but it would take much less work than their other series' such as Voltz, Tekkit, MoonQuest, etc. My original theory that they didn't continue SOI was that the accounts with the NPC names were hacked and forever lost, but a mod would have easily remedied that problem. My theory in 2024? Lewis didn't want to continue it because Minecraft had fallen out of trend back then (2012), and views were too low to justify continuing the series. It would also explain why they stopped uploading Minecraft around that time and ventured out into playing other games. They go wherever the algorithm tells them. Not that it helped them, as the channel has been stuck on 7 million subscribers since 2015. We will likely never get an official ending to SOI, but at least we have 38 episodes to rewatch!
They started witout mods, but later we got to see Flans Mod (airplanes) and hot air baloons, as well as the text chat bubbles. There were a few other smaller things I can't remember clearly, but they absolutely pioneered in creating a RP minecraft series.
